I was about 12 years old when better off dead came out and to this day it is one of my favorite movies. I watch it a least 2 or 3 times a year. Its just a "feel good" movie. And did song is just a pure classic. I wish it was on Spotify.
How did it take me almost 40 years to discover this song had an official video? Maybe if we had some sort of music television empire that had multiple channels that aired music videos of varying styles and eras I'd have seen it. The last time we had one of those I just saw a bunch of kids falling off skateboards when I put it on.

Sadly even though Better Off Dead is one of the best 80s cult classics along the lines of Weird Science, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and The Breakfast Club, John Cusack actually admitted in an interview I think it was in 1997 that he absolutely HATED his role in Better Off Dead, even to the point of ripping it to shreads, and telling the interviewer he truly did not want to revisit it in any way. I think because of his hatred of the movie, his character Lane Meyer actually portrayed that hatred and it made the movie truly shine as a gem of an 80s movie collection. Its amazing how an actor's contempt for a movie can sometimes make the movie better. :) I still own a VHS copy of this movie, (yes you can scream at me for being an antique and still owning a VCR) and it is one I truly enjoy showing people on movie night. The 80s were fantastic for movie experimentation and will always be remembered as the Second Golden Age of movies at least as far as original content and entertainment value go (think Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Return of the Jedi). Its not Bogie and Bacall, but it was fun!!

In the early 90s when i first got my license I managed to dub these songs from my old stereo hooked up to my VCR so I could have em in my car. ✌🏼 can't forget that movie RAD, Thrashin, gleaming the cube, bmx bandits, and many more classics. Good stuff dude.
The gist of it was, Cusack wound up vehemently disagreeing with Steve Holland on his final cut and the tone portrayed. Cutback was hoping for more pathos, and a bit of a darker take (it was supposed to be about suicide after all), but got frustrated that Hollander kept going for more of a cartoony vibe. Problem was, by then, he was already in production with Hollander on 'One Crazy Summer' and by then, Cusack was REALLY just mailing it in, because he'd grown to detest Hollander's approach.
Of note: after 'How I Got into College' absolutely bombed, Steve Hollander was pushed out of film studio work and wound up directing...cartoons. Probably exactly where he should have been focusing his talents in the first place.

And now that the Rupert Hine connection has been made all around, it finally makes sense to me that I always thought the song, 'The Flyer', by Saga (the tune, not the lyrics) could have played as the end credits for Better Off Dead.
Eh, I think that song’s a bit too melodramatic to mesh with the tone of Better Off Dead. I’m a big fan of Saga, but their music isn’t fodder for most comedies.
In reality the girl is average at best. 6 out of 10. Maybe get out more and you will realize there are probably 100 million girls better looking than the one in this video. That’s a fact.

I'm going to admit it: though I absolutely love this song, this is my first time seeing the music video, and I definitely think it could have been better. Overuse of barnyard animals.
Dog was supersweet- they put a plastic mold on his head for the scene. He didn't want to jump up for the shot so the prop guys had to set him in place and give him a little push to make it look like he interrupted the almost kiss. :D
I just found this video, I love the song so much (big fan of Better Off Dead) but now I cannot stop watching this. I absolutely love it!!! The dog warms my heart and everyone does a great job selling the story. It definitely brought me back to the 80s!!!!

I was 15, the dog was so sweet, had a plastic brain taped to his head, animal wranglers and plexi glass around the giant lizard, it shot in 3 days, the mansion/house is real, never met rubert or cy... they boy had to jump through 3 sugar windows to get the right effect at the end. It was a great shoot. Was a 1st for me, very special.
