I do meditation few times, and at one time i got very clarity mind. My eyes are so focus and i can see little things very clearly. Amazing zen menditation! 👍🏻.
This video really worked for me. I now do zazen first thing in the morning for 20-45 minutes, depending on the day, and Zazen has now become a daily habit. Thank you, Brad. My goal is to add a second session later in the day but I’m not there yet.
I practiced daily meditation for about 10 years but got demotivated after being in the culture of the meditation group I was with. Now, I meditate only sometimes, but this video is helping to motivate me once again to take it up as a daily practice in the Zen tradition.
Human beings tend to make everything complicated when it doesn't have to be. I know that's my stumbling block to sitting. However, this talk is inspirational especially with your laid back demeanour. Sweet!
Only just discovered this guy, love his straight forward, no bs explanation. Just do it. If you're going to wait for a perfect time to sit zazen, (or wait for that injury to heal), you'll never start sitting..... Just do it.
This is pretty much the advice I give other people when they ask me about zazen. In a way, it's like writing: people who are serious about it will do it anyway; people who need to be constantly goaded into it probably aren't going to do it. But the people who get into the habit and see the benefits (as you noted) tend to stick with it, because the benefits become self-evident.
Motivation might fell & disappear with time. So memory. Many patients with ADHD require new encouragement. Some times zen monastery is enough, some times being not alone, some times youtube can sparkle the light again.
For me making habits is the hardest thing, but as an overly anxious person who truly felt benefits from the first time meditating, theres no way I can have a normal day without it
@@CaridadeCaio Oops! Sorry! I know that word because many Japanese people know it since it sounds like "arigato." I didn't know the spelling, so I used Google Translate. It must be programmed by a woman!
Thanks Brad. The Nishijima Roshi How to do Zazen was very inspiring when I saw it some years ago. He's so straightforward and gentle, and he's done this so many times that the words are unnecessary. Just watching him take off his socks is totally cool.
This is like the beginning of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. You are exactly correct though, you just have to make it a point to get up and do it. I do 30 minutes every morning and my teacher would like me to do another 30 minutes later in the day. Thanks.
Oh thanks, this is really helpful for me. How do you bring in other Zen aspects into your life in addition to the meditation? I have this weird experience of attaining enlightenment when I don’t seek it, and then losing enlightenment. Realizing it was always there, and then it was never there at all.
What I do is not really zazen, though it is breath meditation, and I do seem to derive benefit from it, but you are spot on when you say "just do it", and if you get pulled away, just start again. Of course, being "religious" (that's what people say I am, but I really don't think its true), as a 12er Shi'i Muslim, I make daily Salat as well as the breath meditation. I really don't feel like getting up some mornings, but I do it. Not doing either, even for just a day, brings all that noise you talk about "which for me amounts to anxiety about life". I do want to learn more about how your lineage does zazen, though I was pleasantly surprised when the breath meditation I do actually seemed to have an effect on lessening my anxiety. Thanks again.

Zazen is just like taking a dump. Consistency is crucial! I've internalized Suzuki Roshi's words a long time ago for when "I don't feel like it"... Allow your discouragement to become your encouragement. I agree. Once you give up on Zazen the anxiety starts to rumble again for me. I do it everyday day now without fail 30 minutes to an hour. When I’m rushed or short on time a try to get at least a 13 to 15 minute sitting.
I think the hardest part of practice is doing zazen twice a day, routinely. Sounds stupid, but it's a bit like banging head against brick wall with little progress. And boring too sometimes. Even after a decade of practice.
You might mix up your practice with additional options. It then enhances your desire to meditate. I have found there usually is about 10 minute period before your meditation comes to a 'boil'. Are you in a monastery?
Why do you sit Zazen? I started in 2003 with a few years break a couple of times. But I haven't a clue why I sit? Always has baffled me if I ask why. To be calm? No. To attain enlightenment? What about reading a bit or doing yoga before meditation? And when meditating in this style , what do you actually do? Focus on breathing? Really just sitting or where to put the mind? Let it fleet throughout thoughts? Best :)
In his book (the Dragon one) Nishijima Roshi writes he usually recommends 2 x 45 min daily sittings and I remember you talking about 2 x 30 mins in one of your books. This makes me wonder what the differences might be. Obviously an hour is easier to dedicate for zazen than 90 mins but personally I'm in a situation where it doesn't make that big a difference, so I wonder if I should strive for longer sittings or settle for the daily hour. What is your view on this?
Who was it that said:"There is no enlightenment and nobody to be enlightened"? I have been looking at various teachings such as Advaita Vedanta and Kashmir Shaivism. But I need a solid meditation technique. Ramana Maharshi's Self Enquiry is too vague for me and the Neti Neti meditation where you just focus on 'I am' and refuse any qualifiers such as 'I am a women/man', 'I am an American' and even 'I am a human being' is also too vague. Kashmir Shaivism has too many completely unpronounceable mantras for Westerners. I have been interested in Zen on and off. What put me off Zen was the emphasis upon the mind. Vedanta believes that the mind/ego is the problem, and has to be bypassed whereas Zen wants to work with the mind/ego to build a better more stable ego. Vedanta teaches that if you look for your mind you will not find it as it does not exist. The mind only seems to exist because you identify with the thoughts, emotions, feelings running through your awareness. Something happened to me 6 years ago that made me realise that the mind was my worst enemy. My mind for a period of several weeks was urging me to commit suicide and I was getting 40 - 90 minutes sleep per night as my mind wouldn't switch off. I survived this very unpleasant period by saying to myself :'I'll commit suicide, but NOT today.' I've become interested in Zen again because I read a book about 'The Unborn' the teachings of Bankei-zenji. Bankei's teaching 'The Unborn' really appeals to me. The following is Bankei's most famous quote: "Don't hate the arising of thoughts or stop the thoughts that do arise. Simply realise that our original mind, right from the start, is beyond thought, so that no matter what, you never get involved with thoughts. Sri Ramana Maharshi was once asked 'what is the difference between the mind and the Self(Brahman)?' He replied, "there is no difference, only the Self(Brahman) can exist without the mind' while the mind cannot exist without the Self."
I think the thing for me is that if it's just not working out sometimes then I'll stop. If that was only ten minutes of mediation then okay, that's okay.
