    Good Morning. I'm starting a dragon fruit plantation. I'm from Portugal - Europe. I found your technique of grafting with copper tubes very interesting and I started doing it. I found the ideal tubes and thought I should share it with you, to repay the knowledge you kindly shared with everyone. These tubes are made from leftover fishing rods. They are made of fiberglass with very thin walls and you can cut them in any caliber you want because they are telescopic and with a subtil cilyndrical form. Thats it. Whish you find this interesting

      Grafting is Not easy for dragon fruit. At least in climates like mine and yours... The tibe approach is apparently called peg graft. I thought I had good results until I put the plants in the field... I tried the wedge graft where you cut a triangle wedge for one bud... but this gets tricky and my success is low... Maybe in tropical climates when plants grow quickly grafting is practical but so far for me it is NOT...

    Maybe the acidity from the pine affects the ground around and under it, and oaks create a toxin to discourage foreign plants and their own babies. The shade shade keeps the ground a little more moist and that keeps the leaves and needles active at a stronger level. Just ideas. Hope this helps. Perhaps amend the top soil . Good to see your babies growing so well elsewhere. Wish I could see them live someday.

      A very good theory. I don't think the pine shade is enough to avoid producing flowers.

      I like your thinking but the plants are behaving normal just absence of flowers... I have several.more examples on the ranch including palms. For me personally it is excess shade. This just reminded me of my very esrlyvwork when I moved two 15 gallon plants under a large pepper... Same result no flower--even though no root contact...

      You know it is very hard to give advice when you do not know the environment the climate in so many different factors. Heat is very damaging, especially dry heat. Too much shade will make the plants thin also it reduces the amount of flowering so you must be very careful here the most I recommend is 30% and I honestly believe 20% is better. This will protect at 100 degrees. But much higher than 100 for any length of time is risky

    Living in Rainbow once upon a time I became a singing farmer. Still am even out here in the desert of Southern Arizona. Tedious work is my favorite . The hours disappear and I am content. Here’s a weird idea... create a reflection system that reflect the outer light on to them. Do you think supplementing a light source might help. Mirrors? Aluminum panels, grow lights ?

    The matter with shading is not just shade but how much shade they need. Shading is absolutely necessary to DF in order to avoid stress by sunlight then sunburn or further diseases. I beat for a 20%

    • @graymartin2275
      @graymartin2275  3 года назад +1

      20 % is my number too... but 20 % is hard to find... and when you put it up it feels like no shade at all!

    Hey Gray - when planting df in the ground as you have done here, what do you do to the bottom of the plastic pot that you plant in the ground? Do you cut open the plastic pot so the df can root itself deeper? How do you maintain good drainage under the plastic pot?

    • @graymartin2275
      @graymartin2275  3 года назад +1

      Correct. Cut the bottom off and the roots grow quickly into top soul. I mulch the area where the two meet so air does not dry roots...

    • @graymartin2275
      @graymartin2275  3 года назад +1

      Yes I cut the bottom and remove it. I have grown in light soils and heavy soils this way. All spoils work but the best is the loam soil. I use compost on the top to preserve moisture and prevent drying

      I noticed more this year than ever before... my son thinks it is stress... these are the first to get thinned in our program... I will look closer tomorrow to see that when they open they are more normal...

      @@graymartin2275 Interesting. Maybe the drip emitters have calcium deposited.? We go through each spigot yearly. A tedious job, but worth it. Sometimes a minuscule type of puncture- mouthed insect gets the base of our fruits and it stunts the growth, or drys them out; destroys the fruit and sometimes stunts the plant altogether ; hence the stress.

    Oh! You said planted at the same time... maybe the shade Has slowed their blooming stage! The north side would be cooler and in the winter the shade is longer too.
    Maybe the tree root systems , being wide and maybe hogging the yummies you feed DFs.
    I just thought of something I practiced as a child, I made bargains with the trees. If they control themselves I would give them special treats and attention. It worked. Call me crazy, but I have my own proof.
