Last night I had a dream where it was revealed to me that Godzilla is a shotoclone, and I looked it up and apparently I'm not the first person to make that joke.
Heavily agree with the conclusion. I feel like fighting games overall should add more to the mechanical/executional skill ceiling again so players have more ways to improve express their skills. Most games nowadays let you pick up a character within just a week or so and even tournament players can get multiple characters ready to perform at a top level. Appreciate the video with little cuts showing were you struggled and you figuring out the tricky parts of the combo as well!
I can't say I agree with his point on input buffers homogenizing combos. 1-frame links were always an arbitrary execution barrier that didn't make things 'samey' by being solved.
Strongly disagree. It wasn't 1 frame links, it was the fact that there was an extremely wide field of potential combo options, including obscure and niche conversions potentially involving 1 frame links, and including variation based on hitbox/hurtbox character specific interactions. Combo systems are extremely streamlined now in sfv/sf6 and developers have come up with other strategies to make the combo experience unique. 1-frame links are not "arbitrary". They were often used as alternative optimization options that weren't always necessary to pilot a character. Sometimes they were too integral to a characters main gameplan for sure (sf4 Vega comes to mind), but just saying "1-frame = arbitrary" is a vast over simplification of a much more robust combo system that allowed for vastly more variety and exploration than exists for a lot of the cast in 5/6
There is no delay cancel needed for advanced 3 trial. You just need to delay the neutral jump HK for it to hit deep. It also works with HP but the hitbox is higher so it need to be delayed more. You can cancel the OD fireball normally
terrys combos are driving me insane. having to time everything manually is so fucking hard. i get the cancel from tackle to burn knuckle to lvl3 one out of 100 times and ive tried for 2 hours, lol.
If you’re struggling to level 3 after a heavy burn knuckle it’s because you’re doing it after Terry is airborne during the burn knuckle. There is a moment where Terry is off the ground near the end of the H. Burn knuckle, the level 3 won’t register. You need to do it while he’s still level to the ground during the animation
@@atlas529 i dont get the cancel timing down from tackle to burn knuckle, i always do it either too early or too late. i know that you can only cancel the start of burn knuckle.
You need to do more delay between the tackle and the burn knuckle. You can wait until they're about to hit the ground before you cancel to burn knuckle
Brian please help! I cannot do mp dash punch, lvl 3 with Terry to save my life. I got it like once out of like fifty tries in training mode. My inputs are clean, it has to be some kind of timing trick. Why cant I get this crap to super cancel consistently? I'm trying to do intermediate #12 but I know its not the trick in the video (delay after the tackle) because I cant get the super cancel to come out even if i just do raw dash punch > super 3
you don't need to delay the cancel, its just the fireball has zero recovery. now if you do delay the cancel, you get a +8 situation which lets you do crouch mk target combo into level 1, level 1. unoptimal flashy combo
It's really weird, you gotta do the power charge, wait for a split second and then cancel. If done too soon you will get less hits, if done too late you'll whiff crack shoot completely
With all these options, I can feel Terry is gonna be around high mid-tier or low high tier. Mainly cuz of how difficult his combos can be. I can’t wait to see him in tournaments tho!!
Honestly, id take a hit to the damage terry can do just to make his pushback combo more reliable its so situational when you can get max damage with this character.
Most people know Terry from Fighting Ex Layer and Smash Ultimate, but did you know he's also been a mainstay in the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series for about 30 years? Also he knows Geese from Tekken, but nobody can remember if they're friends or not.

Everyone was worried about Terry being 'another shoto' so it's good he's different and complicated in some ways. Helps the game not feel so samey.
Sf characters are so boring compared to kof, feels like endless shotos
I don't use hitbox but getting an explanation of how to pull off DP input using one is a neat detail and seems pretty easy done that way 12:55

Sf6 especially can do this because of Modern and Dynamic controls making it for beginners easier
Thanks for going over this. When I do the tutorials, I feel a bit silly, but if even you benefit from the help, that's nice to know.
"this is the part where I start forgetting the moves" with my dislexic brain this happens to me halfway into the intermediates haha
Watching your content from Puerto Rico, Brian! Love your videos!
