You're right, Julia, but I don't know why. But I also think that a lot of people wear purchased hair and no one even knows.

Hi Elle. I think you are right that many people don’t know someone is wearing fake hair.

This is such an important conversation for this community. This is why I adore you ! I have always felt this way , everything else is ok but not a wig. I don’t understand 😓

Thank you for bringing this up. I don’t get it either. Everything on me is real except for the hair.

Thank you for sharing your opinion, Marie. I used to get my nails done years ago. I’ve worn fake eyelashes. Now, I usually wear light makeup and wigs.

High heels to look taller; body shapers for disguising fat; makeup to make our eyes and lips look bigger; serums and devices to erase wrinkles, I am sure there are other things like this. It makes no sense, especially since wigs are getting better and more realistic all the time. And celebrities wear them all the time. I cannot understand the wig rejection or phobia. All of these other tricks and gimmicks are to make us look and seem better than we are. There should be absolutely no distinction!

Hi Julia! I do agree with you. I remember in the 1960's and 1970's wigs were more excepted. There were lots of wig stores too even at the mall. Our culture started making fun of wigs. We had the comedy shows making fun and people in general thought they were weird or for old ladies. It is strange. Other cultures have always worn them. Wigs now are so beautiful most people would not know unless they were told.

Yes I definitely feel like there is some kind of issue with people accepting wigs. I've even had women tell me wigs are only for cancer patients or women with total hair loss. It really bothers me that like you said women are okay with fake nails, fake eyebrows, piling on tons of makeup to cover their true self, fake tans, all this other but when it comes to wigs its like a big deal. Really sad. I don't understand it at all. I've even had black women comment that I can't wear wigs similar to their hair styles such as a water wave curl.

Thank you for mentioning addition issues in the wig community that deserve attention, such as, anyone stating that wigs are for cancer patients or total hair loss. That’s an opinion. I, too, had a woman say this to me years ago. She said I didn’t need a wig. It’s amusing the ego and audacity of a human being telling another what they need or don’t need, or can or cannot wear. I think their remark comes from insecurity or “hair envy.” I don’t understand someone saying wigs advertised to their culture shouldn’t be worn by other ethnic groups. Makes no sense.

Hello Lexsee. You’re right - the African American culture has embraced wig wearing. Hasidic or Orthodox jewish women cover their natural hair after marriage with scarves or wigs.

I think people still associate wigs with being ill from chemo. I also think that people associate wigs with LOSS. When you get the other cosmetic things you spoke about, people consider them more of an ENHANCEMENT. I am so thankful for influencers like you, Julia! You have made my journey a less perilous one, and I am proud that I took the leap into this wonderful world! Life is too short, and waking up every day feeling confident is the best feeling! Thank you for this segment!

Wow, Angela, that is very insightful! I believe you are right. Many people DO consider wigs with “loss” or “sickness.” Whereas people consider false fingernails and eyelashes with “enhancements.” I appreciate your kind words. 🌸 You have given me new insights into this…thank you!

Good question. It shouldn't be taboo. Even in the 1700s,they wore wigs and it was common.

You are right, Liz. 🌸 Wigs have existed since ancient Egypt - possibly before.

My mother used to wear wigs in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s when it was super popular. You could get them at K-mart! Now I think it’s a stigma because it’s associated with old ladies (at least for Caucasians; wig wearing is much more common and accepted in the Black community). I really do hope it changes! I agree that it’s so weird what “fake things” society will and won’t accept.

I never knew wigs were sold at K-Mart! Interesting! I hope our modern Caucasian culture learns to accept wigs. Many of our ancestors in Europe wore wigs, such as during the time of Amadeus Mozart. Thank you for watching and sharing this great information. 🥂🌸
