- Here is an ideal add-on to the Chameleon MPAS 2.0 antenna, adding 2 meters and 70cm to your total communications kit, or if used by itself on your own 3/8 x 24 threaded mount you can have a stealthy advantage over a typical handheld rubber duckie antenna for repeaters or APRS.

Eric I am a 61 year old man. I have been interested in ham radio for years and after watching you videos I now have my study book. Wish me luck and thanks
Good luck my friend.. take your time
That add-on is pretty sweet! I tell you that antenna you can honestly hide it pretty well behind a tree like y'all did. Keep the content coming Eric! 73
Thanks Eric, great info for us in HOA's, 73's de KX4QV
Great video! Just may do this. Easy-peasy for this old man!
These videos are outstanding
I live in a high rise and cannot put up an antenna out the window. I knew that gong in but there were other benefits to the high rise. I do not do HF anyway so it was not a loss to me. But I get out plenty on DMR and D-Star, and C4FM. I talk to people all over the world and am enjoying the hobby. My brother is in another HOA and does HF with indoor Loop antennas.
Greeting Eric. Just ordered the Chameleon DB from GigaParts. 73, W1RKB
My MPA 2.0 is coming on Wednesday. I think I’ll be ordering the 2m/70cm shortly. Testing of the MPAS on HF will commence on Thursday!
I live in a HOA and I have a vertical dipole mounted to my roof on an old satellite dish mount. They damn well better NOT say anything to me about it as I have multiple neighbors who are currently in "violation" of HOA ordinances in one way or the other which the HOA seems to have no issue with. I am clearing out my back yard to put in an Inverted V this Summer.
Shoot. I was reading through our "rules" and every blinking house here is in violation.... Why? You can see every AC unit/ gas pack from the street, which is forbidden according to the rules, so I'm staying low profile anyhow (gotta keep the wife happy after all), but I'll check grid and fire for effect if any neighbors start whining.
Another nice video. What type of coax are using for VHF/UHF? Thx.
My concern is the placement of the 259 on the back of the box instead of the bottom. Added strain to your coax at the connector and on your mast.
Great idea, but seems like the box could have been made a lot more compact.
It's just an off the shelf weatherproof electrical box with some holes drilled in it. They come in various sizes.
These antennas are currently on clearance at DX Engineering.
Very nice little V/UHF setup, I wonder how much Power it can handle as I wanna try using it for 2m on my IC746
DE WZ9O
Claire Durgan 100 watts
That better be a damn good antenna for the price that are asking for it.
It is well worth it... Solid build... I couldn't ask for anything more if I can work the world with 20 watts on my Xiegu... Very compact
You can't utilize the additional extension to get more height with the VHF add-on?
Any thoughts on why this Chameleon MPAS is only rated at 50w CW? Most HF radios seem to be 100w.
Nice antenna and radio setup what's the name of that case.
Hi. Im getting into radio since the bombing in Nashville on Xmas. We were out of communication for 3 days. I live in a HOA and was wondering if i pplace that chameleon antenna behind a Tree Will i lose signal
6:15 Is the "swr flat" because you are running it through a long piece of lossy coax?
Hi Eric, I guess the tube pointed me your way when I was looking at radio restoration video's and figured out we are in the same town. Similar interest's, PM me
Hello Eric, I love your content and just wanted to let you know the IC-706MKIIG cannot measure SWR on VHF/UHF.
A friend of mine told me the same thing.
OK, I stand corrected.. I would still assume the manufacturer got it tuned within useable range but without my analyzer with me I guess I cannot prove it
I, too, would believe that a manufacturer with their reputation would have it properly turned. Anyways, keep up the awesome content! 7 3 de KN6COT
Eric, Will this antenna withstand the Western NY weather if I mount it permanently in my back yard?
Not much will. You need to put the NOALox grease on it. 73 from Cheektowaga, NY.
I'm wondering how the "Spider" compares to the MFJ Octopus overall since you've now used both. The MFJ Octopus gets a lot of criticism for being more than a little fragile.
Good idea. I think I'll make one and save $90.
Have you tried the Wolf River Coils Silver Bullet for HF? If so, how does it compare?
Have not tried them yet.
Super video!! Thanks for sharing!! De kb0slc
Ya need to design and build a fiberglass palm tree antenna and put it in the yard by the others. Lol. If it's realistic enough if no-one is looking for it they will never know. Hiding something in plain sight is the best place 🤘
A 432MHZ Slim-Jim antenna is very compact it should be possible to make a Slim-Jim antenna for 1296MHZ
If you could talk the HOA in to letting you put a flag pole in the yard and fly the associations colors or logo, hidden antennas inside the flag pole as long as it's some kind of composite. That would be kind of hilarious to be the only one to know the flag pole is not just to mast a flag or the whole reason for it's existence. Getting one over on the HOA would be satisfying as hell.
Great video many thanks 2e0ree ==73
Speaking of winlink, do you have any videos in how to set up a winlink station? Thanks!
I think I have a video of operating Winlink on VHF
HamRadioConcepts Thanks!
The key factor here especially this upcoming weekend is the capability for horizontally polarized for SSB on 2m and 70 cm. That is a bargain for that capability.
I have had a great idea. If any of your neighbours grass you up for having a stealth antenna. Try tying them to the top of the tree during a thunderstorm. .
What that place needs is a Yagi 80mtr antenna on top of that roof, give them something to talk about. 30 seconds of fame. I'm sure they wouldn't even notice a 2mtr whip antenna sticking out the top of a tree (if black or grey) and a ground plane hanging down like a dipole. Dig the co-ax in during the night and I bet no one notices.
If i were in a HOA, it would be a very late at night escape.
Guessing this got discontinued now
I live next door, and I'm tellin. LOL.
9:29 It was deaf because your line loss at that frequency is super high
Be Great for hamsticks
I like the HF antenna but this... there are other antenna out there that do better AND still have a stud mount. This appears to be a throw-away product just to see who’d buy it.
I dont understand "throw-away product" it is very well built, and I have had nothing but good luck with it.
HamRadioConcepts - throw-away as in rushed to production. It doesn’t seem to be as an elegant solution as the rest of their line. I’m sure it works. It just was disappointing when seeing the inside.
@@daverhodes7235 Oh, I see, first I replied thinking the comment was meant towards the MPAS kit, but I can see your point. I think their idea was solid but not needing to be intricate, I mean, it could have been made very cheaply and asked the same amount of money.. It is solid, but it is also a simple design, and I figured people would want to know what was inside so I opened it... For me, I think having this would be a bonus just for digital modes like APRS and Winlink when out in the field, I probably wouldnt end up using it for any FM or repeater work...
Good video, but I wish hams would learn about simple RF theory and make more of their own stuff; isn't that the point of amateur radio? In the past, many innovations came from the amateur community. Now, we buy a pre-made box with a connector and some screws and then marvel over the build quality of such a device.
So from what I can tell, it's just slightly better than a rubber duck...
that would stick out like a clown in church at my condo, definitely not what I would call "hidden"
Horizontal? Why..
What is an HOA to the uninitiated guys?
Home Owners Association, they restrict your ability to have any kind of antennas outside, you cant do what you want without permission such as paint your house a different color, remove the trees, ect.
@@HamRadioConcepts And I would have to be homeless to even think about living where I was under the thumb of an uptight neighbor. I am sure it is right for some people, and glad they accept and like those rules. Just not for me to be told when to mow my lawn.
@@HamRadioConcepts I see. Here in England, the worst place to be for radio is in a National Trust property. You can't even put up a TV antenna in one of these places because they want it looking all picture postcard quaint.
I'm pretty sure you don't have to hide your antenna if you set up for the day/afternoon and then just take it down when finished.... Or take down after a weekend. Even Florida HOA's (they have to be the worst in the nation) can't say crap about short term stuff. And then for longer term, just camouflage it in a tree, etc. I can appreciate an HOA protecting you property values from who-knows-what stuff that happens in outlying areas, but I'll be damned if anyone is gonna bitch about what I do in the afternoon or whenever.
at 9:20.... something WAS reacting. The 50' coax has a CMC choke (what you called a sausage in another video). If you read the fine print, i bet you'll see it's designed not to pass rf below 1.8 MHz, or above 30 MHz. Just a thought. vy 73, and thanks for the great vids.
Yes, so then I think they need to change their kit and either add a removable choke when using VHF UHF or possible add another seperate coax for the higher bands, right?
Not an add on kit, but, a either or kit.
Do you have an email address? I am going for my tech license and I'd like to pick your brain about a radio purchase.
use mini 8u. rg-58 is crap
Yah, the coax that comes with the MPAS is rg58 and I need to email them and tell them now that there is a VHF UHF kit that can be used with it, they should upgrade the coax. For those who dont use the VHF UHF kit then the included rg58 will be OK..
If you can't go anywhere to eat, why not learn to COOK dude
jimmy gray hey DUDE I ran a fukn restaurant for 9 years I can cook things you haven’t even heard of. I’m talking about your moronic neighbors and friends that are panicking that they can’t go out to eat. Any other questions?
@@HamRadioConcepts what happened to the restaurant?
If you were making a general statement so was i.
jimmy gray restaurant kept going after I left. I went on to be a technician for Florida public safety radio system and law enforcement radio .
@@HamRadioConcepts man, now that's a cool job.
