    Girl skaters getting featured because of their looks isn’t necessarily a problem with the skaters themselves. Girls get featured in many things specifically due to their looks so it’s just more of that, but in skating. Some girls have learned to take advantage of this to gain a following , and I’m not mad at them for it. They’re just playing the game.
    Either way tho I feel like shit talking the girls that are featured doesn’t help anyone. It dissuades girls who are genuinely interested in putting work into skating from starting, because they see people close to their skill level getting hassled online. I feel like the best way to show that you want better skaters featured, is to give those posts as little engagement as possible.
    Also if you find a girl skater that you think should be featured, support them and share their stuff.

    So i'm a girl and i started skating like 5 months ago, and i have friends that have skated for YEARS, so the thing is that they always teased me like "haha Skater girl" and it just annoys me, so i just started getting better and this time they actually cheered me on going to skateparks and stuff but recently i fractured my ankle while skating so they started to make fun of me *again* with things like "i've never needed a cast in my 4 years of skating" "you fell because you're a girl and you're too weak"
    So i'm happy to see videos like these where the appreciation for beginner skater girls is really cool, the video is amazing and really encouraged me to keep skating after my ankle is healed, so thanks for actually making it!

      Thats why all core skaters always hate on skateboarding being trendy. Part of the whole thing is to get away from everything, not care at all and just skate. But when looks and aesthetics is more important than skill and style on the board it sucks.

    • @morgellon9449
      @morgellon9449 2 года назад

      James Kelch never skated at the same level as the other well-known EMB dudes. He was known primarily for his image, as well. Well, I'd call it personality more than image. That old Real ad of him covered in blood after a fight is a perfect example. And I would never say that means he's not as good of a skateboarder, because skateboarding is about a lot of things first and foremost, with athletic prowess being somewhere down the list. Nobody ever expected Elissa Steamer to skate at the same level as the dudes, we were just happy that there was a woman skating and that she was a rad person. A lot of very talented skaters never went anywhere in the industry because they couldn't kick it with any team, they just weren't cool. Andy Mac was just so uncool he actually got known for it, proving novelty is also an important factor.

    • @morgellon9449
      @morgellon9449 2 года назад +5

      @@berran3459 We hate on it becoming a trend because trends are by their nature vacuous and fickle, neither of which skateboarding is. Skateboarding is so much more than the physical act of skating, and that even includes image. Image is huge in "core" skating; pros have to have a marketable image because the ams are typically the ones pushing the limits of what is considered possible on a skateboard, and it's been that way for decades. We'll always remember The Muska, even though there's a thousand kids today who nobody will ever hear about who can do everything he ever did, much of it switch.
      Of course, a lot of it has to do with being cool. The Muska was simply cool, and made a lot of cool friends. Elissa Steamer was cool. There's a lot of very talented skaters who never went anywhere simply because they couldn't kick it. Andy Mac basically had to be the biggest kook in the universe to make a career in skating, despite his amazing skills, and we love him for it because at least he's not out trying to divide skateboarders between "core" and "kook" skaters just to sell Revenge boards to his youtube fans.

Using all you have to be notice is part of the business. funny how both sides of the issue are due to sexism: on one side, either women are viewed as worse skateboarders in general or their skills are devalued in the public eye because they don’t fit the expectations of the male gaze. while on the other side, women receive attention for their skateboarding that is centered around sexualization/objectification and not skill level. either way, women are the ones who get the worse deal here and to me the way forward is to address sexism and patriarchy in skateboarding, especially the men in skateboarding who criticize women receiving attention for their attractiveness and don’t recognize or unpack their own sexism.

    Simple fix here people... Know the difference between a skateboarder and the rest of the world. Then act accordingly. Live and let live, and know that an actual skater is one who skates, and the rest are using a board as a prop. Whatever. If a pulchritudinous girl in a bikini decided to iron a shirt online, people would still watch. In those cases there is no difference between a skateboard and the ironing board, and no difference between the girls using the different boards.

About girls who don't care about skating and gain an audience just from their looks.. well I do think it's lame. And they would be considered a poser in that case. But it's not like any amount of complaining will do anything about that so, it sucks and can take away from girl skaters that do actually care but it is what it is. Attractive girls will gain an audience no matter what they try to do tbh.

The Director of ESPN came out in an article&felt comfortable enough to say publicly that the problem was that girl skaters just weren’t pretty. Those were his exact words. I made a petition to get girl bowl riders back in the xfames, many of us fighting until the girls were back in. Leticia who broke the glass ceiling and started making real opportunities for girls, guess what she had to do? She did a n00d shoot. Back in the days you literally you would not be featured at all unless you were pretty. Cue the thrasher girl section, the creature girls, I could go on and on. Girls literally pretty much were groomed by the industry. And now you’re gonna sit here and tell us the fact that we’re doing what the industry said would get us back in- it is a problem? Just come out with it. You don’t want girls in your scene. Grow some and say that.

As a female who grew up in the action sports/skating culture, It's honestly disappointing to see girls who work so hard and have insane talent be thrown underground by a girl skater who isn't that good but has good looks. I'm not saying that being pro only depends on skill level. Both my daughters have been skating for about 4 years now and they’re getting pretty good. Fortunately there’s a nice skatepark a few blocks from my house, and I go there all the time with them. Obviously I can’t skate like I used to, getting old sucks, but you know, I’m still out there ripping shit up the best I can.
    Nice video man🍻

    My older sister introduced me to skateboarding, she used to skateboard. I can't thank her enough for it.

    Such a Hard Topic to talk about but I like your take because since social media is unpredictable you can not control who would get popular.

    So you’re going to blame girls when it’s not there fault that they get featured just because their half naked…. That is straight up the sponsors and what they choose to repost. Why bring up what’s wrong with girls skating… there is nothing wrong with us skating

    As a girl skater I think people should be allowed to wear whatever they want.. the blame is on the people who are reposting or featuring weak ass skating clips just because the girl is in a bikini

    super happy to see women picking up the sport and learning. even if those are only doing shove-its and kickflips, this is pushing this industry in a positive direction without doubt. more and more women will look up to these people and start skating hard to better them and that is only a good thing for skateboarding

    I am a girl skater and I am always ready for a guy to walk up to me and tease me for being a girl while skating. I always know what I'm going to say, but I've never actually had that experience which is awesome! Props to all girl skaters who have dealed with critisism, and personally I am very neutral. I think guys and girls all have the potential to be awesome at skating. Absolutely anyone who skates is rad!

    As a woman that skates, my god do I hate seeing Instagram posts that feature girls with short shorts and cleavage shown doing basic tricks anyone can do. It's clearly posted just to bait thirsty guys and it makes me sad that there are some women that skate really good yet their videos aren't shared as often just cause they wear regular skater clothes - jeans & a t-shirt. Like seriously, who even skates in shorts? That has to be painful as hell.
