I agree with you and I always felt Mary would have been able to sing opera had he wanted to. He had a tremendous voice range. He should be rated as a top voaclist for sure.
I have to agree. The man was a beautiful singer and he had so many talents. He could pick the guitar, play the piano and also speak and sing in Spanish and spoke some Hawaiian. He was my favorite male singer.
Marty, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, George Jones, Merle haggard, Ray Price,Lorreta Lynn, Patsy cline, Kitty Wells and Willie Nelson-the last of the best-I missed afew names here.
As an islander I first listened to Island Echoes in the 1960s and never stopped loving it now that I'm back in the island.....not Hawaii..but same feeling ...of long lost love.
thank you partner as this ws a tune that bought out the best of me too as i miss my pedal over the christchurch earthquakes 2011 as its like you and have split but that will never happen as your in my mind 24/7 marty
Once more you've found the Lp and the songs I've been looking for. My poor LP is all beaten up ater so many years. Thank you for posting. Thank you so much,.Terri, Kallisann
Tom Although Jerry Byrd played the steel on Marty's 1963 album 'Hawaii's Calling Me', on his 1957 album 'Song Of The islands' the steel playing is by James Farmer who was with Marty from his early days. Marty always had first rate steel players including Bill Johnson and Katz Kubiyashi and I believe I'm right in saying that Marty was a close friend Of Little Roy Wiggins the steel player behind many of Eddy Arnold's classic songs.
The steel players mentioned were all great players in their own right. I loved them all for their styles. This James Farmer who also played on "Singing the Blues" recording by Marty.
I find it strange that most of the posters are applauding Marty. But this song is NOT about Marty. He would be the FIRST to admonish anyone that did that. This recording is about a musical instrument called the "steel Guitar" formerly called "Hawaiian Guitar". To which some say is THE most beautiful musical instrument ever invented. The artist is none other than "Little Roy Wiggins" which was the DRIVING force behind Eddy Arnold's rise to fame. He played for Eddy for 25 yrs. Yet MOST of Eddy's fans never even knew, nor cared for who played in Eddy's band that led Eddy to fame. So sad indeed. Marty LOVED the steel guitar. He loved LRW and Jerry Byrd and others who played this kind of music. And Marty also played the instrument but he did not play well enough to be on his recording. Thus he sought the best. And LRW was the choice in this recording and MANY others during Marty;s rise to fame. For whatever it's worth.
I believe the steelguitist is James Farmer who was a giant influence on me. He started play Marty before he left Arizona. Marty brought James to Nashville.
Just came across this great song by Marty Robbins. When I saw it was your 'site' I immediately subscribed! He has always been one of my favorites along with Hank Snow, Slim Whitmnan, and a lot of the old-time artists. Above it says Jerry Byrd played steel on this Hawaiian album. Is that right? I love Jerry Byrd. I learned to play steel by listening to his records. Now listening to these songs, I'm going to get my old richenbacher out of the attic where it has been for 50 yrs! tom7nan
Marty Robbins was a great singer...todays hat singers as I call them lack so much and in no way can come close to this great man. As a matter of fact to me todays country is a waste of time to hear, I will listen to the great older ones like Marty.
Marty did indeed have some of the best steel pickers in the business. This is Jerry Byrd however Jerry's favorite version of "Cry Steel Guitar, Cry was Kitty Wells' version with Little Roy Wiggins on it. So Jerry played a Ting-A-Ling style both as a tribute to Little Roy and because he knew that both he and Little Roy were Marty's favorite steel players. Marty was truly surprised when he heard Jerry's playing in that style. That was the highest one musician can pay another Marty told me once.
@tarquin45 you're right. This ISN'T Jerry Byrd. This is Jim Farmer, my father. Byrd played steel on the other Hawaiian album. Dad was good friends with Jerry Byrd, WIggins, Pete Drake, etc.

You can tell a definite difference,in the steel guitar sound,Little Roy Wiggins playing the steel sound far better than Farmer! Little Roy is Mr Ting-A -Ling
