As soon as you start explaining at 2;27, it made COMPLETE sense....I've had the EGR valve replaced on my 97 Toyota, and the month or so it's started this hesitation upon accel, going into a green light or from a stop. UGH. The code was reset and the light came back on. Thanks for being straight up!
This video was a huge help in figuring out if my problem was the actual booster or a $5 valve. Unfortunately I think my booster is crap. My issues just started 2 days ago when my brake pedal felt strange. Never had any acceleration problem or hint of problems associated with a vacuum leak. My pedal, while being pressed, makes a hissing sound and is almost rock hard. Makes it very difficult to stop on a dime. The only time I have an issue is while pressing the brake pedal. Other than that the truck runs great as usual. I have a 97 GMC 1500 Suburban. Thank you for posting this.
I've been having a similar symptom on my vw, brakes work fine but getting the exact same symptoms you just described. This has confirmed it for me, as the information around is sketchy and i've been dealing with this for months. I replaced all the ignition the exact same way you have, cleaned up everything. Bruh try 3 years and couldnt figure this out ...i narrowed it down to the break booster but dont think my break booster was bad cant find that vacuum leak to save my life. im gone replace that valve and see if that works for me ..if so thank you a life saver. this truck got me looking stupid.

Awesome commentary. We just changed one tonight on our Chevy. Symptoms on ours were different -- the engine ran fine, but it seemed like the brakes had like zero boost. That's probably because they didn't! We put the same one in that you did. $5.97 from Autozone. Now our brakes are really good.

Thanks for this video.After changing fuel injectors and sparkplugs a lean code still remained. It always seem to be an issued when braking then my car would stall and buck momentarily.I narrowed it down to my brake booster as well.
Good one, you'd be surprised what a vacuum leak of any type will do to acceleration AND while it idles too and when your timing it! Vacuum must be solid for your ride to run correctly...thank you!
I’m surprise the vacuum hoses don’t have clamps on them on the ends like other cars do. I thought mine were missing but I’m seeing mine looks exactly like yours.

You may have saved someone from having to spend a lot of money at a shop to get their vehicle fixed. I am at the same point you are, motor wise, and got stuck with going back and forth with the timing and fuel adjustment for 2 months because of the same hesitation during acceleration. Oh and i would hope that you check that Booster valve out and possibly for any leaks in the Filter thats on it or the line coming from the break booster.
I just changed my one over on my 2006 Range Rover sports. My brake was getting a hard pedal and not so good . I was careful to keep my distance behind other car's. I just done a test drive around the block and it does seem much better. Will go careful for few days to get used to it. The check valve is actually a one way valve which stops oil going into the booster, works on a vaccum. Good luck

I greatly appreciate it I started letting this way myself because I took a can of starting fluid with the engine running and Sprite around the engine and it did not rev up but I did not spray around this area however for those who do not know if you have a vacuum leak you spray starting fluid around the area you suspect it is it will read your engine up and you can pinpoint where you have a vacuum leak at. I do have a question for you however sir why is your engine revving up and down and producing black smoke as well? I myself have a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier I bought it out of the scrap yard when I Lady drove it in with a busted windshield none of the gauges were working which turned out was the ignition switch she has struck a mailbox had damaged both front fenders which I took them off and Hammer them back out and now you can't tell it's almost ready for painting and needs a new front windshield still but one thing at a time in my area you don't have to have a perfect windshield I live out in the sticks in Tennessee. But my engine on takeoff hesitates heavily going up a hill it hasn't Heights and with the air conditioner on it hasn't Heights going up hills a little harder but not much harder than without the AC on but I do notice the difference. And it doesn't do the black smoke all the time I know the black smoke means that it is way too rich burning fuel but like I said other times it's hesitating like a son of a bitch and not running like it's supposed to and surging I've already replaced the fuel filter and the air filter did an oil change the play spark plugs wires and coil packs I was fortunate when I got this one out of the scrap yard a kid brought his into the scrap yard that he blew the motor up because he was too stupid to put oil in it and was racing it and I know the owner of the scrap yard pretty well and he told me to get all the parts off that I can I got three days I needed a few more parts off that vehicle but my three days had elapsed when I asked him how much do I owe you looked at me and said owed for what? And I said the parts I took off the Black Chevrolet Cavalier and he said I don't know what you're talkin about and winks and left the office that their toes you the good man this guy is but even he is baffled why the car is doing the black smoke and surging The lady said she was getting rid of the car and two other vehicles because they were moving to California and had no way to transport them the other two vehicles were complete crap I did not run one didn't have an engine the other had no transmission and no title for either one of those vehicles but the Cavalier had title and she drove it in I've done a lot of work to it my neighbor has helped me greatly with it because I am disabled 100% and right now until he gets my Ford F-150 transmission back together and back in it this is the only vehicle I got I miss my Ford F-150 I miss the man that sold it to me he was kind of like a second father let me have it for 1400 on time and within six months I had to pay it off because I was hauling scrap metal and tans and helping people clean up their yard and bringing people firewood and wood chips from places that were just wanting it gone oh, and I told him only pay me what they they wanted and one person I only charged my gas because I knew that they were worse off than I am financially but I did make 23 trips of full loads of firewood to their house and only charged them $25 and still felt like a jackass for taking that $25 but I hope when I'm to the point where I can no longer walk under my own power completely someone's kind enough to help me out, and whatever way that I need or may need help with. I was in Cleveland a couple of weeks before my transmission went out this guy was in a traffic collision and he lives in the area where I do here in Polk County Tennessee I sent his vehicle several times but never met the man and it was going to take two rollbacks to get his trailer and his truck back home his trailer had livestock and he said he could not afford it, me being me I asked him where abouts do you live and he told me where you live what you was in the same road I live on only further down much further down by about eight miles and he could not get a hold of his wife can bring the other truck I looked at him and said well brother look right here I've got a truck with a three ball hitch on the back we can drop your trailer let the rollback hook up to your truck and secure your truck while we hook up my truck to your trailer and I'll take you home behind the rollback that way your animals are safe even though with her obviously Shook Up and you are home safely and you don't have to pay for to rollbacks to come and rip you off and considering I live 8 Miles up the road it's just slightly out of my way needless to say he was grateful he took up my offer. And he told me outright he's not used to people offering a hand unless they want something I said brother all I want is your friendship that's all I want I wish it was under much better circumstances but it is what it is and I'm here for you right now. Yeah, the plugs and wires are all new. The timing has been set also. Maybe the timing is trying to work its way back off. Im gonna also go ahead and replace that starter. Thanks for the reply. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Have you done a tune up on your car? Check to make sure your plugs are good and Gapped right .. Check to make sure your timing is corrected. The long drag sounds like your starter maybe going bad also.
Right on bro! I did this research for about two months because it just puzzled me i changed out every hose and all new gaskets where installed and it still did the hesitation when a accelerated. But i ran across a guy on the HOTRODDERS forum that had the same problem it turned out that that was what his problem was.
Thanks 4 posting this vid after watching this I went out & checked out the one on my 77 Elco & mine is new wit a new hose also but there is no filter. Now I gotta do some homework too see if it did not come wit a filter stock or the old owner got lazy & bypassed the filter
Yesssir txchevyrida!! that thang can cause problems and the older it gets the worse it gets. I found this out thru research on the internet and when i changed that 5 dollar part it solved my hesitation problem
I do my own work as well,I have a car and a truck and both of them old.I only take them to a garage when necessary because of the cost,but sometimes figuring out the problem through trial and error can be maddening to say the least.

I was puzzled by double grommet, and after watching this video, I decided I would just try to put the smaller one in without the larger one. Fit perfect and everything seems much better, though I still have tightness on breaks, (no hissing, no problems shifting from park, no rough idle) I hope I don't have to replace booster, but will know after test drive.
Amazing explanation and video, but you didn't mention about driving acceleration deeply as I have same issue with my Mercedes E220 CDI 2001 lovely car put so much work in it and everything is perfect also breaks are good and pedal is not sinking, just when accelerating is juddering and shutter when pass some point just gently accelerate more is ok and on high revs is ok. Also problem with shaking and juddering is happening when apply break on D and R with this happening i disconnecting break buster vacuum pipe and is ok. I wonder if this will cause brake pedal to hiss like it's sucking air. I have a hard brake pedal as well and as long as my foot is on it I can hear air sounding like a vacuum leak , I also have the same problem you had
I was leaving church this afternoon and my sub was acting funny, accelerating erratically and bogging down. And it shut down however, it did start back up. When I got home I looked under my hood and noticed that check valve was broken, it is a easy fix that causes a lot of issues. Because the hose that runs from that check valve run to the intake manifold.
Its not causing the vehicle to run lean. Just many of the systems including if you have vacuum secondaries on your carb will cause the issue you speak of. In my case the check valve isnt opening at the lower end of the pressure it is supposed to open at. Sometimes causing the brake booster not to completely reset and you have to pump the vacuum out of the booster for it to get low enough to open up. Causing slight brake drag (another nightmare)

Will this problem cause your car to hesitate starting after being ran for awhile? It will stall out and it takes a while to start back up, then its a long drag when it starts. @ carledward1968
Wonder if it's my problem sometimes when I brake rpms drop, sometimes ac changes from recirculate to outside air (door held by vacuum) when I turn my car off it doesnt hold vacuum so ac always switches from recirculate to fresh when I turn the car off. On a few occasions when accelerating at half throttle I get surging like starving for fuel. maybe all this could be that stupid little part.
i gotta edelbrock carb... is that part that you're showing connected to the back of it or somewhere else mines goes from the brake boost to the line behind the carb?
Yea andrew2002 it took me a while but i figured that shit out lol. The shops kept telling me that it was my carb or the distributior. That just goes to show you can't believe everything they tell ya..
I have a Buick Grand National T Type and I'm starting to think this is my issue as well. I know my cars fuel injected but I have a lean condition at higher speed. There is quite a few check valves you can change I guess.
you right bruh, how about I changed that shit in my 72 Olds Cutlass and it now starts up faster(just like when it had the factory carb) and runs a whole lot smoother. I honestly thought my timing was a lil off, and thanks to you I changed that check valve and my car is good now!!

I notice some but i notice more air noise whe i applied the breaks and i notice bad hesitation when i accelerated. Did some reach and found thi was one o f a few problems that causes Vaccum leaks
Any idea what would cause the ABS light to keep coming on? Sometimes it comes on a little bit after startup and stays on solidly? We've already had the front pads & calipers replaced along with the rear self adjusters, so I was actually thinking that it might be the break booster.
Did you change the plugs or did someone else. The reason i ask is because maybe the plugs aren't Gapped correctly possibly the wrong heat range also you could have a partially clogged fuel filter . Oh Check to make sure your Cap and rotor are in good shape. Holla back at me anytime

I have a 1992 chevy silverado k1500 and i have the same problem i changed the whole brake booster and its still running like crap the rpms drop low and wants to tyrn off but once i disconnect the vaul the rpms go back to normal plz help
Oh 100SpokeRiderz you know that most car not all have that filter just to keep out carbon and any kind of trash that might get sucked up by the brake booster.
Already bro it easy to do. to check it all you have to do is either get a turkey baster or you can use your mouth if you don't mind getting a little dirt on them. But what you do is suck one end of the check valve with either some type of turkey baster or mouth and it should alow you to suck in air without restriction. then the next test would be to blow thru it and if you are able to blow air thru it. then its bad.

Yeah, the plugs and wires are all new. The timing has been set also. Maybe the timing is trying to work its way back off. Im gonna also go ahead and replace that starter. Thanks for the reply. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Have you done a tune up on your car? Check to make sure your plugs are good and Gapped right .. Check to make sure your timing is corrected. The long drag sounds like your starter maybe going bad also.
Right on bro! I did this research for about two months because it just puzzled me i changed out every hose and all new gaskets where installed and it still did the hesitation when a accelerated. But i ran across a guy on the HOTRODDERS forum that had the same problem it turned out that that was what his problem was.
Thanks 4 posting this vid after watching this I went out & checked out the one on my 77 Elco & mine is new wit a new hose also but there is no filter. Now I gotta do some homework too see if it did not come wit a filter stock or the old owner got lazy & bypassed the filter

I do my own work as well,I have a car and a truck and both of them old.I only take them to a garage when necessary because of the cost,but sometimes figuring out the problem through trial and error can be maddening to say the least.

I was puzzled by double grommet, and after watching this video, I decided I would just try to put the smaller one in without the larger one. Fit perfect and everything seems much better, though I still have tightness on breaks, (no hissing, no problems shifting from park, no rough idle) I hope I don't have to replace booster, but will know after test drive.

Amazing explanation and video, but you didn't mention about driving acceleration deeply as I have same issue with my Mercedes E220 CDI 2001 lovely car put so much work in it and everything is perfect also breaks are good and pedal is not sinking, just when accelerating is juddering and shutter when pass some point just gently accelerate more is ok and on high revs is ok. Also problem with shaking and juddering is happening when apply break on D and R with this happening i disconnecting break buster vacuum pipe and is ok.

I was leaving church this afternoon and my sub was acting funny, accelerating erratically and bogging down. And it shut down however, it did start back up. When I got home I looked under my hood and noticed that check valve was broken, it is a easy fix that causes a lot of issues. Because the hose that runs from that check valve run to the intake manifold.

Carl didn't you notice a lack of brake power when the valve was leaking.
Its not causing the vehicle to run lean. Just many of the systems including if you have vacuum secondaries on your carb will cause the issue you speak of. In my case the check valve isnt opening at the lower end of the pressure it is supposed to open at. Sometimes causing the brake booster not to completely reset and you have to pump the vacuum out of the booster for it to get low enough to open up. Causing slight brake drag (another nightmare)

Will this problem cause your car to hesitate starting after being ran for awhile? It will stall out and it takes a while to start back up, then its a long drag when it starts. @ carledward1968

Wonder if it's my problem sometimes when I brake rpms drop, sometimes ac changes from recirculate to outside air (door held by vacuum) when I turn my car off it doesnt hold vacuum so ac always switches from recirculate to fresh when I turn the car off. On a few occasions when accelerating at half throttle I get surging like starving for fuel. maybe all this could be that stupid little part.
One problem would be very spongy breaking or no breaks at all and you also would have eractic idle on your engine because of a bad vaccuum leak

I have a Buick Grand National T Type and I'm starting to think this is my issue as well. I know my cars fuel injected but I have a lean condition at higher speed. There is quite a few check valves you can change I guess.

Any idea what would cause the ABS light to keep coming on? Sometimes it comes on a little bit after startup and stays on solidly? We've already had the front pads & calipers replaced along with the rear self adjusters, so I was actually thinking that it might be the break booster.

Did you change the plugs or did someone else. The reason i ask is because maybe the plugs aren't Gapped correctly possibly the wrong heat range also you could have a partially clogged fuel filter . Oh Check to make sure your Cap and rotor are in good shape. Holla back at me anytime

I have a 1992 chevy silverado k1500 and i have the same problem i changed the whole brake booster and its still running like crap the rpms drop low and wants to tyrn off but once i disconnect the vaul the rpms go back to normal plz help
Oh 100SpokeRiderz you know that most car not all have that filter just to keep out carbon and any kind of trash that might get sucked up by the brake booster.
Already bro it easy to do. to check it all you have to do is either get a turkey baster or you can use your mouth if you don't mind getting a little dirt on them. But what you do is suck one end of the check valve with either some type of turkey baster or mouth and it should alow you to suck in air without restriction. then the next test would be to blow thru it and if you are able to blow air thru it. then its bad.
