- A key design goal of light/lightweight fighter design is to satisfy standard air-to-air fighter effectiveness requirements at minimum cost. These criteria, in order of importance, are the ability to benefit from the element of surprise, to have numerical superiority in the air, to have superior maneuverability, and to possess adequate weapon systems effectiveness. Light fighters typically achieve a surprise advantage over larger aircraft due to smaller visual and radar signatures, which is important since, in the majority of air-to-air kills, the element of surprise is dominant. Their comparative lower cost and higher reliability also allow for greater numbers per budget. Finally, while a single-engine light fighter would typically only carry about half the weapons load of a heavy twin-engine fighter, its surprise and maneuverability advantages often allow it to gain a positional advantage to make better use of those weapons.
A requirement for low cost and therefore small fighters first arose in the period between World War I and World War II. Examples include several RAF interceptor designs from the interwar era and French "Jockey" aircraft of the immediate pre-World War II. None of these very light fighters enjoyed success in World War II, as they were too hampered in performance. Similar to the meaning of lightweight fighter.

@Virender Singh that's not fault, Tejas simple AI was design for not using It's full thrust of the Engine because It's increase stability and less vibration. It’s also give engine a longer life. Also Indian airforce have no plan to use Tejas as Interceptor fighter.

MiG 21 is way old generation fighter to be counted in list even one has to omit F16.... Gripen which was offered to India were equipped with GE engines with US supplied avionics... Don't know how many Chinese aircrafts really worth to be counted in such lists since much of Chinese technology is either reverse engineered or clumsy copied versions and have never proven it's metal.. ...
I don't see the Grippen as a light fighter. It is an advanced gen 4.5 mach 2 multi role fighter.

HAL Tejas has a body frame inspired from French Mirage 2000, weapons and avionics inspired from Migs and Sukhois, and engine from US GE F series and finally designed and engineered by the Indians (Bharatiyas).

Brazil has already received its first Gripen E, I went to the Gavião Pixoto base in São Paulo to see it in action. The fighter surprised me, as I had already seen the F-16 and I compared it to be much better and much more advanced! Not only is advertising really the best in its category!

In todays world, for small nations, speed is not essential but stealth is, what we need is an aircaft priced under $10mill, running costs of under$2 grand, range of 1000km , cabable of carrying 2thou kg of weapons load, with modern avionics, so the pilots can upgrade if required, prop aircraft are maybe coming back into there own
