This video was totally an homage to surrealist artists....women in particular....Leonora Carrington, Remedios Vara, Frida Kahlo.
It is a part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.
The song was written by Bjork. I remember at the time, we were all very intrigued by the idea of Bjork and Madonna "working together" only to later learn they never actually even met. Bjork wasn't particularly a fan and only did it as a favor for her friend, who was a producer working with M.
She simply wrote a song with lyrics she thought it would be interesting to hear Madonna say, as her idea of M was that she was very "in control" of her words and actions. She wanted to convey a sense of letting go.
At any rate, it ended up being a bit of a precursor to Madonna's late 90s work...poetic, atmospheric and very electronic.
The way I tried to match up the imagery to paintings back in 1995 with not the best reference points for some of the artists. My favorite artists to this day. Thanks Madonna!

But you can't deny that Björk set the groundwork for the structure, melody and lyrics of the song along with Nellee Hooper. Madonna altering the lyrics is fine, I'm more interested in her fantastic vision for the video.

Brit Awards is amazing
I haven’t watched this video in years but it’s one of Madonna’s best . I like her dark trippy videos. Bedtime Story, Erotica, Nothing Really Matters
This video was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and it's now part of their permanent heritage. It was the first music video ever to be acquired by a museum as a piece of art. It recreates various works from surrealistic painters like Remedios Varo, Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington and Frida Kahlo. Some scenes are direct recreations of their paintings. It also draws inspiration from the movies "The Color of Pomegranates" and "Hellraiser". There is also a lot of references to Sufism, which is the mystical side of Islam, for example in the whirling dervishes. And finally there's inspiration from Jungian psychology and the ideas of collective consciousness and archetypes.

@@garycambridge5513 museums don't have all their heritage in display, it would be impossible. I work at an art museum so I know. For example in my museum we have an heritage of 1.100 works (paintings, sculptures, videos, etcetera) but we only display a few. And probably if you go to my museum ans ask someone working there where is this or that piece they would give you that same look. The MOMA has an heritage of 150.000 pieces and 22.000 videos. To ask for a view of one of those pieces or videos you will probably have to write a note explaining the reasons why you wanna watch that particular piece or video, with what purpose, etcetera, and probably the only ones who know all the works that make up the heritage are the people who work in the Restoration-Conservation department.

This song kind of represents what Bjork wanted to hear Madonna sing - Björk said in 2001: “I think at the time, [it] was what I wanted to hear from [her] mouth. But that’s like six years ago when everything about her seemed very controlled. I think she’s a very intuitive person, and definitely, her survival instinct is incredible. They’re, like, outrageous. At the time, the words I thought she’d say were, ‘I’m not using words anymore; let’s get unconscious, honey. F*@! logic. Just to be intuitive. Be more free. Go with the flow.'”
She would later say, “When I was offered to write a song for [Madonna], I couldn’t really picture me doing a song that would suit her. But on second thought, I decided to do this to write the things I have always wanted to hear her say that she’s never said.”

This song is top tier for me. Stunning song, marvellous video. Björk is a creative genius and the melding of her lyrics and ideas to Madonna's ability to push the envelope is a sensational marriage of form. It's a shame they have not done more work together

You are correct. When I was on social media I would watch her Instagram and her walls had amazing artwork. I just think about those 4 children she adopted and what a life they were so luckily given. They all have amazing artistic talents. Detractors of her don't see that amazing side of her. ❤

I always thought the "let's get unconscious" part meant ... "Cleansing the doors of perception," i.e. LSD or mushrooms or peyote, etc. And "let's get unconscious, honey" always sounded like "let's get unconscious on E" to me.... LOL... not sure if that says more about this Madonna song or what kind of stuff I had going on in my life when I first heard this music. 🤣 In any case, I love this song- it's like a sneak preview of her Ray of Light era, which is the best Madonna era!

Ohhh i'm excited for this. When i first got into MAdonna, this along with Bad Girl was my favorite video. The song was VERY avant garde when it came out, very trance-like electronica but very melodic too. The video was state of the art for sure when it came out. Technology has come so far since 1995 but back then it was like Wow. I think it's among the most expensive videos of the 90s as well.

Bjork never gave the song to Madonna. Back in the 1994 VMA she was asked about it and she said that Nellee Hooper had asked her to give him the song. Bjork said “I did this a favour to my friend, not to Madonna” which made the interviewer very uncomfortable

Yep , it's a trip! there is a lot of references to paintings, films, mythology, or traditions (like the men dancing and spinning, a turkish dance where they start to spin till they go into a trance) about the unconscious and dreams world

This is actually the only song on Bedtime Stories Madonna didnt write but lyrics came from Björk. I never really knew what she meant by ''And Inside We Are All Still Wet'' Yet it's such a Björk line.
I interpret those lyrics to the saying, “he’s wet behind the ears”. Meaning someone who is new at something and inexperienced. It’s like us humans are still in our infancy of what’s really true.

Surrealist art is one of the most enigmatic and intellectually challenging to interpret much less appreciate, but I must admire that your deeply insightful and cerebral analysis certainly rose up to the challenge!!
Although Madonna didn’t write this song, she gave it life with her own unique singing interpretation that fits its dream like lyricism. And more importantly with her artistic vision and inspirations in collaboration with Mark Romanek’s directing craft, they have created a living, cinematic surrealist art piece worthy of being exhibited and even held on permanent display in visual art museums. You’ll see a glimpse of a similar mystical imagery of Madonna in the closing scenes of the Rain mv that she and Romanek also produced.
Madonna as a creator and admirer of great art, and as she’d done before and later in her artistry, this four and a half minute music video would cost her $5million to produce in 1994 (equivalent to over $10million in today’s inflation rate) making it one of the most expensive mv ever produced. Reportedly, it took 6 days to film the video, but months of planning and editing using then state-of-the-art digital/CGI technology to come up with the new age, futuristic, sci-fi imagery and feel that’s captured in the video. This is amazing and exemplary since by the time of the release of the mv on March 10, 1995 there was no assurance how it would be received in the pop music world. But her instinct would be vindicated by the acclaim it achieved.
It’s also admirable that she’d produced this song/mv that represented a bold, experimental piece in her catalogue that previewed her use of electronica, techno pop, trance music sound in her following albums. Finally, the video clip of a pregnant Madonna giving birth to a of flock of doves, I think, foreshadowed her ardent desire for motherhood which she’d realize with the birth in 1996 of daughter Lourdes Leon, in 2000 with her son Rocco Richie, and her subsequent adoption of 4 orphans from Malawi.

In order to understand where a lot of this comes from you need to watch some Bjork videos. This is what you get when you take two brilliant artists and have them create together.

Not one of my favorites as it doesn’t sound very Madonna at all (Bjork wrote it), but I love the video and remember watching the premiere on MTV back in early 1995 when they had a special Madonna Pajama Party. This is right up there as one of my very favourite M songs. It’s always gives me a few minutes of total escapism whenever I hear it. The lyrics have always deeply resonated with me. The vid does the song huge justice ..it packs so much in to it. So many references and themes that all slot together. I’m a sucker for surrealism in art so this pokes me in all the right places ….

Parts of this video were also inspired by the film “The Color of Pomegranates,” which future work also references. Lady Gaga and REM also had music videos based on the film “Color of Pomegranates.” The film is on RUclips and is super weird and cool.

This song was the last release on Bedtime Stories and along with the song "Sanctuary" would be an introduction to the next direction of spiritual lyrics and electronic music with the next album Ray of light. This project was an extension of the spiritual journey Madonna was on at that time. Also it was strongly base on Hermeticism or Hermetism...........which is a philosophical and religious system based on the teachngs of Hermes Trismegistus (a Hellenistic greek god. )[ The basic meaning of the video was just a series of unconscious dream sequences that tend to become more surreal as the song grows. There are tributes to MANY female painters throughout the video as well. She said that the video inspired by several including Leonara Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Rene Magritte, Remidios Vera, to name few. The shot near the end of the video that shows her with mouths as eyes and vice versa is based on a Frida Kahlo painting- the scene giving birth to doves was inspired by paintings by Rene Magritte and Frida Kahlo. A TRUE piece of artistry.........there truly is NOONE like her!!!

Yes, unfortunately being how great this song and video is, Madonna really had little role in writing the song. Bjork wrote the lyrics and the song. But obviously, Madonna wouldn't have chosen to sing to it, if she didn't relate to it and find a way to make the song more creative and enlightening. So, the messaging of the song really comes from Bjork. While the director plays a huge role in the making of these videos, you can bet Madonna put a lot of input in this. She's very much into art, so a lot of the visuals probably were something she came up with or collaborated with in coming up with.
If you're planning to do a live reaction, the only live version of this (non-concert) is from the 1995 Brit Awards show. She gave quite the stunning performance there as well. Hopefully you are planing that next!

It always blows my mind how quickly you both nail the video concepts!! 🤯 Bjork wrote this song and thought it would be perfect for Madonna as she felt that she was always so serious and polished when writing music and felt she needed to let let go a little. Love this video and song, a bit different of the R&B style of the album. I think it's hard to understand the concept of the video cause it describes a dream, and dreams are hard to understand, tell and describe. In the video i see some references to dream and unconscius, like the young boy smelling opium dry flowers and some dancers called derviches (i think they are from Turkey) that make that particular dance spinning and spinning. After spinning many times, they enter an unconscius extasis. I bet there are many references in the video that it will be interesting to know. I would love that Madonna describe by herself all these things. Good reaction as always 😘😘😘

I just wanted to say this is probably the best reaction I’ve seen to this music video. I enjoyed the conversation. Madonna does like paintings and has a collection. Possibly that idea is correct.
Do you have a suggestion notepad? lol. When you get to the confessions era, that cd version was a continuous song. The songs morphed/transitioned into the next. So if possible, when you do that reaction, can you do it playing the cd version? Spotify version changed the songs to have alternate endings.

This video is such a great piece of art. If I remember correctly she took some of her childhood nightmares and included them with the video, as well as images inspired by paintings and other art work. The video is on permanent collection in Moma. I recommend watching this a couple of times, it will sink in. Not make sense but sort of 😅

What I recall from when the video came out is that Madonna’s alter-ego was a character named Varla and it’s the character you see in the cube with the black hair - I never was able to gather more info as if it Varla was a painter or a 1920s actress as Madonna used older movies as inspiration.

you are right on with a scene being inspired by a painting, in fact there are several references to different paintings throughout the video. There are a few article online that delve into all the painting references. I encourage you to watch her live version of the song at the Brit awards and also the song video produced for her reinvention tour for contrast.

This video is pure art! A favorite of mine. This was a total departure from her other stuff at the time. We were all into Bjork and Madonna at the time. The 90’s had a huge techno influence on artists. I love how Madonna got into electronic music. It fits her so well.

You are right about surrealistic art! It features surrealistic and new age imagery, with influences from artists such as Remedios Varo, Frida Kahlo and Leonora Carrington. I believe the video was or still is permanently displayed at the museum of modern art in New York. The director of this video (Mark Romanek) also directed the video for ‘Rain’.
From Madonna herself “My "Bedtime Story" video was completely inspired by all the female surrealist painters like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. There's that one shot where my hands are up in the air and stars are spinning around me. And me flying through the hallway with my hair trailing behind me, the birds flying out of my open robe - all of those images were an homage to female surrealist painters; there's a little bit of Frida Kahlo in there, too.”

So many great comments here, and not much to add, except... Bjork re-wrote the song for possible inclusion on her own album "Post". She decided not to include it (possibly due to using explicit lyrics in the chorus) but instead it appears in two versions on the B-Sides to her singles Army of Me and It's Oh So Quiet. Bjork's versions are titled "Sweet Intuition" and "Sweet, Sweet Intuition." The latter was recorded in one of my favourite spaces on Earth, The Royal Festival Hall on London's South bank. I played violin there when I was a wee nipper and part of an orchestra. There's something so haunting about the sound there, imperfect and filled with sharp reverbs... Anyways... This video is next level fantastic, as are our favorite RUclips ladies.

It was so funny to see you two looking puzzled from beginning to end 😂 that’s the beauty of this video, it has so many references that you keep trying to make it make sense. Emily was quite right on saying it reminds of surrealist paintings. This was the inspiration for the video. It was supposed to be longer, the storyboard features more scenes like Madonna opening her chest, Madonna turning into a crow, there should be a sort of horse-driven ride, but the video was already over budget. MTV estimated it cost about 1.5 million dollars to make this video, which puts it in the second place in the ranking of most expensive videos ever, staying behind only of Scream by Michael and Janet Jackson. I can’t wait to see you reacting to the Brit Awards performance and I hope you also do the Re-Invention Tour Backdrop (not the performance, just the video from the screens) because it’s a whole new trip, and it makes reference to a Brazilian book 😊

This is one of the most expensive MV in music history. In fact, it is in continuous exhibition at the Art Museum in New York. Several surrealist paintings are depicted here, Remedios Varos, Frida Kahlo are some of the artists whose work Madonna was inspired by. Next, Bedtime Story live at the Brlt Awards, amazing.

I am very glad to see that you guys get the fact that the video is based on a lucid dream and yes: there are many references to different paintings. For example, the image where there are two of her with her face projected on mirrors is inspired by the painting from Frida Khalo called “The Two Fridas”
