I was born, raised and bred in West Central Fla. I'm in my 70's now and my elementary school (6th grade) graduation trip was to Silver Springs. I remembered it vividly. The glass bottom boats, the ride down river with monkeys perched in the trees. Also came the story of Llyod Bridges and Sea Hunt. Ross Allen had a sideshow there as well. The whole class had a swell time, and a good time was had by all. Thanks for the memories that this film had brought me, and for posting it to this channel.

I can relate. We also went to Silver Springs (6th grade elementary school ). I remember when I-75 was being built in Tampa and Busch Gardens didn’t have rides. Parents loved to go and get a glass of free beer. Lowry Park with Fairyland… So much is gone now.

I actually enjoyed those corny old roadside attractions more than I do the big theme parks. They were a testament to the creativity of those who built them. There were no long lines.

I had a great uncle owned a barber shop in.Tampa and used to cut babe ruths hair and go scuba diving in wicki wachi before it became an attraction. Every where water was like glass and even downtown tampa river had dolphins swimming and the brick streets had cable cars 5 cent....orange trees growing all over town. Paradise. I was 11 i lived on Sanabel Island Florida was beautiful then...

It’s August 2, 2024. My family and I lived in Philadelphia but my grandfather retired in 1970 and moved to Pembroke Pines in West Hollywood Florida. I was 8 at the time. He lived there until 1979 and moved back to Philadelphia because he wanted to be with family. I visited him once or twice a year with my parents and recall how fascinating Florida was. I’m 62 now and moved to Melbourne Florida two summers ago. I HATE IT! This is NOT the Florida I remember. I’m hoping I can afford to move back to the suburbs of Philadelphia for the same reasons my grandfather did; I want to live closer to my family and friends.

TALK ABOUT THE Racism that was taking place in these times.. born in 1936? how did she view blacks because in the thirties and they were very prevalent in florida since god made the earth... (alllll throughout the south and america period) and how those remains belong to the indigenous americans that "verazanno, columbus, and marco polo" saw when they arrived and said looked like Ethiopians... even though they were original Americans with dark hue in the millions.... the conquerer took it all with the help of the indigenous and made their own narrative like they do all over. bless

It was the end of an era when Disney went in. Many thought it was going to be a boon to their businesses. They changed the interstate systems to accommodate all the traffic from Disney...the latest and greatest everyone had to see...and many of these old places got put out of business. The days of the car vacation on all the old Highways to all the old attractions was all but gone at that point, or started their decline, never to recover.
