I mean Kathleen can fuck right off but I think Rey killing chewie would have been such an interesting character moment, the guilt could play into her struggle to allow more friends to be hurt at the final confrontation with *the senate*
I agree that that situation should’ve held more weight. But I think I understand why they did it. Because giving into the dark side has consequences, and actually killing Chewie would haunt Rey for the rest of her life, also a thematic parallel to Kylo killing Han, her friends would fear(possibly hate her) for it, the resistance would be skeptical of her, and ultimately it would make Rey more willing to consider Palpatine’s offer. I think they didn’t do this because it would’ve led to a bittersweet ending instead of a happy optimistic one. Because ultimately Jedi should inspire hope and virtue.
Some context & explanation for those less fluent in Star Wars lore... _However,_ this explanation is based upon the old-EU (Legends), thus technically *NOT* Canon, and so should be taken with a grain of salt. ;) 1. *Force Lightning* (in-general) *~* Force Lightning is *NOT* a formally trained skill, it is a manifestation the Force-user's negative (Dark) emotions (fear, hatred, lust, rage, etc.) given form through the Dark Side of the Force; one does _NOT_ need to be Sith to wield Force Lightning. _"Technically"_ (note _"quotations")_ any Force-user (Jedi, Sith, even those un-trained but Force-active) can potentially project Force Lightning if they are strong enough in The Force (which obviously Rey is) and gives into equally strong negative (Dark) emotions. Just as any Force-user (Light &/or Dark) can Force Choke someone if the Force-user gives into their Dark Side. 2. *Force Lightning* (with training) *~* That being said, it does not mean the Force-user cannot also benefit from training. The Sith train those strong enough to use Force Lightning to be able to wield it more easily, more efficiently, and more effectively. Like how someone with a _"natural talent"_ for physical combat benefits more from martial arts training (best example(s): Ip Man and Bruce Lee); and of course, through actual field combat experience. Unfortunately, Force Lightning training generally involves (& results in) becoming a _remorseless killer._ Rather obviously, the Jedi do not teach/train Force Lightning. The counter-balance being that training Force Lightning as a skill is not limited to the Sith either; some (old-EU) examples include the Nightsisters/Witches of Dathomir, or various Dark Jedi, or the Order of Revan (who taught both Light and Dark techniques). 3. *Rey & Force Lightning ~* In this particular scene's case, Rey is feeling a maelstrom of negative (Dark) emotions: *Fear* of losing/failing Chewbacca, her *Hatred* of Kylo Ren, and *Rage* in contesting Kylo Ren over control of the transport. So because of this, Rey lashes out too _'Forcefully'_ (pun intended) in trying to "grab" the transport away from Kylo Ren, with tragic results (Chewbacca may not have been in that transport, but a whole lot of other people probably were, even if they were First Order personnel).
