I really appreciate that you don't have ads in these. I totally understand why people do use ads for making money but I just really like that I can set my phone down and listen to this without scrambling to get up and press the skip ads button in the middle of the podcast

How awesome and brave are you to take a leap of faith! I was working 2 jobs just for a short time to catch up on bills. Now, I am now working just 1 part time and so much time and peace of mind. I now get to pursue an opportunity for a better career and more time for things that bring joy to my life.

Good for you. It is far more important to take engage with yourself and your loved ones, take siestas, lay on your back and play with your toes, accept invitations from neighbors, and enjoy your life. I did the same. Our culture changes with our choices.

Just curious? 🤔 If you don’t mind..and anyone can respond. How can someone do so? I mean where does the money come from to live if we don’t have jobs. Most people can’t afford decent medical insurance without a pretty significant job. Even without just to keep a roof over your head and food on the table requires so much that’s without any ups and downs or life complications...

@@vcook9710 no problem I totally understand your question... I quit my 50-70 hour big four accounting job but I did get another job, which allows me to take 1 day per week off and only work 36 hours. Pays a little less but you know I also consume a lot less since following the minimalists podcasts.

Sometimes my youtube watch list feels like a to do list. As I feel myself pulling away from social media more and more, I still like your content because it brings the focus back to what I want for my life. That can be hard to keep in mind with work and social obligations, last minute invites or work projects. In a way I am having to re-train my brain not to be stressed and to just minimize the obligations.

My favourite days are those I wake up to with nothing planned and can ask myself "what would I like to do today?" So freeing and satisfying.
Take care guys that the success of the minimalist alternative to the corporate lifestyle doesn't overtake you and lead to a life closer to the one you rejected than you would really like!

22:00 is Ryan starts talking about accepting that he may not ever be the best at each of his hobbies because we just can’t do everything and master everything we want to. But he still gives time to each of those hobbies and gradually grows in them. That’s actually a great ability to have because some of us that have perfectionist tendencies have desires to try many hobbies but the fear of not being good at or mastering any of them keeps us from starting and enjoying even one of them!! It’s the same idea of analysis paralysis where u have too many options to choose from so you are just paralyzed and make no choice. Well, a perfectionist can want to try so many things but can’t move or begin any because of the fear of not being good at the thing OR choosing one hobby and missing out on the others. lol. We are a complex mess in our minds sometimes! We need more freedom just to be and try!

Oddly, listening you talk about freeing up time reminds me of the videos about 1950s perfect kitchens adds, those short half an hour movies of women freeing up more of their time by turning their kitchens more efficient for them so they spend less time there. Same thing, in a way, pick out extra stuff and focus the intent to achieve the goal of simpler life and more time.
In short, I totally agree with you on this.

I have learned to say "NO" because once you start saying "YES" all of the time then it becomes "infinite" as the new normal that YOU are available all of the time so people can start to tailer towards my schedule and if it doesn't work then it doesn't work.

My son is so focused on his career and making money to get ahead that I fear he is missing out on life. We have tried talking to him about it and even his girlfriend would like to slow down and enjoy what they have now and not always be working 7 days a week, 12-14 hour days to "get ahead". I would love to send him one of your books. Which do you think might help him without being overwhelming? He has even mentioned to me recently that he is tired and would like to live more simply. He is only 27 and I do worry that he is missing out on what is really important.

You are complete without all of those things on your to do list! You're lying to yourself and the world when you say "yes" to everything. Because you can't do it all. Accept your own limitations. Harder to tell yourself no than everyone else. Everyone you know has expectations of you. You're not obligated to fulfill their expectations. An empty calendar is real freedom. Hell yeah = your true priorities. Busyness is the new status symbol. We're wired to fear true danger, now our calendars are the apex predators in our lives. We didn't evolve for this kind of chaos. We're too busy because we're afraid to slow down. If you only had 6 months to live, would you be doing all the busy, chaotic things that you're filling your life with? Most things on our calendar are a "yeah, I guess so," not a "hell, yeah". Busy is an excuse, not a lifestyle. Powerful stuff, guys.

‘Busy’ it’s my most hated word! I can’t stand it when someone says ‘I’m too busy, I’m really busy...’ blah blah blah. All I hear is ‘you aren’t important enough to me.’ No one is too busy, sometimes it’s a choice, sometimes it’s autopilot but either way, it’s a toxic word

I hear you. It is a constant juggle with kids. I have 3 and I have to be creative bc it can get so overwhelming. When I worked full time, I would try to run 2 errands a week after picking up the kids. I would leave maybe 1-2 errands for a Saturday morning. My kids are only allowed to have one activity outside of school and if they get tutored it is online at home- that cut down on the running. Not sure if you can come up with a few strategies to free up a little time on your days off. It is a struggle so I hear you. Blessings to you and your family.
