    Bought that radio 2006, run it as my fixed station for years, now mostly mobile and it's still working like new. Just bought the big brother the 991A a month ago and like it a lot also.
    Think my IC 7300 is still my go to rig for calling nets because of the ability to record. They call the 991A a shack in a box but that's what I thought the FT 857D was when I first got it.

    You are a man after my own heart. I have gone a little different with my FT-857D. I bought rails, bag, and battery box from PortableZero and a CHA Emcomm III Portable antenna. Pushing 59 I plan on having something resembling a proper seat and table, and bringing the radio and LDG z11 proii tuner out of the bag.
    I have NBEMS (flmsg, fldigi), JS8Call, and WSJT-X FT-8 running with my Signalink USB, Digirig Mobile, and Windows 10 Dell Laptop. For the time being Winlink is mocking me, but testing the Cha Emcomm iii Portable on ssb phone today made realize what I thought was a software issue may be RFI and I need to try adding a few ferrite beads. When tuning with 20W or more power the radio was locking in Tx.
    You have better HF antennas, but I am trying to get it all in one small bag.
    I will probably get the Packtenna 20/40 EFHW for inside the bag and Cha Emcomm iii Portable hanging on the bag.
    One of my primary requirements is 80m NVIS. Currently I am using the Ultimax 80m-10m EFHW installed in an inverted-L, which works well when the transformer is near the ground, earthgrounded, and choked at the feedpoint. It is too big for the bag.
    If the Cha Emcomm iii Portable does not meet expectations I will likely try MyAntennas EFHW as it is very efficient and about the size of the Cha Emcomm iii Portable.
    Keep up the good work.
    If you get interested in EFHW antennas, I suggest looking at some of Steve Ellington's videos. He does actual testing in various configurations. The configuration I use is about 3db better than typical configurations. I suspect the Cha Emcomm iii Portable will not provide required performance on 80m until I have 4 or more counterpoises.
    Again, keep up the good work and happy radio prepping. My main prep is for after the big hurricane blows in FL.
    N4VEP

      I used to run with the EmComm III !! But doing SOTA made me Switch things up a Bit. Also have you taken a look at the EFHW Sparkplug antenna?? It comes in 50-100 watts! I use a 61' 26AWG wire with that thing and I'm resonate on 20, 40, 10, and 15! That Antenna is as small as your thumb !! I run it in a Sloper Configuration. This is what I used before I had the Tactical Delta loop!! I'm so in love with it's Versatility ( can run Vertical 17'). Check it out ! it's been so good to me. Your Gear sounds awesome man!! Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. I'm working on part 2 right now. 73 !!! DE K4KHO

    • @vironpayne3405
      @vironpayne3405 2 года назад

      @@metroatlantahamradio334 I have seen some interesting videos of the sparkplug antenna. It hasn't made my short list yet. The Emcomm iii wasn't on my short list until until my brother sent me a $200 Amazon gift card.
      I had narrowed down to the Packtenna 20/40 EFHW and MyAntennas 80m-10m EFHW.
      NVIS regional communications of 50mi-500mi after a hurricane is my primary concern. That means 80m & 40m NVIS. 80m is a bit more reliable for NVIS, but more noisy.
      Otherwise my favorite bands are 40m & 17m for ragchewing & DX.
      Which has me thinking of building a 40m or 20m 3/8wave doublet. Doublets are fun antennas and very efficient with excellent freq agility, but they do like being high.
      Endfeds are best for portable ops in my opinion due to ease of deployment. Most portable verticals are not too efficient and/or have narrow Q.
      How many radials were you running on your Emcom iii? I have the 25ft and a 1/4 wave set 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m & 10m from Super Antenna. I may get a second set of radials. Adding one set doesn't do much to SWR. A bit higher on some bands and lower on others.
      Both antenna wires are nice but I think I am liking the Super Antenna wire better than Chameleon. The kevlar Chameleon wire sheath seems a bit soft, so I don't dare drag it over an oak or pinetree. Hint, hint... Chameleon has cute plastic mounting rings.
      I can't wait for part 2.
      Are you running a bluetooth CAT for one side of your Digirig Mobile? That is on my short list to try.

  • @edhillseo
    @edhillseo Год назад +1

    That's a nice portable rig for the Ft-857. Looks like you have the Chameleon Tactical Delta antenna. Great activation from Blood Mountain, which is a fun hike. I'm using the Chameleon Emcomm II 60 ft wire antenna, which I love for it's abilities on 20m-40m-80m. I've only used it once in the field at Kennesaw Mountain Park but got good contacts from IN, NJ and TN with 30 watts. The APRS and messaging you're doing looks interesting. I just got the Winlink tnc so I want to setup APRS and digital for my FT-891. KI4SBU

    Thank you for the video and information. I would like some more information about this. The music makes it harder to hear and understand what you are saying. My tablet doesn't have the best audio? Sometimes your voice was low. Can you give information on how to put that all together

    Awesome , can you tell us or show us how the Digirig is hooked to the TNC3 ? Also weight?

    • @metroatlantahamradio334
      @metroatlantahamradio334  2 года назад +2

      Approximately 10lbs with Battery and Protective Frame.
      Also the Digirig has Yaesu Mini Din connections to 3.5mm jacks that connects to the sound card. The TNC3 has the same type. The Digirig uses both rear data and Cat connections at the rear of the Unit.
