I'm 62 yrs old now, I was dating my husband when this song was released. We were two black people trying to make it in the world. We didn't come from money but we had good values within us. We used to listen to this song while riding around on Friday nights talking about our dreams. We could relate to the song about wanting to get away and just start fresh. Today we're living our dreams in our golden years. I didn't know there was a remake of it until looking at my phone and I listen to the country version by Luke Combs . I can still see why it's on Billboards and he did a good job. I teared up justing listening to it thinking about our struggles when we were young with only a high school education facing the world. We're first time grandparents and our kids are doing great.
Whatever you're going through God will help you and get you through it. Trust in him and believe in him. God has a plan for your life. Always remember Jeremiah 29:11: "So I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, the plans to prosper you and not to harm you, the plans to give you hope and a future"
I enjoy the fact that Luke didn't change the lyrics, he's still singing in the perspective of a woman and I think that's really respectful to Tracy Chapman's work. ❤
We all are on a fast ride, a ride which can end at any moment. Souls ain´t alright nor right with GOD, to go back home. Choosing not to repent and BORN AGAIN, souls still daily live in sins. (Luke: 13:3 KJV) Perishing because of the knowledge, which they didn´t care about knowing. (HOSEA 4:6 KJV)
Both Tracy and Luke do this song justice. Tracy wrote such a beautiful and relating song to others. Myself included. They both made great renditions of this song. I love them both so much.
This was my sons (now 26 yrs old) favorite song (the original) when he was only 3 yrs old. I had to play it all the time. He still loves it. He recently made a playlist for our road trip, and of course it was on there. The song will always have a special place in my heart for more reasons than one. It's simply amazing. I love Luke's version as well! He did a great job covering it and I'm so glad he didn't change the lyrics. The greatest thing Luke did was introduce this song to a new generation. You know they're all going back and listening to the original version, and I'm glad for that. It's a great song that really brings on all the feelings.

Song of the Year went to Tracy Chapman last night at the CMA Awards with "Fast Car." Written & originally released by Chapman on April 6, 1988. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1988 & again hit the charts in 2023 when country singer Luke Combs released it, hitting #2 on Billboard Hot 100 & #1 on Country Airplay chart. When it hit #1 on the country chart in 2023, it became the 1st time a Black woman hit #1 with a solo composition.

I was diagnosed with cancer for the first time at age 13. Me and my girlfriend at the time used to climb on the roof at night, lay next to each other, watch the stars and listen to this song on repeat (not this version obviously). I look back now and realize how blessed I am to still be here and while me and her aren’t together today, she played a big part in me overcoming that battle. Fast forward to 3 years ago (age 34), was diagnosed again. This time I had my current girlfriend of 12 years by my side. Once again in remission. I’ve been through some things but God has never left my side and has given me the tools I needed every time.

After all of these years of loving this song I have finally understand what it means. It is about someone stuck in a toxic relationship. They are recalling on the better times in their past that they hope will return but they clearly do not .The only way out of the relationship is moving on from it and leaving that person. Take your fast car and keep on driving❤
That is not how she described the song lol , she said the song was inspired by her parents when they were young and trying to start a new life and the fear, excitement, and struggles to get there .
@@joeymorrison8905 you might want to take another look at the lyrics - it’s definitely about someone who has gone from one toxic relationship to another.
This song made me tear up. I had to start from scratch I Am sober . Alcoholic father , then I turned into an alcoholic daughter . Got hit by a car in my bike when I was drunk . 3 inches away from the metal part my brain would be splattered I suffered from Traumatic brain injury . this song is such a masterpiece. his voice is so strong. the lyrics are so powerful. I grew up with divorced parents. It was definitely not an easy life. I used to be a mommy’s girl, I would always go for mommy and daughter dates with her. Lately, we’ve had a falling out. I haven’t seen her for about 6 months. I became more of a daddy’s girl.

I divorced around the same age and can understand why she did things the way she did.. life, especially w children can be very hard for a single mom. I adored my mom but still had some anger inside that never healed. She died 10 years ago. I wish I'd had that talk w her while she was still alive but she knew what separating us kids did, and she carried that guilt for the rest of her life. I also had anger towards my daddy, but we never spoke of it. I could see the sadness in their eyes when i asked questions when I was a child. I’m from Puerto Rico and my wife is from Medellin Colombia. We went through so much obstacles to be together. Thanks to God and love we managed to make it through the process and now we’ve been living in Connecticut happily married. This song reminds me of our journey
As a long time country music fan with an eclectic taste in music, I haven’t heard this song since I was a child. My country music loving parents LOVED Chapman. I’m man enough to admit upon first hearing this version, I wept like a baby
Hey there! You can do it! It's not easy- I won't lie- but it's so worth it. The world looks so much brighter when you're sober and you REALLY FEEL JOY. I am almost five years clean of opiates. I know that it's different, but the reason most of us abuse drugs/alcohol is to escape, numb, and try to forget the pain. But here is the deal- the pain doesn't just go away until we face it. The only way to really do that- and be able to handle the feelings- is sober. Another reason ppl abuse drugs/alcohol is to self medicate some mental illness. I recommend a dual diagnosis treatment center because they will help you see if you are experiencing any mental illness. It flies under the radar a lot, so going to one is important and helps the process. Either will help keep you as comfortable as possible during acute withdrawal. Wishing you the best of luck. A friend sent me a quote during my detox and I still have it on my refrigerator. "It's amazing on the other side of hard" that is so true. You can do this! Wishing you the best of luck.
Wheew combs you changed all the quieting and all that. Nice and loud. That's what I wanted thank you! I will sing this song with all I've got. Thank you!
Nah, nobody can beat the voice of Tracy Chapman. Her voice bring a sense of sorrow and desperation that I can't see others be able to match. Her voice perfect, her pitch is perfect, her cry is perfect, her tone is perfect.
This song spoke to my parents when they were young. They were incredibly poor. They worked their butts off and ended up really wealthy. Set my brother and I up with every opportunity. I am so proud of them
Fantastic cover. The only thing is, in Tracy's original version, at the end of the song instead of saying "you got a fast car, is it fast enough so we can fly away" she says "is it fast enough so YOU can fly away." That's the crux of the song, a failed relationship with a good for nothing, that she's tired of and has finally discarded. I wish Luke had sung it the same way, but still a great cover.
This is one of my favorite songs but my girlfriend will cry to this song ❤❤❤ I love my girlfriend so much she is such a sweetheart I asked her to go to prom with me and she said yes ❤❤❤❤

I’m from Puerto Rico and my wife is from Medellin Colombia. We went through so much obstacles to be together. Thanks to God and love we managed to make it through the process and now we’ve been living in Connecticut happily married. This song reminds me of our journey
Heartbreaking song. I'm from small town Oklahoma I can relate. This song is a Master peice
This song is the best❤❤
I have always loved this song! Good to hear it back on the radio!
As a long time country music fan with an eclectic taste in music, I haven’t heard this song since I was a child. My country music loving parents LOVED Chapman. I’m man enough to admit upon first hearing this version, I wept like a baby
Glad to know it’s not just me 😭😂 I can’t get through the song without absolutely sobbing
Every time I hear this song, I’m one step closer to being SOBER! 😭 😆 such mixed feelings because I’m still in a bad place!
You can do it
Sending prayers. Where there's life, there is hope. Just don't die!
Thank you!
I absolutely love this song ❤❤❤
im glad you like it @tasha3213. we still dont care
saw taylor singing this on Grammy's and now it's one of my favorites 🥲
Nah, nobody can beat the voice of Tracy Chapman. Her voice bring a sense of sorrow and desperation that I can't see others be able to match. Her voice perfect, her pitch is perfect, her cry is perfect, her tone is perfect.
Thank God that her priceless original rendition touches the hearts of those behind her!!! 🥹✨❤️🔥🙏🏾
She is so monotone, appears to not know the lyrics...
This song spoke to my parents when they were young. They were incredibly poor. They worked their butts off and ended up really wealthy. Set my brother and I up with every opportunity. I am so proud of them
Falling in love with a man who never stops trying to be the best he can possibly be EVERY SINGLE DAY
Good on Tracy that she gets a second go round on this excellent song, and good on Luke for recognizing it and having the guts to do it.
I love when old songs make a comeback 😊 I love Tracy Chapman's version but this song is just as good 👍
Gave me goosebumps!!
Tracy Chapman's version is the best hands down but this version is growing on me to
I was 15 years old and this was my favorite one wow and bravo to Tracey for receiving this award ❤ love from Athens Greece (I am 49 now) 🇬🇷

It’s beautiful isn’t it? Luke done good!!!!
Great song then. Great song now.
I respect Luke SO much for giving the ultimate respect to Tracy Chapman ❤😂🎉
True❤
Gosh, this song is so relatable!!
Never knew Luke Combs worked in the market as a checkout girl 🤔 Nice
I love that even though it's a song originally written by a female, he didn't change the lyrics in his cover
Fantastic, lyrics are soooo good and that chorus.....
Wow, awesome rendition of Tracy Chapman's song!!!. Love it.. #FastCar🙏💙💪🏽🚘
ONE OF MY FAVORITE COVER SONG,AND I AND I DEFINITELY PLAY IT ON REPEAT
Fantastic cover. The only thing is, in Tracy's original version, at the end of the song instead of saying "you got a fast car, is it fast enough so we can fly away" she says "is it fast enough so YOU can fly away." That's the crux of the song, a failed relationship with a good for nothing, that she's tired of and has finally discarded. I wish Luke had sung it the same way, but still a great cover.
@1:20 is my fav part
