- This is the story of my Mothers search to find out about her birth parents.
My Mothers story begins when she was born on 31st May 1932 at the Rotunda Hospital Dublin. According to records she was the daughter of John O’Reilly, a labourer residing at 54 Blessington Street in Dublin and Margaret Brady.
Soon after her birth she was fostered from the Mother & Baby Club in Temple Street Hospital in Dublin to a Mrs. Sheridan who lived in Cabra in Dublin.
Her birth Mother, Margaret Brady, was born roughly around 1910, possibly in Co. Cavan it was suggested that John O’Reilly may have also come from Co. Cavan.
The birth certificate for my mother suggests that her parents were married. However, it is quite possible that Margaret Brady gave false information when she was admitted to the Rotunda and presented herself as a married woman. The fact that John O’Reilly was not recorded on Mary’s baptismal certificate supports this possibility. Given the time period in 1930’s Ireland, an unmarried mother would have been shunned and whilst she may have been prepared to lie and pretend to be married to the medical staff in the Rotunda it is unlikely she would have done the same and lied to the catholic priest baptising her child.
The baptismal certificate recorded Margaret as Margaret O’Reilly and not Brady and no father was recorded on the baptismal certificate.
This is a very sad story one which has been frustrated by the non-cooperation of the Rotunda Hospital and their refusal to release any information on the birth mother Margaret Brady (a woman now probably long dead) under nonsensical Freedom of Information Legislation.
If any of my mother’s story rings a bell with anyone out there or if you can help, please let us know. It’s been five years since this show was broadcast in 2012 and we’re no further along in our search - we may be clutching at straws but we will continue the search for my mother an incredible lady.

I know they said the census during 1911 was missing but couldn''t they have checked the ones before and after?
This is crazy that she could not gain info.
Why didnt they search the Catholic churches archives??? They keep records of births, baptisms, first communions, confirmations marriages, deaths, these would all have information
It could be that your mother's father was protestant while her mother was Catholic. DNA might help locate relatives that knew her parents. Hope this helps.
Her mother would be dead by now so they are not protecting anyone but the Catholic Church. She deserves to know where she came from. Poor Mary. I feel heartbroken for her.
Why didn't they take all the Margarets and focus on the ones who were in childbearing age?, or if she was Baptised then look at Catholic records in age group of Margarets? It might have helped to get the list down just a bit.
So sad for her.
OOH wish i could get on this program would love to know about My grandfathers mother
Dna? Relatives through her and a DNA search?
Any update?!
That was stupid. Why didn't they do a DNA test?
Hi there not sure as to what you are referring as "stupid" we did carry out DNA testing post this video being made. Given the lack of information available on my mother's birth mother it is hard to identify anything less than a 3rd or 4th removed cousin via Ancestry.Com or GED Match etc. This is why we were looking for birth records.Unless you have solid information on who your comparing DNA against its like a billion to one lottery finding a close match.
All the best

@@seanmcdonagh7583 I wasn't referring to your family. I was referring to the TV show. They should have ran a DNA test and had professionals see if they could match your family with any existing family. It's like an artist trying to paint a picture, but only purchasing one color of paint.
I hope you will be successful in finding your roots. I'm sorry and apologize for giving the you the impression I was talking about you and your family. I actually commented because I felt so bad that you were left empty handed and was angry that the TV show let you down by not using all resources available.
Hi there thank you for the reply and fully appreciate the sentiment.. its hard to pick that up sometimes with text. Thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately our mother passed away in late 2017 so she didn't get her answers but our search continues on her behalf.❤
@@seanmcdonagh7583 I'm so terribly sorry to hear. That's really depressing and must be hard for the family knowing that she never got to find out. I hope at least you guys will merit what she wasn't able to. :(
There is a group on Facebook called DNA detectives. They have people on there that are called search angels and if you reach out on there I’m sure someone would help!
Hopefully they now have been able to do a DNA search.
Why couldn't they phone all of those Margarets? I'm sure now dna would help her find her!
She was born in 1932. All those Margarets are long dead. For example, if her mother was 20 at birth, she would have been born in 1912. that would make her 111 today. Heck, even if she had her at 15 she would be 106.
So why did they not ask her for a DNA test ?
use dna
