Definitely insulate! It was 10C one day and our empty un-insulated 14x7 was over 25c inside. my 22x7 insulated office trailer was actually colder than outside. Helps deaden sounds as well and wind etc. Diesel heater is the way to go. and Apartment AC 5,000 BTU works best.

Nice trailer for a first-timer. I also just bought an Interstate 6x12....the FIRST thing I did was remove all wall panels and insulate it...I also did the ceiling. I plan on gluing or screwing
thick styrofoam sheets under the trailer and add some type of membrane. To me, that was your only mistake. I also used a room air conditioner which was mounted on a back wall.

OK looks good for your first effort. A couple things to help you out: I know you wanted to go cheap but, as the old saying goes, you DO get what you pay for. The best trailer out here is a NEO aluminum. They do cost more but they are built much much better and weigh a lot less than steel and it wont rust. The best axle suspension is not leaf springs, it is the Dexter Torsion axle. Always insulate your metal box. We used sheep's wool. Havelock Wool is the best insulation for this as it battles moisture as well as insulates and it is VOC free. You want to go as VOC free as possible because you are putting your family in a very small environment. Any off gassing that happens in a home from ply wood for example which would be formaldehyde, is intensified in a small cargo trailer. Just a couple of thoughts for you my friend. Good job enjoy your family.

    • @mayaflynnster
      @mayaflynnster 3 года назад +2

Thank you for the info on insulation. Off gassing is definitely bad in a small area so I appreciate that attention to detail. Also...I do believe he has a Dexter axle since they all come with one in that model. I just purchased a 5 X 8 and it told me all about dexter's famous axle (lol) on every page...and all the stapled-on mini billboards all over the inside. And of course, your right, aluminum is best(didn't need me to say so, of course).

    • @ronblack45

to help with suspension, the way i did it, was, remove all the leaf s but leave the bottom on, install air bags, remember to buy only AIR RIDE LIFT, AIR BAGS, I INSTALL THE 7500# UNITS,. ALSO I ADDED SHOCKS TO SUPPORT THE BOUNCE. MY TRAILERS IS 8' WIDE TANDOM AXLES 16' LONG AND 7' TALL. SUPPORT WEIGHT IS 4000#, NET WEIGHT, GROSS 7000# . THERE'S 2 SHOCKS FACING FORWARD 2, FACING REAR. THE RIDE IS THE SAME AS IN A CADILLAC , SMOOTH. a couple of things to install, the ac/heater not what see ???, i installed a ac on top 13000btu;s, and for the heating of the room , on the beds each one has there own electric blankets, the walls and ceiling , and floors are heavy insulation, ceiling and floors r-60, and walls r-30. the average temperture during weather or snow it s still 55 degs, inside, the electric blankets run on 4each 6 volt batteries, in series with invertor for the conversion from 12vlots to 120v. note 12volts batteries, if they go below 10.8 volts there toasted , 6 volt batteries in series make up the 12lots and they can go down to 3.8vlots and still recover. solar panels a must, min. 2 0r 3 at 200 watts each. for more info feel free to contact me at email: tonymiho777@gmail.com or call me , 424 210 1312, tony.

Just to start off. I looked at this video for ideas. You got really good ideas and your presentation I think is great. That brings me to the explanation of temp and don't matter where you live. I would consider a few things that I believe will advance you on cost in the field and maybe longer stay. Your AC power on good path. Add the DC and don't be scared to add solar to that roof. I will add a channel, you may watch but you should check out. Don't be alarmed if you cut the vent or max air in the roof. That trailer is the best in roof design and will be just fine just use caution and ask around for more ideas. The thing I really like first is that trailer. Second those cabinets or pretty Bad to the bone it looks like. I will be checking those out. I like that fridge to. I am like you though, I don't know enough about that A/C heater you got there from Black and Decker. Good job, great choice on trailer. Go look At
Gonagain on you tube. He and his wife have lots of tricks, tips, and builds. Now we all design to fit our family or likings but I think you can add the roof insulation and floor insulation as he did on his. That will help A whole LOt. Seriously. Great presentation.

Nice video on your Conversion. 2 years have passed since this video. Did you make any changes. I would have definately add insulation. Styrofoam panels can be cut for roof easily. It deadens the noise from rain or anything also. I hope you figured out your water carrier for your sink. 5 gal. For maybe 1 day. I take 20 gal. For a weekend. Also last question. I know you didnt want a vent on roof but they can be done right with out leaking unless it is accidentally left open. You need ventilation in those trailers. I didn't see any windows on your trailer. I know you mentioned the beauty of nature and where you camp. Windows are important not only for light and air movement, but as an escape if need be. We had a tree after a storm fall on a persons vehicle just missing hitting the camper, but where it landed, the camper door was not able to be opened, it was blocked. Definately put a window or 2. Thanks, hope your enjoying the camper.

I can solve your insulation problem. I’ll let you were a little secret. That top rail that your wife painted if you pull it off around the perimeter of the ceiling it exposes 3 inches in between each day which are 16 on center. Go to OfficeMax and buy the giant bags of packing peanuts and fill in all those days the best you can from anywhere you can. @@4x2WagonFamily Is all ok my friend. You have given me some good tips based on your observations. I recently purchased a 6x10 cargo trailer similar to your. I think I will leave the rooftop alone without opening any holes :) You are doing a great job and thank you for the tips! Keep it simple. I have watched a couple of German guys who have done an outstanding job with their trailers, they tend to be practical and have different ways in designing the interior of their trailers. Here in the USA people are conditioned to bring all the commodities they are used to inside their trailer, adding a ton of weight in the end. Light is better with just the essentials is the best and you save money too. I highly recommend you to watch those Germans! Good luck to you and your wonderful family. 👍

What!? No windows? What about air circulating. How can anyone sleep without air? I would feel like I was suffocating and claustrophobic.

I’d be nervous inside of the trailer while parked on the street. Too many drivers not paying attention

@@4x2WagonFamily I would like to get a 8x5. I wonder if I could get an interstate 8x5 with suspension and an RV door. I tried contacting them but they don't seem to want to be bothered.

To avoid getting locked in, please change your lock to an RV lock

Thank you. I do have an rv lock. I just need to remove the original latch. Good point btw👍🏼

@@4x2WagonFamily If you put an additional lock (on the opposite side from the door) you can lock the original lock open, that would allow you to keep the more secure lock without the risk of someone looking you in.

I would send a picture if allowed, but basically you could keep both locks without running the risk of being locked in because the original lock could be locked in the open position by adding an latch (like the one where the padlock goes) but on the opposite side. If I didn't explain it well enough please let me know, but I would not remove the original lock.

The only thing to be careful with when you have a single axle trailer is having a tire blowout at highway speeds. Pay close attention to tire condition and pressure as well as axle bearings being well greased. Also the leaf springs are subject to breaking so I always carry a spare and have practiced changing it. If you're boondocking when one breaks it can be very expensive to have it towed. Your build looks great.
