Look all of our problems on this planet right now come from greed and overpopulation. We have got to bring down the worlds population to a sustainable number, which is somewhere around 2 billion maximum.

With restoring nature such as forests and grasslands and other types of eco regions which could increase ice cover a bit. They are the ones responsible for providing us with water.
There is a class of people who would rather see the world end than see a world where they are not lords of the realm.

Here is something to think about-
*Food wastage in the US is estimated to be 40%
*30% of fresh water in the US is used for food production, processing, distribution etc.
*Food production and distribution activities in the US estimated to be responsible for around 35% of total emissions
*42% of all adults aged 20+ in the US are obese
This was a perfect group of facts. The food systems are so inefficient it is genuinely distressing.

@@paranoah1925 and during the high period of Covid-19, we also see the insane wastage of food production. Even when there is a lack of demand, food producer still keep production at full throttle (even forcing worker to risk their lives working through the pandemic). All because they need to keep their inventory always full to not miss out when the lockdown is over. And so, they keep producing food, which cant be sold, then said food are scrapped ENTIRELY, then start growing again, and the cycle repeats until the lock down is over.

MANY poorer countries choose to spend their national budget on food and supplies so people can live while they cant work, as to not let this shit blown out of control, the result speaks for itself. tfw for weapons any number of trillions $$$ is OK, but for the people its always too expensive, acting like the country itself is 1 paycheck away from bankruptcy.

We get heavily advertised a way of living that we do not know the implications of by powerful corporations.
Overwork and then overspend to mask the misery of overworking. Psychologist and data scientists PhD's hired by companies to figure out the best way to make advertisements to manipulate people to spend more on everything including eating, drinking and being wasteful. One person cannot out think an army of scientist studdying how to persuade you. Spend more, throw away more. Which means more purchases and being further trapped to having to work more.
I think it was nestle that had been over extracting water for years in California. They had bought some very old water rights privately that were suppose to equal 3-4 trains worth of water back in the 1930s and they basically saw an opportunity to over extract by messing with the weight and bought the rights specifically for this reason. I believe each train was supposed to be equivalent to 35k gallons and they pumped 65-90k gallons every month or twice a month. It wasn’t until the drought got really bad and someone started to dig after the numbers didn’t match that they got caught. They paid a small fine compared to how much profit they made and how much the over pumped stolen water was worth. It’s pretty insane how much corporation’s get away with and run the country. I don’t think anything will change until things get a lot worse tbh until then it’s business as usual.
The Greed will never End on its own, it will have to be *STOPPED* . We haven't had a Government for 30 years, the domino theory has begun.

Governments always make deals with businesses first, and local people or the environment come as second.
So one way to beat this, is for locals to become partners in their own local business that can use their local resources with their local environment and people in mind.
That way their government still gets a cut, which in turn lends support to the local business initiatives.
Haha actually in india because of soclism government is giving free water to farmers with free electricity and loads of restrictions on industries.
One reason why agriculture in Iran consumes so much water is that very water intensive crops like rice and watermelons are cultivated in great quantities due to their cultural significance. This in spite of Iran being overall a dry country.

Punjab* literally means land of five rivers, but now it is facing the problem of water shortage
I am from central india and in the months of March to July we have to purchase tankers of water (7000 litter capacity) and store water it for like a month for use.
Good. Support MSP for Paddy. Encourage water intensive crops. Remove farm laws. Great Punjab. Now fight among yourself for water.
I am not saying it is the only problem (I am not from India) but burning the remnants of crops can be a cause of water depletion. Those nutrients and water held in the discarded material are then turned to smoke. Lose the water, lose the nutrients, you need more water and fertilizer for the next crop, and then people in other cities have breathing problems.

Farmers in Punjab won't stop growing water intensive crops because the get MSP from government. More price than market rates.
And these were the ones who protested against farm laws. Which would have allowed farmers to capitalise. It would have allowed some Punjabi farmers to shift from rice (water intensive crop) to others which doesn't require water. Which would have helped them. But elements which benefits from broken systems won't let systems to be fixed.
And the bad part of this debate is when you point this out to the people in Punjab even the so called literates and NRI Punjabis. They will call you 'Bhakt' or 'pro-bjp'. When the fact is that this issue was raised by scholars multiple times in past about why the state government should not provide msp, free electricity kind of luxuries, it will make Punjab from a land of fertile to a land of desert very soon.

The report states that Manila has remunicipalised water. This is NOT accurate bec water services in Metro Manila continues to be privately managed but highly regulated by government. Development of Water infrastructure requires enormous capital resources which most governments in developing markets just can’t afford. Govt, private sector
This reminded me of The Big Short. In the end credits, I believe, it stated that Michael Burry predicts that there will be a water shortage so he is focusing on investing in it. Just like he predicted the housing market collapse, he was able to predict exactly what this video is talking about.
Yup, Michael Burry is right. Water is not unlimited resource it might dry out some day in future if humans keeps on wasting the natural resources. Soon in future war between nations might start for clean water...

We ain't running out of water, we just aren't investing in desalination plants.
We could create massive passive desalination plants in Nevada or other hot baren places that wouldn't cost much to run and you can sell the salt.

At the moment in Johannesburg South Africa, we have the opposite problem. Our dams are at 108% capacity, and sluice gates are being opened daily as the rain is not letting up.
There should be way to divert them to other dry regions. The govt should think about it

Crisis occurs due to:
1. In India due to political patronage Farmers are growing water intensive crops such as rice, sugarcane compounded by need to reduce fossil fuels bill blending of ethanol
2. More infrastructure development means less open spaces.
3. Tourism: to promote more of it especially in Himalayas more roads, more vehicles more pollution, dams.
Problem will occur after 30-40 years not know
Ethonal blending has just started now. So if we already have the problem . How can that be the source.
Main problem is there agriculture is not based according to geography now. That should change.
Even textile industry uses huge amounts of water. Many other industries consumes huge amounts of water. Need to identify those and develop less water intensive processes
Hello DW, you are doing great job on documentaries... Kindly made a documentary about chennai city, always flooding on winter but drought on summer... This year we received 200cm rainfall annually but due to lack of water reservoirs all the valuable waters was diverted to ocen.. Our both central and state government doomed our wetlands and lakes.

The awareness needs to increase like 100%. We are not doing enuf for our next generation to survive with ease.
I feel we should start making recycling mandatory for communities in cities and also stop eating meat. One can survive without beef but not without rice 🍚 and wheat 🌾 ..

Hypothetically even if punjab farmers stop producing any wheat today the effect on food market would be negligible and the government will see a net gain of billions of dollars that can be invested in education and infrastructure

They had this in South Africa for a time as well. Know what they did? Informed the people on closing taps when you don't use it. Use showers, not baths and finally reusing pool water by using filters and chlorine. The problem went away in a year or so.

80 - 85% water is used for agriculture, animal farming.
Sugarcane, Cotton, Rice and meat needs huge amount of water just to produce 1 kg.
Even here in germany which is rather a good area in terms of available water, we noticed in the past seasons deminished harvests because of lack of water. Not yet fullout draughts, but it is going that way. Only way i see would be huge deselanation plants in the Nordsee. Which in itself maybe problamatic when done by more and more countries, too.

When moral values dictate that we should share any excess of wealth it's not just about sharing, it's about helping us to stay on the right track, otherwise we accumulate and accumulate only fueling our greed for even more (for sure not satisfying it), that's why those wealthiest corporations stoop to the lowest deeds, to crime, to keep up with their ever growing greed...
Low income classes spending 17% of their income on water in India is a stretch. But yes, the number is growing steadily and could get scary in few decades.

It's illegal to save rain water, in my state, which is completely dumb, but I don't think it would matter anyway because our bill is set at $98.00 a month, and that's only 3 people and only my husband showers every day, my elderly mother and I only shower every other day to every third day and we do two full loads of laundry a week

We don’t talk about how WE waste water at home. Close the tap when brushing/shaving/soaping your hands. Dry & reuse your towel a few times after taking a shower. Don’t take excessively long showers. Fix leaky faucets & taps. Not all your clothes are dirty - if you put a shirt for dinner, it’s not dirty when you get back home, it can be reused… and so on.
Massive litters of rain water vanishes without proper storage but unknown crude oil is available as per requirement !
I think the situation will become worse everyday. Privatize the water will be common in the years ahead. It is sad.

Would the removal of dams not result in faster water drainage? Dams can hold fresh water from rain to make sure it is not lost to the ocean.
Dams tend to favor higher rates of evaporation, you have artificial lakes everywhere a dam is. More surface hit by sun's heat = more evaporation. Perhaps you get more water locally but more of it ends up in the air and you leave less and less for those downstream, which are then forced to build dams.
We have to reduce food waste. Even if everyone became vegan tomorrow, what's the point when 30% or more of the production ends in the trash and causing disease? Also, we need to better manage the byproducts of our industries, like crop remnants. I avoid bottled water for the most part because I can, but a lot of people have no choice.

In India particularly in Punjab water scarcity is such a big problem but no one is talking. Even in Punjab election no one is making it an issue.
As Ethiopian orthodox I think the best way to solve this problem is to fast…. We fast for almost 6 month. Fasting means to be vegetarian for 6 month and also we eat once or twice a day and for the other 6 month we can eat anything. I think it’s sustainable and also healthy
You cannot possible have an active lifestyle while fasting. What if I want to do stuff like run and lift weights?

@@marhuny First, telling people that they are required to consume less for the greater good was a tactic used by the Soviet Union to justify the greed that the government had, no matter how out-of-touch they were. Second, I think that restaurant hamburgers are sometimes too big to eat in one sitting, since they may be 1/2 pound burgers rather than 1/4 pound.

Where do they get these facts, that's probably a number from a commercial factory that probably waste's a lot of water.
There are cattle that drink water from a underground well here where I am, so you're saying 1 of these cows drinks 100,000 liters of water is simply unmathematical.

Is cause everyone is moving to Oregon buying land and growing things like corn that causes us to go into droughts instead of using their land for something like affordable housing or multi unit housing.
....water actually has over a dozen states in just how it can freeze. Water is one of the most mysterious elements still to this day....kind of like for over a century now humanity can't figure out if viruses are living or not....and yes laws that make no sense: some states out west can't collect rain water; their "freedom"...or stubbornness is off the charts.

However insane it is making water more expensive is part of the solution in areas - how else do you control consumption? Unless you get a calculated "water credit quota" per month... that is the only way on putting the brakes on water use imo. Edit: great solutions at the end though! Definitely need to tackle this in every way we can.

In tamilnadu, we have overcome this problem by replenishing the ground water through the same borewells from which the water is drawn....Also we have a lot of ground water replenishment techniques implemented in and around Tamilnadu. Only in Chennai metro city, water mafia controls the market. But please do not blame the water scarcity on agriculture as more farmers who do crop rotation and permaculture are essential to feed the general populace.
