FUN FACT: While George Washington Carver did not invent peanut butter, he did create his own recipe of it. He refused to patent it, however, because he felt like someone could do it better and improve on his methods. That's Carver's humility for you.
I went to Iowa State University, and they make it a point to teach every student there about George Washington Carver. Incredibly pleased to see he's finally getting the proper Biographics treatment!
Squad. Towers checking in.
I also attended Iowa State University of Science and Technology (its full name) starting in 1972. I took two years of math classes in Carver Hall in support of my Engineering education.
Moses and Susan Carver made sure George had education and the run of their home. Peanuts came from Peru first and peanut butter. But George did find many ingenious uses for peanuts. Crop rotation came to the USA from Britain colonist. George was an exceedingly intelligent man and worked to continue learning always. George and his brother did not want to stay with their mother. Moses and Susan were so nice.
For the late 18 hundreds adopting children of former Slaves was an outstanding move and very rare. Respect to the Carver family
@Apex Gemini The answer is too obvious to even worth explaining it. Re-read the sentence, particularly the bit about the late 1800's and adopting former slaves in the southern US and therein lies your answer
Apex Gemini they gave him a chance to pursue a career path and get a good education while risking their social status that’s great about it
@Apex Gemini Who else was doing this?
Djangoooo
@Apex Gemini Gone back where? These were black orphan children in the late 19th century.
My husband was researching his family history, and found out that he was related to G.W. Carver!!
How cool is that !!
Awesome!!!
Wow! That's amazing! Your husband is lucky! ❤
@@PrincessQ-fj9ly he is also related to the Romanov's, Elvis, Jimmy Stewart, Betty Davis, and several other actors and actresses however many times removed. I told him that it made sense with the Romanov's... Cause he was a royal pain in my butt, lol
Yo he got that green-thumb does he farm
He wasn’t brilliant, he was a genius!!!! He knew crops and he knew the people he wanted to help. Sending a traveling school to help the less educated, either black or white, farmers is brilliant!!!!
so brilliant could be said to be genius?
@@JamesThomas-pj2lx Stop rocking the boat, lol. PC believers need PC heroes, even if they must be invented.
@@JoeSexPack GWC is not invented, he's a real person. Conspiracy theorists are so weird.
@@JoeSexPack Yes, he's as fake as George Washington himself and your mom
@Nabor Simbor At least you didn't claim he invented peanut butter, LOL. Still waiting for a single patent, invention or 'peanut use' discovered. Plastic is made of petroleum. Shampoo, shaving cream & stain/paint can be made of any plant oil. Peanut versions don't sell because they don't work well & stink of peanuts, ha ha
I graduated from Tuskegee and we have an entire museum dedicated to carver .....I’m so excited about this video
in a book I read about him, he was also known to concoct paint in his lab and would, for free, use it to paint barns. One paint in partticualr he was known for was a vibrant blue paint, made from the red clay soil found in missouri. This man is an alchamist in my mind.
Making blue paint from red clay is quite an achievement! 🤔 This dude could bring peace to the Crips and Bloods! 😅
@@joshglover2370 just give them some brains, problem solved 😅
“When there is no vision, there is no hope”
George Washington Carver
I remember doing a school report on him when I was 11 years old, and he has been a hero to me ever since. His work shows how the intersections of science and industry can be used to create systemic change to help both the causes of poverty and environmentalism. I truly wish more people understood this about him and what a humanitarian he was.
I did a report on him at age 11 too! 😳
i did one on Civil war, and how they lived off peanut butter and johnny cakes, later i was told to do one on GW Carver, where the lie of peanut butter was exposed.
the teacher didnt like it.... SMH
George Washington Carver wasn't just an historical figure.....he was a family friend. My grandmother knew him well since she graduated from Tuskegee Institute where he taught and her father taught at Tuskegee and both worked for Booker T Washington. I spent my childhood visiting the family house in Tuskegee and visiting the Carver Museum, still on the campus and run by the National Parks Service.
I'm an alumni of the high school he's named after: George Washington Carver Center for Arts & Technology. I'm so happy to see you do a video on him.
I didn't know he was named after a school....
@@mike62mcmanus I just noticed I phrased it wrong. The high school I went to is named after him.
@@PDJ004 He is someone special, at least the school is not named after Muhammad Ali or Oprah Winfrey. One of my avorite people is Dr.Ben Carson, a guy who worked his way through poverty to make a contributing difference in the field of medicine namely brain surgery...
@@PDJ004 I was just fooling with you a bit....
@@mike62mcmanus I think Dr. Ben Carson would have made a fine POTUS!
The American Tesla. Dude was a humble genius. Most of his weird new material tech and medical innovations were aimed at encouraging more responsible farmig practices that would save poor sharecroppers and also U.S. food supply chains. Also,he could talk to plants. True story.
I'm from Alabama and lived in Enterprise, Alabama. The entire southeast Alabama wouldn't be affluent as it is without George Washington Carver. He even has a museum in Dothan, Alabama dedicated to him. He has murals in Banks like Wells Fargo down here. We even have an National Peanut Festival every year in Dothan bc of him. He's a treasure
These videos are making my Social Distancing at home a little easier! I do Love Learning. Thanks!!!
A true botanist.
He looked down into the brown dirt and saw color; colors so vivid & bright they would bring a tear to your eye.
George Washington Carver is one of my favorite historical figures. The man did so much for so many.
George Washington Carver has always been one of my heroes, ever since I was a very young child.

Me and alot of other intellects appreciate this video. Makes me proud to be a black American.
@Apex Gemini I'm not smarter than you. I haven't lived your life or nor do I want to.
I first learned about this amazing man back in grade school, because there was an entire special school dedicated to a specific sort of "field trip" - our class spent an entire day there, and it was the most fun day of school I can remember - and that's saying a lot since I adored school even at the worst of times. The notion of the school (I think) was to show other ways of teaching kids than "sit down, be quiet, memorize." Every single class was hands-on in some way or other. We learned about mirrors, then made our own kaleidoscopes - learned about English culture (a very small amount) and while the teacher talked we ate snacks inspired by or directly drawn from English recipes. That kind of stuff. And throughout all of it we kept hearing about how Carver wanted every person to do the best they could with what they had - a paraphrase of his motivations, perhaps, but a useful one. There was no failing any of the projects or classes, there was no sharp criticism of one's work, there was a consistent and pervasive attitude that promoted creative thinking and just...just generally made us kids feel like we COULD do any damned thing we felt like doing in life. That was a first for a lot of us. I feel like that special school was very much keeping alive what Carver would've wanted.
My full ride scholarship was in his name, I will forever be indebted
IF YOU HAPPEN TO GET A CHANCE TO GO TO HIS MUSEUM, IN DIAMOND MISSOURI, GOOOOOOOOOO!!!😍😍😍
we happened upon it, by chance, and it's now one of my fave places on earth!!!💖💖💖👍👍👍
I remember learning that he invented, or at least perfected the process of grafting one kind of plant to another.
I grew up and live in Joplin Missouri, which is neighboring Daimond MO. Very interesting to see our small town mentioned. I sell Real Estate in Missouri and Kansas, and the George Washington Carver national monument has been very formative for many in the area.
Can we get a Booker T Washington video next?
I knew Carver was a dynamic man, but had no idea he was so incredibly influential. Very informative, and it's good to see that adversity can be overcome even in the worst of times and situations. Amazing man. Now I want to know more about Booker T. Washington...
I learned about G.W.C. in grade school and it was about two pages of info in an African American History book. I knew, even as a third grader, that there was way more to it.
He is a fascinating man, his National Park in Diamond, MO is very interesting and beautiful.
We were wondering where his monument was.
This video just made me remember when i was a kid back in middle school making a presentecion over the great man
I've been to George Washington carver memorial, I live pretty close to it, worth a stop if you like history or just want a pretty place to take a walk
wow here first for the first time!
Also i want to thank this channel, for feeding my constant historical appetite. The history channel just doesn't do it for me anymore like it use to.
Almost the same :)
Another great video about a very interesting person. Thanks for making being stuck at home bearable. Stilling hoping for a Jacques Cousteau video.
A real American Hero. Thank you for this video.
" the guy who chopped up George Washington?"
That guy was actually a tree getting revenge for his fallen brother.
Thanks at least now I'll his name
Was looking for Simpsons references in the comments. Was not disappointed.
I just watched Marc Maron's latest special on Netflix and while he was doing his bit on GWC I was thinking to myself that you should do a Biographics on him, my FBI guy is working overtime...
Wow! Goosebumps. Thanks Simon. Amazing episode.
Thank you Simon 🖖
One of my favorite people who ever lived. THanks

He made a paste out of peanuts, the world taught he was nuts
No pun intended

Very inspiring!
It's beautiful to see beyond our differences and grasp brilliance. No matter the race, sex or Creed, there's a sparkle of light in each generation. In such a dangerous and difficult time in history, the light of brilliance couldn't be ignored. Thanks Simon for another great dose of history. Stay safe🤗, blue is one of colors.

3:05 “Carver’s George”. Wow! That is deep; for that to be the way you refer to yourself, the way you see yourself, the reality of your life. I’m just blown away by that. I had to pause, to let that marinate for a bit. Goodness. Slavery, man😐.
I had no idea that Carver had such an extensive education! This video was a complete eye-opener! Thank you, Simon & crew!💖
The George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, Mo is truly worth a visit. It is kind of in the middle of nowhere but worth the drive. The visitor's center/museum has a great collection of exhibits that detail his life. A lot of the info you shared can be seen there. There is also a trail that leads you around the farm.
I loved the video as always. Can you make a video about the life of Osamu Dazai, the author of No Longer Human?

Last time I was this early, we could still go outside.
