On one side you might be able to put a hopper minecart under the quartz stairs to pull the diamonds through and have those routed back up to the hopper dispensing them. That should refresh the despawn timer, kind of like the honey wall. Thanks for your content.
About the despawning diamond loop thingy problem, you can collect the items back from behind and drop them out again to reset the item despawning timer.
Love the whole thing, but I have an idea that I use for smoke just gather loss of gray white and maybe black glass panes and place them individually everywhere where you want the smoke
