You are little harsh on combat. If you take skill u want to use ex. Long blade, have 50+ agility and dont spam attack button, you are gonna hit 70% your hits on lvl 1. Stamina is king i this game if u have full stamina u have +25% chance to do ANYTHING even speech or mercantile. If u have less than half you got -25% chance to hit or do anything. Also charge your attack you gonna hit really hard for less stamina :) nice video and great that you finally could play this game. Good luck ^^
Edit: also for convinient travel you also have spells/scrolls/enchaced items for almsivi/divine intervention and mark/recall. If u set mark for example in mages guild in balmora you can recall and take guild guide to other guilds or go to silt strider in few seconds. Be creative in morrowind u can go to amy place in 5 min if u master travel system. Also levitation, fortify atlethic, speed, jumps spell amd enhancments get the job done too :)

Actively doing my first playthrough of morrowind, and i will say that its mechanics are definitely janky by today’s standards but the LORE- the lore is amazing and so worth it, i swear every time i play i am in awe of the scenery. I've got about 210 hours so far and yeah the beginning of the game was a bit painful at times due to the fact you have to just pray to RNG, but once I got to level 10, that's when I genuinely started to fully enjoy the game and just could not stop playing it! I took a break for a few months and just started playing it again a couple days ago!

A few notes that I'm sure others have addressed:
    1. Really painful watching you swing your axes as fast as possible, not always at great fatigue. I hope you wouldn't do that with warhammers!
    2. Trainers can only train you up to their level in the skill. You have to find the extremely rare and well hidden master trainers to get to 100.
    3. Like Daggerfall Unity, Morrowind has OpenMW. A modern open source engine reimplementation. It runs way better, and it looks gorgeous. Turn the distant land up, the water shader with refraction on, the linear lighting and bloom, and install some volumetric clouds shaders, and boom! Gorgeous. Ground cover goes a long way too.
    4. OpenMW has multiplayer. Start a server! Play with your friends. It works great.

Used the Tamriel Rebuilt mod, and I pretty much went through the whole game before doing the modded areas, but it is just as good as I remembered it being. I don't really care if looks are crap by current gen standards, cause the game itself is just amazing, and really exemplifies the exploration, and discovery aspect of open world rpgs, and with no fast travel you are pretty much forced to explore.

That comment about fixing the combat, the best I can come up with is having a visible dodge animation play on dice roll with a cooldown (higher agi stat - lower cooldown, faster animation and higher dodge chance + higher dex stat to reduce the enemy dodge chance), a gradient blend between 2 different animations 1st being a sloppy and unprofessional style at 0 skill and 2nd being at 100 with a faster, tighter and much more refined animation. Use that instead of character skill & perk-based dmg stats and leave dmg stat entirely to weapons (material, refinement and enchantment). Then having flinch and stumble animations play based on body part hit and the severity based on Endurance stat

Actually, if you user magic it does not have a chance to miss. Instead, it has a chance of the spell failing to cast in the first place (which avoids the problem that what you see visually doesn't reflect what is happening). Also, you can use spellmaking to mitigate this problem by making a weaker spell that is more reliable. My first full playthrough was as a pure mage and I found that way more fun than warrior style.

A third option for combat that would be easier on the programmers but harder on the animators:
Add a second attack animation. On rolled hit, it plays the normal animation. On rolled miss, the weapon goes off noticably to one side. Then, rather than the player seeing their weapon go through their target, they see the weapon go off course. Probably still just as frustrating, but at least there's visual feedback rather than just a sound cue.

YES! Thank you! You totally understood what I was going for! Yeah it would all be a ton of extra work but I truly believe something like extra animations like that would REALLY polish up the combat experience.
You still get the Morrowind combat but now you're getting extra visual feedback. It would eliminate everybody who points and laughs because "I'm clearly hitting the enemy without hitting the enemy".
I think a lot of people who watched this thought I just hated the entire combat system in Morrowind. Thank you for understanding!

Honestly Lycan, this was one of the shortest but yet accurate review/retrospective Morrowind videos i have seen.
All points are spot on and and well explained. The game is "broken" and for that reason alone TES games are everyone's favorite because of all stories of things bugging out and glitching and God knows what else, sharing experiences and CH builds. How many Easter-eggs there is in this game, how many hidden things unexplored to this date??? If we had Morrowind convention for about 7 days we wouldn't finish talking about it and laugh about it!
Sometimes i wonder, is it possible they were making these games buggy on purpose. I mean you can teach a monkey to write a novel but one company cant learn on their mistakes..?

@@LycaniteTV Warning: Wall-o-Text below! (yeah i escalated a little, lol)
"The Cliffracer menace must be dealt with, at all costs!"
-Jiub before becoming a saint probably (Also spoilers down below for others, who might not have played Dawnguard DLC entirely)
You know, the cliffracers are anooying as hell, but in the end i really like that they finally got wiped out for good in the lore.
I really loved that they gave Jiub *OUT OF ALL THE CHARACTERS IN THIS FRANCHISE* this task of slaying every cliffracer in Morrowind.
You know, i had some sort of personal fictional fantasy story written a long time ago, even before Skyrim came out.
In it, i made my main character into the Nerevarine, basically following Morrowind's main story and Jiub was his companion, his trustworthy friend.
Then after the Morrowind story i moved on and that meant off to Middle earth (yes that fantasy story was really bizarre and all over the place, i even had many elements from Warcraft in it).
And in Middle earth Jiub followed my main character all the way up to Minas Tirith and the great battle. That's where i gave Jiub a warriors death. Dying honorably in battle against the evil forces of Mordor (He got stomped by a whole platoon of those armored battle trolls).
And then Skyrim came out. With Dawnguard. The first thing i noticed was his voice, i'd always recognize that voice, so iconic from Morrowind's beginning.
I don't feel ashamed to admit it, i cried a lot. A lot of manly tears. Not only did they gave Jiub a comeback, but god damn what a comeback into the story this was!
By far, for me personally the absolute best moment in any Elder Scrolls game. I loved his background story, this was better than my stupid fictional warriors death ending for him.
And even though cliffracers are annoying as hell, this is also another thought that comes to my mind everytime. For me as a lore nerd this really is a comforting thought.

Ironically, I got Morrowind for free, without knowing anything about it whatsoever, as part of a package of random games included with my purchase, when I bought my first PC in 2003.
By the way, my personal take on the Nerevarine Prophecies is that Azura made the whole thing up. She needed a competent hero, to do her dirty work, defeat Dagoth Ur, expose the Tribunal, and destroy the Heart of Lorkan - so she made a prophecy describing the kind of hero she would need, what challenges that hero would have to overcome to prove their competence, and the stipulation that the person needed to be recognized as the Nerevarine to unite the Dunmer houses and Ashlander clans. Then she passed those prophecies to her loyal followers, knowing they would eagerly kill themselves in their desperate attempt to fulfill those prophecies, until one hero emerged capable of doing the tasks she required.
In short, Azura's "prophecy" of the Nerevarine, was basically just a job description. Your character isn't really the reincarnation of Lord Nerevar - you were just the person who happened to meet the requirements to complete Azura's job.

I dislike the combat changes that you suggest.
Both Oblivion and Skyrim already has the "every swing hits and damage is modified by skill level" version. They even have unlockable perks (which are fun!).
The question is - do I prefer these "modern" systems over Morrowinds combat?
    No, I don't!
It is true, that combat in Morrowind is "dice based", but it is not to difficult to understand using common sense:
    - higher weapon skill => better chance to hit
    - higher agility attribute => better chance to hit
    - higher luck attribute => slightly better chance to hit
    - if your character is well rested (stamina bar is full), they have a significantly higher chance to hit
    - if your character is exhausted (stamina bar is low), they have a much harder time hitting stuff
    - there are also other modifiers, like the warrior sign that gives you a flat +10% chance to hit (which is not insignificant, but falls of when you max your skill, since getting above 100% to-Hit is meaningless)
So, here are my 5 reasons, why I like this system better:
    1) Your character class/race/skill choices matter - starting as a warrior makes you very proficient at combat
    2) On paper skill progression seems to have little impact, the actual experience is different. Because of the miss mechanic - getting less misses when your skills improve feels much more impactful than getting +10% damage would in the later games
    3) "Me" vs "My Character" argument - if my character is bad at combat, I would like to see it reflected in game - the dice based system is perfect for that
    4) The feeling of using an amazing weapon while being bad at it. In Skyrim or Oblivion you hit each time dealing almost no damage vs in Morrowind you will miss most hits, but when your attack connects the enemy will sometimes lose half of their heath
    5) In end game, when you have maxed your skill - you will always hit and you drop most enemies with one hit (using the amazing artifact weapons Morrowind has), which is much faster then Skyrim or Oblivion.
There is also the argument that Oblivion and Skyrim are more player skill based, since you as a player decides how the combat goes.
    - just because you hit at every swing, does not mean the combat is player skill base
    - while sadly the to-hit combat modifiers you had in Daggerfall to directional attacks are gone, you still have option for directional attacks (if you turn always use best attack off). Since these are triggered my the movement key + attack combo you have a lot of influence how you attack. Note that most of this is just how much damage you deal, but for some weapons animation speeds might also be different.
    - There is also the weaving in and out of combat approach which works best with high speed attribute and enables you to move in quickly hit the enemy and move out before they can hit you. Since most weapons have different ranges, you can also exploit that - using a spear while moving back keeps the enemy at bay.
    - if you have high enough weapon skill and agility, you will not miss and hitting on every swing as a non-combat type character feels immersion breaking
Finally I would like to suggest a third option, you missed:
A lot of people dislike the combat because the information/feedback is not represented well enough visually:
"This is bulls$@t! My weapon clearly connected, why did I deal no damage?!"
If the game would have presented a better feedback on what is happening, players would have a much easier time immersing themselves in combat.
    What do we need?
    - add new animations to represent combat better - dodge, parry, glancing blow, various hit animations (hitting hand, legs, face, body..), critical hit animations
    - allow weapons to clash and have various outcomes - like feints or even grappling - if we want to also improve the hand-to-hand options
most of this would obviously be skill based, but players should get some options similarly how the directional attack system works (or have a utilize best combo option for people who do not want to bother with combat, and let their characters and their skills do most of the fighting - the can still enjoy the nice animations)
    - have matching sounds and audio ques to support the system (parry sounds, glancing blow sounds, various hit sounds, shuffling and dodging sounds... etc)
    - upgrade the AI to utilize the system by using the animation and utilize moving in combat better
Would this be easy to implement? Of course not. But it would keep the RPG system and offer a visualization that most people used to modern games could accept.

The game actually has aged very well, considering the fundamental gameplay is the same as Skyrim’s. Because of its age, it asks more from the player and their imagination (think: Morrowind slow travel speed, no fast travel, no quest waypoint and static NPC’s VS Oblivion/Skyrim fast travel + NPC dynamic lives). Morrowind asks the player to imagine the lives of the NPC’s whereas Skyrim doesn’t. Morrowind asks the player to imagine the woes and whims, up’s and down’s - the drama - of dice-roll combat. What it lacks, it makes up for in engrossing the player in a world they are forced to engage in to progress the story. Such as readable dialogue which is more in-depth than the voice acting of future games. These trade-offs are why people look at Morrowind as the ultimate role-playing TES.
At the core of the three modern games is the same experience. Barring some quality of life and changes to combat, etc.
Morrowind really is just a barebones Skyrim (not in lore, or storytelling, etc. but in general gameplay experience).
By the way, bravo on the videos. I’ve been eating them up!

I feel like the point of Morrowind is discovering how to exploit the magic system. Hell I had my own little ideas 20 years ago on how to play the game. I look it up later and realized I was only scratching the surface. My go to move was to play an Imperial and use my daily voice of the Emperor.... to help me pick fist fights. Cause if you taunt someone you are free to punch them out and loot them. Hell that helps with some of the faction quests too. Like where the Warrior guild wants you to kill people in Thieves guild.. Well if instead of attacking the thieves you call them names you are free to murder them in self defense.

As for combat there are mods. I recommend Better Balanced Combat. It turns the combat into an action based combat system instead of dice rolls. What's different about Better Balanced Combat is that it also makes many other changes under the hood to make the game more compatible with such a combat system. Many inferior mods just take away the dice roll and make it 100% to hit. But the game was not designed with this in mind so it in turn creates many problems. B.B.C. addressed these issues to the best of it's ability to make a more modern combat feel.

Ah morrowind: Fantastic lore, character build, sense of wonder and the best main quest bethesda made (so far). The only three things i always criticized Morrowind is that it has some pretty weak character writing (it never was Bethesda strong point to say the truth), the thief skills were pretty underwhelming (and broken/useless in the case of trying to pickpocket someone or using speechcraft) and that the game could explain the mechanics and the math of it all a little better. Even the old OG manual barely explained how important fatigue was for all the things you did, today we have many wikis and a lot of resources in the internet at least.

      - Corprus isn't deadly. It's fucking terrible to catch, but it's not deadly - it, in fact, makes you functionally immortal, which is part of why it sucks so much. IIRC, Divayth Fyr makes mention that it might not be a disease, but a divine blessing that's too powerful for the human (and meric) body to handle.
      - The Thieves Guild probably didn't let you join because you did the Code Book quest for Eydis Fire-Eye in the Fighter's Guild. It's one of a couple quests for the Fighters that cut you off from the Thieves Guild, the other being the one where you kill all the Thieves Guild bosses for the Fighters Guild guildmaster, assuming you don't kill him first for Percius Mercius.

To be obnoxiously padantic, "radiant questing" is random quest generation with a particular (rudimentary) AI spin. It's so named because it ties into the Radiant AI system that Bethesda developed to handle NPC behavior patterns (before promptly minimizing it to almost-insignificance because the AI patterns led to far too much random madness over the course of a playthrough). Radiant questing is INTENDED to direct you specifically to locations you've never been to, on top of providing some repeatable things to do so that you're not limited to just mindlessly grinding dungeons for loot or some such. That, in itself, is fine.
The issue is that Bethesda never seems to have the time during development to really expand on the idea, so the Radiant Quests in Skyrim end up feeling a lot like the ones in Daggerfall. It's far more interesting in, say, Skyrim's "Missives," mod, which is transparently just a randomly-generated job-board system that re-integrates Daggerfall's time limits for jobs. But even that is a minor fix. If more time were put in, it would be possible to make radiant quests that are much more complex and reactive (indeed, Daggerfall did try to do something like that with certain quests, though they tended to be the buggy ones in the OG game) and a re-implementation of the old faction-system idea would make it much more interesting to puzzle your way through.
    *sigh* A guy can dream...

Please at least cover Bloodmoon. Tribunal would be nice but people generally agree it's "meh." I like tribunal for role-playing purposes but not much else. Bloodmoon on the other hand, 10/10 easily.
