page 2 of 4 of Dichotomy story ................green, on your right side. I don’t know what this means, but I’ll try to work it out!” he said. Doctor Shaw Leaves reassured Joyce and she thanked him. He was called ‘Shaw’ as a nickname as he was often sure of himself. In fact, he was almost certainly right. Was he correct in Joyce’s diagnosis and did he know the cure? Joyce could not believe what her doctor had informed her, and became distressed and frightened. Little did she know that the more she did this the stronger and longer the black branch would grow, wriggling inside her. Days and weeks and months went by and then she finally remembered what the wise hedgehog had said. She sang her favourite songs, read her Bible and prayed. Little did she know, this made her green branches grow. She made a decision to heed the advice of the large, wise hedgehog. Daily she read, sang and prayed, growing her green branches. Daily she responded in a negative way to life, with dark thoughts which made her black branches grow more and more inside her. After a year, the branches grew at equal rate and one day Joyce had a migraine. Next morning, she awoke and had what looked like antlers. There was one on the left which was black and one on the right which was green. She was horrified that the doctor did not let her know that this would happen. Did he even imagine this would take place? She found her hairdressing scissors and trimmed both of her antlers, pruned, for want of a better word. Both branches continued to grow and once a fortnight on a Wednesday the branches were trimmed and pruned. During each fortnight the branch grew rapidly to the width from her elbow to the tip of her fingernails. Each fortnight her action become like a rigmarole, a long complicated procedure. The branches grew thicker and thicker each time and more of her cranium was affected, her serotonin production was reducing and she became a victim of depression; it is a slow fade, if only she could see the pattern. Joyce learnt about healthy eating and learnt that good foods for depression are foods such as, bananas, salmon, legumes, eggs, turkey and also wholegrains. She learnt about which foods contained Tryptophan, as this makes the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is one of the neurotransmitters in the brain, and one that strongly affects a person's mood. With the help of healthy eating her defective chemistry was improving, but her black branch kept on growing day by day. Longer and longer, longer and longer. Her defective chemistry was in her brain, but her battle was in her mind. The more she cut down the branches the more they grew, especially the black one which was now growing ten centimetres longer than the green one each time and required a sharper pair of scissors to cut down.
page 3 of 4 of Dichotomy story.....Joyce was regularly bullied by her friends who were constantly calling her ‘Rudolph’ all the time. Joyce began withdrawing and this lead her deeper and deeper to the depths of her despair. She was broken and tormented and lonely. Her only company was her thoughts which never stopped, her antlers which never stopped growing and her emotions which never stopped running wild. On the verge of a nervous breakdown, she had a choice to make. This choice was to listen to the advice of the large, wise hedgehog or ignore it. She read the Bible, sang and prayed daily to develop a relationship with the creator. One day Joyce noticed it said in the Bible to renew our minds, and so as she started reading aloud Bible passages and believing them in her heart things began to change. She noticed the positive effect of this and did it more and more. She did things that made her happy, such as singing, writing, art and walking to boost her self-esteem. She also enjoyed eating two free-range eggs each day. At the next fortnightly pruning, the black branch was smaller; each week it became smaller until six months later when only one antler was visible. After another six months the black one was half the size and after another six month it had nearly disappeared. But, after another six months this black branch was strong and as strong as a metal rod in Joyce’s bone. It was persistent and attached itself to her calcium and was reluctant to move and die away. It threw a violent fit and rage whenever it was challenged. It had grown great resilience. Joyce become so accustomed to it that she started to think that it was normal for her. As long as this black branch existed she was not fully complete. Joyce realized a new truth that she was not only a human, but called to be a TREE. She was required to ground herself daily in God’s love, grace and mercy, and a metamorphosis taking place in her mind daily. Her spiritual transformation in developing the character of the Lord Jesus Christ, would take the rest of her life though, and even then it would not be completed here on earth. Meanwhile, her green branches grew other branches and she looked more like a tree; even lush, green leaves were growing on it. She could camouflage herself in the forest, nearly. She was not alone amongst her ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’, the giant oaks (with approximately 600 extant species), tall pines and firs and evergreens. She made friends with Deborah and Joanna, happy trees and followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. Deborah was a Pear tree and Joanna was a Magnolia tree. Joyce also made friends with many other trees, who were as follows: Diana - a beautiful Beech tree, Alex - a Rowan Berry tree, Faith - a Lavender tree; Rowetta - a Rose Bush tree; Milly - a Willow tree; Eleri - a Cocoa tree; Claire - a Strawberry tree, Anna - an Apple tree. Two special trees were Tracey and Martine, they were the Oak tree twins. Tracey and Martine grew into very mighty trees, both from a tiny little Acorn. Pinalia was also one of Joyce’s friends. She was once a very lonely Fir Tree before meeting her Best Friend Joyce. Joyce gave Pinalia lots of Hope and encouraged her.

page 4 of 4 of Dichotomy story :) .................. The moral of this story is that in every brain connections are made. In negative minds they look like black branches of black trees. In healthy, happy, renewed minds following the creator and the Holy Spirit and the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ; connections are made which are flourishing and they bloom and blossom, just like green branches of green trees. Our minds must choose life and be renewed daily which transforms us from the inside out. Without this transformation we will struggle to get rid of the black branches. We will grow accustomed to them and consequently they will not go without a fight. We will no longer be happy and they will not leave us alone and become abhorrent and we will ultimately hate them. It is a daily battle. The battlefield is the mind, and like it or not that is a fact. Choose Life or choose Death. (Deuteronomy 30:19) The choice is yours. Only you can make the choice. Get educated about the effects of the unrenewed thoughts which will lead you down the wrong path in life. As Francis Bacon once said “Knowledge is Power”. Pull out the mechanics of your brain which are not in your bones like Joyce’s were, but in your brain. Your thoughts become the words you speak. Best wishes in becoming like a tree, like Joyce. She will be your best friend and you can live in her forest. Finally words from Joyce, “You don’t have to live with the black branches ruining your life and body. In fact, I overcome. I am an overcomer. I became an Olive tree. I am a tree that is full of peace. I WILL help you to become like me, if you come to visit me in the forest. I will help you prepare a plot of land to bury your roots in, your firm foundation with rich, brown compost. You can be any type of tree. You can even paint a type of tree you wish to be. You can be any shape, any size, any colour. You can be green, blue, orange, purple, pink, aqua or turquoise whatever colour you want.” Bibliography: - this story is inspired by “Who Switched Off My Brain”- a book by Dr Caroline Leaf .
