Inherited an old craftsmanlt1000 recently. As soon as I got the mower deck restored, the starter fried. Just ordered my 591606 from lowes for $60 to my door. I'll probably just get the starter motor rebuilt locally, if this really works. Thanks for the content!
It works! Takes a few pulls from cold, usually builds up to a wicked backfire with the first several, and the very next pull after the backfire catches. I did find that the red shroud had holes predrilled, but we're covered by a black plastic trim ring. Pulled the ring and the starter bolts right onto the factory holes of the shroud. May add a hole and grommet to the side of the hood so i can pull start without raising the hood.

Lowes was out of stock and canceled. Paid $75 in the end at local small engine repair shop.
