    I remember years ago a good friend of mine who happens to be a pro, said play off the Reds. You see the course differently and you don’t always fall into ‘oh I know what club it is from here!’ He never said it was easier either! Good video. Thanks.

    I've been playing from the short tees for over a year now. It has given me the opportunity to enjoy my golf much more. I only hit 200 yards with my driver. In my 70's. Age not score. 😅

      Very much like my friend for distance off the tee. Got to have a decent short game as you use it so much. I remember 25 years ago playing with guys in their 70's who gave me an education round the greens. I could watch them all day. A friend of my Dad's was a member of a short 4750 par 67 course and he beat his age one time. I wonder if I will get the chance to copy him. It's not an easy course despite being short. I've done 2 videos on this channel about the course.
      Best of luck and keep playing. Cheers

      Over 80. Not sure I will get that far. A quick question. Have you changed your driver over the years? I mean, going from 10.5 to a 12.5 driver. If so, has that helped?

    Interesting as always Simon! As I've probably told you before, this year, my worst competition round was from our red tees as I was completely done-in by teeing off closer to the green! So I hit driver when I should have hit 3-wood and 3-wood when I should have hit hybrid. I then found it hard to correctly club the next shot as I was "out of position", resulting in a pigs ear of "too short or too long"! Never again! Scarred for life!!!!

      I messed up a couple of times. Although on 2 I thought I had hit a gem and it just scooted across the fairway. I should of known better and used my brain a bit better. Hard to be positive though when the ball is jumping all over the greens. Job has to be done though, can't complain. I might do it again somewhere else if the course is assessed. Simon

    Hey, Simon; greetings from sunny Tucson, AZ! Here in the States, the ladies don't really get much of a break in that the red tees are rarely more than 5-10 yards forward of the mens' tees, so GIRs are a rare occurrence for them. Hardly seems fair.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 месяца назад

      Hello Sean, I've played a lot of mixed golf over the years with Ladies older than myself. They can't even reach some fairways. We had a big argument with the club one time and eventually they agreed to cut 2 fairways back closer to the tee. But that's extra time. They didn't like it. The Ladies do get forgotton about. You might only have 50 (or less) in a membership of 750 so they get ignored in favour of the 3 guys who can hit it 300 yards.
      That's why I like Thailand, hardly any clubs are members clubs. They are run for holiday makers and ex-pats the vast majority of which are old.

    In our golf society here in Spain, golfers of a certain age and ability can play off the red tees. Also with the slope system before you tee off you can tell the handicap secretary which tee you want to play from. For example if you play off 11 and you want to play from the reds you will lose 6 shots but it doesn’t always workout to your advantage. It’s a bit of fun to keep golf enjoyable but most of the time it’s Ladies off reds and guy’s off yellows.

    Î live in Austria. Here (also in Germany) pretty much all courses have four tees: 2 men's and 2 ladies'. The Austrians (and Germans) think it is a set-in-stone rule of golf that all men must play from the men's tees. Consequently, you often see old gents who hit their driver about 110 yards playing from the men's tees and always having 3 to 4 shots to the green on the even the shortest par 4's. On top of this, the Austrians seem to think that the mark of a quality course is that it is hard, even for low handicappers. Every hole is either very long or beset with water, bunkers, hedges close to the fareway and 2-tier greens, and sometimes all of the above. I am 73 and have lost some distance and play from the second "ladies tees" and usually have to explain why I do this.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  2 месяца назад +2

      We have the same sort of strict rules here too. Plus if you play forward you will get ribbed about it by your friends. For weeks probably. I know some courses that want to make the course as hard as possible for the 3 men in the club that can hit it 300 yards. All it does is make the course hard for everyone. It's a stupid ego thing. I played a wonderful course about 10 years ago. All the trouble was out of reach for ordinary golfers, it was only the very best who had to worry about it. Great design. I feel that Europe is infected by American golf design, water everywhere you don't need it. I will be playing forward more often now. Cheers

    Bryson Dechambeau had a coach when he was much younger who insisted that he play the reds and only the reds until he could consistently score in the 60's. Then he was allowed to move up to the longer tees. So he learned how to score, and then he added distance. I've always thought that was a solid game plan.

      Got to agree. If you were teaching a complete beginner you would start with a 3 foot putt and get them holing 100 of those. Then move out getting longer and longer. Bryson is certainly a rather special golfer. I'm glad he has reined in the driving, I think that was only going to lead to injuries he would regret getting. So the forward tees put you in places you've not played before. Then you're putting unusual lines in the green. So it's like playing a new course, which makes life just a little bit more interesting. Sorry it's going to take so long to get the course assessed. Luckily in France we have been playing to WHS a lot longer, so now I think all our courses have been assessed for all tees for all categories. I'm sure you'll find the forward tees to be an interesting challenge - just need to adjust the strategy. Then when the forward tees have been assessed for all categories you can see how different strategies can affect your results and even adjust your index.

    The magic word worked last time, I hope it works again. Early doors look promising.
    I do think it is ridiculous that the red tees aren't rated for men.
    Likewise yellow and whites should be rated for women. It's only a calculation, by the time they've done the measurements which they have to do, it should be simple.

      The WHS tee and slope rating system to standardize courses around the world is a good step forward. However, it still makes no sense to rate (the same set of) tees for women and men separately. The golf ball does not know what gender is smiting it. So, more specifically, the red and other tees should be rated 'scratch' for a specific range of swing or ball speeds.

      Hi Gary, it seems there is a magic word. I must be careful with it. The clubs are slowly catching up. Gloucester got reassessed and they had maybe 5 members of staff and they took all day to do 3 tees. Then you wait for the result and buy new boards for the 1st tee. It's just taking time to get round them all. Plus some clubs don't want it at all. Stick in the mud sort of clubs I guess. Cheers
