That’s a huge thing that “strict” parents use. It’s where they make both the siblings pit against each other to the point the relationship is broken. I kept every single secret about my brother, but he would tell everything about me. It was his sick game. He would even pretend to try and tell my parents about something I did (small things but my abusive parents were insane) just to get me to have multiple panic attacks and cry. I’m part of the Filipino community and live in Melbourne. I was only 6 years old at the time but my parents (both Filipino) still talk about this case to this day. My mum mentioned the whole Filipino community both in the Philippines and Australia were incredibly shattered by this case.
Its sad cause Filipinos are such hard workers. They usually mind their own business and keep to themselves and community. So for something like this to happen it would have been devasting. I always respect the Filo hustle - they save money to establish themselves in their newly adopted country - but they also send money overseas cause they family back home. This is why I can understand the pressure the family was in.

Back in 2003 an asian girl from my high school, along with her cousin, killed her sick parents and burnt the house down!!! She wasn't going to be "allowed" to leave for college because the parents were sick & needed to be taken care of. The girl was extremely smart & worked hard to get impeccable grades. I was in some classes with her. Now, she's in jail.

Am I the only one that doesn't think the parents were that strict. They gave the kids huge rewards for very minimal things, and the punishments like taking away your phone or car when they misbehave doesn't seem too extreme. Also before anyone says anything I did grow up with immigrant parents who were semi-strict EDIT: I wrote this right before they shipped off their daughter which is very extreme but I still stand by everything else

Except their dating rule I don't think they were extreme at all, there might've been other things that made them strict and extremely demanding, but getting and taking away a car, money, living space college, inheritance, ect. for getting good grades and being successful is completely fair, it's their parents money and the parents just wanted them to do well and by the time they were adults they could choose to move away and do their own thing if they really wanted to
If your parents are paying for your things while you’re a student, it’s reasonable to expect those things to be paid for since that’s what they agreed to. If they didn’t actually want to support their kids unconditionally, they should have just told the truth and said “I don’t want to pay for you, so you need to get a job and pay for your own car/phone/etc.” Otherwise they are taking advantage of their situation, and that’s pretty creepy. For high school and even college kids if your parents have money it is normal to expect a certain amount of that money to provide for your resources even if your parents to are mad at you. That’s why you can relax and focus on studying if you’re a student and your parents have enough money that you don’t need to work. But the parents can’t have it both ways- either act like an adult and provide for your kids even when you’re mad at them, or tell them that they need to get a job and pay for their own stuff. Don’t be wishy-washy in the middle, acting like you’re going to be reliable but then changing it.
They forced their daughter to pursue studies she didn't want, that alone is extreme and the worst thing you could do to a child. Not excusing Jennifer's actions tho.

Wow, so glad I found this. This happened in my suburb and the uneasiness of the community at the time was something else. When the truth of what actually happened came out our high school hosted a day talking about the pressure and importance of talking about your struggles. It was a lot to deal with as a 13/14 year old but I guess important too. Before this the area was a very heavy immigrant, everyone stays in their own lane, you don't talk about what's happening in the home place but I think that's definitely changed. There is a lot more 'checking on your neighbours' ever since. Maybe that's the legacy of the poor family who definitely deserved better?
I've definitely heard about this case before since the family are all Filipino and I'm also a Filipino myself. It's just awful to think that some children have the capacity to literally harm/murder someone just to get what they wanted in return. The fact that the son fooled the authorities is just making my blood boil...well, for the most part. And he even spray-painted racist remarks on the side of their house to disguise the fact that there was actually a murder scene inside instead of just a typical break-in. I mean, that left me speechless. Anyway, thanks Hailey for covering this whole case. 29:22- I mean my friend played "A Thousand Years" for her dad's funeral, which is quite interesting to say the least. I don't remember what we played for my dad's, probably because it was just funeral home music. I would have loved to put my dad's favorite songs, but I was ten so I wasn't in charge of that. As someone who is born into an Asian family, I agree about things (like your cellphone) being taken away if you did not get good grades and you will be punished and you need to do your very best to pass in order to become one of the top students in school. I can't believe Seth will do such a thing to his family. I feel bad about the sister, Claudine, who revealed to their parents that Seth was slacking off in his studies and that triggered him to commit the crime. His hatred to his parents grew, when they pressured him to do law or medicine instead of doing music, which is the thing that he loves. Thank goodness the accountant didn't give him the inheritance of more than 1 million dollars. If he did, Seth will waste the money that his parents inherited in other things. He kept on giving alibis to the police just to cover up his crime until evidence from various witnesses proved that he is indeed the suspect. He took 3 lives and those 3 lives of his family won't bring them back and I hope that he will rot behind bars for the rest of his life.
To clarify for the reference to Lizzie Borden, Lizzie was not convicted during her trial. She was acquitted and there's still a lot of debate as to whether she actually did committ the murders or not, so it's likely not a great example of personally motivated attacks since she wasn't convicted and there's evidence/conjecture she didn't do it

Crazy we went to the same highschool. Also wanted to add I can understand why he grew an interest in music. This school was very supportive of this by organising concerts and pushing students to participate in music events and play instruments.

i'm a filipino, i've actually watched another video about this case. it's actually quite common to sing at funerals in the philippines and you can even hire a band play for an entire night, whether english or tagalog, people who attend can also sing. also this isn't the filipino representation we were asking for, this case makes me sad, Seth is straight up terrible.

That’s a huge thing that “strict” parents use. It’s where they make both the siblings pit against each other to the point the relationship is broken. I kept every single secret about my brother, but he would tell everything about me. It was his sick game. He would even pretend to try and tell my parents about something I did (small things but my abusive parents were insane) just to get me to have multiple panic attacks and cry. This is why “strict” parenting needs to be banned. It fucks with your mind so bad

I’m part of the Filipino community and live in Melbourne. I was only 6 years old at the time but my parents (both Filipino) still talk about this case to this day. My mum mentioned the whole Filipino community both in the Philippines and Australia were incredibly shattered by this case.
Its sad cause Filipinos are such hard workers. They usually mind their own business and keep to themselves and community. So for something like this to happen it would have been devasting. I always respect the Filo hustle - they save money to establish themselves in their newly adopted country - but they also send money overseas cause they family back home. This is why I can understand the pressure the family was in.

When they got old and want to retire they know they wouldn’t have enough money to take care of themselves and they son. The son murder them both and they wasn’t tiger parents but bunny parents.
I say if someone love money it don’t matter for good you raise them. If they in love with money and see a easily way to get it, people will and do murder you for it no matter how good you are to that person. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

Back in 2003 an asian girl from my high school, along with her cousin, killed her sick parents and burnt the house down!!! She wasn't going to be "allowed" to leave for college because the parents were sick & needed to be taken care of. The girl was extremely smart & worked hard to get impeccable grades. I was in some classes with her. Now, she's in jail.

Am I the only one that doesn't think the parents were that strict. They gave the kids huge rewards for very minimal things, and the punishments like taking away your phone or car when they misbehave doesn't seem too extreme. Also before anyone says anything I did grow up with immigrant parents who were semi-strict

Except their dating rule I don't think they were extreme at all, there might've been other things that made them strict and extremely demanding, but getting and taking away a car, money, living space college, inheritance, ect. for getting good grades and being successful is completely fair, it's their parents money and the parents just wanted them to do well and by the time they were adults they could choose to move away and do their own thing if they really wanted to

If your parents are paying for your things while you’re a student, it’s reasonable to expect those things to be paid for since that’s what they agreed to. If they didn’t actually want to support their kids unconditionally, they should have just told the truth and said “I don’t want to pay for you, so you need to get a job and pay for your own car/phone/etc.” Otherwise they are taking advantage of their situation, and that’s pretty creepy. For high school and even college kids if your parents have money it is normal to expect a certain amount of that money to provide for your resources even if your parents to are mad at you. That’s why you can relax and focus on studying if you’re a student and your parents have enough money that you don’t need to work. But the parents can’t have it both ways- either act like an adult and provide for your kids even when you’re mad at them, or tell them that they need to get a job and pay for their own stuff. Don’t be wishy-washy in the middle, acting like you’re going to be reliable but then changing it.
They forced their daughter to pursue studies she didn't want, that alone is extreme and the worst thing you could do to a child. Not excusing Jennifer's actions tho.

Wow, so glad I found this. This happened in my suburb and the uneasiness of the community at the time was something else. When the truth of what actually happened came out our high school hosted a day talking about the pressure and importance of talking about your struggles. It was a lot to deal with as a 13/14 year old but I guess important too. Before this the area was a very heavy immigrant, everyone stays in their own lane, you don't talk about what's happening in the home place but I think that's definitely changed. There is a lot more 'checking on your neighbours' ever since. Maybe that's the legacy of the poor family who definitely deserved better?

I've definitely heard about this case before since the family are all Filipino and I'm also a Filipino myself. It's just awful to think that some children have the capacity to literally harm/murder someone just to get what they wanted in return. The fact that the son fooled the authorities is just making my blood boil...well, for the most part. And he even spray-painted racist remarks on the side of their house to disguise the fact that there was actually a murder scene inside instead of just a typical break-in. I mean, that left me speechless. Anyway, thanks Hailey for covering this whole case. i think it might be because these parents were a bit nicer to their son probably because he is a boy.
actually his parents were not that bad. he got a car n money n freedom to do everything he wanted all they expected from him was good grades n good behavior. since the father struggled financially growing up he wanted a gd life for his. n when he performed good they literally gave him everything he wanted. n if he behaved bad, taking his phone etc.. isnt that bad lol its not like they physically or verbally abused him. but they were kinda unfair with their daughter!

I disagree on the fact that no one would sell the stuff of there dead family if they are innocent. My sister would not only make as much money as she could from my dad's passing, I have heard her say how much she could get from his house and belonging after she was all proud to tell me she manage to get me out of the will. 29:22- I mean my friend played "A Thousand Years" for her dad's funeral, which is quite interesting to say the least. I don't remember what we played for my dad's, probably because it was just funeral home music. I would have loved to put my dad's favorite songs, but I was ten so I wasn't in charge of that. In general, I wouldn't think this is weird. Could have been a family fave song.

As someone who is born into an Asian family, I agree about things (like your cellphone) being taken away if you did not get good grades and you will be punished and you need to do your very best to pass in order to become one of the top students in school.
I can't believe Seth will do such a thing to his family. I feel bad about the sister, Claudine, who revealed to their parents that Seth was slacking off in his studies and that triggered him to commit the crime. His hatred to his parents grew, when they pressured him to do law or medicine instead of doing music, which is the thing that he loves. Thank goodness the accountant didn't give him the inheritance of more than 1 million dollars. If he did, Seth will waste the money that his parents inherited in other things.
He kept on giving alibis to the police just to cover up his crime until evidence from various witnesses proved that he is indeed the suspect. He took 3 lives and those 3 lives of his family won't bring them back and I hope that he will rot behind bars for the rest of his life.

To clarify for the reference to Lizzie Borden, Lizzie was not convicted during her trial. She was acquitted and there's still a lot of debate as to whether she actually did committ the murders or not, so it's likely not a great example of personally motivated attacks since she wasn't convicted and there's evidence/conjecture she didn't do it

Crazy we went to the same highschool. Also wanted to add I can understand why he grew an interest in music. This school was very supportive of this by organising concerts and pushing students to participate in music events and play instruments.

i'm a filipino, i've actually watched another video about this case. it's actually quite common to sing at funerals in the philippines and you can even hire a band play for an entire night, whether english or tagalog, people who attend can also sing. also this isn't the filipino representation we were asking for, this case makes me sad, Seth is straight up terrible.
