[Verse 1]
You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothin' to prove
[Verse 2]
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I've been workin' at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across thе border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it mеans to be livin'
[Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He live in the bottle, that's the way it is
He said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So Mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
[Pre-Chorus]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 4]
You got a fast car
We go cruising and entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house, live in the suburbs
[Chorus]
Said I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 5]
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Instrumental Break]
[Outro]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

North Carolina born and raised
I'm 62 yrs old now, I was dating my husband when this song was released. We were two black people trying to make it in the world. We didn't come from money but we had good values within us. We used to listen to this song while riding around on Friday nights talking about our dreams. We could relate to the song about wanting to get away and just start fresh. Today we're living our dreams in our golden years. I didn't know there was a remake of it until looking at my phone and I listen to the country version by Luke Combs . I can still see why it's on Billboards and he did a good job. I teared up justing listening to it thinking about our struggles when we were young with only a high school education facing the world. We're first time grandparents and our kids are doing great.
I just read this comment on the Tracy Chapman video… we get it, congrats on being 62 I guess?
You have a wonderful story to share. I am very happy to see you were able to live out your dreams.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing the theme song to your dreams and your happy ending story!❤️
Thank you for sharing your story❤
What a great story. Thanks for sharing ❤
A song that’s so full of hope and yet be so heartbreaking at the same time. Beautiful rendition.
This song relates to everyone. Why it is a great song. American Made.

I love this song. He didn't change the lyrics. Respect.

@@Itsnevaeh645no shit who do you think he was referencing about not changing the lyrics?

I love both versions of this song. It’s sadness, hope and desperation all wrapped together. So much for some of us to relate to.🥹
@coolingwinds is right
It’s so sad Ike
The original reminded me of my situation as a teenager. Life was hard. My dad didn't want to grow up. I couldn't save him so I saved myself.
Whatever you're going through God will help you and get you through it. Trust in him and believe in him. God has a plan for your life. Always remember Jeremiah 29:11: "So I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, the plans to prosper you and not to harm you, the plans to give you hope and a future"

Both Tracy and Luke do this song justice. Tracy wrote such a beautiful and relating song to others. Myself included. They both made great renditions of this song. I love them both so much.
How does a writer make a rendition if it's an original? Luke made the rendition. And yes they both sound great
celes its tracy's master piece, and luke did it justice with his version
Wow, that was a great cover of a great song! Well done, Luke Combs. I don't know anything about country music, but I just read that Tracy Chapman took home the award for song of the year for his cover. I'm really pleased to hear that. This song has touched a lot of people. I remember when it first came out.
One of my favorite songs when I was a kid 😁
This was my sons (now 26 yrs old) favorite song (the original) when he was only 3 yrs old. I had to play it all the time. He still loves it. He recently made a playlist for our road trip, and of course it was on there. The song will always have a special place in my heart for more reasons than one. It's simply amazing.
I love Luke's version as well! He did a great job covering it and I'm so glad he didn't change the lyrics.
The greatest thing Luke did was introduce this song to a new generation. You know they're all going back and listening to the original version, and I'm glad for that.
It's a great song that really brings on all the feelings.
Sounds like my son he's 12 absolutely loves the original and this one
I love that he doesn’t change a single word even calls himself a checkout girl some artist would have found a new line but you can tell he very much enjoys the original and didn’t want to make it his own

Song of the Year went to Tracy Chapman last night at the CMA Awards with "Fast Car." Written & originally released by Chapman on April 6, 1988. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1988 & again hit the charts in 2023 when country singer Luke Combs released it, hitting #2 on Billboard Hot 100 & #1 on Country Airplay chart. When it hit #1 on the country chart in 2023, it became the 1st time a Black woman hit #1 with a solo composition.

I just have heard this song on the radio on yesterday. I love this song. You did awesome job Luke Comb.
Same, i heard it on the radio while I was in a taxi. It's the first time I hear this version and it's amazing!
I have been just listening the song without knowing the lyrics and now the lyrics are super meaningful .What a perfect song !It gonna be in my forever favorite list 💕
Yeah buddy 😂❤
You can listen to the lyrics without the video
I enjoy the fact that Luke didn't change the lyrics, he's still singing in the perspective of a woman and I think that's really respectful to Tracy Chapman's work. ❤
We all are on a fast ride, a ride which can end at any moment. Souls ain´t alright nor right with GOD, to go back home.

Definitely a Masterpiece song, strong enough to remain for ever, great cover Luke! 👏👏
Leaving this comment here so every time somebody likes, I'll get reminded of this amazing cover.
I love the original so much and I get so excited when I hear this version play on the radio.
Every time I try to sing along to the chorus, I cry. Amazing song, amazing cover!
WOW this is beautifully done!! He has truly done justice to one of my all time favorite songs. Repeat repeat repeat!
Agreed.
Wow, I just heard this cover and had to Shazam it; I LOVE his voice with this timeless classic. 👏 Man, can you imagine a duet of this with him and Tracy Chapman??
This song still gets to me I so relate my mama left my daddy I had to take care of him he passed away in 2008 I love both versions but luke combs you nailed this made it a even bigger hit!
Fast Car by Tracy Chapman is one of my favorite songs in existence, I thought any cover would do her song a disservice, but I actually love it and I don't even like country music. 😅
I never knew how powerful and wonderful this tune was till I sat and read the lyrics. Great rendition by Luke of a fantastic song by Tracy. Lets get along, like we do here in East Texas.
I'm from East Texas (Tyler) and we do ok. Lot of overtones. But I love that city.
Song always makes me tear up. It's just a beautiful song.
this song is even more relevant today than when Tracy released it , I've heard a Reggae version of this song, heard it sung in German, great songs translate into all walks of life and genres of music . Very happy Tracy won song of the year , nice cover
Great job on the country 4:19 side of it, as a black man, I know Tracy C is proud of you bringing it back!! I love her version and your version!!
the fact that he didn't gender swap the lyrics (which happens a lot on covers) was impressive... just sang the song as it was written and had the most impact on him
A very honest and convincing rendition to an absolute beauty from Chapman. Chapman wasn't treated right during her time
After all of these years of loving this song I have finally understand what it means. It is about someone stuck in a toxic relationship. They are recalling on the better times in their past that they hope will return but they clearly do not .The only way out of the relationship is moving on from it and leaving that person. Take your fast car and keep on driving❤
That is not how she described the song lol , she said the song was inspired by her parents when they were young and trying to start a new life and the fear, excitement, and struggles to get there .
thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard, how come you think every song has to be about a relationship?
@@joeymorrison8905 you might want to take another look at the lyrics - it’s definitely about someone who has gone from one toxic relationship to another.
I was diagnosed with cancer for the first time at age 13. Me and my girlfriend at the time used to climb on the roof at night, lay next to each other, watch the stars and listen to this song on repeat (not this version obviously). I look back now and realize how blessed I am to still be here and while me and her aren’t together today, she played a big part in me overcoming that battle. Fast forward to 3 years ago (age 34), was diagnosed again. This time I had my current girlfriend of 12 years by my side. Once again in remission. I’ve been through some things but God has never left my side and has given me the tools I needed every time.
I would love if he and Tracy Chapman performed this together live.
Oh man, that would be incredible!! I'd *love* to see this as a duet.
That would be awesome
Omg yes
Anyone else hard ?
NO JUST TRACEY….. Luke should have NEVER DONE THIS SONG
Lovely song about envisioning a new start in life...been there.❤️
I escaped an abusive household where I was tortured every day. I'm doing great now. This song makes me cry thinking about how I would just be dying in a dark corner in silence with nobody to see or hear or even care about my suffering.
I can relate That last part hang in there, bro
Same here man! Life is sometimes so dark and tough for it seems no particular reason at all. But together we'll grab the Light and make it to better days!
That is what keeps me going everyday.
So hang on in there and stay strong! Good times will always come again!

this song is such a masterpiece. his voice is so strong. the lyrics are so powerful. I grew up with divorced parents. It was definitely not an easy life. I used to be a mommy’s girl, I would always go for mommy and daughter dates with her. Lately, we’ve had a falling out. I haven’t seen her for about 6 months. I became more of a daddy’s girl.
i'm sorry for your current situation i wish the very best for you and onward
Have you listened to the original by Tracy Chapman??
I hope you find peace w your mom.
My parents divorced due to my dad's drinking. I was only 7. My brothers- who were my nest friends- wanted to stay w my daddy (codependency, but mom didn't know about that back then). So mom left w my baby sister & I and moved 2 states away. I was crushed but we never talked about it. Ever..She was 32 w 4 kids.. through therapy I've been able to make peace (almost) w my moms decision. I divorced around the same age and can understand why she did things the way she did.. life, especially w children can be very hard for a single mom. I adored my mom but still had some anger inside that never healed. She died 10 years ago. I wish I'd had that talk w her while she was still alive but she knew what separating us kids did, and she carried that guilt for the rest of her life. I also had anger towards my daddy, but we never spoke of it. I could see the sadness in their eyes when i asked questions when I was a child. I didn't want to make them sad, and stayed mute on the subject for the rest of their lives.
So instead of talking to them and perhaps getting answers and maybe finding peace, I talked to empty chairs in therapy. I could say whatever I wanted, but it's not the same as a 2 person conversation.
Sorry for the novella. I just wanted you to know how important it is to talk them while they are still here. Even if it only eases the pain a bit- that's better than nothing.
Hoping you find the peace you deserve. ❤
Love it, reminds me of high in the late 80s. I had a fast car and had no direction in life. Fast cars come and go, sadness stays a while.

I hope you have been able to rise above the sadness and find joy.❤

Every time I hear this song, I’m one step closer to being SOBER! 😭 😆 such mixed feelings because I’m still in a bad place!
You can do it
Sending prayers. Where there's life, there is hope. Just don't die!
Hey there! You can do it! It's not easy- I won't lie- but it's so worth it. The world looks so much brighter when you're sober and you REALLY FEEL JOY. I am almost five years clean of opiates. I know that it's different, but the reason most of us abuse drugs/alcohol is to escape, numb, and try to forget the pain. But here is the deal- the pain doesn't just go away until we face it. The only way to really do that- and be able to handle the feelings- is sober.
Another reason ppl abuse drugs/alcohol is to self medicate some mental illness. I recommend a dual diagnosis treatment center because they will help you see if you are experiencing any mental illness. It flies under the radar a lot, so going to one is important and helps the process.
Either will help keep you as comfortable as possible during acute withdrawal.
Wishing you the best of luck. A friend sent me a quote during my detox and I still have it on my refrigerator.
"It's amazing on the other side of hard" that is so true.
You can do this! Wishing you the best of luck.

Me and Tracy wrote this song. She is a very close friend of mine, infact I've known her for over 35 years.
The song is very personal to us both.
It was me who got they into music...
Tracy wanted to be a car mechanic, but I told her, no TC (that's what her close friends and family call her), you must chase your dreams. You are a talented artist and you must do what your heart tells you. And she said ok.
Then we sat and wrote fast car. She played it on guitar and I knew instantly it would become a classic.
Tracy is one of the most humble people you will ever meet.
Always there to help.
The industry, money and fame hasn't changed her one bit. We still meet up every few weeks for a catch up and coffee. Really proud of her.

Fantastic cover. The only thing is, in Tracy's original version, at the end of the song instead of saying "you got a fast car, is it fast enough so we can fly away" she says "is it fast enough so YOU can fly away." That's the crux of the song, a failed relationship with a good for nothing, that she's tired of and has finally discarded. I wish Luke had sung it the same way, but still a great cover.
Nice contrast from Tracy's original. Both are good.
This song never gets old. I still really love listening to it

I'm starting from scratch just me and my 4 kids when their father decided to up and leave for a more entertaining life and younger women...and I'm not the one who failed but it sure feels like I did. 💔
Stay strong , god is always with you!
Don’t give up. You’ll only fail when you give up. There are plenty of men and women who were done wrong by someone they trusted but they picked themselves up and become owners of big businesses and super successful. It was the Heart break and the need to survive that pushed them to do better for themselves and the kids who had no choice in the situation. Great things come when you have no choice but to succeed. I had to start over too and luckily I had no kids with the guy but we all made decisions that lead us there so make different decisions…better ones.
Boohoo
He is the one who loses in the end, which he will see. You are going to be okay. And who knows, once you're healed, you may likely meet the man that makes you thank God that he left. Either way, everything happens for a reason, so you just have to find it. Your children will resent their father for walking out on them and love and protect you until the bitter end.
You didn't fault he did I have been there before it was me and three daughters we made it I graduated college they are living there lives own there own now they are all in there 20s so you will make it God will make sure of it. You can do all things through Christ.❤
