I LOVE HST and 3D illusion quilts. The HST gives an almost unlimited number of possible designs, most of them incredibly striking.
Thank you for your work with putting this pattern together and your generosity with sharing the pattern for free!!
I have a suggestion for those who decide to try this design, or any other quilting pattern for that matter: use a ballpoint needle! Mistakes happen, and since a ballpoint needle pushes the thread aside rather than piercing then, the fabric isn't damaged by the removal of the thread.
Thank you for the well made pattern. Happy stitching!!
Great tip! I always thought ball point needles were just for knits. I will try this! Thanks for watching and commenting.
A lifetime ago, a supervisor wore this tie that always intrigued me. One day, I asked to borrow it so I could copy it. His wife flipped out when he arrived home without it. Anyway, I made several copies. enlarged it and have kept it all these years. Maybe 25 yrs. I swear this quilt is THAT TIE. I AM SOOOO EXCITED!
What a great story, thanks for sharing that! Everything old is new again I suppose. Thanks for watching.
Wow. Extremely thorough tutorial. This pattern, with your clear instructions, excites me to try it. Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
Thank heavens you said Accuquilt! That's a lot of half square triangles!
I don't think I could have done it without AccuQuilt. I don't have the patience! LOL Thanks for watching.
Thank you Carol, it is impossible to get a better, clearest explanation. Wonderful tutorial
You are so welcome!
Thank you for taking the time to break down this pattern, and giving you directions out for free! I really appreciate it .
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
There are many ways to make multiple half square triangles at a time... this would be a great way to create those H.S.T. --- it is very helpful that you have added a list of the colors needed and the amount of them. The breaking it down into 4 quadrants is also very helpful! If you search you can find instructions and videos on making H.S.T. 4, 8, or 16 at a time!
Those methods are great. I use them quite often. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching.
This has been on my to do list! I have finally purchased fabric to make it... as soon as I am done the project I am working on.... I will start. Thank you for the pattern and your videos!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
I love this quilt and the colors. Thank you for breaking this down into smaller sections. Your AMAZING.❤
You are so welcome!
I love the way you do your videos. It is broken down so exact ans with great care in directions. I was slightly overwhelmed with the pattern until I watched your tutorial, I know I can complete this pattern with amazing results.
Yes you can! Have fun and thanks for watching.
Beautiful pattern. Thank you for sharing it and providing the tutuorial.
You’re welcome 😊
Wow, this is an awesome pattern! I think the 4 sections diagram will help immensely. I can see why the Accu-quilt cutter would be a real time saver. Looks like a great winter project when we are stuck indoors. I have to make this.
Thanks for the pattern and the wonderful tips that are so helpful. ❤️
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Carol I just love all your videos. It would really help me to visualize the piecing and the ironing if you had a photograph of the back of one of the squares. I have thought this on other videos. Don't know if what I am asking for is a big deal. You have already done so much work already. Thank you. You have taught me so much. You are so clear and to the point. I really appreciate it.
Great idea!f I haven't quilted it yet so I can do that. I'll respond here once I have the picture. Thanks for watching.
I can see why this quilt pattern spoke to you, Carol. I hope you’ll show off the finished piece when you get it quilted. I enjoyed your explanation of your steps and lessons learned.
This is the kind of design I enjoy studying but I’d never make it because, for my brain, laying out the pieces would be too taxing.
Thank you for yet another visual adventure. Blessings.
I will post a picture after it is quilted! Thanks for watching.
I made this quilt and bc carol did it in section on instructions, it made it very easy for me to accomplish. ❤
Wonderful! Thanks so much for watching.
Thank you Carol. Bless you 🙏 ♥️
You are so welcome and same to you! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the video. You make quilts that look complicated easy. This is one I will be making.
Have fun! Thanks for watching!
Another winner Carol. Thank you so much. I will be making this for a great nephew who is 6’3. I am going to draw it in EQ8 and make myself a coloring Page to play with colors.
Wonderful! If you have EQ8, here is the project file...

Thanks for watching.
What’s EQ8?
I'm not sure why I haven't come across you here in RUclips land, as I've been in love with visual tutorials since my first class in 1992. That said, I am trilled to have connected and subscribed today. This lesson inspires me to go finish a top of all HSTs. Perhaps I will be back to do your layout soon. Thank you, very good tip about one or two blocks at a time.. been there done that.
Welcome aboard! I started quilt making in 1992 as well! Thanks for watching.
Another great quilt to add to my list to make! Thank you so much!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching.
This kind of instructions makes sense to my brain. Thank you so very much for making it simple!!!!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Ur amazing, thank you. I've needed a 3D quilt for a graduation next year. This looks perfect. Caught my eye immediately on my search. Thank you for your time, knowledge and for recording and sharing too. That's priceless and with an endless blessing for many of us.
Thanks again!!!!!
Chicka D Thanks for the kind comments. This is a fun quilt to do. Great gift for the graduate and congratulations to them. Thanks for watching.
Great quilt. Thanks for the pattern! I always learn something when I watch your videos. You have some of the best quilting tutorials on RUclips.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
I haven't been able to find the link to download the pattern.
Simply magnificent! My husband would truly love to receive it, but it might have to be a gift to myself. I love hst's!!!
How about 2 quilts!! You could use different colors! Thanks for watching.
wow when I prepared this quilt, I did it off the picture breaking it down into individual blocks. Very easy to make mistakes based on doing it on a picture.
I made this in a little bigger than crib size for my Granddaughter. I am pleased with how it looks. Thanks for the pattern, I only ended up using 2x2 versus 3x4.
Great size for a crib quilt. Thanks for watching.
Wonderful!! I so appreciate your instructions!
You are so welcome!
Loved your video. I'm going to sew a quilt. Thank you for all your videos.
Have fun! And thanks for watching.
Thank yoou! Very good instructions! I appreciate it!
That is stunning! Thank you
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Just came across your channel. Wanted to say Thank You for sharing your pattern, and it comes at the perfect time, as our guild is doing an illusion quilt challenge. Can’t wait to get started.
Thank you so much! and thanks for watching.
Quilt is beautiful and looks difficult. Thank you.
I wouldn't call it difficult but it really does require lots of concentration! Best wishes and thanks for watching.
This is utterly beautiful! I cannot wait to try it.
Hope you enjoy it! It is really fun! Thanks for watching.
Great quilt!! Thank you so much for sharing your pattern! and your video is very helpful for getting it all assembled correctly!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for sharing! That is a beautiful quilt! 🤩 I hope to try this, this year. (Trying to clear out half done projects.) 😀🩷
I’ve made a test block. The HST method I used is the strip tube ruler. Worked great, just need to be careful not to stretch fabric as many bias edges. HST doesn’t require squaring up using this method . Thanks for you wonderful videos.
I am not familiar with the strip tube ruler but I'm so glad it worked for you! Have fun making this quilt and thanks for watching.
Great explanation. Thank you.🌸
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Deine Stimme hat eine so besondere Schwingung ❤️
Thank you! and thanks for watching.
WOW! Love your colour choice.
Can't go wrong with teal! Thanks for watching.
Fascinating design...think I'll try 1 block as suggested. Think the grunge fabric works well in the design!
The Grunge really does work well with this design! Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much for making this quilt breakdown so super easy❤
Fantastic pattern. Can this quilt be made wider (as a queen size)? Can a 4” finished hst be used instead?
Yes! If you use a 4" finished HST then the quilt block will finish at 32". A 3 x 3 setting would give you a 96" x 96" finished quilt. Thanks for watching!
This is the second video of yours that I've watched, and once again, you have a VERY good way of explaining things. Thank you for sharing!
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
New to your channel and quilting. Thanks for the free pattern. Looks like a good one to try. Your channel is very, very helpful. Following for Every!!🤗
Thanks for watching!
Awesome quilt! I found the download for the pattern. This is next on my list to make.
It's fun to make! Thanks for watching.
Love it! Your colors look great together. Thanks for sharing the pattern. It has great info and your charts are very helpful with the number of HST's for each color combo.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching.
So cool!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
@@CarolThelen My Pleasure! I so appreciate quality quilts that can be used and enjoyed by boys and men. Don't get me wrong!!!! I love softer, flowery quilts too! Its just that good quality quilts for men and boys are often hard to find. So thank you for quilts that qualify!
I love this! Thanks for the link. Your explanation is very precise. I have subscribed because you are a good teacher.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Awesome
Thanks for watching.
Ausome block....thanks a lot mam....I will do and send u photo
Great! It's a fun quilt to make. Thanks for watching.
Hi. I don’t have a die cut machine and I have no idea what triangles on a roll is. Can you tell me what size squares I need to make the half square triangles the old fashioned way.? Thanks
Here you go! - ruclips.net/video/XqqjcDj4SII/видео.htmlsi=dOjyNm8adIdzlNr9
Благодарю за перевод на русский язык.❤
What size to you recommend cutting your yardage into to make the HST? 10” square?
The HST should finish at 3". If you are using the 8 at a time method to make HST, then you would cut 7-3/4" squares. Check out this video - ruclips.net/video/g5A9JZ4_Ux0/видео.html.
I think that's what you are asking. Make a test block before cutting all the yardage. Good luck and thanks for watching.
If you don’t have accut machine or the triangle papers. What size strips do you need to cut for half square triangles
Since there are so many half square triangles, I recommend you use the Half Square Triangles 8 At A Time method to make the 3" finished HST. Here is a video showing how to use this technique. It is fast and an efficient use of fabric. - ruclips.net/video/g5A9JZ4_Ux0/видео.html
Good luck and thanks for watching.
LOVE
Thank you!
Using the 3” finished hst how much yardage will I need to complete a queen sized quilt? Thank you.
If you add another column to make 4 blocks across and 4 down (16 blocks) the finished size will be 96" x 96". You will need about 3 to 3.25 yards of each of the 4 fabrics. Good luck!
Thank you for the video and pattern. Do you have this pattern available for a king size quilt, so I would know how much fabric to buy?
This is the only size I have. The blocks are 24". If you know how many 24" blocks you'll need for the king, then compare that to the 12 blocks in this quilt. So if you need 24 blocks, then double the fabric requirements. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.
Beautiful quilt! But you lost me at 768 HST! 😲
I had to laugh out loud when I read this!! I debated with myself if I should include that little tid bit but don't let that discourage you! Thanks for watching.
@@CarolThelen 😂 with my Accuquilt, it’s doable. I really like the quilt and your videos are awesome.
Carol please let me know what you use for JN quilts. Not show quilts
If you're asking about fabric....anything goes. I mix batiks and regular cottons. For JN quilts I tend to go for the smaller prints. Good luck and thanks for watching.
If I were to purchase the HST roll, what size do I need to get? 3" or 3 1/2"? Will I need to count for seam allowance?
Good question. When you look for the size triangle to buy, you want "3 inch finished". That will be the correct size. Once you sew those and remove the paper, they will measure 3-1/2" which includes the seam allowance. Here is an example shrsl.com/3yfcj
Thanks for watching.
What are cutting instructions. I assume strips..
You cut 3" finished HST. Cut your strips to fit your AccuQuilt die and then cut the required number of HST. Thanks for watching.
Which one is die 55703? I can not find that one. Please Help.
Here you go…www.accuquilt.com/go-half-square-triangle-3-finished-square-die-55703.html?SSAID=641491&sscid=91k6_10sid8&SAS&
Can this be made without accuquilt
Yes, the instructions tell you how.
An alternate name of practice makes perfect for this block. Lol
You got that right! Thanks for watching.
How to I get to your blog to get the pattern
Look in the video description for the link. It is not in the blog. Thanks for watching.
Where do I get the pattern
Links to all my free patterns can be found just below the video and click on "Show more" in the grey shaded section. Here is the link to this pattern

Thanks for watching.
I didn't find the video at all helpful - you just read the directions to us. I would have liked to see what size squares you start with and how big the HSTs are before joining. 3/5" right?
The video is there to explain the pattern. Did you download the pattern? On page 1 of the free downloadable pattern it says the half square triangles finish at 3" which means the cut size of 3-1/2" includes the 1/4" seam allowance. Thanks for watching.
