      Yep. In the novel, it was Judge's barking that told Campbell that Anna was hiding a secret and she wasn't being truthful. He picked up on the hint from his dog and questioned her again in her reasons for suing for medical emancipation. It was only then Anna finally confessed she did it for Kate because she had been wanting to die.

    Sara and Brian abused all three of their kids. They neglected Jesse, physically forced Anna into countless amounts of operations that had only benefits for Kate. And finally they also forced Kate into operations she didn’t want to have. I’m glad Brian realised pretty quickly what he had been doing to his kids, and tried to make it better.

But we can still sympathise with her because of the pressure of the situation and because she was in denial of hurting her children. They eventually stopped and fixed their mistakes. @ladyfire44 6 лет назад +178

      Yep. It took Brian and Jesse confronting Sara in court to make her see where she was in the wrong. It wasn't her decision to make, but rather Kate's because she had been ready to die for a long time. Brian, Jesse and Anna knew this, but Sara ignored it. At some point, she stopped listening to her family and neglected them for it. Even the doctors and her older sister, Suzanne(Kelly in the film), knew she was endangering both Anna and Kate's lives by trying to make them go through the surgery. Suzanne warned Sara against it because of the risks involved for both sisters. She never listened to anyone and cared for her own interest. The family were really running out of options and Kate having Anna for medical emancipation was their last option to get her to listen. When Sara finally did, she realized how overzealous and selfish she's been. She felt guilty for neglecting her own family and the pain she caused in her children's lives. It was Kate who stood up for Anna and wanted her to have the quality of life she deserves.

      @Rebecca Bjelopera lol, that reply was for someone who mentioned marrow. I don't know how I even did that! But now that I see your response, I have to disagree with you as well. Even though it's fiction you have to understand the mom's mindset. The mom knows Anna. She knows Anna loves Kate and would give her a kidney in a second. She wouldn't have to force her. So when Anna refuses, her mom is freaking out because she knows Anna would do anything for Kate. She didn't see this coming. She is confused and didn't expect this because as I said, she knowsAnna wouldn't let Kate die. The thing is, she's 100% right. Anna would have not have let her die and would have given a kidney to Kate. She loves her big sis. The mom is not being selfish, she is desperate and in absolute shock for a valid reason, Anna is lying. This is a hearing about emancipation, not donation. People seem to think she took her daughter to court to get her kidney. I guess you can say she is selfish because she doesn't want to let Kate go, but I call that love.

    "Kate wants to die" "That's a lie/That's not true. She would have told me." "She did tell you" "She told you a million times. You didn't want to hear it." And there it is , right in front of Sara: the reason for everything. At some point, Sara stopped listening to not just Anna, or Jesse or even her husband, she stopped listening to Kate. I get why it happened; Sara wanted to be one of those people whose children beat insurmountable odds to survive cancer. What she didn't take into account was the fact it wasn't her decision. It's those who have the cancer who have to decide to fight or die. At some point, Kate didn't want to fight anymore, especially as she realized how much Anna and Jesse were suffering in comparison to her. So while Anna was willing to give up her kidney if Kate wanted it, Kate didn't want it. Instead she wanted Anna to stand up for herself since it wasn't Kate herself that Anna had to fight against: it was Sara who wanted Anna to believe Kate wanted Anna's kidney. Kate NEVER wanted Anna to used the way she had been. Court was the final option to get Sara to finally listen and realize that it was she was being selfish, not Anna. "Who stands up for Anna?" Kate does.

      When Anna told Sara this in the novel before the verdict, she was shocked by this. She later came to terms and wished Kate told her sooner, understanding that Anna didn't tell her because she needed to protect her sister. This movie version completely disrespected her own family and court was the last option to get her to listen to them. When Sara finally did, she realizes that obsession and overzealous behavior was her own fault. Kate stood up for Anna and did the right thing by refusing. Plus, Jesse had little to no involvement in the court during the book, unlike here which he did disrespected Anna and exposed Kate's involvement.

    • @TheAngelofFate17

      Karen Lacey but that wasn’t her decision to make.
      Kate was tired of fighting and it wasn’t right of Sara to refuse her to give her daughter that kind of peace because she didn’t want to let her go even though there was absolutely no way for her to survive anyway. She conceived Anna not out of love but to save her daughter’s life by constantly forcing her to be her donator, and never once asked how Anna felt and was only ever concerned with Kate’s well being.
      And that’s why Kate told Anna to stand up for herself and refuse to be a donator anymore because she never had that choice when they were kids.
      I get a mother wanting to save her child, I understand that. But when the child has no hope of surviving, and when they also just want to go peacefully, then that’s when -as heartbreaking as it is- to let them go, respect their wishes no matter how painful it is. Because it’s their lives and they shouldn’t have to be forced to live with those kind of conditions if they don’t want too.
      And that’s the opposite of what Sara did, instead of hearing her daughter out and respecting that she wants to just be at peace, she stopped listening to her a long time ago and basically was forcing her to stay alive even when she didn’t want to be anymore and forced Anna to give her sister blood and bone marrow.

The point of this scene is to show that the problem isn't Anna but Sara who refuses to listen to Kate's wishes because the idea of losing her is too much. By that refusal, she hurt everyone in her family. But here Anna, despite also not wanting to lose her sister, pushes through, not for the rights to her body, but in a way, for Kate's rights to hers.

    I always feel sad in this scene, because one reaction is always "the mom is justified, because any mother would fight as hard as possible and do anything to save their child" but then you remember that Anna is ALSO her child and the "do anything" is risking one child to save the other, treating Anna like spare parts. And I get that's why they had Anna in the first place, but you'd think she'd still love the girl as her child :(

    • @ladyfire44
      @ladyfire44 Год назад +7

      Truth was that Sara never loved any of her kids. She intentionally ignored Jesse, treated Anna like she's spare parts and focused too much of her energy in saving Kate's life. I get Sara was afraid of losing her older daughter to cancer. However, she also forgot that Jesse and Anna are also important in the family as well. To Sara, as long as both were healthy, they didn't need her to worry about them.
      When Brian found out about her plans to force more surgeries on their girls, he realized how wrong he was in having not stopped her sooner. He saw first hand that Jesse became a troublemaker due to Sara's neglect. For a long time both Anna and Kate wanted to stop the cancer treatments. They were both tired of Sara's selfishness and terrible behavior. Anna was tired of being in the hospital and missing out on her life. Kate was tired of dealing too many complications after her surgeries and wanted to die. When she told Brian about it, he immediately understood it's time to let her go. Unfortunately, Sara refused to let Kate go and this lead to serious conflicts in the family. I get she wanted to fulfill her dreams of being like those parents whose child survived cancer and is living their lives. At the same time, Sara went about it the wrong way. She was willing to sacrifice Anna's life and didn't care who got hurt as long as Kate was alive. At some point, Sara stopped listening to her family and the doctors when they warned her against the kidney transplant and let Kate go. The family were running out of options to make her listen to them. Kate finally convincing Anna to sue for medical emancipation and taking Sara to court was the family's last option.

    First of all, this is probably the most beautifully touching film I've ever seen -- I've seen it more times than I can count on my hands + feet and it still gets me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Second of all, this scene in particular hits very close to home for me -- I am not a diagnosed epileptic but have been having unprovoked seizures for the better part of 4 years ... Doctors haven't a clue what's causing them, and absolutely zero medications have worked for me to prevent my seizures ..... Luckily though, by the grace of God, Sunday marked four months without having a single seizure, which is a huge deal for me because I was having them 4-5x a month for the last four years. I pray every second of every day that I don't break this streak; after all, it's the longest I've gone without having them since I started having them in the first place. I relate so hard to this --- not having control over your own mind and body takes a serious toll on your life in every single solitary way, shape, + form. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I could use some good vibes + prayers sent my way to keep the seizures at bay ... I just desperately want control of my life back. 💔

    Im sick of people trying to justify Sara or make her out to be some caring, kind mother who made the wrong decision. She’s a horrible person, and an even worse mother. She might have been a good mother once, but not anymore. Yes, she wants to save her daughter. Yes she loves her child, no one is denying that. But guess what? That alone doesn’t make her a good mother at all. You can love someone and treat them horribly at the same time. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. I know she has her reasons, but lots of people have reasons for doing evil acts, but that doesn’t make those acts any less evil.
    Sara abuses, guilt trips, and gaslights Anna. She neglects and disrespects her son. She puts Kate through intense agony and dooms her to a slow, painful walk towards her end instead of a peaceful one, solely because she herself isn’t ready to accept the inevitable. This isn’t a case of a well intentioned parent making a mistake, and later recognizing it and owning up to it- it’s a case of a selfish, delusional woman who created a baby solely so she’d have spare parts for Kate, who didn’t even want or ask for it. This is a case of a woman who refuses to listen to her own family and hurts everyone around her because of it. She is evil, and while I do believe that everyone deserves some empathy, anyone who sees her as anything less than a monster is delusional themselves.

    There was a paragraph in the book that made me so choked up:
    It gets quiet for a moment, so all I can hear is the squelch of the windshield wipers. I slip my hands under my thighs, sit on them. "What you said at the trial ... do you really think I'll be amazing in ten years?"
    "Why, Anna Fitzgerald, are you fishing for compliments?"
    "Forget I said anything." He glances at me. "Yes, I do. I imagine you'll be breaking guy's hearts, or painting in Montmartre, or flying fighter jets, or hiking through undiscovered countries." He pauses. "Maybe all of the above."
    There was a time when, like Kate, I'd wanted to be a ballerina. But since then I've gone through a thousand different stages: I wanted to be an astronaut. I wanted to be a paleontologist. I wanted to be a backup singer for Aretha Franklin, a member of the Cabinet, a Yellowstone National Park ranger. Now, based on the day, I sometimes want to be a microsurgeon, a poet, a ghost hunter.
    Only one thing's a constant. "Ten years from now," I say, "I'd like to be Kate's sister."

    Sara was a horrible mother, and no one can tell me otherwise. She created a kid just to use that kid to save another one, and never took into account what she wanted. Actually scratch that- Sara never took into account what ANY of her kids wanted. Like the scene were Katie wants to go to the beach; the doctor even said there’s nothing wrong with going to the beach, and that Katie deserved to go to the beach. For god sake Katie is battling a hard ass battle of nonstop cancer, and Sara refused to let Katie go to the beach. Katie probably didn’t ask for much, and that’s the one thing she wanted. It even got to the point where her husband got physical with her.
    The whole court room scene showed Sara’s true intentions, this was never about Katie. This was about Sara, and how she refused to give up. Which okay is fine, but when your kid wants this battle to be over with and doesn’t want to be in pain. You can’t force your kid to live when they don’t want to, that’s not fair to anybody. Like they said “Katie would’ve told me” “she did” and the way the father even said “she did, a million times. You didn’t want to listen” Sara was a horrible mother, and the whole character pisses me off. Especially when it started to become less about Katie, and more about her and what she wanted. She created a child just to take parts out of it, then when she resisted: got mad that she resisted. You can’t create a kid; deconstruct them, treat them like they’re not human, and force them to do things they don’t want to do.
    Sara was an awful mother.

After Anna finally told the truth in why she was really suing for medical emancipation, she was in shock that Kate wanted to die for a long time and never told her. It was there Sara finally understands how much her family has been suffering from her terrible behavior, how Anna wanted to live her own life and accepts she needs to let Kate go.
      In the film, she was in denial and accused Jesse of lying to her about it. When Brian defends him and pointed out Sara's behavior in having not listened to their girls in what they wanted, it was from there she realized what she'd done.

I say this because the irony of the book ending was all for nothing and not what really happens will you have terminal illness. This ending was so sad but so true because she has stopped suffering and in the end she brings family the whole new perspective and they learn to love her and always know she is somewhere else but living their lives. But again this is what I believe

      Not really. When I read the book, it was unexpected. The novel almost gave Kate what she wanted and she was ready to die peacefully. However, Anna and Campbell were involved in a car accident. Anna died right away and her organs were transplanted to Kate via, Campbell. Kate explained that she almost relapsed until the organs began functioning well. The doctors believed it was successful, but she knew better and that it was Anna who died in her place. Kate also mentions that it was her sister's death that brought new perspective to the family. While, she, Jessie and Brian continued to love Anna wherever she is, Sara continued feeling insurmountable guilt for her behavior. She believed the death was her punishment for forcing Anna to donate everything from her body without asking her and retreated to her own world. Campbell and Julia married, while Jesse has reformed and graduated from police academy in spite of his criminal record. Kate is a ballet instructor. The film, while sad, gave Kate what she wanted.

    When this first came out i wanted to watch it with my mom but she wouldnt let me watch it with her. I had to watch it by my self because my mom knew she was gonna cry. My oldest brother was diagnosed with cancer when he was 12 I was 3 or 4. Luckly my brother survived and has been cancer free for many year. Because of my brother having cancer I have been able to go to camp since I was 4.The last 8 years I have been a camp counselor for this same camp.

    What if one day Kate needed a new lung?
    You can live with a single lung as well right?
    Is a horrible life but is a life.
    Would still still have made Anna donate?
    What about the heart?
    She was treating her youngest child like she was a lab rat or a fridge from where you take whatever you want.

    This whole thing could of been avoided if Kate was the one to sue to end her treatment. The mom said it herself, the minimal age for a person to get medical emancipation is 14. And the dad said they've been doing this for 14 years. That means Kate is at least 14, thus old enough to make medical decisions for herself under the law. Once she realized she couldn't go through with the pain anymore, not to mention not wanting Anna to lose her chance at a healthy life due to a risky operation, Kate should of told her mom the truth. And if Sara tried to force the matter, which appears to be the case, then Kate would of been able to sue and most likely win to decide she wants to stop her treatment and pass away peacefully.

    Its not that her sister was unwilling to donate her kidney...because she was willing. Her older sister loved her so much she wanted her to have a full life. She didnt want her to be on drugs or have to watch her fluid intake. She wanted her sister to be able to do all the things she couldnt. She knew her body wasnt going to make it and felt the surgery was pointless and would only cause her little sister to unnecessarily suffer.

It wasn’t a great place to have a seizure there were tables and chairs and not a lot of room, so I had to walk out and she got angry at me and at that point I blacked out and that’s all I remember.

    Its so heart wrenching that your whole existence was just for your body parts.😪. Parents sometimes act so mean and bias among their kids. I remember how my parents use to shout and scold me on my elder sister's mistake just because they didn't wanted to affect her mental health. They use to say we are doing this out of love. This doesn't mean that we don't love our family however its like we are done being a scapegoat all the time.

      I think I read somewhere that they felt that a more logical and likely ending would be the one from the film.
      But it really changed the whole story. The entire book leads up to the last chapter and the ending. And it literally is the best 3 pages of the book. Here's a link to my favorite quote:

      Katie Marie it’s really not that simple. The mother just wanted to spend a little longer with her daughter, she wasn’t ready to let her go because of how much she loved her.

    • @katiemarie287
      @katiemarie287 4 года назад +9

      Tee M It is simple. You don’t have another child just to save one you already have. It’s not fair to that child you’re bringing into the world. It’s practically abuse. Imagine growing up that way? Knowing you were only born to save your older sibling?

    • @toluo7198
      @toluo7198 4 года назад

      Katie Marie yes well you are also not looking at it from the mother’s perspective, only yours. Yes what she did is wrong but she didn’t have bad intentions. SHE JUST WANTED HER CHILD TO LIVE LONGER. Also in the movie Anna wants to help her sister but Kate wants to die. Anna would still have willingly given her body to Kate, but Kate said no. That’s the only reason she wanted to stop.

    I cannot even begin to imagine what it is like in those little girl's shoes. They didn't even bother to hide the fact that she was solely born as a bag of spare parts for her older sister. Even the older sister saw it and was disgusted by it too.
    I know, as parents, we want to do everything and anything to protect and ensure our children survive, but to create another whole life and child to subject them to the painful invasive procedures like this in order to POTENTIALLY save the life of your other child. There has to be some kind of policing of this!
    I was born into a family who didn't want me, who loathed my very existence and I thought that was bad, but I can't even imagine the torment of being born solely for the purpose of being nothing more than a spare parts factory with no choice in your own body because of exactly what the mother was being in this clip.
