Synology's value is NOT in the hardware, but in the software and ease-of-use for the casual user.
I’ve had my 423+ for 6 months and love it. Main reason for the purchase was for the 4 bays and the inbuilt gpu
Need to remember most people who purchase these are home users so increase in network speed isn’t needed above 1Gbs

Honestly, the fact we still don't have the n100 chip on a Synology NAS is beyond me...
It would be OK if this device would be 350€ but it is actually closer to 500€... or even more...
Also... no 2.5gb lan
I was hoping for a Black Friday deal, to no avail...purchased one anyway and it's been great.
I have been using the 423+ since release in March and I have no issues at all, tho it is my first NAS I got, it is a very good one.
there is a space for improvements that needs to be done specially when it comes to its CPU but using it as a Plex server, I really didn't face any issue at all.

I've had a DS218+ for 4 years now, starting to look at a 4 bay upgrade a DS423+ would be an easy upgrade as I can just take the drives out of the old one and put them in the new one, but it sure has crappy "features" . The terramaster f4-423 is starting to look pretty good and more feature rich for less money. or possibly building my own with your JONSBO video. I think loading UNRAID onto a F4-423 seems like a really good option, and the cost of the 2 together comes out about even with the DS423+, but more capable nas.

yeah, with all these restrictions by synology i went with terramaster this black friday. 😂
i get to pick and choose what hdd and ssd drives and even 3rd party ram i can put in my system with their own black friday sales.
in comparison, much of synology's supported drives are definately not on sale or still way more money that other options per tb.
One mans ''restrictions'' are another mans simplicity and ease of use.
Waiting for the next 5 bay before I decide if to upgrade
ive had my DS423+ for a few weeks now but never owned another NAS so don't really have a reference point. I've found community support for custom dockers really good and considering i just use it primarily for Plex and the "arr" range of dockers, this has done everything i need. worth noting i literally ripped out my 6TB drive from a Seagate external hard drive and put it in... no issues, works brilliantly.

Once you have discovered plug-in network cards and using Synology as DAS - the goal posts move.
Where customers want to try Synology at a budget price and get used to configuring DSM - its okay

I just picked one up and is on the way. The amount of critical vulnerabilities the competition has in their hardware/software is insane and a little worrying. It's nice seeing that Synology actually has a bug bounty program as well. What good is the competition hardware if your data isn't safe? I don't plan on using this for Plex and purely backups. Not to mention the software for backups seems easy, straight forward and exactly what I need and want.

Nice review! I've been on the fence with the DS423+for a while now. However, with no type of sale for it not even for Black Friday, I don't think I'll spill $500 nickers for one. Might just get a 18 or 20T external hard drive on sale. The 923+ is even doing better on sale for $497! I think the sales were better on the first summer Prime day sales!

Yeah but the DS 923+ has only two cores which is worst for vms and docker also no iGPU so encoding is impossible. It depends on the use case but for me it‘s a downgrade rather than a upgrade

I had to replace my current DS216+ii and have now opted for the QNAP TS-664 due to Synology's poor hardware specs. A NAS is a long-term investment.
For QNAP Apps on your phone it is better than Synology Apps ?

Started out with a 10 TB Exos in an external case attached to a NUC as a Plex server. Moved to a DS720+ with 2 WD Red Pro 12 TB drives. Just finished moving all the movies and TV shows (I love Ken Burns) to a new DS423+ filled with 16 TB Exos, and finding that now after digging out all of my Blu Rays not yet ripped, I may need more space. *Sigh*
My DS423+ has certainly been worth it to me. I did just order a Chuwi N100 from Newegg, for only $135 with a 256gb sata ssd and 8 gb memory, I will try it out as a Plex server for my 4k collection. I will try it first as a Windows box, then as a Linux box. It does come with a Windows 11 home license, so I'll try that first. For the 1080p collection, my Synology has performed well. I just didn't realize how many movies I had, since in the past I either purchased with a digital copy included, or used the "disk to digital" on Vudu a LOT.
Damn, this decision is turning out to be a pain in the a$$! I want a NAS to store tons of photos, backup macOS and iOS devices, play existing DVD collection on my Apple TV 4K, all locally on WiFi. Synology makes it near impossible to decide! I have to choose a hobbled Intel NAS so it can transcode, even though I don’t know if I even need transcoding to watch a ripped dvd and Blu-ray on my Apple tv. I get the emphatic recommendation “get a 920+” or other discontinued NAS that are unavailable or sold at more than new used. Ugh.
Now, I resign myself to passing on a 923+ on sale for less money and buying a 423+ for full retail and I see I can’t even use an Ironwolf Pro drive on it without the likelihood of no warranty/support, and Synology stamping a damn warning in the OS.

FWIW I got a 423+ and use Toshiba N300 drives in there with no issue. My workflow is similar to yours, and I'm able to seamlessly rip blu rays onto the NAS, backup photos and run an OpenVPN.

In the same exact spot. I am not even over wifi I am connected but don't know if I really need transcoding or not. I am only streaming at home, so no accessing world wide. From everything I am seeing the 923+ would work fine without the transcoding. It has more connectivity and can be upgraded which seems to be more important then the Intel chip.
What is your recommendation for a Synology NAS that I would like to buy for my plex server/docker and VMM for Home Assistant?
I really think for most home users for Plex is going to be between the 923+ and the 423+ depends on if you are going world wide to get files or are just doing a home network. I think for the home network the upgradable 923+ with the AMD graphics is going to be fine unless you are streaming 4k Movies which neither will be great. I basically have old TV shows not on Apple TV and old blu Rays. Just IMO.

QNAP provides better hardware for the price but the software is trash compared to Synologys

How important is the intel intergraded graphics v. the AMD that you can't transcode. I am only doing home use for movies and older TV shows and data files. I don't need much but need enough to work well on Plex for the shows that I have only on DVD. Most of them are not even bluRay. I using plex. I do most of my other streaming with Apple TV.

I recall a discussion on reddit 12-18 months ago, about the same thing, and the poster said nobody would ever use 2.5GbE... But now its the standard for all the recent generation of mini PCs, becoming standard on motherboards, and 2.5GbE are much more affordable (a 5-port one can be had for less that £40), not to mention 2.5GbE USB NICs can be brought for a £10...
Anybody who says 2.5GbE isn't going to be a thing, are delusional and need to open their eyes... It already is, your just not paying attention, For anybody who says its not needed... your going to be pissed when your next laptop has it, and the NAS becomes a bottleneck.
