I bought a Brompton Electric after watching your previous video and it's really helped this year. I've driven trains all the way through the lockdowns and my commute to work is a hilly 10k. Having the bike with me means I can get home after a shift without much effort even when there's no public transport running. I've got a car and non electric bikes but cycling gives me time to mentally unwind and the electric means I'm not walking in the house at 3am sweating and wide awake when I have to get to sleep because I'm at work 12 hours later.
Just bought one for my Wife and ordered a basic Brompton for me, can't wait to take them away and use them on our Holidays in the UK and fingers crossed abroad soon. Keep up the good work.
You could always upgrade your old Brompton with a Swytch kit. Then you needn't argue with Nathan as to who gets the electric when you are out together. I have electrified my 20 year old Brompton with a Swytch kit and I'm very impressed with the result. I use it a lot more now, as a replacement for local car journeys. It would be a very interesting comparison you could make between the official Brompton Electric and the Swytch Brompton.
the biggest difference between the kits and the official brompton electric that people arent mentioning is the pressure sensor bottom bracket. Pressure sensor on an e bike is a much better riding experience, much more natural. The swytch and other kits are
Hi, I'm speaking to you from Campinas, Brazil. I also a folding bike too. I would like to buy a Brompton but I don't have money to buy it. Many times I prefer riding a bike than driving my car. Your Brompton is beautiful.
Yeah, it’s been a funny old year for changes. I originally ordered a Swytch kit for my Brompton (it’ll arrive one day!) so I could commute and leave the car at home a couple of days a week. Now I’m working from home full time and don’t really need the car anymore. I’m using the Brompton for local trips and hopefully when the kit arrives I’ll use it for longer trips round Bristol. Everywhere is down hill from home, so I could do with the help! Thanks for the video and I’m looking forward to the upgrade vid.
Bristol does have some hills. I'm up hill all the way home from the centre. It was a good work out when I was commuting but sometimes I just need transport not a work out so that's why having an ebike as an option is so great now. It would be great to hear how you get on with the Swytch kit, you'll likely get yours before I get one!
Love the descriptions of the changes and how they influenced you, and you adapted each time. Very "real world" and easy to relate to. Stay well, and keep cycling.
I've had nearly 50 years in the sadle, the last year and a bit has featured ebikes both bought and built by myself. From the moment I rode the electric I was hooked, the hills here in Yorkshire disappeared seemingly lol. I love motorbikes too but that's quite different story.
Lovely to see you back! So glad you and Nathan have got the home you want, and looks like a very exciting future for you both. Well done with the driving test- my American friends have said how they can’t get over how fast we drive over here on our small roads ! I’ve been putting off the idea of an e-bike due to ego reasons but after a long spell of illness has left me in no shadow of a doubt I’m getting on a bit, the eBrompton looks very interesting indeed! Take care, happy Christmas to you and yours!🎄
Thanks it's good to be back. 😀 Don't let the naysayers get to you. The first time I rode an e-bike was about 2/3 of the way across Canada when we were camping behind a bike shop. I was amazed at it, it was soooo much fun I couldn't stop smiling, and that's saying a lot because I'd just found out my cat had died. They are so much fun and you still get the benefits of moving your body and getting your heart rate up, it's just more fun. Some of them are even hard to tell they are e-bikes at first glance, they are getting very stealthy and as battery tech gets better they will become hard to tell apart.
I kind of had the opposite experience where I was driving a Smart for a few years (albeit the electric one which is awesome to be clear) but I got rid of it to cycle everywhere again. I haven’t really had the full car-free experience yet because I haven’t had to go anywhere outside a 5 mile radius since March. But I definitely don’t miss driving at all so far, and that surprised me. I took voluntary redundancy when my job wanted me to come back before the furlough was ending and I knew covid was going to get much worse again. And then the scheme was extended just after that. Fortunately I can live on my savings for a while though so I feel fortunate for that, and it’s definitely nice not feeling like I’m dragging around a ball and chain in the form of a car and all the associated costs.
Hi Chirs! I've wonderd with the Smart electric is like. I have a feeling it might be quicker off the start. I didn't miss driving (Or the stress of owning a car) when I moved to the UK. I remember after a couple years having a bit of an a-ha moment walking somewhere looking at everyone in traffic and got a bit angry about the lie we've all been sold about the freedome of cars and how our cities, lives and countries have bent over backwards buidling for them. Glad to hear you are hanging in there with the covid situation. Everyone seems to be experincing it in very different ways.
@@OneLessCar The Smart EQ (electric) is better in every way. It accelerates faster, it’s smooth, it doesn’t vibrate, it’s silent, there’s instant throttle response (I drove a petrol one when my car was serviced and they’re dangerous at roundabouts and junctions. So slow to respond.) You can charge it at home easily if you have a driveway. I don’t know if Pure Electric have charging points at their office but I imagine they would be the type of company to do it now or very soon, just in case you needed a top up. The short-ish range is the only real negative. But when you’re used to riding an e-Brompton, the car range will seem like quite a lot. And these days there are so many chargers it’s basically no big deal. When I got my first EV in 2016 it was a doable challenge. Now they’re everywhere.
I am 57 and use my Brompton every day for short and longer journeys up to 50 miles without any problems. April 2022 my wife and I are cycling on our Brompton's from the UK to Azerbaijan. I am just itching to get away.
I have "every" kind of bikes: gravel, road, mtb, monospeed, cargo... but a Brompton is my dream, can't wait to get one and make a video about it on my channel. Good Video! 🙌
My Brompton is my absolute favourite go-to bike. Pure pedal power for mine, so I am slower than many, but it is the bike in my garage that I enjoy the most and does so many things well that I hardly ever ride my other ones now. Have done over 5,000 miles on my M6L in 2020, so it has certainly been used and consequently represents good value for money too👍🙂
My manual Brompton is my favourite possession without a doubt. Nothing else comes close. Will invest in the electric option when I really need the extra power.
I'm looking forward to get my first foldable bike. Definitly gonna be a Brompton. I have a remote-friendly work, but I need sometimes to go to the place for reasons. I just moved 40km from work, to get a bigger house for less money and also more green around! But now I have to make 4 kilometers with somes littles hills (I have some computer and somewath-heavy stuff to move os yeah little hills can become big in mind lol), plus the train to take, and then some little kilometers to reach work. Well I didn't think before I would need an electric one, but, eh, seems to be good. As you sya, it's important to note change in our life hehe
Michelle as always do great presentations and it is really enjoyable listen her voice! Okay we get older to but is still fun beat your yesterday :) whatever you do it on an E-bike or not. E-bike is perfect for commuting and you not need smell sweet at work. I wish you Michelle and Nathan a very Good New Year!
Thanks for your video! I'm very interested in the Brompton so I have been watching a lot of RUclipss; one side effect is that it's making me want to visit your country again! I enjoy the views from the bikes :) Those lorries look pretty scary though. In Boston we have our own crazy, aggressive drivers, but it's not quite the same situation with trucks on the narrow roads.
I've always thought e-bikes were great, as you can see in my other e-bike videos ruclips.net/video/E2nUQGIlEQc/видео.html :) I just didn't think I needed a Brompton that was electric 😀
My ambition is to get a Brompton Electric by the spring. The fact that parts for the bike will be available for years to come which is great plus as well as supreme foldability. Love your videos, Michelle, and hope you produce many more in 2021!
I hope springs comes quickly for you 😀 You're right about being able to replace parts for many years after purchasing making it a good investment if looked after and better for the environment. Hopefully there will be more riding in 2021 to share!
Great to see you back Michelle, glad to hear that the Brompton is getting a good run out. Congratulations on the driving and hope you have a great Christmas 🚴
Good to be back. Hopefully more to come over the next few months. I don't dare plan out more than 4 weeks in advance at the moment though the rules around here change everday it seems.
Question. When buying the electric, is there much benefit to getting 6 gears instead of 2? And are the 6 gears via 2 on a derailleur and a 3 speed SA, or is it a 6 speed SA? I cant work it out from the Brompton website. Thanks.
The six speed set up is 2 gear levers one to control 3 internal hub gears and one to control 2 external ones (also on the back). I find I almost exclisvely use just the 3 internal gears as there is little in the difference of the 2 external ones. The one advantage of the six speed that was brought to my attention recently was that it gives you more options should you run out of battery our if you want to occasionally use the bike without the assist. The 2 speed is lighter and cheaper though so if you don't have to worry about hills than it's a pretty safe bet.
@@Joe-lb8qn They don't do a 3 speed electric. The hub on the 3 speed non electric is not as wide a range as on the electric version. The derailleur on the 6 speed allows for in-between gears as well as an extra top and bottom gear. The derailleur on the Bromton is much the same as the chain tensioner that they all have anyway. The only difference is that the jockey wheels can float and there is a chain pusher.
Nice insight into how you use the Brompton. We were looking at doing train, city visit trips this year and did look at the Brompton. Might still be an option in the future. Best wishes to Nathan and yourself for the new year 👍
Might be worth seeing if there is a rental locker near where you are. A great way to try before you buy. It was how I expeperenced my first Brompton. Happy Holidays to you both!
Enjoyed your video. I have a lovely titanium gravel/road bike that I throughly enjoy riding, but my commute to my foundry is done on my Brompton. I really enjoy that too. I have a Swytch electric kit for the Brompton due to be delivered over the next few days. I'm in a quandary, do I sell the kit on or not? I'm feeling quite fit at the moment, but I'm 58 next birthday 😊 Looking forward to seeing what upgrades you've done on yours. Happy Christmas.
That's really interesting about the Swytch. I'm hoping to be able to try converting our other Brompton with a Swytch kit via work :) I know the fist generation weren't very reliable (from my LBS that stopped selling them for this reason). It would be great to compare the 2 options. Some times it's the other transport options you have or the facilities at work that make an option obvious. Sometimes it's nice just to have options! So many bikes and roads to ride and so litttle time! Always the problem
I have heard of it, I don't think you can escape their ads here on RUclips 😂 My local bike shop used to sell them but he stopped due to reliabilty issues, not ideal. I'm hoping to try the new genearation out this year so stay tuned.
I have recently upgraded my Brompton with a Swytch kit and, so far, so good as far as reliability is concerned. There is a 12 month warranty but Swytch are supposed to give lifetime support for the kit, though I haven't had to use this yet.
Thank you for this great video. I am now considering a Brompton. How does the Brompton Electric Bike fair as a bike on its own? Been thinking of getting it to have the electric as an added option, but also wanted to use it as a standard bike from time to time.
It's good to have those extra gears in hilly areas! Also good to have them if you want to use the bike with out the battery (either when by accident or on purpose!) 😀
Hi, Single owner Brompton owner, I would like purchase a second brompton an electric. So my partner can cycle as well. Maybe get a child trailer for out little one. At twice the price of a standard m3L or m6L, do you think Brompton will drop the price of the electric next year? What range do you get on moderate hills? We live in a valley. My partner is similar build to you. I'm 83kg. PS I follow the pure electric videos as well. Your doing good work there. Very informative. I have a m365 pro halfords edition as well. I find it great for a 4km short run to the supermarket with a backpack for the shopping. For longer runs to further away supermarket and other retail. its the brommie and the basket bag. I find the m365 gets tiring on longer runs, the constant bumps with no suspension and getting cold from standing.
I don't think the price will drop any time soon. The battery is about £500 of the cost so batteries getting cheaper will help. The government subsidies that I've heard whispers about could help though, and the money is better spent than subsidising electric cars (IMHO). The real problem over the next year will be having enough supply as there are supply chain issues in the cycling industry at the moment. Range wise I get more than what they state (the range given by Brompton is 30 - 70km) on flat rides and I get over the low end of what Brompton quotes on hillier rides. I should have access to a new soon so hopefully, I can do a range test with that. My battery is 2 years old now so it doesn't likely have it's full capacity anymore. Interesting to hear how you use your e-scooter. It's great to have options! I think you are right about long rides, they are tiring on those little wheels and standing is a bit boring too (and cold as you said in winter!), I think I will always prefer bikes for that reason :)
@@OneLessCar Thanks for your detailed response. Hopefully the price of the electric Brompton will drop a little as battery technology gets better and cheaper. I hope the brexit wont increase the Price's of Brompton. We will see. Brompton is definitely more fun than the scooter. I prefer it. The scooter is great for when I'm feeling lazy. I think the most efficient electric transport mode is the bike, scooter 2nd and electric car last for 10 to 15 k commuting distance s. I would like to get an electric car eventually for the 77k journey to work. Happy new year to you and your family.
Hi - just wondering whether you guys see a need for bike insurance for the electric? I have owned a standard brompton for many many years now and never had the need for insurance but i'll be getting an electric for my mrs. and so was wondering whether insurance would be good due to possible electrical failures? Probably would be wise for the £3k price tag!
I'm not sure what kind of insurance you would get for that. If it's new the warranty would cover defaults. Other than that I'd make sure it's at least covered by your contents insurance for theft. I suspect you might be a little jealous of her motor assist. Nathan borrows mine all the time. 😁
It's hard for me to say as I've ridden the Tern GSD but it's a cargo bike and has much fatter tires. It's a completely different ride. The Brompton can go fast if you push. On the standard non electric one I had someone try to draft me on a bike path and he commented how hard I was to keep up with even though my bike was so little 😀
My system will continue in 2021 as it has in 2020 whenever you post. Go to you tube each day, check for ride on cycling (or pure electric if your presenting), click on the video, when it appears click on the like button, set back and enjoy another great video. Happy New Year!!
I've had a few rides on some cargo bikes for work, they are great workhorses I think the TERN is the only one I could currently fit in the house 😀 due to the ability to stand on its end. Any particular ones you have your eyes on?
Merry Christmas! Love the follow up feedback on the Brompton Electric. I find my M6L sufficient even for hilly situations. BUT, the Electric must be AMAZING against those 50km headwinds I face occasionally. I will buy a Brompton Electric when I'm closer to retirement to extend my pleasure riding. Who usually wins the Electric battle? 🤭
The 6 speed is great, and it's good to know you plan on cycling for many many more years! It's been 50/50 😀 but the agreement is the person on the electric has to keep it in eco mode 😊
Good idea. It's a pretty chaotic set up at the moment, There's 2 road bikes, 2 touring bikes, 2 Bromptons, 2 e-MTBs, and 2 e-scooters, it's a bit like Noah's ark for 2 wheels. Once I get some decent lighting and calm down I'll do a little tour in the story tab 😀
Still great, nothing noticable in regards to loss of raneg, but I don't have a consistant ride that I do regularly to really measure. I'll get the battery health checked next time I'm at the bike shop. Also since working at Pure Electric I've learned how to better look after the battery so hopefully I'll have it for a while with good range :)
At least with an engine, a Brompton is a less horrible bike (I own a 2019 SuperlightM6LXBrompton, modified down to 9,35 kilo, with mudguards, as a Dane) But the small wheels gives much more rolling resistance during use, and even if it may do what other bikes do, it is with a lot more effort than an ordinary bike! Its fold is the only excuse. Finn. Denmark
I'm hoping to get the chance to try it out this year. The first generation of them I've heard was unreliable so I'm waiting to hear what the new one that just came out is like. Also hoping Pure Electric will carry it so I can try it out via work. 🤞😊
A very well presented video however may I make a polite, constructive comment ? IMHO you are tendering to talk a tad too fast in some segments. and a more measured delivery would add to the overall presentation. I hope that this helps. Merry Christmas
Hi David, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. I naturally talk very quickly and here on RUclips that actually can be a good thing as it helps with retention (believe it or not a lot of people watch videos sped up). For the work videos I do tend to speak slower so it's something I'll be keeping and eye on going forward to see what works better 😀
Why dont she wear a helmet ? she is not showing a good example to other cyclist who watch her video's. Some car drivers are just crazy they may have the whole road yet some still insist on overtaking much too close to cyclist the worst offenders are lorry drivers. a cyclist head is as delicate as an egg you have to protect it with a helmet.

"More time on the bike"....I feel the same way on my motorcycles/scooters, nothing weird about that...😉😁
Merry Christmas. Looking forward to next years adventures.
Happy holidays to you too! I'm hoping there will be a few good ones to make up for this year!
Have u guys ever heard of swytch electric conversion kit for the brompton? If yes, have you consider them for future upgrade?
I have heard of it, I don't think you can escape their ads here on RUclips 😂 My local bike shop used to sell them but he stopped due to reliabilty issues, not ideal. I'm hoping to try the new genearation out this year so stay tuned.
I have recently upgraded my Brompton with a Swytch kit and, so far, so good as far as reliability is concerned. There is a 12 month warranty but Swytch are supposed to give lifetime support for the kit, though I haven't had to use this yet.
Hi with the electric Brompton, what speed do you use ? Is it good for hills ?
I'm usually in level 2 assist. It's great on hills!
@ is yours a 4 speed one?
Thank you for this great video. I am now considering a Brompton. How does the Brompton Electric Bike fair as a bike on its own? Been thinking of getting it to have the electric as an added option, but also wanted to use it as a standard bike from time to time.
It's great on it's own. Rides just like the normal Brompton with a touch of extra weight on the front wheel.
Yeah, it's going to be a Brompton 6 electric for me here in the foothills of Sacramento, CA USA
It's good to have those extra gears in hilly areas! Also good to have them if you want to use the bike with out the battery (either when by accident or on purpose!) 😀
Hi,
Single owner Brompton owner, I would like purchase a second brompton an electric.
Hi. Greetings from Argentina. How do you compare in terms of confort an effort the Bromton witj a 20 inch foldable bike such as Tern or Dahon?
It's hard for me to say as I've ridden the Tern GSD but it's a cargo bike and has much fatter tires. It's a completely different ride. The Brompton can go fast if you push. On the standard non electric one I had someone try to draft me on a bike path and he commented how hard I was to keep up with even though my bike was so little 😀
My system will continue in 2021 as it has in 2020 whenever you post. Go to you tube each day, check for ride on cycling (or pure electric if your presenting), click on the video, when it appears click on the like button, set back and enjoy another great video. Happy New Year!!
A great routine! 😀 Happy New Year!
We still love you! I love my ebike. I commute 24 miles RT. I'm thinking about getting a Cargo bike next.
I've had a few rides on some cargo bikes for work, they are great workhorses I think the TERN is the only one I could currently fit in the house 😀 due to the ability to stand on its end. Any particular ones you have your eyes on?
Is the Brompton electric not heavy in terms of folding, and holding on public transport?
Thank you.
Thanks!
Great video. When will see the new bike room since your move.
After years of using it, how is the battery?
Finn. Denmark
Enjoy and keep safe!!! xx
THank you Sheila! Hope you've had a relaxing break and are looking forward to 2021 💫
@@OneLessCar We are !! Let's hope we get rid of the mask's in 2021 Keep Safe ! xx
Brompton is one of my dream bikes, hopefully one day I have.
thanks for sharing 💪🏻
🍀🍀 hopefully that day comes soon. 😀
You were not wrong - your needs changed and the value perception of what the eBrompton provides has changed to your new situation.
Sweet ...no helmet laws ,like here in Canada.....😃
Yep change. Lost my job, got a better one, swapped the LEAF for a Tesla, moved from Stroud to Scotland.
That's a LOT of change. Congrats on the new job, and car, and hopefully you are enjoying Scotland!
Why not save the fights and convert your other Brompton with a Swytch electric wheel kit?
I'm hoping to get the chance to try it out this year. The first generation of them I've heard was unreliable so I'm waiting to hear what the new one that just came out is like. Also hoping Pure Electric will carry it so I can try it out via work. 🤞😊
Hoping for more videos riding the bike
A very well presented video however may I make a polite, constructive comment ? IMHO you are tendering to talk a tad too fast in some segments. and a more measured delivery would add to the overall presentation.
I hope that this helps. Merry Christmas
Hi David, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. I naturally talk very quickly and here on RUclips that actually can be a good thing as it helps with retention (believe it or not a lot of people watch videos sped up). For the work videos I do tend to speak slower so it's something I'll be keeping and eye on going forward to see what works better 😀
TEDDY!!!
👍
Ide love to be behind you 😱
For that price I rather buy a hummingbird, no question asked
They are lovely bikes. They are also 2 grand more.
Spoke about Brompton 20%. Spoke about your life 80%. Rename your title. Thumbs down 😊
in your age understand why its better electric bike
3 k ??? We use miles in England. Nothing insults an old Englishman than foreigners not using imperial measurements.
Cyclist particularly those that do any form of competitive cycling tend to use metric as the courses are measured out in km.
get a towe tow rope
Why dont she wear a helmet ? she is not showing a good example to other cyclist who watch her video's. Some car drivers are just crazy they may have the whole road yet some still insist on overtaking much too close to cyclist the worst offenders are lorry drivers. a cyclist head is as delicate as an egg you have to protect it with a helmet.
