    A reference people miss is when the Banditos say " We don't need no stinking badgers". It is from the 1948 movie The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Mel Brooks loves to put in these obscure references in all his films.

    As the only black person in my friend group for the longest time, this is how I announced myself at every party. Partly as a joke, but also as a fact

    I also like the part when Gene Wilder turns his hand palm up. "See, it's coming off." (Lighter brown on the palms 😂). Most reactors don't catch that one.

      I think that's a reference to a traditional response to when a racist refuses to shake a black person's hand, and the black person sarcastically reassures them: "Don't worry, it doesn't rub off."

    Have had that for a ringtone for 30 years, but never used it.
    Could you imagine my phone going off with that one when I was an airline pilot
    ..... while getting a print out from behind a gate podium? : )

    Warner Brothers took a chance with this classic even back in 1974. Mel director/actor even stated it wouldn't made in 1974 after someone mentioned it would not be made today to Mel

      @DocMicrowave Месяц назад +2

      Yet, he was able to get it made. Albeit with slight of hand.
      Pretty much impossible today.

    This whole movie is full of Looney Tunes type gags like this. Which makes sense since Warner brothers made the movie.

      and, of course, because it's a typical Mel Brooks movie :D

    How many viewers even know who Jesse Owens is?

      I did and I was born in 1981. It’s called being educated. I thought it was one of the funniest lines in the movie. I grew up on early 20th century history. I used to watch a show from the 70s called The World At War narrated by a very sinister sounding Lawrence Olivier. I knew what the holocaust was from a young age and how horrible it was.

      Sadly, less and less people over time 😢
      Especially if Trump gets his way and guts education

      @jh2519 Месяц назад +3

      @@christhornycroft3686I wouldn't say knowing who Jesse Owens is would make people consider you educated.

      @jh2519 Месяц назад +1

      @@jerryhayes9497It's not gutting education, it's giving control to the states. There is no reason that the federal government should be running it. The federal government is for military, borders (currently failing), and upholding the constitution. Everything else is overreach.

      @@jerryhayes9497 don't be a knob. Education needs to be gutted. Especially after all the damage Democrats have done to it, teaching CRT, DEI, and all sorts of other woke BS.

    Richard Pryor wrote most of the jokes in the script. Brilliant comedian.

      No, he didn't. This was *very* early in his career and his first time working on a movie. Plus, most of the script was done before he was even on board as a writer, as he was iriginally supposed to play Bart. You don't cast the lead until you have mist of the script done. Pryor write most or all if the Mongo stuff, a good chunk if which ended up on the "edited for TV" version, which has the odd trait of having more stuff added than was removed. The added scenes include more Bart v Mongo, and ther "Gov" visiting the fame Rock Ridge, being totally fooled, posing foepr a photo op, and leaving seconds before the gang of villains arrived on the other end of town.
