that vibration means its actually preparing for flight. moths like this cannot actually take flight until their wings reach a certain temperature so they have to run this sort of pre-flight warm up before they can go.
They really do look like hummingbirds when they fly! I seen to have one that has stayed a few days on my back porch. It sleeps during the day and is active at night. Enjoyed this very much. A friend sent this to me on Facebook.
Thanks for the video of you holding it. I think it’s nice for people to see that they are so gentle and harmless that you can let them take a rest on your hand if they want to. And you were very gentle with him. Nice demonstration. 🌸
I just came to know that moths are nocturnal and they shivers to maintain the temperature of their bodies since nights are cool in the absence of Sun. Butterflies on the other hand are active during day so she have to just span her wings completely in the Sun. Both are four winged insects. But this moth looks very cute due to his outer scales. Thanks for the upload.
@@kimbee53meierjie83 The same can be said about owls that they are nocturnal but some of their kinds are active during day since they have no competition with raptors in their habitat. I think this may be the case for this moth.
The moth was probably cold. That s why you were able to handle it. However it seemed like it wanted to leave. Trying to warm itself up by fluttering its wings.
My husband found one in our garden, so cool. I never saw one before, it looked as big as a hummingbird. We were able to get a little video of it. It totally made our day. Just a reminder that we are all so lucky to live here with so many amazing earthlings.🩵🌸🙏
Its a sphinx moth. And when I first saw these flying near the garden, I thought they were hummingbirds. Why were there so many humming birds?? I thought xD.
Please change the video title, this is not a macroglossinae, this is Hyles lineata and its english name is white lined sphinx. Just look on google, this is not a macroglossum at all.
what a beauty, noticed it in the last 2 years in Romania - Bucharest, in the autumn. Last time (2 time all) I saw one was 1 month ago in a outside shop that sold flowers :)
By the way thats not a hummingbird moth, yes they do hover like humming birds while they drink from flowers but most large nocturnal moths do that anyway. That moth is actually a whitelined sphinx moth. look it up!
I found one yesterday hanging out by my front door and it was lethargic. I built a box for it and warmed it up & I guess it thawed out enough that it wanted to leave. It is 38f outside. Should I just let it go? It's 45f but feels 38f. I had him outside with the lid off all day and he didn't leave. he was slow and cold but now an hour later he is ready to leave again. Should I just let him go out into the cold and die on his own tonight?
I was walking down the street and saw something flying by flowers. I thought it was a normal hummingbird until I saw the long mouth thing bend, and I realized it was a moth. I hate moths but it was actually kinda cute.
Moths are pollinators and they mean a lot for the natural environment. A lot of moths are so colorful people think they are butterflies. They are not all dull and boring like most people think, like Madagascan sunset moths or Green banded Urania. They are beautiful tropical moths
White-lined sphinx moths are a species of hawk moth, which is colloquially referred to as the humming-bird moth. There's no need to get autistic about the video title, it's fine as is.
What? They don't have fangs and can't bite and kill people. The White Lined Sphinx does have a proboscis, it's curled up in the video. If they showed it from the front you would see the proboscis.
@@kimbee53meierjie83exactly! People are spreading the same lie about the world's biggest Atlas Moth, saying they bite and kill people within minutes. They don't even have a mouth. 😑
Sorry but it is and it does have a very long proboscis that is kept rolled up like most nectar feeding moths. www.birderslounge.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/20080405-DSC_0367.jpg
please fix the title, this moth is H. lineata, NOT M. stellatarum. Google it if you don't believe me. You're misleading a lot of people with wrong information.
They suck the blood of flowers all around you! I've honestly rarely ever seen these moths around where I live. They have no defenses other then flying away from stuff.
I love how the dark reflection of their compound eyes makes it look like it is always staring at you.
that vibration means its actually preparing for flight.

Cool information! Thanks!...I love the eyes, they look more like fish eyes in that they have a pupil>? Very interesting!!:)
Oh thank you! One of my butterflys does this and i think its a moth now
I always thought they just liked to run fast. Now i know it's because they're trying to fly. Doesn't make it any less funny, I love moths
Boeing moth 😂

I love moths they are the cutest thing ever that existed

They’re fluffy, too.
It looks so soft...I want to pet it a little bit lol
Sadly if you pet a moth their little furs and scales fall off
Yo también quiero acariciarlo se ve bien peludito y suavecito
Whatever it is it's freaking adorable!
It's a moth, you genius....... literally says it in the video title. DUHHHHHH
i used to catch tons of these guys when i used to live in Palm Springs. absolutely gorgeous little angels, so chubby and lovable :3

definitely a hawkmoth but certainly no Macroglossum (Probably one from the hippotion genus)

Hummingbird hawk moths has a little fan tail at the rear just like an actual hummingbird.

They are called hummingbird moths because they drink nectar.
