  • Electrics have become thoroughly politicized. It's Red versus Blue, conservatives versus liberals, ICE versus EV. Political consultant Mike Murphy wants to break through the politics. He's a conservative Republican who is pro-EV and has some great insight, backed up by polling, on how to sell EVs to people who hate them. Better still, he's hilarious.

I’m a Republican and I love my EV’s. The main purpose for EV’s is to not burn the fuel in the first place. They don’t work for everyone. They been selling them wrong since the beginning. Stop telling them that they have to buy them or they’ll be walking. They are simply better cars for everyday driving. Smoother and quieter. Next to no maintenance. A little harder on tires.

Harry's garage proves even the most die hard green advocates find evs to be an inconvenience. Harry is a car Enthusiast who is so obsessed with being green that he has his own solar farm his own windmill, generates all of his own power and has fuel that is 100% renewable. He's far more obsessed with this than any of you guys are and get even he still went back to running a plug-in Range Rover rather than an electric vehicle. I'm just tired of people politicizing things that aren't political.

Now depending what class of driver you fall under (not you specifically) which is where I fall, the driving dynamics of a Model 3 which is probably the so-called "sportiest" mass market EV you can get, is nothing I'd call inspiring or sporty and I am leaving straight line acceleration out of this sporty definition since EVs just inherently are fast off the line and to 60.

The system paid for itself after 5 1/2 years. Since I produce more than 100% of my electric use over the course of the year I could make the argument that I’m getting power for free - it’s even better than that since I make a few hundred dollars a year selling surplus production back to the utility. You also must have to include a Hybrid as a family car. To convert from gas to 100% E.V., option you have to include Hybrid. It is great for transiioning. It serves best for a vehicle for family long distance traveling. If you have an E.V. you must have your own charger at home. Homeowners will overcome the range anxiety and achieve the biggest savings with there own charging system. Dealers must sell level ll E.V. chargers with every electric car purchase to overcome range anxiety. With a vehicle with 300 mile charge the average family without towing will be able to use that E. V. within a 125 - 150 mile radius from there home easily!!!! Savings will be huge per year. $2-$3k will be added discretionary income with just gas car savings in CA. Legacy auto makers cannot produce EV's profitably at scale so are pivoting to hybridizing most of their models to meet lower emission requirements and to qualify for Federal EV incentives. Consumers are paying more for the hybrids than they will ever realize in gas savings. Legacy auto has backed off EV's until 'the market develops', leaving the door open for Tesla and the Chinese.

Ford said it lost an estimated $36,000 on each of the 36,000 EVs it delivered to dealers in the third quarter. Other say 2X that. Your purchase cost Ford money. I don't know how I feel about that. Would that Ford had used it's A Team to design the car they called the mach e. EVs were supposed to be easy and less unimportant. They built a car that would never ramp to profitability. Story is that the project was originally called explorer but Ford did not think they would sell enough so turned it into a sort of Mustang. A vehicle that can power your home in a black out and charge tools when working at a remote site and can act as an air-conditioned refuge during a blizzard or heat wave. EVs are already so cheap to run they work out the same or cheaper than an ICE equivalent plus you can sleep in them with the windows up so you don't get eaten alive with bugs. It is sad EV has been a political football when it is a logical choice. Manufacturing has been on a 50 year slide, pollution is real, and so many other reasons switching the US to EVs is a benefit for the nation. We need the change, it is not something nice to do, but so much of the future, economic security and national security is helped by having a mostly EV market.
I love cars. muscle cars, classic era cars, exotic cars, etc. There is a certain character, experience, kind of an automotive theater, that can be exciting and fun. For day-to-day living, just need something that gets me from point A to point B. Having something that is quiet, can be "refuled" at home, less maintenance, and cheaper to operate, is a nice thing to have and as a benefit it helps the nation.
The hardcore anit-EV crowd is tiny. It is the mainstream buyers who do not like to be inconvenienced that are the biggest chunk of buyers. While ICE vehicles catch fire, can have under 300 miles of range, there is not a gas station everywhere, and when ICE vehicles were new, they were expensive and had a whole ton of issues at time when horses were what the masses were using, the change happened. Eventually horses became a more expensive and more hassle transport option. This is where we are heading ICE to EV. Five years ago, few EVs had over 200 miles of range, generally prices were very high, and charging stations were rare to find. Now there are many EV options with over 200 miles of range, prices are much very close to ICE before tax credits/rebates. and charging station locations have increased massively.
I hope next year, the Autoline team does a twenty year review of ICE versus EV to show the progress made. The pace of improvement of ICE is very limited, mostly because it is a very mature tech thanks to a century of high R&D funding. EVs on the other hand would get small spurts of R&D funding. The EV1 got great funding for a short period of time and then got shutdown by GM. It is thanks to personal portable electronics that batteries got the kind of R&D funding to push that tech forward that gave new life to EVs. Now we see large EV R&D budgets and because the tech was under developed, we are seeing rapid improvements. Remove the hate glasses and just view EV logically and the pattern is clear. China is going to own the world if we keep letting stupid political games keep us from doing what is logical for the future.

That will cause the exact opposite of the desired response. It was the same think with the Covid stuff. The technology should stand on its own legs and the benefits of it will become obvious to everyone, eventually. I don't remember reading about mandates for ICE vehicles coming out horse and carriage economy. That being said, I drove Tesla Y and I liked it, but it wasn't better than my Mercedes ML350 (now 12 years old), which I paid half price (when I bought 7 yrs ago) of new Model Y. So, the basic cost is an issue and the other thing, which I don't hear being talked about, is the cost of insurance, It would cost me almost three times as much as what I pay for my ML350. The bottom line say, there's no saving to be had at this point. If all things are equal, I'd prefer driving an EV, but we are not there yet.

Anyone whose income is ICE dependent (or their friends) will fight EVs. “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!” -Upton Sinclair
My friends had *easier* road trips last summer with EVs than gas cars. Why? Every hotel now has overnight chargers. Superchargers are on the interstates. The only issue is national parks now. Towing? Ok, limited to interstates, but isn't that most towing?
I agree, EVs will win market share off drag racing and luxury, not tree hugging.

I agree that climate benefits should not be part of EV advertising, but I haven’t seen much advertising for EVs at all, and I can’t think of any that have an environmental theme. Usually it’s performance or how quiet and smooth they are. On the other hand, I can think of lots of advertising for gas SUVs and trucks that you could say have an environmental theme, in that they show a family or a group of guys “escaping” to some unspoiled location.

We shut down the coal power plants and built natural gas power plants because they are about 1/2 as polluting as coal. But then somebody wrecked the pipelines between Russia and Europe. Then consider
"US is still shipping natural gas to Europe, and in 2023, the US was the largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU-27 and the UK, accounting for almost half of total LNG imports."
So now the fossil fuel industry is linked to both the price of gasoline and electricity for charging BEVs. In the meantime the cost of home solar is about 3X the cost in the US as AU.
    Who's on first?

I am right leaning and I work for a new car dealership and have been in charge of building the EV infrastructure in our dealership. I have driven EVs. I would ONLY own an EV as a second car. Unless you live on one of the coasts, you will not want to have to drive very far in an EV. He keeps talking about send money to the Saudis. Less than 10% of US oil imports come from any country in the Persian Gulf. Most us oil imports come from Canada. Personally, I am more concerned about how EVs and new cars in general can be hacked into or controlled. I drive a 1992 Diesel pickup that I can repair myself and I will not be buying a new car.
