Dude. Riga is a wonderful city but NEVER drink the water unless in a bottle. The digestive systems of many UK and US travelers can't handle it. US water can be hard on Latvians too so it's not bottled. P.S. Latvians consider themselves "Northern Europeans" rather than "Eastern Europeans" and that they were not a soviet republic, but rather, "occupied" by the soviets. It matters to them.
*Hey! A couple of people have rightly commented that Latvia is in Northern or Central Europe and not Eastern as I say in the video.* I wrongly rushed the VO and my language possibly misrepresents the countries I mention in it. I edited this with UK viewers in mind, and I guess I said Eastern Europe simply because it is literally to the east of the UK; and in reference to its culture and history on that side of the continent - but clearly that is a very broad generalisation and admittedly not the best. It's an odd one because even international bodies like the UN classifies the Baltic's in multiple ways - geographically it is counted as part of Northern Europe, but in terms of UN regional voting blocs it is part of the Eastern European Group. Some think Latvia should be part of the Nordics and some say central Europe - but that's what makes it great I think, that huge mix of different cultural influences that make it unique and hard to categorise!
Geographically Latvia lies in the northern and eastern halves of Europe -- but only just, because it's in the bottom left-hand corner (i.e. far southwest) of that northeastern quadrant. Which means that the most accurate thing to say would be that the country is located in *central* Europe -- in fact the geographical midpoint of Europe is (according to Guinness World Records) in next-door Lithuania, and the border with that country is no more than 75 km from Rīga.
Yeah, I visited some of those countries and people are very touchy about the label "Eastern Europe" because of the negative connotation it carries. For example, Czech Republic and Hungary prefer to be called Central Europe, and calling them Eastern will land you in a bar fight. :P
*Hi all! Thanks for taking the time to watch!* On this trip I wanted to develop a vlogging style for my future travels that was a mix of interesting information and personal opinions, instead of all 'me, me, me' and loud electronic music as is seen so much on RUclips. Despite being so sick whilst we were in Riga I'm fairly happy with how it turned out, but as always please let me know your thoughts!
Awesome! I loved Riga when I was there. Went into a 13th century underground place turned into a restaurant. Christmas village was filled with beautiful song and happy people even though it was very cold. I hope to return in warm weather soon! It was magic.. Regards!
Oh that stinks that you guys got sick I'm so sorry to hear that I know this is a two-year-old video but I'm so happy I came across it and that you uploaded it
This seems to be such a charming place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job!
I am from the UK and I go to Latvia every year cuz my mum is from there and we see our family there. You should go to Jūrmala in the summer it is so good.
I really liked your video. I m travel vlogger myself and i recently visited Riga and i had some beautiful time there.I hope u also enjoyed your trip to Riga. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing this because I have a content creator from there that I watch and I couldn't find it on the map and I was very curious to see where this beautiful place he shows is and I came across your video so thank you for uploading
Cool video! If you want to visit a stunning medieval old town come to Tallinn Estonia. Summer months are the best time to visit, because of almost 20 hours of daylight!
Yes Tallinn looks amazing! We did consider extending this trip to do Tallinn as well but didn't have the time unfortunately - will definitely have to visit in the future :) That long daylight sounds awesome!
Okay now after watching my friend who creates content from there and watching your video from there I definitely have to put this on my bucket list for a place to visit it is absolutely beautiful the architecture is beautiful but the forests are amazing I wonder what they're indigenous Wildlife is like they're going to have to look that up

So what do you think? I’m super curious but I don’t know anyone from there... thank you. :)
Nice video. The best time to visit though is summer, autumn (when Sigulda is a rainbow 🌈), spring (when the nature is blooming) or proper winter (that means with snow) 😁. a Latvian girl 🇱🇻
@@jamieroundtheworld Midsummer festival or Jāņi is the best, would be great if you could come that time and celebrate it in the countryside with locals. In summer beach is a must (try Jūrmala resort). Many nice beaches, lakes and rivers in Latvia.

Places that yall have to visit in Riga. - St Peter's Church Tower - National Art Museum - Medical Museum - Old Apartments Museum - Science Academy Museum - Holocaust Museum 😅
@@ggesalaten7066 Well, I'm looking physically at the map of Europe at the very moment and I can cleary see that the Baltic states are in the Northern Europe. Would you say Denmark isn't in Northern Europe, but instead in Central Europe?
@@armands3153 No i wouldnt, Denmark is nordic Its not only geographical, but also historic, the baltic states has more history in eastern and middle europe, i can accept Estonia as a nordic country as it has had many relationships with finland, sweden and denmark, but not the others
@@ggesalaten7066 Well, if we are bringing in history, then the differences between the Baltic states and the general Eastern Europe are even more apparent. As nations/tribes they have no connection with the Slavic nations. Being under the rule of Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Russia (and the big union between Lithuania and Poland), there definitely are some traits or lifestyles being transferred over, but mentality wise the Baltic people are more closer to the Finns than Slavs - being more reserved, direct.
Very nice video, can't understand at all how it only has so few views a year after being released, all these people are missing the really good stuff, it seems! Just wanting to put out that all of these countries you mentioned in the end (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia and the whole Baltic region) are *NOT* located in the *EASTERN* european region, neither geographically nor culturally nor historically, but they're part of the bigger *CENTRAL* european region, they're also referred to as *east-middle-european*. I know, since the times of the Warsaw Pact and the Cold War, the perspective of europe has changed a little bit in the minds of the population in the West, but please take into consideration that Europe ends at the Ural mountains and not at the eastern end of the EU. Just a friendly reminder, the people in this region and especially Poland can get really mad at you if you call them "eastern Europeans", so please try at least not to tell them that. Greetings from Gdynia!:)
Thanks a lot, this is a really important point 👍 I rushed the VO when finishing it and my language misrepresents the opposite of what I was trying to get across: that countries like I mentioned are just as great as the more popular destinations for UK tourists like Spain/France/Italy/Portugal/etc.
The video has some nice visuals but, no offence, I wish I had seen more of Riga/Latvia and less of monologues. And Latvia has been declared to be part of the UN Northern European Group since 2002.
To be fair, for Western Europeans it is eastern, at least culturally and this is not a diss! We just did a big tour in all ex-Soviet countries last summer and they're great, so beautiful, vibrant and full of interesting history that is very different from Western Europe (or Nordic countries that I see as Northern Europe proper).
Thanks, I already have addressed this in several other comments - this was my bad when recording the VO. Whilst it is classified as Eastern Europe by UN regional voting blocs, I would agree that it is geographically Northern Europe and would change the VO now if I could.
