  • Mollie Hemingway spoke on October 3, 2019 during the 175th Anniversary Celebration.
Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

Whenever I hear classic liberal I immediately think libertarian. Marxists hijacked the word liberal like Hitler hijacked the swastika, and now forever tainted.
I graduated school in 2001 and was fairly leftist. After a few years out of the public education system I noticed a lot of odd things, like why CBS only ever railed on Bush. I don't care for Bush, but id vote for him again before Gore or Kerry. Not once did I ever feel like I was getting the whole arguement, or actual debates. My politics changed and I found myself half conservative half libertarian.
My epiphany happened shortly after high school, makes me wonder if over people ever had one. I never read, "I used to be a conservative, but now I'm a progressive", it's always vica versa

William Harvey She was depicted in Greek Art with a Helmet on her head. She held the Spear of Knowledge in her right hand, poised to strike at the Serpent of Ignorance writhing under her foot. The large Helmet denoted that she waged invisibly a silent war against Sloth and Ignorance. She was usually placed on the Greek Temples with a Golden Spear in her hand. When the morning rays of the sun glinted on the weapon, causing it apparently to tremble, the common people were in the habit of saying smilingly : "Athena is Shaking her Spear again." She was thus known as "the Spear Shaker" or the "Shaker of the Spear.”

PF, pls tell us that you are being SARCASTIC! She's not stupid --- the fact that she is able to attract a number of listeners does say something about her abilities --- but, we on the Right, do we not ALREADY HAVE a boatload of PROBLEM FINDERS --- we ALL KNOW what the problems are; the major ones, anyway --- we NEED PROBLEM SOLVERS. Also, PLEASE GET HER an EDITOR ... and inform her of the CORRECT DEFINITION of English words.

    • @TheVenge
      @TheVenge 5 лет назад +3

@@johnk2452 Somewhere at the start of what she was saying, I had the same thought: she's good at highlighting problems, but what we really need are problem solvers. However, I had to admit to myself (hopefully this internal conversation doesn't mean I'm crazy! :P ) that we can't solve problems without identifying them. We might have a small army of "problem finders", but there are very few individual "problem finders" who are able to pull the topics all together, and she seems quite able at this.
As for the problem solver consideration, remember the cultural war we're in is being fought in the hearts and minds of those in the culture. How does one fight that war? The answer is that we must all fight it at the grass roots. The Progressive Left fights their side of the war, targeting the same hearts and minds, en masse -- using the news and entertainment media, and education. Our job is tougher: we should not fight en masse, else we become them. The best we can do at the macro level is employ wrecking ball types like Trump, and hopefully others to come if necessary.
In effect, *we* are the problem solvers. This requires that each of us become more studious and learned on the topics than the average individual we oppose.

    • @johnk2452
      @johnk2452 5 лет назад +1

@@TheVenge thanks much for your reading and responding to my comment. In general, I suspect that you and I would agree on the majority of items; however, here's my response coming from the dropping of the other shoe ... most of them coming from my perspective of what I would hope a person of Hemmingway's PROFESSIONAL CALIBRE would do:
[1] at the outset, something like informing her audience, would be in order, that her focus would be going through HER individually-tailored litany of national challenges --- and, not just dive-in, as she did, into her retelling and expounding of same --- and that, in the Q/A she would prioritize discussion of PROBLEM-SOLVING. Or, better yet, make problem-solving the great majority of her presentation.
[2] Next, I will quibble with you and argue that we don't have a small army; rather, that we have a LARGE ARMY of PROBLEM FINDERS --- the majority of people would much prefer to focus on the "bitching" angle of most conversations --- and, that in a nation which SUPPOSEDLY is SELF-GOVERNING, the great majority of us should be PROBLEM SOLVERS. [This is in agreement with one of your closing sentences].
The proof that we are NOT such is the OBVIOUS FACT that we have untold 1000s of SELF-SERVING blowhard JUDAS politicians that, for a small price --- jingle-jingle, there goes our tax dollars --- they will be HAPPY to live like ROYALTY, off of the theft of our tax dollars, and "solve" our problems for us ... and that WAY TOO MANY of us have bought into this flim-flam schtick and we, most ignorantly, time and again, re-elect these JUDASes.
Oh, yeah, they will SOLVE our problems, but, most likely, not the way that We The People want, and BECAUSE during the past several decades, we have surrendered our SELF-GOVERNING responsibilities to such JUDASes, we NOW have the problems that we have. IOW, the PROBLEM is NOT the JUDAS politicians --- they will always be there --- rather, it is We The People, through our systemic and chronic ignorance, who have repeatedly and selfishly made so many bad choices ... where these immoral and corrupt politicians KNOW this, and that, again and again, they CAN dupe us into having us reelect them.
[3] here, I will be the harshest: but here I do also get into the PROBLEM-SOLVING portion of this discussion: your next to last paragraph is ALL WRONG ... at least as our Founders/Framers intended and designed our nation. Yes, we must fight at the grassroots, but, as LEGAL UNITED American Citizens, we MUST fight it en masse. To address this, here is my challenge to you and all:
read [or re-read] our DOI. I mean, really read it ... and take in every crucial notion and American value. This and the reading our Constitution is not the full solution, but, it will lead to a good portion of it.
In total our DOI is less than 1500 words; where, aside from the list of grievances against the King, the meat of this document is just 500 words. EVERY young American graduating from GRADE SCHOOL --- and ALL adults --- should be required to read, understand and appreciate this document ... word for word, notion by notion.
Our NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT --- our NATIONAL SCANDAL --- is that SO FEW --- I will bet less than 10% of LEGAL Americans can explain our crucial FOUNDATIONAL AMERICAN VALUES as found inside this document; you know, this NATIONAL document to which, AS LEGAL CITIZENS, we have ALL agreed. As LEGAL citizens we are the ones, referred to within the DOI, who must be sot some modest degree educated ... in order to provide the CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED.
Further, and, perhaps even more importantly, this document DEFINES us as Americans!
The fact that so few of us, beyond a few phrases and buzz-words, are aware of what has been written within --- the crucial messages which it conveys and to which we have AGREED --- IS an EMBARRASSMENT of NATIONAL proportions. [Thank you NOT govt indoctrination centers, aka, public schools!]
This systemic IGNORANCE is NOT going to change overnight --- in fact, IMO, if we start now, it will take at least a few generations --- however, I believe that if more LEGAL Americans understood this document --- and, I am talking of at least 50% --- then, we would not have HALF the challenges --- cultural, economic, spiritual, etc --- at their degree of seriousness, which we face currently.
Here is the general [national] proposal ... this is the heart of the PROBLEM-SOLVING: [1] all of our taxpayer-supported education systems must be open to free and fair competition; and, [2] NO such institute of education can get a single dime of TAXPAYER MONEY unless, as part of their CORE CURRICULUM --- yes, our REAL COMMON CORE --- they MANDATE comprehensive CIVICS instructions regarding our DOI, Constitution, BOR and etc.
Such should be so easy, I find it most embarrassing that there is even a need to write such things --- in itself, that is a testament to how deeply the DemonRat LEFT has duped and brainwashed our nation --- however, this is because those on the LEFT --- the REAL FASCISTS --- will fight against this tooth and nail.
So, in closing, I will quibble with you on one last item: you wrote that our job is tougher, but, relatively speaking it will be far less so than that of our Founders and Framers ... who believed so much in our nation and a culture of liberty that many were willing to sacrifice all, including their lives.
I suspect that you will agree that way too many Americans believe that they have no need to fight --- yes, really fight --- for our liberties and freedoms ... and that is where we are so disappointing, yet, correctable, and, toward that objective, our problem solving will need to focus on basic education of our TRUE American foundational values ... of which so many Americans are simply so ignorant.

Enjoyed the lecture, Mrs. Hemingway. The way you generate an interest in Liberty is to try to break the back of "collective security". You said that we, as a society, are to secure, too comfortable. Spot on. Thr thing you failed to mention, though, is that, no matter the membership in a collective, people always act in self-interest. If you can convince the young people I used to teach that collectively there more at risk than taking the gamble as individuals, then they can allow and appropriate sense of self-interest to guide their thoughts and actions. That self-interest, blended with similar self-interests in one'd neighborhood, starts to make a difference for the Republic. The people of Massachusetts were for independence from England in ways different from the people from Pennsylvania, but they were each focused on Independence.

Dear Hillsdale: Thank you for what you are doing. The issues ahead of America are both moral and spiritual in nature, not primarily political. The clock is winding down. As the nation has turned away from God’s moral laws and Truth (with a capital T), we have lost our foundations which were built directly on God and Jesus and the framers intent for Republic built on individual freedom and moral responsibility under God. Our sins of turning away from God in the public square has enabled the barbarians to rise up within us just as our framers warned us. We are one small step away from loosing everything. Please empower your listeners to understand how late it is. it is no longer sufficient to soley teach the US constitution-its only fit for a moral people-a large segment of the nation has lost its moral compass. Its also time to teach survival.

Jefferson's original idea was to keep the nationS small, and secession was built into the plan of expansion of the country. As the nation grew, states were supposed to secede and become new nations, perhaps keeping some kind of alliance with the other colonies. He, and those founders who were not globalists, understood well the fatality of large government.
The larger it is, the harder it is to change anything, and the easier it is to step over and ignore the people and remove their rights.
But soon the Hamiltonians took over, and Lincoln sealed our fate as a huge and growing government power, and putting us in permanent debt to our masters, the banks. Then history was altered to make it all look like not only the best way, but the intended way of the founders.
Of course, like every evil brought in by big government, it rode in on a white horse [a supposed "good cause"] so that people would accept it. This time the horse was "anti-slavery" even though Lincoln himself admitted that the war had zero to do with slavery.

      .
If lawmakers had to live by every law they make, just as we do, they would be very careful which laws they allowed to pass.
But once they can make "rules for thee but not for me" - like one health care plan for you, and a better one for them - there is no end to the burdens they will impose on you and the rights they will infringe.

The RNC bailed out both McConnell and McCain in their last primaries against fiscally conservative Tea Party challengers. That last thing the Establishment wants is financially responsible government.
The Tea Party are mostly libertarian-leaning fiscal conservatives who want to change the Republican Party from with in, and make them walk the walk that the GOP has always talked: smaller government, lower taxes, less regulation, and more economic freedom. An important point that Mrs. Hemingway brings out is the growth and battle that political conservatives are having with trying to bring down this bureaucracy. It is my contention that what is true in the political sphere is also true in the religious sphere. As a confessional Lutheran pastor fighting the bureaucracy within the church is even MORE critical that the one within politics. These two bureaucracies, although in different spheres, show many similarities. That is so because both are comprised of sinful people. The thinking and arguments in one often are reflected in the other. To that end, here is an article that I wrote some years back employing a word created by the late brilliant and much loved seminary professor, Kurt Marquart. For it is he, looking at his own church body (L.C.M.S.) that he coined the term, "Bureaucratitis". Note how easily this could be addressing the bureaucracy within the U.S. and how fidelity to God's Word could refer to fidelity to the U.S. Constitution in the political sphere. "Bureaucratitis" within the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
After almost twenty-five years as a pastor in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod I see a condition that is afflicting many among the ranks of both clergy and laity alike. As the A.C.E.L.C. (Association of Confessing Evangelical Lutheran Congregations) continues it’s desire to address where our beloved synod has departed from our Scriptural and Confessional heritage in both doctrine and practice, it is my personal opinion that this condition that plagues so many prevents us from attacking the issue in a united front. The disease of which I speak is that coined by the late Kurt Marquart, "bureaucratitis".
This condition is one where we have become more concerned about form than content. We are more concerned about following constitution, by-laws, convention resolutions, etc. than we are the Word of God. When many of my conservative brethren received the release of our original letter of concern over the state of the synod, we were taken to task for what we had done. However, no one, to my knowledge, has ever offered any evidence against the veracity of our statement. On more than one occasion I have had a confessional brother pastor respond to my objection and discontent with what is publicly occurring within one of our congregations or an event sponsored by a district by advising me to make sure and follow all of the appropriate procedures outlined in our constitution and by-laws.
Though I do not wish to offend anyone with what I am about to say, I can no longer restrain myself from shouting: "I DON’T CARE WHAT THE CONSTITUTION OR BY-LAWS SAY. What I am motivated by is Scripture and The Confessions." Yes, I know, some will understand me to be saying that I feel that those who desire to adhere to the constitution and by-laws are not concerned about Scripture or The Confessions. That, I am not saying. I am simply mirroring what Marquart wrote about in his article a number of years ago. It is not that all those who turn to these documents are in any way intentionally minimizing the centrality of God’s Word or that they somehow are less faithful in such matters than myself.
The point which Marquart made, and I fully agree with, is that sometimes when a bureaucracy grows beyond a certain point it takes on a life of its own. A bureaucracy becomes self-sustaining. The concern within a bureaucracy is that it’s rules and regulations are being followed. And anything that is taken to threaten that bureaucracy is viewed as antagonistic to the whole.
I am also not advocating chaos and disorder by rejecting the need for a rule of order. However, when the organization, mechanism, machinery becomes that which is to be protected, then we have a real problem.
How does this "bureaucratitis" show itself in a practical way within our synod? When we enact so many layers of official requirements in order to deal with a theological issue (such as in the Matthew Becker case), then "bureaucratitis" is in evidence. When district presidents are more concerned about maintaining collegiality among themselves rather than call another d.p. to repentance when he, or his district with his approval and support, have publicly advocated a doctrine or practice that the synod has historically and continuously condemned as unbiblical, then "bureaucratitis" is in evidence. When the synodical president and a district president are found guilty of sinning against the First and Second Commandments according to due process but the pronouncement is overturned due to a reading of a convention bylaw (a false reading at that) and no discipline is ever invoked and the whole matter is simply forgotten by synodical officials, then "bureaucratitis" is in evidence. When a pastor, or layperson, speaks out against the synod and he or she is spoken of as not "loving our mother church" or is labeled as schismatic, then "bureaucratitis" is in evidence. When a professor accuses you of being in jeopardy of losing your eternal salvation on account of your fear of what the synod is becoming and believing that it is necessary to speak out against the departures from our historic insistence on unity in doctrine and practice, "bureaucratitis" is in evidence. When we bring forth resolution after resolution on issues affecting our synod and they do not make it to the floor or even if they do and are voted in, nothing really ever comes of it, the issues remained unresolved, then "bureaucratitis" is in evidence.
In looking back over the past 30 years where I have been active in the synods politics, I have seen a continuous decline in fidelity to our insistence on Scripture being the sole authority in the church and The Confessions as a faithful exposition to that Word. While the right words, the correct mantras continue to be employed with much pomp and circumstance throughout our synod, those twin beacons of truth, the former being the foundation for the latter, recess further and further into the distance and maintaining "good order" and peace within the ranks is the rule of the day. "Bureaucratitis" is in full bloom!
Again, let me make something perfectly clear: I am not advocating anarchy. Neither am I suggesting that we throw out our constitution or by-laws or any such thing. What I am convinced we need to do is recognize that in many ways we, yes I said "we", have allowed man-made rules of order and manner of operations to interfere with, and in some instances supplant, our historic insistence on complete unity among us as Lutherans. This insistence was seen taking place during the last century where, during a convention, a pastor advocated a theological position contrary to Scripture, and therefore our historical position, and the convention came to a halt so that the erring brother could be pastorally and lovingly corrected. And once that had taken place the convention resumed. If we tried to follow that procedure today we could not complete a convention.
Let us, like the Apostle Paul in correcting Peter (Gal. 2:11ff) and as advocated in The Large Catechism, Eighth Commandment (par. 284), have the faithfulness, pastoral love, and strength of conviction, to deal with public departures from Scripture and The Confessions, either in doctrine or practice, openly, publically, that all may be admonished in the truth. Let us cease this fear of "disturbing the peace" within our synod, thereby keeping us from truly dealing with so many issues that have divided our synod for far too long. Let us trust God to preserve the visible organization that is the Missouri Synod believing that it is more important to be faithful than preserve a heritage if it has, in fact, abandoned the very reason it came into existence in the first place. If these words sound rather harsh and radical or are viewed to reflect antagonism toward this synod (a synod for which I intend to fight for with every fiber of my being), let me assure anyone who reads these words, nothing could be further from the truth. I am simply echoing words spoken by the first president of the synod C.F.W. Walther at the first convention. For it was Walther himself who closed his opening sermon with these words,
""Whether our Synod gains friends or makes enemies, wins honor or invites disgrace, grows or declines in numbers, brings peace or incites enmity, all this must be unimportant to us--just so our Synod may keep the jewel of purity of doctrine and knowledge. However, should our Synod ever grow indifferent toward purity of doctrine, through ingratitude forget this prize, or betray or barter it away to the false church, then let our church body perish and the name ‘Missourian’ decay in disgrace."

We all have been in a war since before we came down to this earth to live in our mortal tabernacles. The war in heaven was about standing up against the rebellion of Satan and his disobedience. Our battle is still raging because ultimately the war is for the minds of men and defending what's right. Our bodies were the precious gift given to us for our valiant fight in heaven and our promise to our heavenly Father that we would continue to stand up for what is right and obey Him on our mortal journey; the Devil was cast down without a body and persists in seeking ours so that he can have power over us to do his bidding because he is miserable and wants us all to be as miserable as he is. He hates us and will continue to do everything he can to destroy every last one of us. Choose the right folks and be blessed from on high in all your doings.
