Hello. I'm on my path to modding the Dedica and would like to have some advise from you please. Have you pulled shots after installing the dimmer and how did it go? Would you recommend installing a dimmer or rather mod/replace the OPV in order to get a pressure closer to 9bar ?

Awesome, Tom! I installed a dimmer first on my Debica, inspired by your manometer mod. Then I installed the manometer as well! Starting this video and going to watch with interest! Mine are both “integrated“ in, with the manometer and a button (scroll wheel) showing on the left side of the machine. Looks almost stock! ❤

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Hi Tom! Yes, Im using something very similar, although mine is smaller and I just fit it inside the machine and just drilled a small hole for the button to pass outside. And right next to that, I have the manometer, same as your installation. Wish I could share a picture, but RUclips just deletes the comments if I add a link to a photo. :) I have been using that for about 3 weeks now, and have seen zero channeling as I start with a 3-4 bar preinfusion and as soon as the whole basket is covered with coffee I ramp up to as much pressure I want. You can also do 30 sek. blooming shots as well! Edit: my manometer is very stable, not fluctuating as his does on then video you shared. The regulator I have has 5kw capacity, and is on 220v 50hz.
Excellent video! I like that a grapgh of the voltage was provided. I wouldn't have expected less from an engineer :) I performed this on my Breville Barista Express and I use it to taper off pressure around 50% to 66% of the target yield. It results in a smoother shot and helps to accentuate the nuanced flavors of the bean. In a way, it mimicks the shot pulled from a lever machine.
I have seen people saying that after installing a dimmer on their espresso machine, they can make espresso with a much finer grind size compared to what they previously achieved without a dimmer. Is this logical? Thank you for the awesome content.
I did try adjusting the internal spring, but that didn't work very well. I haven't found an OPV that I can adapt to the high pressure lines of the Dedica just yet...

Hi! Your diagram is wrong. Voltage in the socket is from 320V to -320V. The 230V value is an effective voltage also known as RMS and it is not a peak of voltage.
Awesome Tom, I have watched almost all your videos. I have a DeLonghi EC220, I guess it's similar to the insides of the Stilosa, do you think that this cheap machine worth the pain to do this hack ?

Sorry, but I don't have a USA parts list. I know they're hard to find. Maybe someone else can chime in here? Same with the dimmer - you just have to search for one to your liking. Should be a simple one (not with a chip on board), and able to handle the wattage of the pump circuit.

For its price range, yes I would recommend it. It really depends on your market though. I have heard these are really expensive in some markets, like South America, Asia, etc.

It seems that I overcomplicated my dimmer implementation, I used a solid state voltage regulator controlled via a signal generator, I would love to share it with you and know your thoughts. I did choose this because of voltage spikes in the circuit due the pump being a inductive load.
@@DaddyMakesCoffee that was my first and foremost reason to do it this way, but It ended being a cumbersome implementation. Maybe I had the skills to make 3d models to print I would have made something better. I'll upload a video maybe.

Well, that remains to be seen. I don't know whether it will have an effect on the longevity. Essentially, truncating the time the pump gets voltage should just reduce the current that flows through it, but I don't know for sure. I think there are others that have had dimmers installed for quite some time without issue. Feel free to chime in with results, anyone. Cheers!
Infact the dimmer, simple as you mention which worked finally for you, is a potentiometer effecting voltage. We learnec at circuit 1 unit, V=R×I. Which means voltage and current will drop down as a result of higher resistance. That will affect pump in long run.
@@DaddyMakesCoffee as I’ve understood, you need to use a dimmer because a potentiometer won’t work for this pump (might have to do with staying over the voltage threshold). But that’s just what I’ve read, I haven’t tried it myself. That being said, a dimmer operates differently than a potentiometer. I wish I had a scope, so that I could check out the Signal.
Absolutely the dimmer is not equal to pot. I meant analog diammer which is pot base works. The first one, 100€ you bought, is digital dimmer. Because of that it didn't work. The triac used in analog pot base dimmer though cuts the AC sine wave signal, which cuts it into discrete sections, leading to well customized lower voltage output. Therefore, pump works on lower voltage anyway.

That's the safest way of controlling pump power rather than dimmer only. Longevity wise I am speaking.

Maybe you're grinding too fine? Otherwise, if you're using an aftermarket PF, it might not have just the right fit.

Lol, no sorry it won't work. The brew group is made for 51mm, and it's a very tight tolerance.

The reason first dimmer is not working in line, because that's a pulse based, digital output, dimmer. Or PWM type, not potentiometer type.

Problem was only the coffee beans because they weren’t fresh enough. So problem solved maybe a better could have helped as well.
Hi Tom. Any idea on how to fix my issue? The steam wand on my Dedica started to drip water while I brew espresso.
It could be that the steam valve is becoming leaky, a not unusual thing for espresso machines. Have you recently descaled?

It can, yes. I think in some cases it can smooth the shot out, and make it more balanced. But really it's more for experimenting.
