It was rather unusual before her time in Europe, and only became popular because of her. In Brittany, for instance, brides used to wear a full-black outfit with a white ceremonial headpiece and an orange tree branch attached to their corset. my great-grandmothers were very much Christian, and very probably virgins too, but still wore black. my grandfather wore black at his Confirmation (Catholic rite), as fashion dictated in the 1920s (it's now white only), and even in the 50s in France wearing white for one's wedding was not as widespread as it is today : my grandmother wore a simple light grey outfit in 1948 ; around that time many brides simply couldn't afford a specially-made wedding dress with frills and lace and had to do with what they could manage, as every little thing was rationed for 4 years after the end of the war. Some traditions are "made-up", they pop up one day for a trivial reason and spread quick, far and wide ; we imagine them to be old and sacred when really they are not, and give them a meaning they did not originally bear. More and more women in Europe go by the "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" "rule" because they've seen it so many times in (US-made) films and series that they somehow think it's a tradition they have to abide to. The same goes for the white dress : it's only a bicentennial custom, and does not belong to a particular tradition (except of course if it is chosen as a reference to ancient Greek, druidic or Ethiopian traditions, for example, but I don't think that's usually the case...), nor to a religion (it is not prescribed in Christiandom, simply widely chosen).

i know what you mean.. maybe she was just counting the fortunes and making sure nothing, not even the theme color of the wedding would lead their marriage to an unwary end. She's beautiful either way. I don't believe in a theme color for weddings. The most important part is the life they live afterwards.
