  • With this pearl of Scottish folklore, I launch what I hope will be a long series of arrangements for four cellos.
The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond has been a favorite of mine ever since I first heard ‪@kingssingersvideos‬ The King’s Singers’ rendition. For this video, I adapted David Overton’s arrangement for four cellos, preserving its beautiful harmonies and interwoven lines.
The origins of this timeless song remain uncertain, but two main interpretations stand out:
1️⃣ A love song where a man, facing his fate, laments never reuniting with his true love "on the bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond."
2️⃣ A reference to the Jacobite defeat in 1746, with "the low road" symbolizing the path of the soul after death.
Both views add a unique depth to the song-choose the one that resonates with you!
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
    Chorus:
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
'Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond,
Where in soft purple hue, the highland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.
    Chorus:
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
I hope you enjoy this music as much as I have enjoyed working on it, recording it and editing it. Loch Lomond is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful songs ever composed.
