I just completed culinary school and I am 22. I’ve haven’t been taking things seriously until recently. I really want to become a chef. I’ve been cooking on lines and doing the simple stuff for too long and I’m ready to lock in and do this. Thank you for the advice chef.
Hey, I’m currently 19 years old. I had wasted two years of my life doing something I didn’t want to do at all just because I needed a job I needed to help out my family. I had gone through a lot during those two years. What I had noticed was that I wasn’t, OK with what I was doing as a job I wanted to do what I love to do and what I do best and that’s cooking. I struggle to find people and or friends, who have the same passion as I do. In other words, I live in the hood and everyone out here, doing their own thing shooting each other gang violence, and drugs while I want to escape. I want to pursue cooking. cooking has saved my life it’s taught me several lessons, but sadly the restaurants around my house are family owned. The food they cook is not what I want to cook. I want to choose the type of chef I want to be right now I have an idea but I am sure that later on in life I’m going to change my mind. If I can find a find a good restaurant id apply first glance. I never really get to talk about this in the real life it feels good to talk about it. Thank you for the advice.
That is very true 😢
@@ChelseaSekani hahhhhh i am 26
I feel you in a way no hood stuff but I live in Aus and in the country so there’s not many jobs but luckily my stepmum is a catering so I have worked with her abit but she doesn’t have much work so I’m doing that with her and going to tafe next year but I’m not passionate yet but I want to learn to cook and theres not much job opportunities here but I’m scared as I’m 17 just starting life 🫶
hope its going well
i hope ur dreams come true 💖 wishing the best 💫 i also have the same dream
I worked at Olive Garden while going to Culinary School. Now I own my own Food trailer. I couldn't be happier with my life!
How’d you know which culinary school would be the right fit for you? Was the one you picked only based off of tuition and location? My dream is to thrive off a food truck but for now, that is just me beginning with the end in mind, any advice or do’s & dont’s you may have to offer would be much appreciated. Congrats on pursuing your passion and owning a food trailer!!
do you feel going to culinary school helped you a lot with running your own food trailer? my goal is to eventually open a food trailer but im torn between whether I should go to culinary school or just continue to get experience in the industry and learn that way. I'm glad everything is going well for you keep it up :)
What school did you use
Did your culinary degree helped in opening your own food truck?
would you recommend culinary school, or working your way up and learning from chefs?
ive started as a dishwasher at 19 now im 21 and a broiler cook and i really enjoyed my short journey thats when i realized i like to cook for people and family thank you for posting this video. Im ready to set my plan
Love your advice -My 40+ yr old daughter has worked in the restaurant industry all her adult life from Hostess to Bartending-wait staff, catering and a prep cook. Her dream initially was to become a baker. Life changing situations and poor choices prevented her from doing so and most recently we brought her back home and she is living with us. She just started Arizona Culinary Institute almost 1 month ago. She is absolutely thriving! I have never seen her have more motivation and drive and confidence and she is doing extremely well. She is an excellent cook and can handle all of it. After being 25 yrs out of school, she was terrified for that first test and did Great! Your comments about the physical long hours of the job stand true- her class had 4 drops the first week as they could not deal with the pace and stress. Thank you for your video! It is very well stated and presented. 😀👩🍳
Wow, interested I have always love cooking but all of a sudden people drive me away from what I love doing that's cooking into fashion, and I ended up wasted few yrs now all the places I desire to work needed chef not cook, people employ chef now than cook.. but I really I appreciate your advice
Restaurant group. Chef driven menu. Thanks for your direction. ❤❤❤
I'm 55 and 11 mounth. I started a cullinary school in dublin andvi'm very bless that the cost are very raisonable..you're one of my favorite super star.❤❤❤
Am a Ghanaian and everything u said has encouraged me, thank u and pls continue with it
Watching this video helped shaped my perspective about what it takes to become a chef. I've got so many questions I'd love to ask you and advice so I don't waste many more years doing the wrong thing.
This video helped me out so much. I have been stressing so much about how i’m supposed to go about pursuing my dreams but this has helped so much.
Im a 17 year old from Canada, ive been working at the same fried chicken restaurant for the past 2 years, starting as a dish washer and slowly getting experience, getting my food handlers and working the line. I got the job when i was 15 unexpectedly after training to be a lifeguard for over a year. I had no idea how much I loved the kitchen, i didnt care how dirty it was how hard the labor was or how stressful itd be at times, i love every part of the kitchen, the serving, cleaning, dish washing, prep, line cooking all of it. Im applying to university in toronto to study law and social sciences just as something to do with my life and i know im going to hate doing it. I love the kitchen i know its my passion and i have really really big dreams and I know to take it one step at a time. I wasnt sure where to start so 20 mins ago i looked up "how to become a chef" and found this, this really inspired me genuinely and now i know what i really want to do, im going to start applying at better restaurants in my city and using all the help i can get to really get to work and practice. I hope one day soon i can go to culinary school instead of university, and work at bigger restaurants, and go to school and learn about foods from different places in the world. thank you for giving me the first steps.
The last part of the video put me at ease. You were talking about starting out of high school or starting at 16 along with a 10-year journey so I got a little discouraged. I'm almost 23 so I thought I might be starting to late until I got to that part of the video.
im 38 is it too late ?
You still young. If you want to boost launch your career without any student loan debts become a military cook. They will offer free culinary training and from there you can gain certificates backed by actual organizations, that alone will grant you a decent sous chef position. If you want to take it a step further you can use your GI bill to get a culinary degree for free
@@Me-eb3wv im gonna screenshot this. sounds like some good advice ngl
@@itzrezo8621 i heard the coast guard is the best place to work for military cooks.
Army & marines are terrible places because the cooks get abused, plus they just re heat food so they aren’t actually cooks. They get pouches filled with dried up food and all they do is add boiling water and call it a day. The navy is a hit or miss. I’ve also heard that in the navy you can work up to 20 hours straight without any days off for up to a month during deployment, but I’ve also heard that they receive a bunch of unwritten benefits like free stuff and getting their laundry done by others so that’s why it’s a hit or miss.
Coast guard and Air Force on the other hand the cooks are treated better, and the coast guard has the best chow hall. They’re also called the vacation branch since most of their bases are on the beach lol
To be fair I’ve heard a decent amount of stories of people working as chefs straight out of leaving the military
Im a beginner chef, im 18 years ive been a potwssher for a year, catering assistant for another and been a chef for 6 months, now ive got a job ad a chef and i can tell u from my own experence and hands on learning, getting a job in a kitchen and learning from a head chef is the absolutely best wah
As a 22 year old aspiring chef who has worked at Chili's as a prep cook for nearly 3 years now, I'm glad I had the time there but I'm definitely ready to move on to my new job working as a cruise ship assistant cook very soon. My job at Chili's is where I actually discovered I wanted to become a chef as it was originally a temporary job to get me through community college right after Covid, only for me to find out I wanted to explore more advanced culinary career options. Hoping I will learn enough on the cruise ship I'm currently wanting to work as a hotel chef when my contract is done.
I love this! So many good points. I dropped out of culinary school and I thought I had no chance back then. I applied at a country club and started at the bottom. But I moved up over time. It also took me 10 years to get to management. But I don't regret taking my time to get there. I think what you said about knowing a little of everything is sooooo important! I was a pastry chef, and I really dedicated myself to that but I always helped out with the savory side. Because I love that too, and now I just took on a banquet chef position and I'm so excited for the new challenge. There's so many opportunities in this field if you're willing to expand yourself.
You know what a chef values most above all else, in all positions? RELIABILITY. You show up consistently and answer calls-in when truly needed, you can not only get the restaurant you want, you can negotiate for more money than you think. If you can prove to a Chef that you are someone he/she does not have to worry about showing up, that has ambition and willingness to learn/climb the ladder, they will mentor you to the top. Chefs have to make 10000 decisions every day, and if you are not a problem to be fixed and/or a solution to existing problems, you are an employee worth worship in the eyes of a Chef.
Just make sure that you to over do it and be the "Yes man". I've seen too many people make themselves unpromotable and get passed over on opportunities because they are too valuable in their current role.
If you want to be be a Chef, want to be.... BE ONE, doing it for money, the wrong reason. Love this video. Am a chef, 49 years old
Thank you so much Chef! This is a perfect video for me and many of my young chef friends. These kinds of videos is something that I neeeeed. So will you offer any form of program where you could give more in depth, and descriptive information for lessons for up and coming chefs?
I’m 20 started at 19 in a pastry kitchen. I definitely want to end up being an executive pastry chef
just wanted to say a huge thank you for these information. I'm thinking about going to a culinary school for pastry arts and it was really good hearing these words from an expert chef.
started this year with a cuisine study and im working for a luxe restaurant for about 8 months rn. when i get the promotion to chef or i have an own restaurant, i’ll comment under this. Also thanks for the advise 💪❤️
im dutch (and a little tipsy) so sorry for the bad english
your chef authorised video about the cilantro oil came up in my shorts and I really loved the video so I looked you up, love it
Great advice thank you chef
I’m 25 years old doing some souls searching. I’ve been having trouble with keeping a job due to my ADHD. I’ve always loved cooking though. I’ll learn how to make anything as efficiently as possible. It’s a massive hyper focus of mine. I’ve worked in insurance and carpentry jobs since, but I’ve got experience in my college cafeteria and I spent a while working at a winery. The work just seems to spark something in me. It feels like art, and I usually feel happier to see the reaction of people who try my food than actually taste it myself. Maybe a small spoonful here or there to make sure it’s to taste. Anyways, my next job might not be in the cooking industry, but perhaps it will be my next move.
thank you so much it helps a lot
Am from Rwanda in eastern Africa am 40 years old am singlemother. I started cooking food in market when I was 7 years old I never got a chance to go to high school but I been working in restaurants, housemade or house help. Am in Dubai now where I worked as housemade and worked in different restaurants and parks. I need to be a chef, I need this chance to change my life.
your work ethic will take you places! how’s it going so far?
Question: Did working in different places enable you to learn the different cuisines, or did you learn them before and got an opportunity to practice or rather be better? Love the advice chef.
Different recipes for same dishes are used in different restaurants
Wow thank you so much 4 this video am so happy ❤
Thank you for making this video. Im about to start my first year of college and Im takeing a culinary program so im getting the degree and during my second semesters Im going to do a internship to get that experience But I well try to get a job early as possible to get more experience abd thank you!
But it would be hard to talk this out with my over protective perants and thank you! Sir

Thank you a lot
Your content really helps
Hey i am Chef Denis from Uganda can i kindly confirm something from you but what your talking is very true
Thanks Chef,I'm 32 been a KP for a while. Here in the UK
There's a restaurant paying $25 an hour about 30 minutes away. Probably not gonna get that right off the bat out of high school, but one can dream I guess.
(And luckily for me, my high school offers a culinary class for free. So after it's all said and done I get 600 hours in all around restaurant experience, a college credit, and a nice apron as a graduation gift)
Thank you. Trying to help my gf get a job or a career started as a chef.
What would you recommend to give as a gift for Christmas? She already buys cooking books twice a week and has so many so I don't think books are a good choice in my situation anymore. Lol
A little late but buy her a servsafe manager book
So I know this video is old by now, but I’ll add something about culinary school. While yes it doesn’t provide the correct experience for the field itself, it brings a whole new understanding of food than what you can get at home. For me college was the best way to get that since I’ve grown up poor my whole life. I’m just now at a reputable place to work at. If I didn’t have that degree, I wouldn’t have been able to get the job I currently have simply because I meet my boss in school. He was promoted before finishing school himself. Either way, depending on the situation, yes most of the time culinary school is a waste of time, but for certain people it can introduce them to a whole new side of food that they never experienced.
great,
I was a chef since I was 23 I’m 58 had a great or good career went to CIA IT HELPED my advice is the same you don’t need to go to school
If you don’t go to culinary school and are already working in a restaurant what is the starting point for a chef who doesn’t desire debt?
Im 25 now and a professional barista but i love cooking and looking forward to become an expert cook and later on a chef.
You think its possible for me at my age????
Alright chef i been working as a dishwasher now for almost two years i don't believe i be move up what do you recommend i do . I fid leave twice one to work in a factory that had layoffs and second was stocking shelves at grocery store i didn't last long there i have cooking experience qt chain restaurant so i don't know my next move
Jeez ive been in a joint for three years as a foodrunner but the problem is i started to go to school to be a graphic designer but being a chef is something ive always wanted to do i love food and i want to learn how to make all kinds of it and make money doing it but sometimes i am discourged based on how stressed the chefs but i do wanna try
Thank you, great advice. I am 41 years old, I have been working as a cook in hotel, childcare, and Deli. Is it too late to start looking becoming a chef? Where do I start?
Hey, I’m 15 years old, I want to become a chef when I grow up, I currently work at a small local pizza joint. I would like to take a step up and possibly go to culinary school after high school.
What would you think is the best route for me to take to achieve that dream
Im 18yrs old and its been my dream to become a chef since I was little but I don't know where to start, I'm currently in my 1st year of college in Hospitality management course with specialization of culinary and kitchens operations but I don't really like it because it's not focused on culinary that much. I live in the Philippines where culinary is not that great in terms of being successful career and btw I really hate college.
Keep fighting through that school. I was in your exact position back in 2018. I am now going back and going to finish culinary school. You’ll be in a way better place by the end of it. Keep crushing
@@isaiahgunther Did you finish a 4yr degree or went straight to culinary school after high school?
I was I’m the military and then tried going to a 4 year school. Didn’t work out so I chose to go to a 2 year culinary school and never finished. I will be returning to culinary school this coming up year.
@@isaiahgunther I see, good luck and I hope you'll finish culinary school this time.
thanks for your advice sir i would like to ask a question if you have a lot of African dishes and you want to become a sous chef how many years will it take you I live in Nigerian Lagos, and looking forward to working outside the country and what advice will you give me sir and am fast learner when its comes about cooking and I am very passionate about its

I’m 35 with a passion for cooking daily, but my wife is a 5AM gardener, so those hours would mean zero family time. Should I bother?
Hey. Im late to comments but i hope you can answer me hehe
What do you think that give us more and a quality experience for who is beggining in the kitchen: through for many kitchens and learn different things until know what do you really wanna do or pass more than 5 years in just one kitchen and being a "disciple" of this kitchen?
so in my town we don't really have any cheif driving restaurant since we a to small of a town we have places like Elisa, Mexican restaurant forgot the name since i don't eat there alot and we have a new one just open up called Sakura it a chiness restaurant. will those be ok to get my foot in?
I'm 30 and I recently joined as a commis chef in a Chinese restaurant
thank you so much
Thank you chef
Can you make one for people who are a little older?
Great advice 🇬🇾
I really like your video
Chef Brandon, I'm opening a small restaurant in Asia. What kind of immursion circulator should I get? My place will be a 20pax place.
I always wanted to be a chef. Although, i never really took my dreams seriously up until now; I'm glad that its not too late for me.
I've had many dreams about my future careers like being an astrophysicist (lol), lawyer, doctor, nurse and many more, but I've never really been passionate about doing those type of things. Being a chef has stuck onto me for the entirety of my life.
Cooking and baking is something I enjoy learning more about and watch, I felt that this is the future I want to aim for. So thank you for giving us advice and guidance on how to becoming a chef. I'm going to follow my dreams and see good results, hopefully.
Hey I’m currently 19 about to turn 20 I just graduated with my professional baking and want to further my career with culinary. Is it best to do culinary for more info on the kitchen and more experience?

16 years old? But i'm 30. Do i still stand a chance? Plus do you think me starting now is a good idea? Pls whats your advice?
Wonder if you have any advice for a career changer? I am currently working an office job and hate it.
Ok so…. Just go back and be 16 years old. Got it. Thanks.
There’s no reason to be mad at him because that you wasted your life
What? Why?
@@MinnesotaMan172 wait? This guy is mad? Damn, I had no idea. Must be reading between the lines or something.
am seeing this video since am 14
With all due respect you don’t know this man. Doesn’t matter what age you are it matters if you go out and get it
Bro, nice vid, however a few things,
I'm 42 and a you seem to talk about 16, 17 and 18 year old alot, what about people wanting to start cheffing at 40?
You said to not worrie about buying a knife set? In my experience, i always got asked if I had a set before I applied for a job.
I always got asked if I had my chef whites and chef shoes.
Good video though chef.
I've written a book about the ups and downs of being a chef.
It's called.
,The agency chef the dark side of London.
Have a read chef, it's on amazon
Im 18 in 2 months and as soon as i finish school i wanna begin my life do i go to chef school for a degree or not?
Thanks for your advice, please l want to be a growing chef how do I start, please I need your advice
I am 17 should a do hotel management or culinary schools
Good evening chef
I watched your video and I wanted to ask a query of mine
I am an Indian and there are no chances to get in any restaurant at 17 for working experience .
I wanted to go for culinary school , so can you give some idea about the culinary courses ,please?
Worst part is is that I was only certain with what I wanted to do around when I started college 2 weeks ago
I was actually like you
I wasn't sure when I was 14 but then I'm actually 16 and now I'm sure
But now I gotta wait 2 years just to finish college and I didn't even pick anything related to chef cooking stufff
I'm gonna have a bad 2 years
The first step to achieve what you want, is to rid of what you don't.
If you are not happy, don't push yourself. It is never too late to retrace your steps and reroute. It's better to back out at two weeks then waste two years doing something you're not passionate about.
Hi if someone wants to learn more about chef what will he suppose to do first

Bro I been wanting to be a chef and move to Dubai is it worth it?
Lol how is ember doing? Recognized you instantly just couldn't pinpoint where from!
Great video 👍 I’m 17 btw
I clicked on this video purely out of curiosity just wanting to kinda know why people decide to become chefs bc me personally, working at a different restraunts and fast food, i absolutely despised it and was embarrassed to be working there. Personally i do not mind cooking and enjoy the process of experimenting with new dishes and recipes but when I cook and decide to try to experiment, i have to be in the mood for it and know exactly what i want to eat but besides that cooking for 8-10 hours or however long yall work with all the pressure sounds like a nightmare to me.
I honestly do believe chefs have a pretty big role in society and do important work making the masterpiece dishes some chefs are capable of
Hi chef authorized um so i am a little younger than 16 well, kinda alot im 11 but i love cooking and making food and saw this video and i love it is the advice i need and i have a couple quiestions because i see and love that your saying hop in a restaurant and you dont need to go to calunary school but i was thinking for a while to go to that but i think when i get older i will hop in a really nice company called The Conrner and very fancy so do i still go to college and get the business and all that or just hop in you no colunary but yeah love the advice and please respond and give advice and tips wich will be very much appreciated ❤
I love cooking but I’m no chef I’m 31 would culinary school be good to learn more I want to open my own shop someday
Culinary school is expensive AF man. IMO the best route is the military route. Become an Air Force cook (free culinary school) and work your way up to getting promoted and try getting as many certificates that translates to the real world.
After your 4-6 year contract and certs to back you up you could start working as a sous chef without any student loan debt and from there work your way up into ultimately becoming a certified chef.
My dream was to become a chaf lam 15 years old lam from Papua New Guinea and l really really what to become a chaf

Bro.. if i was hungry and someone gave me a weak plate like that.. im going to be really disappointed
Who inspired you to become a chef ?
Hey I'm 29, I' want to career swap into the Chef world. I have applied for a completely free Chef De partie course and, it frustrates me that you keep saying "Be 16 years old." I currently work in the media industry and this is incredibly unstable working for 6 months at a time then spending another 6 months looking for a job.
I'm 21 and thinking of becoming a chef and now i wanna be 16 again 😭
