@@dunzhen yes. The numerous praises of him here , imho, are from an IB related thingie which I shall not say too much. An intelligent person can tell from a mile away who are these posting these comments. China is overtaking but this is a natural progression due to the stage of it's development , wealth and more importantly the decline of USA due to past mistakes and it's ways are no longer able to lead the world. This means one day China will be overtaken by India the next one. How so, no country can grow indefinitely. USA was invincible for most of our lives. No one even imagined it being taken over by China decades ago. USA is too big , too costly, too much in debt, too messed up with it's flawed democracy and too costly to upgrade it's entire country. Likewise, eventually, China will be exactly the same if not very similar. For Singapore, many think the more and more expensive cost of living is a sign of prosperity. It will eventually come to haunt Singapore. It's all a cycle. The end is there waiting for all

Contrary to popular belief Prof Mabubani isn’t pro-China. He is first and foremost a diplomat and an academic who speaks based on facts, history and vision to the future. If he is, he wouldn’t be so popular and respected in the US.
Contrary to Kishore, Mr Kausikan is bash, righteous, an admitted non-diplomatic critic of China, pro Western and took actions that harms Singapore’s interests. His writings and actions caused tensions between Singapore and China. It’s not surprising the quiet withdrawal of his ambassador at large title… in short he thought too big of himself. Unfortunately he has also fallen into the American narratives of linking anyone who spoken up for China and Chinese cultures as pro- CCp. That’s the most disappointing and surprising coming from a MFA background.
But suppose as Singapore we need the likes of both gents to balance up both views and display a level of neutrality aka diversity of thoughts without expressing a position.
We should keep to where we are now and learn the lessons in 2016-2017 and keep to Prof Kishore’s thoughts rather than Bilahari’s position to keep the peace with the superpowers.
Bilahari however should be careful not to mix Chinese culture language history with Chinese communist ideology and united front strategy-actions. Don’t bring McCarthyism into Singapore! While he has not learnt anything half of his existence and culture, he shouldn’t be preventing others to find their own sense of 5000 years civilisation. Will he stop any Muslims’s desire to visit Mecca, Chistian to see God or Jesus upon death and Indian/ Buddhist aspirations for Nevana? He should be careful and think before he shouts away! All these aspirations and desires to find one’s identity and feelings has not conflict against a Singaporean identity and loyalty to Majulah Singapura

It seems like the interviewer is biased toward the West since he focused his questions to Kishore to explain his stance on China, trying to draw Kishore to say something against China. When the interviewer asked the question why the West keep inviting Kishore back despite Kishore being critical of the West, he seemed to insinuate that the West are open minded, tolerant of criticism and magnanimous since he also asked what can we learn from the West. What the interviewer doesn’t understand is that’s how the Anglo-Saxon fight; even in the midst of fervently trying to contain China, implementing all sorts of hostile sanctions against China, they still constantly try to engage with their Chinese counterparts. This is partly to gauge the Chinese red line and decide how far they can push, partly to distract the Chinese to think that they are open to negotiations and of course, their smug attitude to show that they are in control. In Kishore’s case, they are just trying to show that he can say all he wants but it will have insignificant impact; typical Anglo-Saxon arrogance.

One IMPORTANT POINT worth clarifying, explaining & elaborating is the criticism of Kishore Mahbubani (KM) by Donald Emmerson (DE) of Stanford Univ, Head of South Eastern Studies Section or Department. (Listen to the portion, from mins 9.20 to - 12.33 mins for reference)
The interviewer says Donald Emmerson .. was critical of Kishore Mahbubani, as not sufficiently critical nor acknowledging the huge number of deaths of the Chinese people - mentioned here as over 40 mn by the authoritarian Chinese Govt, that was directly responsible for these deaths..( other global scholars BTW have put the numbers that died at between 60-80 mn people who died between 1948 - early 1970s.!!)
THAT was Donald Emerson's (DE) criticism of Mahbubani (KM) - .. with Emmerson considering him Mahbubani unabashedly praising & supporting the Chinese experiment & modern history & great achievements.
Kishore Mahbubani, replies in this interview to the interviewer's question asking Kishore Mahbubani what he thought of that criticism..
Meaning - the interviewer asks Kishore Mahbubani (KM) - how valid he KM thinks.. was Don Emmerson's (DE) criticism (& apparent strong dislike ) of Kishore Mahbubani -(KM) how justified (or incorrect) he Kishore Mahbubani felt or thought was Don Emmerson's criticism.
KM explains the criticism as his understanding, was that DE's criticism arose from his, DE's, eclipse in scholarly circles, from the time that people started listening to & following KM's writings & talks, presentations in scholarly circles globally..
And that this seemed to be a personal reaction, (effectively of pique, pettiness & spite), against KM who had eclipsed him (DE) on the global scholar stage - globally - re. the SE Asian subject matter & stage globally. So much So that DE was now scored as of much lower status & relevance in academic circles than KM .. ESP on the Asean & Chinese subjects, politics & academics - globally.
Though KM doesn't mention it, there well could be embedded, hidden/ concealed/masked hostility by DE against KM - & hence criticism by DE on KM's views, writings, presentations, positions etc - based more on - enmity, jealousy or even racism - white man vs Brown man, Or Westerner versus Asian - views, divergent views, ascendancy of Asian views over western white man's views on Asian subjects like China & ASEAN.. etc etc.. OR just plain old petty jealousies.. that have resulted in this smouldering charged criticism by DE against KM.
As KM also points out- DE was limited to Indonesia, that was his focus, competence sphere, and the reason he emerged into the academic talk show global circuit - as his specialisation.. Indonesia.
That DE was no Chinese scholar... and didn't have any credentials or expertise or track record in that area of understanding, knowing &/OR Decoding the China history & experience..
    __
And THAT is REALLY the KEY POINT in answering DE's criticism of KM.. and his views & explanation of the Chinese experience, miracle.

The peddle about 40 millions, couple of things, first it is a upper limit projection (by CIA but I won't do ad hominem here) including "deaths" counted as not not giving birth. Second, China life expectancy improved from from 40 to 61 under Mao in 25 years. Let's just put it this way US took 55 years from 1880-1935 to do the same thing. Even during 1959-1961.
Another thing, 1 million Covid deaths in US resulted in drop life expectancy of 1 year. If drop of 0.3% population can decrease life expectancy of a much much more develop society, logic will tell us a drop of 6% population should decrease life expectancy even more.
The 1959-1961 famine is cause by both natural disaster and poor policy management, the harrowing account of the famine is well documented, poor economic performance. There interests to both play up or play down the number of deaths famine during then and during now, both does not help (it was probably quite obvious given that Cultural Revolution was launched in part due to playing up the famine death)

IMO, there's one God, but many ways of worshipping ... there's one Life, but many ways of living to the fullest ... there's one ideology of "government by the people, of the people & for the people," but many different political paths & systems (evolved & shaped by the historical materialist conditions of each country) to achieve and implement it for the common good.
It is rather monopolistic, selfish, hegemonic undemocratic to insist that there is only one correct way of understanding God, living a Life, and serving the People.
