Claire loved Clyde and he left her, and after she married someone else who isn’t named in the song. But Jeremiah was a crazy guy who was the equivalent of a modern stalker and was obsessed with her. When she went to see Clyde, Jeremiah got to her first and she denied him, so he killed her and buried her
He is so underrated
Its a bit confusing, he develops the character of Clyde, glosses over the real husband, "so Clare settled down, her husband moved her out of town" no character development for the actual husband. Thats why its easy to miss. had to go back a couple times myself. Then on to the stalker/rapist who hung for what he'd done. One of the best folk americana songs Ive heard. Love how the vocals build throughout the song. Chilling. My understanding is that there really was a body found on a construction site of a young girl in an evening gown, I believe CWG filled in the blanks with good story telling. True talent. One of my new favorites!
She had a husband. Then there was Clyde. Jeremiah was a third guy that killed her. Hope that helps haha.
