      How about buying the M1 macbook air, which is fanless, but plugging it into an external laptop fan stand, and then running high workloads? Would that be ok for longevity? This solution sounds like a budget middle ground between performance & heat minimisation, as such I was just wondering if I could get your opinion on this please?

      That’s why I buy macs, I only upgrade every 6-8 years, they’re a great investment. It’s easy for me to buy the upgraded ram and SSD options, despite the upfront cost, because it’s a better deal in the long run than replacing a cheap windows machine every 1.5 years. Plus they have great resale value, so if I ever want to upgrade early it’s basically 50-70% off a new one if I sell the old one.

    I just bought a M1 Macbook Air to replace my 10 years old Macbook Air. My 10 year old Macbook Air was still working great but I was using Big Sur at work and wanted it on my laptop. The number one rule in my opinion is to keep it away from liquids, to the extent of never leaving drinks right next to it and never pass drinks over it. I keep mine in a case when I'm not uisng it, and my next tip is very important on older macbooks and that is NEVER EVER use a third party charger, only use a genuine apple charger.

    A note on thermal performance and longevity. With the temps that these chips run at and thermal throttle at, (which is actually a bit different between the air and pro), you may get more performance out of the pro, especially for long hard workloads as the increased cooling will mean less throttling, but the passively colled macbook air will likely do better for longevity alone. The chip throttles at a lower temp, and it wont accumulate dust. Nor does it have any intakes to block or fans that can fail. Its thermal performance over time will likely be more consistent and doesnt require the user to maintain it by claning the internals. Generally means it should last longer and be less likely to fail, even to thermals because its limits are consitent, though you are obviously sacrificing some peak performance.

    • @SaifSKH
      @SaifSKH 2 года назад +9

      This is such a great point, while some people may regret not going for the Pro, the MacBook Air will definitely be a better choice for the long term when your device starts collecting dust and drops performance in a few years

    Good advice about keeping your machine safe. I've been doing the same for over 30 years and never had a mishap. Now that Microsoft has brought out a buggy Windows 11 with crazy installation requirements - none of our 5 machines can be upgraded and instead of replacing them all, we're going to keep them on Windows 10 as long as possible. As I go into retirement I'm now looking to get to an Apple for the first time - Macbook Pro M1 14". I saw a recent video how the Apple RISC performance has now outstripped Intel's CISC architecture - and significantly undercuts the power requirement which kills Wintel laptops. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

    9:34 - "Consider opening up the back chassis every 12 to 18 months to check and remove dust". I'm fairly sure doing this will void both the warranty and AppleCare+. A better solution is to invest in an in-room HEPA air filter. They run $100 USD or so and won't void your warranty.

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  3 года назад +14

      That definitely will not void the warranty or AppleCare. You know what ISN'T covered by warranty and (unless you pay a hefty out of warranty fee) AppleCare+? A failed fan or fried CPU due to build-up of dust. You can't have a HEPA filter in every room you use a laptop in.

    The more powerfull a computer you buy, the less its performance will *appear* to drop over time. Performance doesn't really drop perceptively on it's own. It's software changes that demand more performance over time that lead to this perception. Websites get more complicated, programs and OS updates demand more horsepower, but the computer's performance doesn't really degrade.

    Really useful video. Heat is a big problem on my 2017 Intel MBP and causes the screen to have problems. Avoid MBP with Touch Bar as this commonly fails -I've taped over mine because it flashes endlessly). My best advice is to try and spend as little money with Apple as you can get away with because if something fails then you are left with either an unrepairable paperweight or a hefty repair bill.

Just due to the age the battery got worn down and over time wear and tear took over to the point where my display cable tore due to poor design choice from apple now I’m trying to scrape together some cash for the m1 air. The cost for a new display is $500 if I put in a little more I can just get a new m1

    If you're really worried about storage or memory a few years down the road - you could always fly to Shenzhen and have one of the markets install a higher capacity module on it for a fraction of the cost of the part in North America.
    Not saying there's no risks associated with it, but I'm sure 5+ years down the road a 16GB or even 32GB module with a new storage module would breathe a new breath of life into it.
    I have a friend who purchased a 2TB memory module for his iPhone 11 Pro over there for $80 USD, and the flight cost him $300. And I'm sure he could save himself the flight by finding a reputable source/friend to ship it to and have them do it for you.

      I wouldn't bother using a silicon cover at all, they don't really do all that much. And definitely don't clean your keyboard every day, especially with isopropyl alcohol. Honestly you won't really notice the oil on the keyboard. Best cleanliness tip is never use your keyboard while eating, especially greasy stuff. If you keep your hands clean the keys will take a much longer time to get dirty and it also keeps crumbs etc off.

    In July 22 I directly switched from a MBP 2009 to an M1 Pro 21 and hopefully I can use it again for a decade. I'm sure, a Windows machine won't do it for 13 y.

    Tip for compressed air:
    DO NOT HOLD IT LIKE IN VIDEO! Always hold the can up. Hold it always at 90° or above. Do not point it down, because the liquid can come out, and damage the device that you're trying to clean. I actually forgot this myself, but luckily the liquid didn't do any damage. Stay safe!

    My 6 yr old Mac Air still keeps battery pretty well and I generally use higher screen brightness and play a lot of videos and games. I don't do burst charging but I do let it go down below 5% to get a workout.

    What happens if the screen cracks or flexgate happens, how am I going to make my MacBook "last forever"?

    • @GuillermoPaulman
      @GuillermoPaulman 3 года назад

      Exactly what happened to my previous MacBook Pro and exactly the reason I downgraded to a much older machine. Also, my old laptop that developed flexgate had 1 TB SSD which failed almost at the same time as the screen.

    Watch out for this! Bought a $2200 Macbook Pro last year, not even a year old. Unplugged charging cable, wanted to close lid slowly, cable was caught in between while closing, screen cracked at the corner and is now unusable (doesnt display anything anymore). Apple limited warranty doesn't cover it. Price to fix it here: over $1000, obviously not worth and now using it with an external monitor.

    Upgrading to 16GB and more storage almost doubles the price - I better buy the base model and keep the rest of the money - and upgrade more often. Macs are very easy to sell anyways, especially compared to other computers. Of course buying the base model only makes sense if your use case allows it.

    I’m still using my mid 2012 15” Macbook Pro Retina quite successfully. I even updated it to macOS Big Sur (using Patched-Sur) recently. Still chugging along nicely, but eager to upgrade to a new M? Powered 16” MBP when they are released. The only things I’ve ever done to the 2012 machine is upgrade the Wifi card to 802.11 AC so i can unlock it with my Apple Watch and I reapplied the thermal paste.

    15:27 Whenever anyone goes to an Apple store, they usually try to avoid repairing anything and basically force you to use the damaged product, or buy a new one. And then they charge a large sum only for disappointing the customer.

    I have a brand new 2019 mac mini i7 8 meg RAM 1TB SSD sealed, in it's box, in a drawer, in my studio to replace my ageing cheesegrater 2012 mac pro..thing is the old mac pro just isn't going to stop any time soon, sure I'm stuck on an older OS but who cares right, it works for me and runs all my audio software and external digital mixer. I have loads of old macs laying around my house that work flawlessly, I really look after my tech though, like obsessively keep them in perfect nic.

    mate, not having a fan eliminates a big enemy of longevity: dust. without a fan simply less dust gets in. if you don't believe me look at how well those first iPads still work. you can still find perfectly well working iPad 2s in peoples houses. but with fans, the system gets clogged with dust and overheats and dies eventually.

    im glad i followed some of your advice before i saw the video, i got the 2021 MBP 16" M1 max 32gb rm and 2 tb storage, should be overkill for me. when i ought my mid 2012 MBP i maxed out at 8gb ram and 1tb storage. ram was always enough and storage is between 60 and 70% after 12 years. stuck with catalina and apps starting not to work i need a new laptop 2021 MBP it was.

    How about replacing thermal paste? I was sold this “hack” by my local repair store, but can’t say I notice a difference. That being said, I did this in 2020 with a MB Air from 2014 and it was the first maintenance thing I ever did with it, so can’t complain.

    • @stardestroyer59

      its a good suggestion, although as you noted, some thermal paste holds up better than others. For my computer that was built in 2017, I had to replace the thermal paste in 2020 and it made it run cooler/smoother
