I was a US Speed Skier in the early 1990's. I loaned a pair of speed skis to a novice racer for him to take a run since he only had one pair at that race. I got the skis back, re-adjusted the bindings for my boot, and jumpped off the top. What I didn't know was that he had changed the DIN settings. We always keep our DIN settings at 26. He changed mine (lowered it) without telling me. I took the run and broke tuck. It was a smaller course so I wasn't going as fast as this racer in this video, I was doing 104 MPH. I started to make my first large turn to start blowing off the speed, when I realised I was turing, but my ski was not. One of the toes was out of the toeclip of the binding, just hanging there by a thread. Then, just like that, the right ski was gone. All that went through my mind was, "Oh, this is gonna hurt real bad." I had a fraction of a second to react and all that occurred to me was I'd better try to break as hard as I can and blow off as much speed as I could before inpact, so I shifted and put all my weight on my left leg and just laid it down sideways as hard as I could on my remaining ski, just digging it in with everything I had. Somehow, I was able to hold it and hold on, and came to a stop on one ski from over 100MPH. I narrowly averted what I thought was an absolute crash. Just after that, there was a mix up with the FIS Starters. They sent the next racer and I almost got hit by the next racer when I was picking up my ski, I dove out of the way & he (Floyd Conradi) jumped over my ancles at 100MPH but that's a story for another day! Some of the worst leg breaks at ski resorts are skiers clicked in to their skis and standing still, or moving very slowly. Legs break or knees torn up when bindings don't release.
I was reading the description, and now I'm confused. How does a skier go faster than the terminal velocity of a sky diver? Isn't that impossible? A sky diver is going straight down with nothing but air keeping them from accelerating. A skier is going down a slope with the drag of the air and the drag of their skis on the snow preventing further acceleration. Surely the terminal velocity of a skier is slower than that of a sky diver. Anyone with a better understanding of the physics behind it all, feel free to enlighten me.
A sky diver usually doesn't wear an aerodynamic suit and if he spreads his arms and legs out in an horizontal position he will only accelerate up to 200km/h. If he falls vertically though, he will get a lot faster, so the title is a bit misleading.
Gramatický Komunista Friction burns are one common injury downhill skiers and downhill snow mountain bikers have to deal with.
If he falls vertically though, he will get a lot faster, so the title is a bit misleading.
kinda sus
@JanFarell What is the reason for skiing in such a wide squat?
Literally one of the fastest sports and they don't have chin straps on the helmet 🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦
Read the description
All the hard work they put in.. And this happens.. But he got up..
It was impossible to try to stop just with a single ski a that speed
It was certainly worth a try, can you imagine he succeeded? He'd be world-famous ;)
What kind of DIN settings do speed skiers usually run? Is it as bad as alpine racers?
Dang now imagine he’s gotta go home and tell his husband about this
PhaseSkater is he gay or something? Xd
hahaha
What are those ankle boots? They inflate on impact? I never heard of that
And ski jumpers think that they know what pain is with their 60mph crashes. XD
What kind of suit does the guy have? Does it have a mechanism that activates the air bags on his chins?
mild carnage
haha
Pre-release is the stuff of nightmares for any skier.
Friction burns anybody....
Rere West On a snow? RLY?
yes they get very bad friction burns from the heat built up from there suits sliding against the course texture of the snow.
Gramatický Komunista Friction burns are one common injury downhill skiers and downhill snow mountain bikers have to deal with. Their in thin neoprene or polyester skin suits and once you fall at high speed friction heats up suit as skier slides over hard ice and snow , basically burning the material and causes burns...nasty ones .
Rere West Oh, that sounds painfully...
So much fiction is created from sliding on the snow like that, that the suit can melt into his skin.
he needs to build up his leg muscles before entering the supreme discipline of high-speed ski
Since you're posting the same comment on several videos you must be an expert, would you care to share your leg training techniques? ;)
lenny108 : you're a dumb ass
haha
haha, dumb ass is someone who doesn't know how to build up leg muscle
So enlighten us please!
Was the guy that sprayed the blue lines going that fast too ?
