This Daihatsu is the vehicle I’m most interested in seeing on TFLanything. Leave the Gladiator behind, and use this for the “no pavement needed” series!
Roman: In Europe they were called "Daihatsu Feroza" (continent) or "Daihatsu Sportrak" (UK), as the name "Rocky" was given to its bigger brother which was called "Rugger", "Taft", or "Fourtrak" outside Europe. Great video as always, TFL!
Daihatsu Rocky Parts Northwest - Rockpile Garage in Washington State supplied the idler arm for this project. Back windows are in the works to get manufactured again.
Real talk, Toby is truly awesome. It is so obvious he is passionate about his work as a mechanic, and his high level of knowledge is impressive. He's working on and navigating that Daihatsun effortlessly, you rock Toby 🙂. More TFL episodes with this man.
I have a 90' model Rocky. I never get out without some long looks and thumbs up.I have some oversized tires and chrome spoke wheels. Runs great and has 119k miles.
Replace your 4x4 vacuum lines with the hard plastic ice maker line for fridges, wrap it in friction tape and it'll last you a lifetime with no worries.
Everybody needs a Toby as a mechanic. Roman thank you for all your group does, over the 6 channels, usually there is a video I can enjoy watching. Looked like the ford gunsmoke was on barn finds but it would not work to look at it. I have never used the site before and did not see how to bid. Stay safe and healthy.
Kudos to Toby for catching that idler arm issue...that's why you go to a good technician! If that wasn't caught on the lift...that could of led to something really serious.
I've owned a Suzuki Samurai for a long time, but I have always loved the long forgotten Daihatsu Rocky,/rugger, and the Dodge Raider/ Mitsubishi Pajero. I really wish we could get the new Jimny here but that's just never going to happen. I'm so jealous of you West Coast guys and your total lack of rust.
Toby is great. Like that you take your cars to him so that he has a steady flow of business. He needs to stay around so that your community has a good trustworthy mechanic they can go to.
Other names for the Rocky around the globe: Daihatsu Feroza (Europe/Australia, 1989-2002) Daihatsu Sportrak (UK, 1989-2002) Toyota Raize (Japan, 2019-present)
No pavement series with your new mechanic walking us through the upgrades that we could do as well. Also take him along for inspections of new vehicles.
Hey guys, just in Case. In Costa Rica we have plenty of those. You might be able to ship some parts to the US without much issues. Plenty of spare parts as well.
Asin hubs are made by subsidiary of toyota, they also made the transmission for the Jeep cherokee XJ (and maybe the ZJ grand cherokee witht with the 4.0)
I recently redid the entire body/chasis/interior + checked the insides of my 2001 Rocky. Every ounce of rust was sanded off on the exterior/interior. Sealed it, and repainted the entire car. Also redid the interior completely. She looks and feels brand new stock again. It was a nice father/son project.
I think the Samurai is going to have an edge as it has a straight front axle vs the independent on this truck. With a spring over lift and 33 inch tires and the right gearing and that Samurai would be pretty much the most capable truck for the $$. Add a rear locker and it'll be unstoppable.
Have got mine for about like a year or so, it is a european version so it is called Feroza, i like that car, but thing that drives me mad is a lack of OEM or even aftermarket parts for it. Seriously, when i was repairing front suspension i had to bring upper arm bushes from russia and lower arm bushes from Japan. Steering idler? Came from Taiwan directly. Sealings for transfer case? Unavailable. I dug deep enough to find that I can use sealings from Benz G class. It is gonna be nightmare to service that car but, fingers crossed, you will not sell it if you throw it in the rocky paths. You get it? ROCKY paths :D greetings from Poland :) EDIT : If you search in the interwebs, especially on russian sites you will find full factory service manual in PDF for free. About 5000 pages. I've already printed mine. Cheers!
You forgot to grease all ball joints and other parts required. That is a must at least every 15thousand miles! Take good care of this unique piece of art...Daihatsu built some of the most reliable and quality 4x4's ever. Cheers and enjoy.
Toby is great. The replacement part looked different than the original. The 'thingamabob' on the bottom of it looks long and threaded on the original, but it's short with some kind of "head" on it on the new one...yet it bolted right on.
Aaron Britt I was ripped off on an Engine install from a small shop! Paid $5000.00 for them to screw up the engine and then I had to go to the Dealership to have it done properly which cost me another $5000.00 for another used engine. I am vary way of small shops!! 🤬🤬🤬
Aaron Britt that is awesome to know, guess a lot of it is you rarely nowadays get to meet the mechanic that works on your vehicle, but every time I have, I’m always impressed by the intelligence of those that turn the wrenches and figure out what’s going on with your vehicle. Just really cool to see a young man like Toby and listen to him and you know this is one sharp fellow.
Wow. I’ve been working on cars for a long time and I don’t know if I’ve seen that much up and down travel on a joint before. Let alone an idler... Usually it’s worn differently... neat! That must have been ssooooo close to failing. I originally thought it was missing the boot when I saw it... then I saw it 🙈 Only on TFL folks lol.
Remember, they are in the RUclips world where they can make some money off of a video or two when things go wrong. So I suspect they're not too worried about it.
Radiator hose is designed to contain heat to increase the efficiency of the cooling system. Not sure why you would put the fuel pump in radiator hose and take away its ability to dissipate heat naturally. the pump could overheat itself with long run time
fuel pump is cooled by the fuel passing through it. thats why you never run the tank dry because the pump will overheat and fail within a few short minuets. if you cut one in half you will see the fuel flows through the entire motor then into the pump. some newer cars that dont return the fuel to the tank but just before the pump have a cooler on the return line to remove the bulk of the heat.
A friend that owned a transmission shop (now retired) told me to never buy a Samurai because of similar issues. He said he had a really difficult time find parts for them so I could imagine a Daihatsu would be even worse. Here in liberal smog controlled he!! California, it would be a nightmare.
What a beast the Rocky is personally I have The Feroza version but they look merely the same except mine has some muddies and a fat bullbar on the front.
Where were you able to source the part for the Rocky? You mentioned two places on the west coast but never gave a name or contact, I would appreciate any help!
I had a fourtrack in UK had solid axle's front and rear and leaf spring suspension front and rear was the 2.8 td variant went anywhere only downside was the body eventually rusted out
I absolutely ADORE Toby's lisp. And in the most positive way imaginable. It's so cute im about to die. I don't mean that deameaningly or any other way. It's just... cute.
Shout out to Tobie w/ German Auto. Most mechanics, like doctors, want to be left alone to concentrate. He remained friendly and engaged. Love the Rocky, but was also a fan of Isuzu Trooper / Mitsubishi Montero. See Rocky's on Japanese Domestic Imports, wonder if the Rugger is the same or close enough. Also a fan of Mitsubishi Jeep.
MOST PARTS LIKE THIS DON'T BREAK BY DESIGN. THE MOVING PARTS WEAR OUT. AS YOU CAN SEE THE OTHER PARTS HAS IT'S BALL JOINT REMOVED AN REPLACED BUT THE ARM IT SELF LOOK FINE.
In the uk it’s called daihatsu sportrak 1.6 16v EFI petrol and you can get a bigger one called daihatsu fourtrak with a 2.8 tdi Diesel engine what looks identical but bigger apparently the same size as the Jeep Wrangler 2 door
Easiest way to make sure it passes emissions is get the gas level down low, and put 2-3 gallons of E85 in it, or a gallon can of denatured alcohol, and drive it a few miles and go do your test. Once that's done, go fill the tank to dilute the ethanol-alcohol in your tank, then drive that out until empty then refill again.
If only their cheap Jeep TJ had been a 6 cylinder! They could have kept that one and foregone junk like this. But then the point is making videos about as many different cars as possible, I suppose, and not necessarily buying the best and just sticking with it. Yes, I know any car can have bad ball joints.
Toby is like the Rocky Mountain Car Wizard. He should definitely have his own channel. Probably a lot of cool content on European and Import vehicles.
I love Toby
Please TFL, from now on, every new/used vehicule you get, you bring it to Toby for an inspection!!!
This! 1000%!
He's a good mechanic and very informative! Your lucky to know him ,he goes the extra mile to explain what's going on with your vehicle
Toby is great! We need more of this guy!!
This Daihatsu is the vehicle I’m most interested in seeing on TFLanything. Leave the Gladiator behind, and use this for the “no pavement needed” series!
Agreed.

Cool mechanic he knows his stuff

same in Chile, the rocky is the one with rigid axles, that will keep your kidneys free of stones.
Thanks for the heads-up
I once owned a 1987 Rocky, amazing car
They were also sold as Feroza in Brazil
My first car was a 1997 Daihatsu Feroza SX (it is name in outside EEUU market) . I really miss him. Regards from Chile guys, TFL Rocks!.
Daihatsu Rocky Parts Northwest - Rockpile Garage in Washington State supplied the idler arm for this project. Back windows are in the works to get manufactured again.

Roman, this tech is a real treasure... Best wishes to you all from the UK
That Rocky should have been inspected before sale . That’s was great that he saw that issue .
Sweet 1966 Coronet in the background ,
Agreed.
I agree, these guys are supposed to be car guys, should have picked that at time of sale, bit sad really
Tony Absolutely right !! They should know better .

I’m amazed at the number of people who don’t have cars inspected to check for bad steering, suspension, and brake components.
People bitch about state inspections, but it's good to keep stuff like that off the road before people get hurt.
Makes sense to inspect before purchase. If you still intend to buy, fix the problems before working it out.
You life could depend on it.
@@matthewgaines10 Well said
Toby is the Man!
He sure know how to work and play all at the same time!
Glad the Rocky is fixed, can't wait for more.
I like the way Toby talks...
That mechanic is a really cool guy. If I were in the Denver area I would take my car to him.
Kudos to Toby for catching that idler arm issue...that's why you go to a good technician! If that wasn't caught on the lift...that could of led to something really serious.

Try looking for parts in Europe. Here they're called Daihatsu Feroza, maybe it will be easier to find parts under that name
Toby is great. Like that you take your cars to him so that he has a steady flow of business. He needs to stay around so that your community has a good trustworthy mechanic they can go to.
You guys got lucky finding a good mechanic that takes pride in his work, it's always interesting when you end up over at German Auto.

I am surprised there was no death wobble when you test drove it? Lucky for Tommy it could have been disastrous!
There could have been a very different video on the same subject.
It also came out in the Philippines ad the Feroza. Left hand drive as well. Maybe you can look for surplus parts in Manila as it's also rare here.

I'm telling ya you guys would love a second gen amigo, imo they're the perfect size for a 2dr and they're a real underdog off-road
TFL fund to clone Toby, unleash a Army of great Mechanics across America!!!
We're out here already. We mostly work at independent shops (chain shops don't pay enough) or we're master techs (not line techs) at dealerships.
Aaron Britt I was ripped off on an Engine install from a small shop! Paid $5000.00 for them to screw up the engine and then I had to go to the Dealership to have it done properly which cost me another $5000.00 for another used engine. I am vary way of small shops!! 🤬🤬🤬

In the real world we get used cars inspected before the purchase.
As far as cheap tires go the sailun terramax isn't too bad. The terramax at actually works pretty good.
Late 60's Dodge?!?
Early 70's Chev...Nova?!?
Let's have more of whatever projects
Mr. Toby is playing around with...!
We need more of Toby, great mechanic, seams like a very nice guy and he is natural on camera.
That issue should definitely have been caught when the vehicle was inspected by you before you decided to thrash it
Didn't Tommy says it handles better than a wrangler 😂... and no one noticed a literal death wobble???
S M yes, but a pile of gravel handles better than a Wrangler
Don't you guys have mechanics check the used vehicle's. Maybe from now on you should.
at least jack it up and shake the wheels around... buy a floor jack and take it out to look at vehicles

@@jamesbeaman6337 so true

Toby needs to be the official TFL mechanic
I think you were one good bump from testing the roll bars the hard way. ;O0
There is a lesson here for sure.
This was my first suv. Was an awesome vehicle that got many looks, until the headgasket blew.
Toby's the man ! Would love to see more videos with him.
Same with my 87 montero. Need to replace that idler arm periodically.
Look at the gauge of the metal on the chassis box! Japanese quality 👍🏻

In Europe they were called sportrak for the smaller petrol and the fourtrak for the slightly larger diesel version.
Great little trucks IMHO
Forget about the Rocky tell us about the Dodge and the Chevy .
He seems like a really good dude and guy to have a beer and talk cars with.
Wow, that's a new one! I never saw that in hundreds of thousands of miles in mine!

do a story on that yellow 1966 Dodge Coronet 500
Roman. Nathan’s SUV is a Samurai. Not a Sidekick. Just being picky. 😅.
Woah! About as worn as that ball socket can get before the ball pops out!
Can you share that parts supplier that you mention in the video?
Why did the replacement look different from the original piece? It looks like the part that attaches on the wheel side is shorter on the replacement.
Obviously the FT's previous owners didnt love it. Hope TFL can give it the love it deserves to be the great 4x4 it is!!
MOST PARTS LIKE THIS DON'T BREAK BY DESIGN. THE MOVING PARTS WEAR OUT. AS YOU CAN SEE THE OTHER PARTS HAS IT'S BALL JOINT REMOVED AN REPLACED BUT THE ARM IT SELF LOOK FINE.

It actually reminds me of a bronco II. The proportions, etc. How does the rocky compare with bronco II in size?
The Nissan Hard Body has the same kind of idler arm. Posibility can fit on the Daihatsu
Curious how you guys passed emissions with this beauty. Looking at getting a Rocky myself but worried about emissions
Please make more Daihatsu Rocky videos 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Easiest way to make sure it passes emissions is get the gas level down low, and put 2-3 gallons of E85 in it, or a gallon can of denatured alcohol, and drive it a few miles and go do your test. Any info on the shop you bought the steering component from? Thanks!
Put a bottle of RXP in the gas tank before the emissions test.
this little truck is what I wish the bronco sport would be
What is Toby doing with the 1st Gen Chevy II Nova. Looks cool
I'm glad El Paso county doesn't require emissions.
Ditto for Bexar (San Antonio).
They do.
Toby seems like a great mechanic. But for a place called german auto, there never seems to be german cars in the shop.
That little beast would look great with a Raptor coating - do an easy fix to the bog in the bonnet and Raptor away.
Would the ball joint press out & be replaced?
Great video thank you!
To y could be the alternative’ car Wizard’. Very personable guy.
Toby should start a youtube channel
I would sub in a heartbeat
