Here we are with the latest installment of this series! Since Dan's been in the news lately with the SFV season V announcements, I figure its a great enough time to showcase what he's been all about! I will say that while Dan might think SNK is a pretty silly company, I think they are a pretty cool company :) *edit* boo boo in the video, Capcom actually lost the lawsuit against Data east, I guess I was remembering in my personal court of moral opinion cause Data east was 100% guilty of what was being thrown at them heh.
You know, I know it'll never happen, but it would be interesting to play as his father just once. Like, a better, more mechanically interesting Dan Hibiki would be interesting to see in this game.
I came here to say something similar. Dan was the guy you chose to handicap yourself against others to make it more of a challenge. He was fun to use against cocky players.
I thought that Saikyo Ryu was a jab at Ryo and Robert's Kyokogenryu (which I've seen translated as "Extreme Style"), and Dan's revenge story ripped on Terry's revenge on Geese. Dan is just too deep with parody!
@@WikiHL Robert is also modeled after Andy Garcia from The Godfather: Part III as well as Thomas Ian Griffith from The Karate Kid: Part III. Dan on the other hand is a parody of Ryo and Robert in general, but also has the face and out-of-shape physique of Steven Seagal.
Wait what, just googled it and yeah its right but in my mind I remembered it the other way around woops. Data east 100% was ripping off street fighter blatantly so maybe I just remembered in the court of moral opinion instead lol
You probably already know this, but Dan is now the official MC of Street Fighter V shop section. I just recently started working as quality assurance for Capcom Japan, and we are still tune fining his “Summary” dialogues for shop items such as alternate costumes, alternate colors, stage descriptions and BGM’s. His lines are hilarious.
Maybe I missed it in the video but the creator of Street Fighter made Art of Fighting. You can't steal from yourself. But both styles are based off the real life Kyokushin style founded by a man hated in Japan for being Korean. Mr Karate is based off him. Gouken somewhat too.
And it seems you all are a bit too much of SNK fans, since Nishiyama created Fatal Fury, and only worked on Art of Fighting, but he himself didn't create it.
I was told, maybe incorrectly, that SNK and Capcom had employees that used to work for the rival company. One of the reasons CVS/SVC happened is they actually knew each other. The SVC games were practically flagship titles for the Neo Geo Pocket Color! Also, while Dan is making fun of Ryo and Robert's fighting style, you need to look back to the original Art of Fighting. It was a rather innovative yet rough playing title, but the main thing would be the Spirit meter. All specials plus supers and desperation attacks (firsts in the genre IIRC) drew from this limited resource. As you kept using them you would see the attacks getting worse, even losing access to moves if you didn't have enough Spirit. You could recharge it but it made you vulnerable. It came back on it's own slowly. And being taunted would cause you to lose it too. Ryo and Robert's fireballs, at no Spirit, extended out maybe past their hands. Dan copies this perfectly. Dan's LK Dankyaku mirrors their no Spirit kick decently (it's better IMO). Stuff like that. I propose Dan was Capcom having a good natured joke at their friends over at SNK, not a middle finger. Again, based on my understanding of the history. And really, he's a well needed joke. We used to take ourselves too seriously at times :) Plus remember: artists like things their fans don't or head cannon as rivals. My favorite being Rob Zombie liking Babymetal :)
Bro, the same guy that made Ryu in Capcom made Ryo in SnK. This is just marketing. But I love this love n hate relationship between ex-employees. Same happened with Rockman and Mighty Number 9. inafune who created megaman's design, left Capcom and made his own character without right problems. He failed, but Capcom employees copied what's interesting in that game and pasted it over Rockman/Megaman 11. Funny and sad at the same time.
Dan is unironically one of the key reasons I really got into Fighting games. I mained him in SF4 just because of how much of a joke he was, then a while later, I got CvS2 on my PS3, which is how I found out about him being a knock off of Ryo, which made me learn more about Ryo, along side the rest of SNK, and the rest is history. Just putting this out there, 'cause I'll always love seeing Dan get some attention.
I say this everytime for these vids, but since they so outside the usual wheelhouse I deal in if you wanna like/share etc with all the usual metrics that help youtube videos out please do! The algorithm tends not to favour things you do once you establish whats "normal" for a channel, so that would help out a ton!
The super taunt in SF4 actually did have two uses. There was a combo that required it to cancel into Ultra to make the ultra connect. Plus you could use the super taunt to bait out an attack and cancel into ultra for the punish
Cool factoid about Dan is that he first appeared as a bonus character in Alpha 1 but despite being a joke, his alpha move actually had the most damage of anyone in the game and appeared to influence Ken's own Alpha moves in subsequent games!
And even years later, the SNK references do. Not. STOP. His whole character is built to be a parody, and it will not stop every time he makes his return. Makes me wonder how SNK’s revival and a potential Garou sequel will factor more into Dan’s, well, EVERYTHING 😬
Dan as he stands. That rhymes. 😆 I always kinda knew Dan's an amalgamation of Ryo and Robert back then though I didn't knew it was intentional until later. Makes me think their stories in Capcom Vs. SNK. Also yes, despite Dan's goofiness he does have a good back story. And in the hands of a good player, Dan can be a cool fighter.
Describing SNK fighting games as being Street Fighter clones is not super accurate, given that one of SF's original creators Takashi Nishiyama went to SNK. Art of Fighting is more like a successor to SF... Top Hat Gaming Man has a great video on this.
AoF absolutely had its own stuff, but at it would have never existed without SF2 and you just need to look at Ryo to understand how much they are taking from the source material. I love SNK to death but its obvious enough.
He also made a commercial about going to his dojo but he forgot to put the address in it's commercial that's why he doesn't have many students. He is his own worst enemy.
When KoF 15 finally becomes a real thing I will. I actually originally tried to use dans themes for this video but never of them jive with talking very well
I love this series! I was pretty excited earlier when I saw that you not only made a new video in the series, but that it was Dan! Couldn’t wait to watch it after I got home from work!
the king of strong style himself, hell yeah i can't believe i'm seeing capcom diehards saying that dan needs to be strong in street fighter v. esports isn't ready for dan and his goonery/buffoonery
One interesting thing about Dan is that his move set looks to be a blend of Muay Thai and Ansatsuken. His gadouken and koryuken are obviously based off Gouken's teachings, but his Dan Kicks are strikingly similar to Tiger Knee, especially the light versions. Other examples are how both Dan and Sagat have similar cl.HK, cl.LP., and in generally Dan uses more elbows and knees in his normals a la muay thai. The deep lore implication is that he sees muay thai as having techniques worthy of the Strongest Style since those were what killed his father.
Knx "Dan's infinite"..dope track. Alpha 3 was my first intro to Dan. I appreciate that he's a underdog character. Never knew that he was a middie from CAP to SNK. Dope, it adds.
Cool vid. I was well aware of circumstance behind Dan's creation, but never really knew it went that deep (I was never really into SNK games). Also, I enjoy when fighting games have lore and characters have an actual history that continues through multiple games.
That art is from WAY back in the day, before there was ever a dan, or go hibiki in the story. The image was later retconned into stating it was Go Hibiki so ehh why not put it in

In street fighter 4, theres a DLC called Omega mode that turns Dan into basically Ryo with all his moves. A very good player can stomp with dan. Back when we had game times at the local fast food place we brought out a TV and a Playstation and had people come by and play with us. Nobody wanted to pick Dan, however i was the only one that could play him at maximum efficiency and a beatdown from Dan by me is a ton of giggles. Guys didnt get mad, they just were laughing at how goofy they were beaten. It was good times.
It should be noted that Hiroshi Matsumoto was the lead character designer for Street Fighter AND Art of Fighting. SNK wasn't ripping off Capcom, it was the same guy who just didn't have control over his self-created IP anymore, so he tweaked it slightly for his new project. That makes it even more spiteful and disrespectful that Dan was created.
If I were Data East. I would've at least make the game into *Bad Dudes II: Fighter's History* and *Bad Dudes III: Karnov's Revenge* to have Blade & Striker as the shoto-fighters instead of that wannabe-me Ray McDougal. Dan is my personal favorite character. Looking back its amazing that a character created as a joke, and is made to be a pathetic fighter, i feel this kind of character on paper could have been an annoying one and done character. I'm glad he stuck around.
A big point about Dan that makes him a bit meaner as a joke Is the fact that art of fighting was made by the guy who made SF1 after he left for snk because he wasn’t satisfied with where they were taking things at the time. It’s kind of interesting to look at as his background matches Keiji inafune’s eventual history with capcom. He left to make a spiritual successor to his own work.
As a kid, I always just saw him as a spoof of a young Steven Seagal, but it's just as funny knowing he's just a cheaply sandwiched amalgamation of Ryo and Robert. XD Something else to add to the Dan Hibiki Legend: Dan Hibiki and Joe Higashi were official team mates in the first Capcom vs SNK crossover. And cannonically, regardless of which team you play through in arcade mode, they wind up being the true winners of the entire tournament. While the team you play as is busy messing around with Geese, Joe and Dan just bypass them and win the tourney off screen. And if you play as those two, well, they just put Geese through a wall before they win, anyway. To top it off, if you see their personal pre-match interactions with each other in a versus match, it's obvious that Joe and Dan HATED each other! Hopefully you've tried out Dan in his official launch for SFV, by now. This seems to be his strongest iteration, yet! SAIKYO!
Maybe one day! I got tons of characters I would love to cover in these kinda vids, just they take so much longer to make than the normal style of video I have.
Back then they didn't want me NowI'mHot, they all on me! SNK and CAPCOM weren't on good terms back then as competitors. After business went south with SNK the first time around, Capcom agreed that it would be good marketing to make a cross-over game as it could help Capcom sales (to which it did) and Capcom Vs. SNK was born a hit. It was so successful, both companies flourished and agreed that as 2 aspiring Japanese development companies, setting aside differences to tackle the foreign market would benefit everyone, and Capcom Vs SNK 2 and SNK vs Capcom: Chaos was a critical success as a result, showcasing all of both stables in glorious fashion (Dan and Yuri have the best opening IMO). They wanted to try for something more, bit SNK went and suggested some funky things for Ryu as a costume and Capcom said the f-bomb (which is funny because that costume is now present in SFV). They went separate ways for a decade. Well SNK goes bankrupt right? But lots of their Fighting Game staff were already reputable to Capcoms fight game staff since they worked so closely together. I assure you now thatmany of SNK's fighting game staff is employed by Capcom because SNK host company has issues. SNK are of the likes of MetalSlug, Sukoden, as well as KoF and AoF. Capcom are of the likes of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, as well as their SF series and numerous Cross-overs like Tekken V, MvC, and survival horrors.
Where I live, Street Fighter 2 was never that big, but Art of Fighting and, eventually, The King of Fighters, oh my!!! Almost every little store, pharmacy, office materials store (I don't know the names in English, it's a little store where you can buy paper, pens, pencils, eraser, scissors, all that stuff) had one or two arcade machines with either Art of Fighting or the newest installment of KoF, even as back as 1994, but my personal favorite was Fatal Fury, and when KoF '96 changed dodging into rolling, I became a real fan, but I abandoned KoF's bandwagon in '98. My personal favorite still is '97, with a team made of Kensou, Yuri and Shermie (regular, not orochi Shermie), but when someone uses orochi Leona or Iori, to easily win, I'd use normal Leona, who, along with Kensou, allowed me to defeat those cheating players (not always, but usually enough). Oh, the memories! The 90s were the best.
It is sad to see you did not show Ryu and Robert how they originally were. Dan is not copying Ryo's short range fireball. He has a bad fireball because he sucks. Ryo's fireball was just fine
blankas real name isnt jimmy, blanka is charlie, charlie was put into a mutation machine built by m.bison, and then later on, in sfv you can see that when charlie comes back, hes still half himself and half blanka, therefore the reason charlie has the lightning attacks, because blanka had the lightning attacks, and therefore the reason charlie was in previous games, and blanka taking his place in the games he was missing from. this has been a known fact for years. if you dont believe this, your in denial.
how you going to ignore the Udon Comics? Also Street Fighter Assassin's Fist had placed Dan as Gouken's student before Ryu and Ken were. Not sure how canon either are, but still worth mentioning
Well I don't know every udon comic cause I haven't read them all, so not sure what specifically you are referring to there. In these kinda vids I try to hit the big important notes, most of the comics are not canon anyways.

SAIKYO!
Does Dan have the potential to be one of the strongest characters but he's just so weird and ridiculous it basically acts as a handicap for him?
considering outside of the basics dan trained himself for the most part, I think he's quite strong all things considered.
@@rooflemonger its like yamcha. Yamcha is treated as a joke but in general he is strong
More so hercule blade.
We need a video on Hakkan
Maybe one day! I got tons of characters I would love to cover in these kinda vids, just they take so much longer to make than the normal style of video I have.
Who cares about Hakan?
Don’t forget about Yuri in Dan’s character The a thumbs up that Dan does is one if Yuri’s Victory poses.
Capcom lost the case with data east, remember that data east made karate champ witch has a red and white karateka
Thanks for fr subtittles 🥰
Ah, yes, Dan Hibiki, my favorite Fortnite
what is forkknife
Dan Hibiki will always be a favorite of mine, and has been ever since he debuted!! It always feels good to win with him, I'm team hibiki for life😁😁
How about Pichu from Super Smash Bros. Melee & Ultimate next time?
Does pichu even have a story? heh
@@rooflemonger pokedex entries might work?
Back then they didn't want me
NowI'mHot, they all on me!
These are your best videos!!
My favourite SF character, so happy he made it to SFV. I hope he has his demon
OYAJIIIII!!!
That demon is his dad :(
*Ri*diculous? More like RADiculous!
I loved Dan. Cool 3-kick-move.
A surprise to be sure buy a welcome one
I main dan so when you lose to me you feel 20 times worse
Dan is the Yamcha of street fighter
Correction: Capcom lost the lawsuit on Data East's Fighter's History. Alpha1 Dan is the best Dan, more serious than his joke later iterations.
Dan comes from the JCVD movie double impact right ?
what's the game where one of Dan's moves is hitting the other person with... Dan on a stick...? seriously, that was an actual move in some game.
Nice info. tyvm
Boy, that's a unique way to pronounce Sakura. Is that how they pronounce it in the dub?
I have always felt he looked a bit like Steven Seagal.
Roshi was revealed for FighterZ. Thoughts?
It is sad to see you did not show Ryu and Robert how they originally were. Dan is not copying Ryo's short range fireball. He has a bad fireball because he sucks. Ryo's fireball was just fine
Turthfully i kinda like dan hibiki design, and his pink-ish karate gi is iconic, so capcom should thanks also to snk because of this case lol #ironic
I like playing as dan instead of ryu, ken, akuma, etc. it’s awesome playing as such a bad character.
Dan is a better martial artist than Sakura. He just does things his own way.
What does SNK stand for?
blankas real name isnt jimmy, blanka is charlie, charlie was put into a mutation machine built by m.bison, and then later on, in sfv you can see that when charlie comes back, hes still half himself and half blanka, therefore the reason charlie has the lightning attacks, because blanka had the lightning attacks, and therefore the reason charlie was in previous games, and blanka taking his place in the games he was missing from. this has been a known fact for years. if you dont believe this, your in denial.
yeah none of the stuff in the SF movie with jean claude is canon. Blanka is jimmy, as per the actual games.
how you going to ignore the Udon Comics? Also Street Fighter Assassin's Fist had placed Dan as Gouken's student before Ryu and Ken were. Not sure how canon either are, but still worth mentioning
Well I don't know every udon comic cause I haven't read them all, so not sure what specifically you are referring to there. In these kinda vids I try to hit the big important notes, most of the comics are not canon anyways.
