i think you forgot a very important detail. after the parents called the brothel about rachel, the brothel and the sex workers that worked there also played a big part in the search. they contacted other brothels and sex workers in the area to see if they spotted rachel. in general, sex workers tend to help out a lot in these types of cases. they are very adamant about not wanting underaged girls or people being forced into doing sex work. they also know first hand how shitty the police are because of how they treat cases of sex workers going missing or being murdered. they often have to take matters into their own hands because they know the cops won’t do anything.
I remember a newspaper report from years ago in which a man killed 3 prostitutes and chopped up their bodies putting the parts in bin bags. The finger was pointed at this guy several times by other women but police claimed that it was their policy to punish prostitutes not protect them. Disgusting.
The shopkeeper who put together Rachel's outfit for display is so smart. That's a great idea. People got to see exactly what she was wearing and they knew what to look for, instead of imagining something from a vague description. Plus, it's memorable. If I saw a mannequin describing a missing person like that, I would think about it all day. I think something like this should be implemented more often, like on the news.
The only argument for that would be if there’s no recorded example of the outfit, otherwise I absolutely agree it’s a great idea and something that would help a lot
@@ruffusisthebest7880 I agree. If there’s no recorded outfit it could be misleading- people would look for someone dressed that way and miss them entirely. That would be terrible. But if there is a recorded outfit, it would be so helpful!
@@spiderbakeryx literally, like they're still a minor...they can't be on their own especially on the streets. if they think a teen is a runaway, maybe they should investigate further to see if the family is abusive? teens don't just decide to run away for no reason.
Unfortunately most cases the child has runaway but when a parent says “it isn’t like them to run away, they were so happy etc.” that should make the police more concerned and should make them search a missing person. But police never listen to the parents.
Well they did have cause to believe she was a runaway. She did leave on her own after lying to her parents. I dont know why she keeps harping that this girl wouldn't do that when that's what she did and no one denies is.
Rachel was 15 when she died, Caroline was only in prison for 14 years, she wasn't even in prison for as many years as Rachel was alive. The legal system has failed, and I mean really failed.
@@vv8134 not to make it look okay, but... It's even worse in Russia. For example, there's this case when two men that brutally killed 16yo girl, dismembered her body, cooked it and ate some parts of it got only 18-19 years in prison. It was planned, brutal and included cannibalism. The case is called "the case of goth-cannibals". It happened in my hometown in 2009, the criminals will be released in like 2027... P. S. One of the criminals actually hung himself in 2017.
Especially for the police to just brush off runaways? Even if it was a teen who just decided to run away, theyre not concerned for their wellbeing? They make it seem like runaways are some inconvenience, it pisses me off cause we have that in the United States, as well.
the misogyny is so rampant with these police, as soon as they know it’s a teenage girl with a boyfriend they just assume she’s a pregnant runaway and drop her case 😐
Its actually more misandrist because they assumed manny was abusive against her with out even knowing him or their relationship and assumed she ran away to get away from him. Either way it was poor conduct on behalf of the police and very negligent.
Absolutely not! It would be misandrist if the police had shown preferential treatment of her case, because of her gender but instead her disappearance got dismissed, because she was a woman/girl. You’re promoting a false equivalence between misandry and misogyny. Misogyny is far more rooted in society and has been for thousands of years to the point whereas most people are not even able to point it out if it’s in front of us, because even women have internalized and normalized the discrimination and dismissive attitude that we have to deal and live with daily. The reason for this is the patriarchy we live in. Even the pressure for men having to pay at the first date is rooted more so in misogyny than misandry, because of traditional gender roles and the presumption of women not being financially independent. There is not qualified sociologist that would argue that we live in a patriarchal society. So even if misandry exist, it doesn’t really damage men in the long run, because the system we live puts the rights of men above those of women. Women don’t really hold societal power over men unless it comes to the sexual value that (usually) only young and attractive women hold. The only people that really believe in misandry and it’s power are usually men right activists.
And also a woman got 15 years for her murder that's so misogynistic why can't they put a man behind the bar instead of a woman for the murder. We all know women murder thanks to patriarchy.
Truly. I'm gonna start by saying 'not all police' (because I don't want anyone coming in and saying that). But when we look at all these true crimes, polices don't really have good track record ; no matter what country they are from (As someone from third world country,I used to think only polices in third world countries are corrupt and useless but how these stories opened my eyes). It's always too little too late. Then they will try to pin it on anyone just to close the case and muck up the investigation. What is even supposed to be their jobs since they don't want to protect and serve people or prevent any crimes.
But I will say it’s absolutely disgusting that the police did the family the way they did💯 I hope they sue the police department for negligence or something and I also think it’s extremely concerning that this chick was able to be released after only 14 1/2 years all while saying she feels no remorse for what she did like who’s to say if she doesn’t feel guilty about what she did to this girl that she won’t do it to another girl because she doesn’t feel guilt damn sociopaths.. but like how is it fair that somebody strangled somebody to death serve 14 1/2 years and then gets to just go live their life as if nothing happened?! Like I really hope we go back to an eye for an eye mentality because if people knew that however they off somebody is how they will also be dealt with💯 I guarantee you crimes would slow the fuck down if ppl knew that if they torture gRape and kill somebody that that is exactly what will be done to them then I bet they probably won’t do it or would at least think twice about HOW they’re going to do it (like make it quick and painless so that way if they are cut it will also be quick and painless type of thing)
the fact that they let caroline go free after only 14 years is heartbreaking. not only is it dangerous for rachel's family, but it is so disrespectful to rachel letting her killer just walk amongst society. the system failed her :(
@@MrGFloyd A family will never move on knowing their young daughter was murdered for such a horrific thing. There are stories of families who still search for their missing children or killers of their family members even 30 years after the event. Most of time people don't really ever move on.
the shopkeeper gave rachel‘s family the shoes that she adored after her murder so they could put them inside her coffin. 💔 (stated on her memorial website) Rip Rachel
@@Cherry-oh1in well I asked because usually you only see the top portion of the body so placing the shoes that far up just seems a little disrespectful in my opinion. Now they probably opened the second half to put them by her feet but the little piece of information just sounded weird to me
@@chocolatebunny3221 Why is it disrespectful? They're brand new shoes she'd been wanting for a while. That said, I actually imagine they might have been put in a little cubby that is in some coffin lids where you can put knicknacks and stuff like letters to the deceased and favourite toys if they were children and things like that.
It honestly sounds like the police are in cahoots with a sex trafficking ring locally. That’s probably why they are constantly harping about forget about her because they believe she was sex trafficked and it’s almost impossible to get your loved ones back from that. Disgusting!
another commenter pointed this out, but the one they called actually really helped in their investigation and handing out the fliers not saying that wouldn’t be possible with any other one, but I doubt it with that specific one
This case is so infuriating and frustrating when the police told Rachel's parents that, she had run away and she would turn up and same when they said that, she was pregnant when they know nothing about her which is so ignorant of them. Also I'm disgusted at the fact that, Caroline is now released from prison, she took Rachel's life away and she should stay in prison. Also, I don't care if she had insecurities of herself or how she looked, doesn't give her the right to do what she did to Rachel.
Lazy police work. I think they also let Ted Bundy go, and Richard Ramirez (edit: California's "Night Stalker") (although I could be wrong about that). 😬 (I think they were both later sentenced to death for all the murders they committed.)
Wow, her being out of jail is ridiculous. I’m disgusted as well seems like the system fails when justice needs to be served. How can she walk freely after what she’s done.
@@hollyhayes9640 yup! ted bundy got 4-6 (from what i remember) death sentences, he was (stupidly) allowed to be his own defense. We all know how that turned out 🤠
Also she’s gonna find a new Rachel cause jealous and insecure people will stay that way unless they do the internal work which by her monstrous actions I doubt Caroline ever will 😐😐😐
@@fallingforyoudarling I was thinking that in situations such as this the system should be held accountable because what they did was just as criminal. The problem seems that no matter how many times they screw up they continue to do it without repercussions and the victim and families are the ones that suffer and pay the price 😕 😔 😪 💔
Statistics: missing children are usually recovered within the first 72 hours. The more time, the more possibility they're in severe danger, or deceased. Parents: I know my kid, and they wouldn't run away Cops: ok, but let's just give it a couple days tho
It depends on how much the suspect slips up. If it’s an iron clad action, the victim will probably never be recovered. Regardless it’s a scary world we live in. People literally vanish from existence without anyone even knowing.
The fact that so many cops around the world are so blasé about missing teenage girls, makes me wonder if they are involved in trafficking in some way. I know it’s a huge jump in logic but with sex trafficking being so rampant, how could you not take every missing teenager case seriously?
There was a huge case in the 80s where a little boy was snatched out of his yard and the mom has been adamant it was a police officer. The FBI got involved and tried to say the mom was crazy and lost her mind since loosing her son to discredit her but she’s never changed her story. I wish I remembered his name.
@@Noneofurbiznsjsbaauabaaahhsbss I may be wrong but Angelina Jolie is in a movie with a similar story line. Her son goes missing and once the police realize she isn’t letting up they bring some random boy and try to convince her it’s her son.
Has anyone ever noticed that almost every time in situations like this the police do absolutely NOTHING but then want to step up and take credit when family/friends/community/media do the heavy lifting? It’s literally disgusting
There was this case in germany (where I am from) with one of the most creepy killers we had in this country. This guy killed a lot of women and shot couples in the forrest in a very disturbing way and the Police did literally nothing. The Family of this one missing woman organized the search for her and the killer over years and years. Like 10 years or so and the police tried to stop them, they didn't take surviving women of this man serious, they destroyed evidence!!!! After a lot of time the killer could be arrested and the womans body was found, but so much harm could have been prevented if these jerks would have done their fkn job properly. (In the end, the killer commited suicide and left a really weird letter for his family btw). Also when the family could find (with the help of old friends who where detectives when they where younger) the womans body etc the police took all the credit and in interviews told the press how they worked together with this family to solve the crime and how thankful they are for the families help. I just hate the police because of stories like this
@@The_holly_and_the_holy the family should’ve came forward and shut that down immediately. You can’t take credit for not doing anything. And don’t get me started on destroying evidence.
THIS! I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the Vicky and Casey White case...The corrections officer and inmate from Alabama who fled the state and ended up in Indiana? Well, they were found in my city here in Indiana thanks to a car wash owner. The police took credit for it. Instead of helping and rewarding a small business owner, they themselves thanked only themselves and used that man like a wet towel. Absolutely revolting.
I've been stalked twice in my life. The first time it was someone who was romantically interested in me, and the second by someone who desperately wanted to be me. From personal experience I can see, the second one was the most terrifying of the two. I feel for the victim in this case
Same and I agree, both incidents are creepy, but someone wanting to BE YOU is somehow even more frightening. In my situation, the person with the romantic interest still occasionally attempts to interact with me on social media using fake profiles. It makes it really hard to feel safe creating content when you're being stalked. Hopefully, they get bored and stay away. Stay safe, J.
It depends really on how bad they want you or want to be you. There are obsessive men who have killed and tortured because of rejection, there’s women who have done so out of envy. On the flip side- there’s simply some out of those two examples who stick to lurking your social media. I don’t want to stigmatize here- but I think personality disorders are the devils here, and a lack of empathy can also predict how far someone will go in their feelings toward you.
i’ve heard the excuse “well since they’re a teenager they probably ran away” way too many times in true crime cases… a scary amount of times. it’s such a lazy and dangerous excuse by the police to use for missing teenager cases. it should not be their first instinct to wave off concerned parents and a missing child so they don’t have to do work. the police in this case should have been fired, period.
if you have a runaway anyway, I'd be looking into why a supposedly well loved & well taken care of teenager would run away in the first place. That just doesn't usually happen for no reason so the cops are failures in every single respect. lazy policework.
its like when they can't solve a case and say the victim committed suicide to get weight out of their shoulders. its so lazy, dangerous and unprofessional.
I will NEVER EVER understand how 20 years (or less for "good" behavior) is a long enough sentence for premeditated murder! I know other countries focus on rehabilitation but guys when is murder or SA those people should be locked up for life. Also, so happy you uploaded twice this week. Love your videos!
Ok but you see in a modern society we believe in trying to help people, you can look at the nordic prison model for instance in the US we have a 50% rate of prisoners going back to prison, where I believe they only have like a 10% which means only 10% of offenders will do it again if you have a 100 prisoners and only 10 do the same crime again that means 90 people where able to come back to society that's pretty good. On top of that it would take so much taxpayer money to keep people locked up, if you want to leave it to a private company to do it, you can have prisoners become slaves, i.e we will be going backwards in our progression to a better society. Before you bring up the death penalty remember that 4% of the time the state executes people there are innocent, so if your ok with your taxpayer money going to killing innocent people 4% of time then how are we different from these people? Explain of hardline punishment is the war on drugs and how bad it turned out. Remember the drug war started as trying to fight back against ODs and the fear of kids doing drugs and what happened people got locked up for weed (less dangerous then alcohol) prisons filled with nonviolent drug dealers and ODs skyrocketing...my point is being tough of crime doesn't always work out sometimes it makes the problem worse and creates other problems. My solution is looking at different parts of the world who have low recidivism rates and what they do right
i honestly agree, im against capital punishment BUT for cases where it’s 99%-100% clear the person in question is truly guilty of SA or unprovoked murder(like excusing self defense and all that) then i really think you shouldn’t just get a chance to go back to regular life. especially SA, as a survivor of that myself like you have no choice but to live with that FOREVER, the rest of your life is forever changed because of one persons disgusting choice, why tf does someone who does that get to have a chance at a normal life after ruining someone else’s? “justice” is effing weird….
@@carmen8958 but we do that already, we have a process that does that exact thing to find out if you are guilty and deserve the punishment that you get, and yet we end up murdering innocent people. I didn't even mention how many times people are convicted of the wrong crime and lose 20 years of their life for not doing a single thing. I think its more about looking at how other countries are successful at there prison system
It is very rare for more than a 25 year sentence in Australia. It is only the most serious case like serial killers that ever get life without parol and we don't have the death penalty here.
@@baneyama103 I’m glad to see someone understand properly how it works. I study criminology (currently doing a Masters degree), and it really isn’t just as simple as “if you do X, it’s prison for life”. It depends on many different things, including the probability of recidivism. And as you said, historically, tough on crime has had horrible results. Yes some people should stay in prison forever but let’s say a guy who murdered another in a context of gang rivalry: is that guy really a menace to society in general if he leaves the gang life ? Perhaps not. It might be hard to believe, but rehabilitation can work. It’s supported by research.
Man, the police work in this case was so disappointing. I just can’t understand how they didn’t even bother looking for Rachel and their excuse was that she was a run away. Even if she was a run away, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have cared for her disappearance because Rachel still could’ve been in danger even if she did leave off her own accord. The way someone goes missing doesn’t deter the fact that they are missing, especially if they’re a minor. I’m glad this case has some closure but it’s frustrating that we didn’t have this closure sooner because the police decided not to do their jobs.
Exactly, running away is a really scary choice to make. Especially if you’re a 15 year old girl in the 90s with no means of communication aside from face to face interaction. So sad to know how much they’ve disregarded this.
I don't understand how murder convictions vary so much. This girl killed a minor and showed no remorse and it was premeditated.. she's out by 35? 😳 Smh
@@dardend4155 I definitely hear ya. It varies so much even with men too. I just don't understand why anyone who kills someone and it's premeditated, don't get life. Talking about only 1st degree murder charges and they differ alot. Maybe prisons are too full idk. California and other states let murderers go free due to over populated prisons. It's wild
@@morganpettipas9198 not true but sure believe whatever you want not like theres thousand of cases of men getting free, also in australia almost no one gets even 25 years even for murder maybe stop being ignorant, bruh girls like you are honestly embarrassing its the misogyny for me.
I don't know who needs to hear this but there is never a reason for people close to you to not be allowed to know where you are. Your safety is a top priority and no one, no matter how close, should make you be so isolated. Please be safe out there.
If someone is missing, you need to hire a private investigator. If you want charges against an offender, you need to hire a law firm to advocate for your rights as a victim. It's fd up, but if you want justice you have to pay for it $$$
Why when reading you're Comment I immediately thought about the old Rice A Roni commercial oh my goodness I feel old now 😅 That would be so cool to see I was born and raised here in Florida so I have never seen anything like that must be really cool ❤❤❤

Sadly this happens extremely often and this is why many people have zero trust in the police force oh that and the fact they seem to love to employ lunatics
I've watched so many videos on this case and everytime it just breaks my heart. Her death was just so senseless and I feel so bad for her family, boyfriend, and friends. They deserved better, and she deserved better. It's absolutely heartbreaking.
Rachel would've had a bright future. She would've been incredibly happy if it wasn't for the babysitter- can't even bring myself to say she's family to her. A very supportive ACTUAL family, healthy relationship, very supportive and caring friends. Very talented and beautiful girl. Why.
I remember seeing the movie based off of this case. It was called "In Her Skin" and also called "I Am You" for those that are wondering. Such a sad story all around.
Rachel Barber was indeed stunning and talented. It’s such a shame that she was gone too soon. She could’ve excelled so much more in her artistic pursuits. What’s even more unfortunate is that her family will forever be scarred of this incident. She was just too young. Hopefully Rachel’s family will still be able to attain proper justice for her murder.
the fact that she’s free is disgusting. what appeal for her case could there possibly be??? she killed a young girl in cold blood because this ADULT wanted to be this child so bad. nothing more infuriating
Caroline is a lot older than 35, possibly 40-42 today since this is from 1999-2000. now. Eerie, Cringy, horrific story! Thanks for telling it! I am 37 and in 1999-00, I was 14-15 too. Rachel would have my age today. Rip. 😢
I remember Rachel, her sisters went to school with my son. She was beautiful. Very sad. We lived in the same suburb only a few streets away , the whole community was devastated by this. There is a book her mother wrote about the case a titled 'Perfect Victim" and a movie was also made about the case.
Those cases where the police just assumes that the missing teen is a run away infuriate me. Even if a 15 year old is a run away, they're literal children. There are so many dangers out there, especially for young girls.
You should be able to sue police for not taking these cases seriously. If reported and no THOROUGH investigation was done and it ends in death or human trafficking. They should be held responsible
this scares me because i had a friend weirdly mimic my style and that alone had me creeped out. you never know especially with social media nowadays everyone wants to look like somebody and it can be taken this far 😢 r.i.p rachel
Happened to me in highschool ppl would take my pics off of Facebook and post them elsewhere. Never post pics of myself ever again. Just saying lol ppl on the internet have no boundaries or respect. Just don't post pics of urself.
I read the book about Rachel’s disappearance and murder, Perfect Victim by Elizabeth Southall. She was so loved, so beautiful and had so much potential. My heart breaks for Rachel’s family and for Manny who loved her so much also. Caroline deserved more time than 20 years and hopefully had therapy while she was in there. Great vid 👍
This story is the most frustrating story ever. The entire time it made me more and more annoyed listening to every single the police didn't do. The parents should sue those stupid police. And I can't believe a murderer is let off just after 14yrs. Especially when a life is taken away on purpose! She should be given the death sentence.
she even makes the ad entertaining! you have such an comfortable aura, i normally cant watch videos over 10 minutes. but when i watch you, it feels like im talking to a friend
I believe my Mum was sort of friends with Rachel, they went to school together before my mum moved to Adelaide, south Australia. My mum moved only a week before she went missing, she remembers hearing all about her on the news. My mum is a Christian and she spend hours on hours praying for her to be at peace and better than what had happened. She tried to beg my nanna to take her back to Melbourne so they could help look for her. When the news came that she had passed, my mum was so upset about it. My mum still doesn't talk about any of this, I had to ask her since she was 14/15 when this was happening and since she lived there. she told me, "I don't want to talk about it now, but all I want to say is people never deserved her". I am shocked that my Mum used to know her, but I am more shocked that, that's how she left. RIP RACHEL !!
Murderers, rapists, child abusers and other horrific people should never ever get less than 30 years no matter how ‘good’ they are in prison. If I could they’d be locked for life.
The amount of cases that could’ve been solved had cops actually taken it seriously and not assumed they were rebellious teenagers is astounding. A lot of these cases you talk about or that I hear about in general are cops saying oh they’re just runaways. And dismiss it instead of doing their job in the first place and made sure it was taken seriously
Justice system is so insane. She literally killed a young girl in cold blood for no logical reason except some kind of twisted envy and she is released after 14 years? Are you kidding me? Not even mentioning that they should sue the police for not doing their job and possibly being partially responsible for theirs daughers death.
I'm surprised you didn't know what a tram is, it's basically what was known in the old days as a streetcar. There are trams in several US cities like Portland, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Boston.
as somebody who's dreams were of ballet, and they failed because I'm too old / missed opportunities, this one is particularly hard. I feel like I would have loved her so much. I hope she's dancing in the clouds every day in peace. 🕊️ 🩰
Caroline was actually very pretty. It’s so sad how having low self esteem can get so deep, dark and depressing. The fact that she took someone else’s life over jealousy and self hatred and how COMMON it is is SOO SCARY.
A kid like that? And money from who? Confidential what? Nope🙅🏾♀️, I'm telling an adult and she's not going anywhere alone. I'm totally "that" friend, we are going to the pick up stop and telling her dad about this 'confidential money🙄'.
hearing stories like these makes me glad for iphones. because at least children/teens in trouble can contact help. and find my iphone exists. it makes me fearful to one day be a parent, but glad that these technologies exist
The police in this case were a bunch of Hitchcock and Scullys. 🤦 Also a side note, as a European I found it really funny how you had to explain what a tram was. 😹
In some places, they're called cable cars. San Francisco is famous for them, for example. Los Angeles used to have them, as you can find out in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Great movie, btw
"grand prix" is a motor sport event, and its pronounced like "gron pre". Also, excellent video, horrifying about how the police let them down so much :(.
This was an interesting story and sad to see how authorities handled and fumbled the investigation...but I buss out laughing when I heard "Grand Prix," I was in another room and came around the corner XD

When I heard the thing about the mannequin it just made me cry a little. To think that everyone tried so hard and had all of their efforts come to nothing is so tragic.
There's a movie based on this, called in her skin....tells her story of the girl being obsessed with her stalking, kidnapping, and killing her by promising her a modeling position that pays and she can keep the clothes as well
"Teenagers run away all the time, it's no big deal" So what? So fucking what?! You're telling me that an underage person out in the street with no one knowing their location is fine because its _common_ ?! Like they couldn't get kidnapped, attacked or worse! Highly irresponsible and grossly negligent. I don't care if my kid went to get McDonald's late and forgot to tell me. Do your damn job and help me find them!
You are a gifted storyteller. I also appreciate your down to earth personality. And lastly, your quirkiness is the right amount and seemingly authentic. Thank you for sharing your talents . Peace and goodwill
I can’t imagine being her parents….I think I would lose my mind when it came to my child and the police essentially mocking you. Props to her parents!! The strength that must take is amazing.
How the hell did she get released early and especially if she's shown no remorse 🤬 It's absolutely disgusting, that for family, their daughters life was on only valued at 14 years 😔
I find it so sick that she literally planned out becoming her. Stealing who she was and killing her. And still got released. Definitely didn’t serve any justice.
this case always hits me really hard. Rachel so clearly trusted Caroline, probably looked up to her as a young girl does to older family friends, and Caroline completely took advantage of that 💔
*TW: topics of child abuse* video idea: i recently watched a documentary on Netflix called "The trials of Gabriel Hernandez". Its about a young boy who was brutally abused by his mother, Pearl Hernandez and Step-Father, isauro Aguirre. I truly believe she is one of the worst mothers in America. They would beat him until he was bruised, wh!p him, sh00t him with bb guns, starve him, and lock him in a cabinet which they called "his room" They would laugh when they did all of these things. They have I believe 3 other children which they disnr do any of this to, and the reason they would beat Gabriel is absurd. They believed him to be gay. He wasn't, but since they thought he was they would punish him for it, and they told the other children if they told anyone about this they would do the same thing to them. I don't want to go too in depth with this case but its really worth watching. hope you see this Hailey live your video and if you decide to make a video on this i can't wait to watch💗, #justiceforgabrielhernandez
It's crazy because in 90 precent of all these type of cases. It's the police that don't want to help right away. If they just did their jobs and follow through with the evidence like not losing the evidence or not looking for them in the first 48 hours. They need to start looking into this.
heartbreaking case. the way her parents did everything, that picture of them holding the missing persons poster, I just can't, 20 years is not enough, I hope they can eventually find peace on their lives again, God bless
Maybe it's just a coincidence but I've noticed with the Australian cases you cover that the justice system isn't very hard on killers? They rarely seem to get life sentences, just 5-15 years which is merely a slap on the wrist for taking not just one life but destroying a family. Most cases I hear of in the US at least give a life sentence a lot of the time! (I'm a Brit, promise I'm not being baised)
This is something my BF comments on a lot. I’m Aussie and he’s from overseas. I never noticed it until he brought it up. Now it’s very frustrating to read about short sentencing for very violent criminals.. especially when they commit a second more violent crime after the first one. A woman near my home town was sexually assaulted and murdered, the guy who did it had a known track record of sexual assault and violent crimes. Very frustrating and scary to think about.
She's my age....And they let her out?!?!? How could anyone approve this!!!?!? Dear Lord, the corruption is so thick in the air these days that I fear we may all meet our demise because of it 😔

Melburnian here and actually lived in Box Hill for a while! Thanks for featuring a story from Melbourne. If I could politely help with the local and Aussie lingo; Melbourne is pronounced "Melben", similar to Brisbane ("Brisben"). Trams operate on roads that are also used by cars. If you think of trains as 'heavy rail' trams are considered 'light rail'. A tram station is called a tram stop. Cars have to give way to trams (lest you get crushed by them because they can't swerve) and to passengers disembarking. This means if you are driving in the lane next to a tram and the tram stops, you have to stop to let passengers pass. Melbourne has the largest operating tram network in the world. 'Home towns' are not referred to as such, we use city, suburb, locality or neighbourhood. If you were to refer to a home town in Australia, an Australian would assume you're talking about a regional town. (We would refer to a police station in the suburb we live in as our local police). HIPAA as it's known in the US does not exist in Australia, instead we have the Privacy Act which extends more protection of personal information than HIPAA. The Grand Prix is a motor sport event held in Melbourne yearly and pronounced "Gron-Pree".
Heartbreaking, Rachel and her family had everything taken away. Rachel’s potential was so high and it was wasted because of messed up people. This case is sad and police work in this case is is disappointing. Thank god for the community, it’s just saddening that they did what the police should’ve done.
I live in Melbourne and I never knew this story it's so messed up that she was let out, I can't believe that she could still be here in the same city as me and I feel terrible for Rachel and her family.
I swear, the mispronunciation of words scattered throughout the episodes is definitely my favorite part! It's truly an art 😆 but no sarcasm, it's the main reason I watch
Im studying to be a paralegal, and some of these cases with the police infuriate me. This is *why* paralegals are taught to do investigation themselves, no matter how limited resources there are. In the practice of law you should not be using BIAS whatsoever, which these policemen abused to the utmost degree. So infuriating, as so much pain could've been avoided from the start.
For me as an polish person the way you describe tram is so pure and funny, because in most countries of europe we have them in multiple cities and I never thought that in other places trams are not basic thing. Great episode as always btw
Los Angeles has a few but we call them light rails…or actually by the color of the line. There is the red line…goes by downtown….the blue line…the yellow line … and the green line - this one goes east west close to LAX.
I can't get enough of your videos! I feel like I have became a stereotype - I can't sleep without these videos playing in the background! Watching these is like chatting with a close friend at a sleepover or gossiping at school. Love you bestie!
It always seems like if you try to report someone missing you’re either told you have to wait 24-48 hours or that they’re a teen and they’re just a runaway 🙁
Or if you're here in UK you can't have anything done unless they hurt or kill you. I tried to report my ex for banging on my door and the police told me that unless he has laid hands on me there's nothing they could do.
Rachel was such a beautiful young lady (I looked her up) who was taken away by someone so deranged and selfish, I hope Caroline got the help and attention she needed. Just sick.
i think you forgot a very important detail. after the parents called the brothel about rachel, the brothel and the sex workers that worked there also played a big part in the search. they contacted other brothels and sex workers in the area to see if they spotted rachel.
in general, sex workers tend to help out a lot in these types of cases. they are very adamant about not wanting underaged girls or people being forced into doing sex work. they also know first hand how shitty the police are because of how they treat cases of sex workers going missing or being murdered. they often have to take matters into their own hands because they know the cops won’t do anything.
I hope she sees this comment and modifies the story
Yes I was just about to say that. I was waiting to see if she brought it up again. The brothel really did a lot to try and help.
I remember a newspaper report from years ago in which a man killed 3 prostitutes and chopped up their bodies putting the parts in bin bags. The finger was pointed at this guy several times by other women but police claimed that it was their policy to punish prostitutes not protect them. Disgusting.
That’s amazing thanks for sharing
i actually wasn’t aware of this detail so thank you so much for sharing!!

In Melbourne we all try to help each other out. Just a shame there’s some creepy asses in every city 😮💨
They do this a lot in Austalia and the UK, dress up a mannequin in the same or similar outfit.
It’s so horrible how the police thinks every teenager is a runaway. It’s the same here in the US….no one takes it seriously. So so sad. 😪
And even if a child is a runaway how is it not a priority I will never understand the police system ANYWHERE:(
@@spiderbakeryx exactly. It’s like no one even cares anymore. 🥺. Having teenagers myself this horrifies me.

@@Zombina638what??
We all know women murder thanks to patriarchy.
bffr
exactly what I was thinking. how could they fabricate a whole ass story with no evidence?!

I guess it just varies in different countries, in Australia, it's actually 2 years
Make it make sense?
Hearing how the community came together to try to find her in the face of police negligence is truly amazing. It takes a village.
It truly does
But I will say it’s absolutely disgusting that the police did the family the way they did💯 I hope they sue the police department for negligence or something and I also think it’s extremely concerning that this chick was able to be released after only 14 1/2 years all while saying she feels no remorse for what she did like who’s to say if she doesn’t feel guilty about what she did to this girl that she won’t do it to another girl because she doesn’t feel guilt damn sociopaths.. but like how is it fair that somebody strangled somebody to death serve 14 1/2 years and then gets to just go live their life as if nothing happened?!
Agreed :(
I say it was because of a Village. Girl would be free if they didn’t.
the fact that they let caroline go free after only 14 years is heartbreaking. not only is it dangerous for rachel's family, but it is so disrespectful to rachel letting her killer just walk amongst society. the system failed her :(
14 years is a long time. I’m sure Rachel’s family had moved on by that point.

It honestly sounds like the police are in cahoots with a sex trafficking ring locally. That’s probably why they are constantly harping about forget about her because they believe she was sex trafficked and it’s almost impossible to get your loved ones back from that. Disgusting!

This was my exact thought as I listened to this story!
another commenter pointed this out, but the one they called actually really helped in their investigation and handing out the fliers
not saying that wouldn’t be possible with any other one, but I doubt it with that specific one
I thought the same thing! I think you’re on to something here..
People don’t even know how common it is for police to be in on the organized crime in the area. This sounds very believable

Statistics: missing children are usually recovered within the first 72 hours. The more time, the more possibility they're in severe danger, or deceased.

Considering that there have been many cases involving cops raping/killing/trafficking girls and women...yeah it's not a stretch it's just a sad fact.
You're spot on. 👌
There was a huge case in the 80s where a little boy was snatched out of his yard and the mom has been adamant it was a police officer. The FBI got involved and tried to say the mom was crazy and lost her mind since loosing her son to discredit her but she’s never changed her story. I wish I remembered his name.

Anyone who would want to be me has GOT to be crazy 🤪

Rachel would've had a bright future. She would've been incredibly happy if it wasn't for the babysitter- can't even bring myself to say she's family to her. A very supportive ACTUAL family, healthy relationship, very supportive and caring friends. Very talented and beautiful girl. Why.
Sorry but I’m absolutely sobbing at “grand pricks” 😭😭💀💀
I remember seeing the movie based off of this case. It was called "In Her Skin" and also called "I Am You" for those that are wondering. Such a sad story all around.
This movie was very good. I went into it not knowing anything about this case. The murder scene was so intensely real. Left me pretty stunned
The murder scene was just brutal. I hate this girl. The fact that she is out there is a travesty.
is this on Netflix?
And if that doesn’t work… start burning stations down
idk where u live but in my country they recently introduced this (abt 10 yrs ago) and cops take stuff way more seriously now!

It’s so frustrating how she took away her whole life yet she still has so much of her life she gets to live. Breaks my heart so much
I read the book about Rachel’s disappearance and murder, Perfect Victim by Elizabeth Southall.
Maybe it’s her annoying voice

Not even mentioning that they should sue the police for not doing their job and possibly being partially responsible for theirs daughers death.
the only conclusion i can think of is she’s got more money than we know and those two “movers” are... sus
like i’m surprised she didn’t get life in prison considering she PLANNED this and was a crazy stalker
I'm surprised you didn't know what a tram is, it's basically what was known in the old days as a streetcar. There are trams in several US cities like Portland, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Boston.
In Wisconsin we call the tram a trolley :)
There’s a tram in Detroit too
San Francisco’s is called a trolly to most people.
Tram is also a very common public transport option throughout EU.
@@everlynevins In the EU yes but in America it's apparently unheard of for some.
as somebody who's dreams were of ballet, and they failed because I'm too old / missed opportunities, this one is particularly hard.

I feel so sad for Rachel. If you can’t trust your old baby sitter, people you’ve known your whole life, who can you trust :(
This case is SO genuinely creepy wow wtf. One of my favs you’ve done. Also you told it great Haley, very suspenseful.
I can't imagine having my child lost and the police acting like this
God it's infuriating
How the police responded to Rachel's disappearance, you would think they had something to do with it
This woman is working so hard to bring us such good content.
hearing stories like these makes me glad for iphones. because at least children/teens in trouble can contact help. and find my iphone exists. it makes me fearful to one day be a parent, but glad that these technologies exist
i understand the feeling to be insecure, but murdering someone just so you could be that person never solves anything
The police in this case were a bunch of Hitchcock and Scullys. 🤦
Also a side note, as a European I found it really funny how you had to explain what a tram was. 😹
Perfect metaphor 👍🏻
In some places, they're called cable cars. San Francisco is famous for them, for example. Los Angeles used to have them, as you can find out in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Great movie, btw
In San Diego we call it the trolly. That part made me giggle. Also "grand pricks" 😆 Great video though.

Same lol. The video was very well done though. I appreciate the content and the laugh

I enjoy how you talk about the victim and their life so that they aren't just defined by the horrible things that happened to them
"Teenagers run away all the time, it's no big deal"
So what?
Jealousy is a sickness, you’re my new favorite True Crime RUclipsr. First it was Kendall Rae, Christina Randall, now You. Great content!
Every single one of these cops should be fired this is making me so angry
imagine being jealous of a 15 year old🤦♂️
heartbreaking case. the way her parents did everything, that picture of them holding the missing persons poster, I just can't, 20 years is not enough, I hope they can eventually find peace on their lives again, God bless
“In her skin” is based off of this story it’s sad but beautiful…you’ll cry 🦋🦋
Maybe it's just a coincidence but I've noticed with the Australian cases you cover that the justice system isn't very hard on killers? They rarely seem to get life sentences, just 5-15 years which is merely a slap on the wrist for taking not just one life but destroying a family. Most cases I hear of in the US at least give a life sentence a lot of the time! (I'm a Brit, promise I'm not being baised)
Australia doesnt punish like they should.
We tend to have very light sentences here unfortunately, and not just for murder.

If I could politely help with the local and Aussie lingo;
Melbourne is pronounced "Melben", similar to Brisbane ("Brisben").
Omg the fact that Manni, Rachel’s bf at the time still post about her on his Instagram and he is still dance ☹️☹️
Just a little FYI, there’s no HIPAA in Australia - the Australian equivalent is called the Privacy Act.
Well that was over ten years ago….I just read they’ve been renamed to alphabet letters….
Yeah, in America we don't really have widespread public transportation outside of really big cities often!
Thank you so much for covering this story. As an Aussie just wanted you to know Melbourne is pronounced like Mel-bin not Mel-Born 😊
Rachel was such a beautiful young lady (I looked her up) who was taken away by someone so deranged and selfish, I hope Caroline got the help and attention she needed. Just sick.
