DOMINANT GRIPS ARE GRIPS THAT ACTUALLY CONTROL. Not all grips are equal. 7) When you PULL GUARD, or any time you are IN GUARD, you need to have GRIPS WITH YOUR FEET RIGHT AWAY or you’ll get your guard passed (always strive for three or four points of contact at all times). 8) EVERY GRIP NEEDS TO HAVE A PURPOSE. When rolling, think to yourself, “Does this grip have a purpose?” Are your grip(s) preventing your opponent from turning away (escaping), or posting to prevent a sweep? 9) When you’re rolling and things don’t go your way, think about what grips you had initially before it all went bad for you. 10) When to break grips: When a grip PREVENTS YOU FROM DOING WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, you need to break it. YOU ARE BEING CONTROLLED. 11) In most cases in the gi, you need to break collar grips. A collar grip more often than not prevents you from doing what you want to do. 12) Every grip requires a different approach (to break it); pry, circle, kick, peel, angle adjustment, or force a reaction. 13) The most common way to BREAK GRIPS IS WITH TWO HANDS (two on one is stronger). Practice prying grips off in a way to allows you to still have CONTROL WITH YOUR LEGS WHILE KEEPING YOUR BUTT (HIPS) DOWN. Have you hips up, opens you up to being swept. 14) We can also CIRCLE WHATEVER PART OF OUR BODY IS BEING GRIPPED to either break the grip off or put ourselves in a better position where it is easier to pry off. 15) More often than not from guard we will need to USE OUR LEGS PRY GRIPS OFF, USING A KICK. Legs are stronger than arms; we should utilize the strongest parts of our body. 16) Some grips will require you to peel them off by the base of the palm. IF WE CAN’T BREAK THE GRIP, AN ANGLE ADJUSTMENT IS NEEDED (example: half guard kimura reversal). 17) If none of these options are available, we will need to FORCE A REACTION TO MAKE THEM LET GO of their grip voluntarily. 18) BLOCKING PEOPLE FROM TAKING DEFENSIVE GRIPS with increase the success of your offense, substantially. Always block grips when you can to make an unfair playing field. YOUR 2 GRIPS VERSUS THEIR 1, OR THEIR NONE VERSUS YOUR 1 WILL ALWAYS BE MORE FUN… 19) Two extremely important GRIPS YOU NEED TO TAKE FOR YOURSELF AND PREVENT YOUR OPPONENT FROM TAKING ON YOU are: 1.) the HEAD and 2.) the UNDERHOOK. This was a fantastic elaboration on the concept of grips, can't wait to use this concept, made me look at jiu jitsu in a whole new light! Osu, thank you!
As an older-in-years, new-to-BJJ white belt, this video is incredible. Opened my eyes to an area for focused improvement over the next few months as I get accustomed to the early grapple, but also something I know I'll be able to refer back to, probably for 5 or even 10 years, as I can appreciate and incorporate more of the nuance involved.
Watched this video 3 times before class last night; helped for the first 30 seconds of each roll then I would forget everything. I need to start rolling with your videos playing through earbuds or something 😂
Haha well it took me until into my blackbelt to really understand these concepts so clearly. So you already have a more a heads up than I did! All I had was how to do technique x, y, z etc. Still largely all that's out there lol.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu It's been 3 months since I watched this video and I'm still coming back to it before classes. I’ve been doing jiu jitsu for about 6 weeks, I was always getting submitted and my guard getting passed, felt very frustrated. Had a 3 week break in the holidays and went back yesterday for the first session. I applied what you teach here and man what a difference. I was able to get my first straight arm bar and felt my guard was not getting passed as much. Thanks so much for the videos!
I was also breaking grips and got my grips broken until i broke my finger. Already 2 months recovering... Bad luck. I am patiently waiting to come back and roll again. Great video!
White belt no stripes. Awesome vid, instinctively knew grips were important but had no idea how important. Thank you. So amazed how intricate and detailed BJJ is. SO much to learn. Do feel overwhelmed and a bit bummed how slowly I’m learning. Am developing a small bit of defense but as yet have no offense against anyone with experience.
I hope they don't give me no stripes as I know I'm still sh!t only 6 classes in. I feel like I need 100 classes for one stripe. I could attend more but I've been busy. Soon, I will try to make at least 2 times a week but preferably 3, like from going to the advanced class afterwards which I had the opportunity to go to today but just went home cause I was somewhat tired and hadn't eaten in 20 hours.
Great video! I've been training for over two years but in class it simply isn't possible to have simple yet important concept explained with live examples over and over again, which makes this invaluable as a student! Also, I don't think I've ever seen you lose a round.. Does that ever happen these days??
This is definitely a great lesson, when I started training my grips were very lazy, and I started concentrating more in having more secure grips to gain more control. Nonetheless, I keep coming back to this video because I'm always able to pick another detail. Jordan is definitely a great instructor.
Amazing videos with great pointers! Love how you use clips from older videos/rolls to give a better picture of what you are trying to articulate. I can only imagine how long it took to edit the video though. Thank you for the hard work! :)
I call this concept "anchors" in my art. Our grappling is mainly standup grappling, so instead of thinking of the feet, I'm thinking of the hips, shoulder, and elbow as anchoring to create additional points of contact. The more points of contact, the more opportunity you have to control your opponent. But you must also break their posture so you have the leverage on those points, instead of it being a battle (or worse: them having leverage on you).

I have been trying to get better grips/get rid of grips in the past weeks and it helped a LOT ! Thanks !
Glad it can help 🙂
You have the best videos man. Thanks for what you do
I appreciate it 🙏🙂
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥…most useful part was actually showing the diff between the two while rolling…ill use this this week in class…
This is the best video I've ever seen you make and that's saying a lot. Your repetitive use of the word grips is key. Your knowledge of your jiu-jitsu theory, sense of humor and teaching style keep me dedicated.
This was a fantastic elaboration on the concept of grips, can't wait to use this concept, made me look at jiu jitsu in a whole new light! Osu, thank you!
I really enjoyed this video keep up the great content can’t wait for the next one!
Thank you 🙏
Wow there's so much effort put into these videos thank you!!
Loving your Jiujitsu Vids.......You are a go to for knowledge and closing the holes in my game
Gracias amigo. Now if I can start to figure out how to break grips and keep mine. One step at a time!
That's the puzzle of BJJ!
Every time I flashback to this video while training it's like I've activated a superpower. So weird how much something as simple as grips ends up being the key to most rolls; yet, not once in my 2+ years of training have I ever had a class about grips!
Great video. As a new white belt, I have learnt the importance of grip fighting the hard way!
At least you've learned the importance at least 🙂 A lot of experienced grappler still don't fight grips as much as they should.
This, and all of your videos are highest tier man. Your expertise and done detail shine in every detail and breakdown. Between the video footage, and the commentary. We need more people like you on this world. Thank you for all you do. Much appreciated. That D'arce escape was nutty!
Thanks man! Your comment means a lot. All the effort makes it worthwhile. I'm going to be uploading more regularly soon 👊
Another Great commentary full of Gold. Thanks again for the breakdowns.
Glad you think so. Thank you for watching!
Damn Jordan you weren't kidding, this was a banger.
Thanks man! Got more bangers lined up I'm stoked for too!
God damn this is an amazing jiu jitsu video. That detail about escaping the darce and all you do is 'fight grips and dont put myself in a worse position' is super sick. Totally makes sense. Would love to see more videos on grips or other conceptually based stuff! Love the videos Jordan look forward to more
This was the video i trully needed for my blue belt promotion. Thanks. For real
Glad to help 🙏
I was literally looking for a grips video 2 days ago and now you brought this out thank you so much jordan again your videos and amazing and i see you as my online coach. Keep up the awsome work.🤙🏼
Glad you like them! And glad you think of me as a coach too. That's always been my goal!
Love these videos… super humble guy…! Prevent collar grips stuck with me, I seem to get into bad positions by not addressing my opponent’s collar grip on me…
Love your work man! 🤙🏼
Glad to have been of help man! I appreciate the kind words 🙏
I love this guy and his videos ..
You're too kind 🙏 Thank you!
Awesome to hear it that man!! Honored to help you and others improve their jiujitsu. Keep up the great work and keep hitting those armbars 🤙
i was just watching your channel and you must of posted as soon as i clicked last video! good stuff!
Good timing!
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu can I ask where your academy is? N can anyone come roll with you sir?
5:38 That grip break into a bicept stomp and armbar was slick!!!
Amazing! This is going to help so much 😁 thanks Jordan, I love this
You're so welcome! Glad it was helpful :)
I was also breaking grips and got my grips broken until i broke my finger. Already 2 months recovering... Bad luck. I am patiently waiting to come back and roll again. Great video!
Damn that sucks! Hope it heals quick 🙏
Thank you for this video,
As a white belt this is very helpful. Osss
Glad it was helpful for you 🙂
Great video! Only focusing on fighting grips that stop you especially the collar!
So crucial to break that grip nearly 99 percent of the time!
Another Great video. Thanks!
Thank you!
Wow Jordan, I’m going in for Blue Belt soon and this and other videos I feel are improving my game. Thx again!
Makes me really happy to hear that!
Thanks for posting!
Not really lol. If it happens on video I promise I'll post it out of principle 🙂
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu haha hopefully I get there some day!
You will!
SOOOOOOOOO BLOODY HELPFUL!!! thank you Jordan!
Happy to help! Thank you for watching 👊
Fantastic Video! I absolutely love concept teaching. This was extremely helpful in understanding the fundamental goals of grip fighting
Took way too long lol. But worth it since so many people benefit 🙂
Dude you are a God send
You're too kind 🙏 Thank you!!
Thank you Jordan 🤜🏻
Thank you for watching! 🤛
Wow that’s a slick Kimura reversal
So sick! One of my favorite techniques to hit.
This was gold for me. Thank you
Yes ! Thank you so much !
Thank you for watching 🙏
Just another great video brother 🙌🙌
Thanks bro 🙏
