The abundance of Draw Cuts in Scottish Broadsword fighting makes sense when you consider that armor was largely phased out by the time they were the norm. The most you could usually expect to encounter in the way of protection was thick Wool clothing and maybe a Wool cloak.
This is a good video but it seems to contain factual and historical inaccuracies. I'm pretty sure that broadswords are in fact two handed, at least a foot wide, and are wielded by berserkers as they charge into battle wearing naught but the froth from their mouths.
The principle weapon of the Highlanders was the skirl of the pipes. The eerie sound scared their enemies. And then the enemies learned that Highlanders listened to the pipes for *pleasure.* Clearly they must be insane and therefore very dangerous.
@@darthplagueis13 After the battle of Culloden they British banned pipes, gaelic and tartan...basically an attempt to destroy our culture. But you know as the leftist's say, you cant be oppressed if you are white.
The “Brits” is a very poor term for referring tae the Seis. Dunnae let ‘em maek ye think tha THEY are the tru British. In fact, the Scots ARE British. They probably have more British heritage than many of the English. The British are the native people of Britain. Their clearest modern descendants are the Welsh, who speak a language close to what was spoken in what is today Scotland, before the Scotti brought Gaelic from Ireland. Some British (Pictish) words can still be heard in the unique form of Irish which is Scots Gallic (another confusing term giving it does not refer to ‘Gaul’). Now, as for the outlawing: the evidence suggests not that there was a cultural motive in the prohibitions brought about in the 1700s, but rather a military concern. After the English brought Scotland into the empire, there were two Jacobite revolts in the 1710s and the 1740s. Because of this, there were a couple of attempts to surpress the *Scottish Clan System* specifically to take down organisations of armed men. For this reason, we see some laws cracking down on MILITARY aspects of Scotland. The broadsword was just one of the weapons of the day, in the Disarmament Act, all weapons were banned, but it was apparently impossible to enforce and wasn’t respected locally. Unsurprising, because everyone carried in those days, for personal protection in a wild (arguably purer) world. Highland Pipes were for a brief time considered a part of that military activity. I do have to point out, the bagpipes are not especially Scottish, you might think of them as a Persian instrument, played in Spain, Wales and, yes even England, before they even arrived in Scotland. There were however some curious depictions of something called “The Triple Pipes” from about the 7th century onward on Pictish slabs. They’re some type of reed pipe, but not actually bagpipes. So, energy and anger would be best invested elsewhere than in “the pipes” of Scotland, being the bagpipes. Finally; tartan was not banned, Highland Dress specifically was very briefly banned, as a part of the Jacobite clan system. This also only applied to men and boys (fighting people, threats, women were exempt). After a little over a mere 20 years, Scottish lords got the act repealed. There are certainly things we can do to make modern Scottish and Native British identity stronger, but sulking about historical myths isn’t going to do any good. Learn the martial arts of your people, learn the names of the gods (the true, pagan ones), and find out how to honour your ancestors. This will bring glory to you and yours.

Very well actually as it was extremely effective against the bayonet which is essentially a 5-6 foot spear. The targe pushes the bayonet to the side and the broadsword comes down onto the head/shoulders of the enemy (generally Redcoats) and then you progress onto the next line....in theory anyway. I'm sure it is somewhat more difficult in reality lol

Blitz 0012 I don’t understand why that needs a video, a like is just spear 2 longer edition a halberd is a combination of a spear and an oddly shaped axe that allows the weapon to be used for more than just stabbing at somebody straight on, you could spike them if it had a spike on the back, cut them with the blade or stab if desired. Weapons don’t really fill the same niche on warfare. Not really able to say one is better than the other since if you want to stab the pike is the obvious better choice as it has more range and a better head for stabbing while a halberd is better as a general weapons offering more options. It’s like comparing a falchion or Sabre to a war hammer or mace they just don’t fill the same need beyond killing some poor sod.

Just finished a highland fighting course with Jonathan last night. Over the weeks we covered old style broadsword, then moved on to sword and targe fighting. The last couple of weeks were complete madness and some of the best fun I've ever had. 2 v 2 fights, 6 v6 group fights, group fights with mixed weapons, it's not only informative but great exercise and terrific fun. I highly recommend anyone in Glasgow to nip by and give it a try!
An other thing with the Targe is some had a 9" spike in the center. In my own research with my 15 c. Targe and the demonstrator at the Battle of Coloden there is a way to cut potentially three foes in three steps with the Dirk, Targe, and Broadsword. The order starts with the Targe in the right hand hit the line of battle. Sword come down on the second man in the line directly in front. Break rule 3 cross with the Dirk to the third man in the line to your left.
Рогожарски Пилот That's what I want to know too. The videos are pretty entertaining. Although, looking through the playlist it does seem like some of them got deleted, and I don't know why.
In Spain he had the "rodeleros" who actually fought in a similar fashion, but here whe had the "espada de punta y corte" similar to the basquet broadsword and "rodela" a metal shield similar in size (maybe a little bigger) and with the same grip (centered strap grip) as the targe

Okay, here's a few problems with this system for those watching: 1 - It is not backed up by any real written documentation of Highland Sword and Targe. The only system written down was by Thomas Page, and is nothing like what is here. If you wish to see videos of this system, check out Jay Maas at the YT channel Broadsword Academy Manitoba. (an example is the stance is wrong, Page instructs a square on stance, not a 1 leg forward stance) 2 - While it is possible the lugs on a Broadsword are for levering targes, there are a few problems with this conjecture. Some Broadswords have very insignificant lugs, why would this be the case if the were important to targe fighting. You can lever a targe perfectly fine without lugs, you can do it with and arming sword of a basket hilt with no lugs. Levering a targe is INCREDIBLY difficult to pull off in full speed combat. Some of the most pronounced lugs I've seen on any antique Broadsword are on the 1828 Highland Officers Broadsword, over 80 years after Targes fell out of use. What were they for, I don't know but I reckon they were for style/added protection - a lot of antiques have these features beaten down so they clearly took quite a hammering. 3 - There are virtually no record of people fighing with the dirk and targe, in one hand, at the same time. You may have had it in you're hand for convenience in case you were disarmed, but almost certainly not for fighting with. 4 - The illustrations mentioned are the Penicuik Sketches, the are very questionable to use as fighting instructions, and I have never seen an antique targe with an offset grip. 5 - Rule number 1 is not backed up by historical documentation. The three sources (of which only one is a system of fighting (T. Page), the other two make off hand mentions of them) for broadsword and targe make no reference to moving the targe with broadsword and show illustration NOT moving the Tagre with the sword. 6 - Rule 2 is contradicted by the aforementioned T. Page who states - in no uncertain terms - "The guards made by the sword are often omitted... and the Blow is received upon the Target". You can block the outside with the sword, but it is not a hard and fast rule. 7 - Rule 3 is contradicted by the aforementioned point 6 - if you block your outside with the Targe, you cross your weapons, a way around this is to raise your sword into a hanging guard and throw above your own targe. - Kindred
I might do a video about those Fight Camp classes too. Worth delving into three different ways to fight with sword and targe that I remember (one being from May Melee the year before).
Scottish shield jokes are as obvious as the Targe Mahal. Not forgetting the other rule "Don't be distracted by a lovely turboprop aeroplane" (as I would be).
'Mahal' - for when you truly want 'to rub it in'. An ancient Scottish blend of eleven different herbs & spices - sprinkled liberally across a blood soaked targe, it restores useable friction & really irritates the enemy.
This is completely inaccurate. The sword is six feet too short and he did not shout "Don má glats!" and then proceed to fomorian kick (feint), to Caber Toss, and finish with an unblockable top heavy. 0/5

It would be nice if you chose some lesser popular ones, like Russo-Japanese or Franco-Prussian war. Spanish Civil War perhaps? There's plenty to pick from. It doesn't have to be comprehensive but memorable. This way your videos could be even used in history classes to show the topic from the charismatic point of view.
Thank you for doing what you do for us! :)
If he does this you will be legend
If he does it he is one :)
Ideas are plenty nowadays - it just takes a real talent to forge them into a reality IMHO.
I learned to fight this way when I was a kid. Love this mate
Artillery ONLY!!!!!!!!
AxiomExotic oh no
#300k
The infection grows STRONKER
More like orengers launching cows at civs
Oh damn did i just find a 7month old art only comment? Wow better get is back to the museum
Loved this video! Basket hilt kind of limits to one hand and targe definitely seals the deal. Next best thing to being armored up.
I probly never gonna swing a sword (or anyother weapon)
But i do enjoy the martial art and historical videos of this channel
I am playing with block and cut knee or lower leg. Then use left shield push outward, and straight hit.
I saw Braveheart so already know how Highlanders fought!
Oof
Ouff
Mooning the enemy, then getting shot to pieces by English archers?
Were there any Highlanders in that movie? All I saw were Irish soldiers dicking around on a bloody big lawn...
Yeah by being led into battle by a midget .
To me all the channels have the same trendy vibe and feel but your's has always delivered a breath of fresh air in that "I don't give a damn about the views" way! Thank you for it ser Lloyd and take better care of your voice please!
man i like lindy's pants, wonder where he got them.
Probably made them himself, would be my guess. ;)
British army lightweights. Getting harder to find now.
Shouldn’t he be wearing a kilt in this video
I have a pair of those* from my teenage years.... absolutely no way I could fit into them now but it's interesting to see how insanely thin I once was.
*Army lightweights that is, not a kilt.
hey thank you lindy.
Hmm... this seems inaccurate. Definitely needs more DUNMAHGLASS!
Just in time for my next renaissance faire! Thanks lindy!
Me:
RUclips: definitive sword and shield tutorial
Thank god for this tutorial needed to improve my targe skills
Is that a Viking broad sword?
C3 no, it’s not raiding or pillaging, so it is certainly not viking. It may vike in the future, though.
Yes
It has not yet Viked.
Is there a "disvike" button for comments like this? LOL
DO ARTILLERY ONLY LINDY!!!
next thing you know, lloyd starts uploading hoi4 vids (he'd only play Britain, of course)
Yet to find a video from Lindybeige that isn't simply brilliant
Lindy, what ever happened with Q217?
His son will continue it and his gran grand grandson will finish it
Рогожарски Пилот That's what I want to know too. The videos are pretty entertaining. Although, looking through the playlist it does seem like some of them got deleted, and I don't know why.
Will Roth no, all the videos are still there, but some of them just aren't in the playlist for no good reason.
This is perfect! I just made a Scotttish targe with a self portrait of myself in brass tacks on it. Great video!
LINDY! You posted this during Gamescom Live! Gah, Now I dont know what I want to watch any more!
These were quite interesting! I'd love to see more of these in the future!
How is that armor going?
Spoke to my armourer today. At least another month.
@@lindybeige ill be looking forward to the video about it.
@@lindybeige one day I would also like to be able to say that I have to speak to my armourer :) this is so fancy
Decided on the helmet yet?
@@duchessskye4072 how about a houndskull.
In Spain he had the "rodeleros" who actually fought in a similar fashion, but here whe had the "espada de punta y corte" similar to the basquet broadsword and "rodela" a metal shield similar in size (maybe a little bigger) and with the same grip (centered strap grip) as the targe
All right we’re coming in for our landing, there is a bit of cross breezy, and o yes below us there are couple men LARPing... yes well then, right, back to the landing.
ha ha ha ! that's a good one :)
I love these "hands-on" demo type videos. I learned so much in just 5mins, so please make more if you can! Why doesn't the Academy of Historical Arts make videos? Perhaps you can collaborate with them as it worked well here. Also, the comments section is hilarious.
For reference:
1:38 Rule #1: We move our weapons together
2:35 Rule #2: Each limb guards itself
3:20 Rule #3: We don't cross our weapons or body over
3:52 Rule #4: We don't block our face with our Targe
4:22 Rule #5: Break the rules!
Took this to the new game *Mordhau* and managed to kill lots of people!
all light armor, rapier (avoid stabspam because ppl learned how to chamber), buckler and dodge perk.
Another great video! Would like to see more with the dirk too as ive heard it was a crucial component of the fighting technique!
I was expecting a fight dammit you!
I research a lot of sword lore, and even I just learned three or more new things from this vid! You da’ man. I like your WWII stuff and whatnot as well, but do more things like this!
Cool. Not enough stuff done on Scottish martial arts.
Beautiful work sir.
Damn, I have three PCs on in the room I'm sitting in. I paused the video three times trying to figure out which one of them was ramping up. Then that message about the airport came up... I'm just going to pretend this never happened.
Too late, you've already admitted it here on the comments.
Whatever happens on the Lindybeige RUclips channel comments, stays on the Lindybeige RUclips channel comments.
I know the feeling of "shit shit shit why!?, ..why you working so hard comp!? Staaaaahp, dont you die on me!!."..oh wait it was just a plane or turbo diesel.
#firstwouldproblems #plztradefriend
Another great video mate ! God Bless You !
Okay, here's a few problems with this system for those watching:
1 - It is not backed up by any real written documentation of Highland Sword and Targe. The only system written down was by Thomas Page, and is nothing like what is here. If you wish to see videos of this system, check out Jay Maas at the YT channel Broadsword Academy Manitoba. (an example is the stance is wrong, Page instructs a square on stance, not a 1 leg forward stance)
2 - While it is possible the lugs on a Broadsword are for levering targes, there are a few problems with this conjecture.
- Kindred
The workshop I did immediately after this one was on Page's system. It leaves us largely ignorant, so experimentation fills the gaps.
This video made me very happy. Thank you lloyd.
Not once did you enter offensive stance to taunt your opponent. Highly inaccurate.
I really liked this system, thanks for sharing. Get better Lloyd XD
Liked the video, but next could you do a video on a Viking broadsword, heard there pretty cool
Good on you for subtitling when you're hard to hear. Certain RUclipsrs need to do this.
This is completely inaccurate. The sword is six feet too short and he did not shout "Don má glats!" and then proceed to fomorian kick (feint), to Caber Toss, and finish with an unblockable top heavy. 0/5
Great video! More of these please.
This is obviously not period correct Scottish combat. They need to be in lacoste tracksuits wielding broken buckfast bottles
Even if the rest of this video was garbage (which it wasn't), it deserves a thumbs up purely for the outro quip.
I have nothing to add to this, I'm just saying hi.
Greetings good sir !
wonderful video! I enjoyed it emensly ! I'm a fan of targes.
Rule 5: Break the Rules
That’s the most Scottish thing ever
The last rule of any good fighting system, and the final rule in general.
Thats quite a intricate way to fight especially with the knife on the left hand at the same time.
I have nothing witty to say :(
YOUR HONESTY DOES YOU CREDIT!!! YOU SEEM NICE!!!
“To play a fool, take a certain kind of wit.” - Shakespeare
Neither have I, but I talk for ages anyway . . .
Ok, my best " shaolin monk accent: " Grasshopper, when words are no better than silence...a wise man says nothing". ....nooooo it just doesnt work well when typed! Lol, best regards
It's really nice to watch vids by people that know what they're talking about.
👍👍👍👍⚔⚔⚔
Where do you do your shopping for cloths? I would very much like to start dressing in a similar style.
he buys normal white dress shirts and then adjusts them to his personal style. He made a video about it

Well whatever you do please don't start wearing sneakers with a kilt ... recently when I was in the supermarket at night a man was dressed in the full Scottish kilt outfit... cap, old-time shirt , Kilt... everything looked great ..except the sneakers ruined the whole look.
I asked him if he was just coming back from an event and he looked at me very seriously and said no I dress like this all the time... I laughed because I thought he was joking ... but he was very serious and told me again that he loves The Kilt and the whole outfit and chooses to dress this way.
I really like it too... by the way this was in suburban Dallas , Texas ...
Thats TX for you. LMAO. State of LARPers.

I didn't know that I thought their main game playing is with guns.. all sorts of guns and the bigger the better is how they look at it here.
I'm originally from Philly and back in the day is where I saw more of what you're talking about.. at night around the University of Pennsylvania campus.
... Accidentally , as I cut in between some buildings and they looked pretty embarrassed when I interrupted some of them being knighted.. behind the bushes , no less .
I heard a historian once describe a broadsword as a softball bat with a sharp edge. Not something you'd want to meet up with indeed.
Why is Lindy fighting a disgustingly non-drunk Scotsman with a Viking broadsword?
You mean a Viking broad's sword
I thought the Broadsword was named in comparison to the smallsword. That it was a more recent sword design appearing with military sabers
