Bro for real there are some really great airforce youtubers out there, but hands down you're the realest with us. The problem with a lot of others is that they seem to be giving advice aimed towards single kids coming straight out of high school which only helps so much in my situation. You're giving that mature advice aimed more towards an older audience which of course the high schoolers can apply early on. Good stuff bro keep it up💪💯

22 years TSgt retired, I told people that as long as I gave them some kind of lesson learned from interacting with me, good. If I taught you nothing other than "I don't want to be like THAT NCO/Airman" then that is GREAT! Of course I always tried to be a good NCO/Airman. I did not always reach that goal though....but I never gave up trying. Good video Isiah!

The 'real' Air Force happens on deployment not at the home drome. That's where the Air Force family forms, relationships are built and camaraderie becomes a reality. Glad to hear you experienced the difference.
Hello, folks. I've been in the Louisiana Air National Guard (Reserve component of the Air Force) for over 24 years now. I enlisted in 1995 as an E1 and crossed over to the dark side (commissioned) in 2008. Us in the Guard usually deploy more than our active duty counterparts and we have to be as prepared as our active duty brethren and sisters. Raymond, you make some excellent points here. You are deployed with my brother now in the same location (he's active duty as well, but from a different base and I dare say different AFSC) and joined over three years ago as well. I had the pleasures of swearing him in, to the delight of our mother and myself I may add. This career has taken me places I wouldn't have ever dreamed of and I am extremely grateful for the opportunities.
I wanted to add that prior enlisted officers usually get the point of ensuring that our subordinates understand that we see all of us as intergral parts of the same team. Every shop, team, detail, or group of people that I led or lead know me and know that I see and respect the individual first, regardless of rank, duties and responsibilities. This, of course, doesn't mean that I disregard the ranking structure: I would never do that. Some folks, not many, think that the rank makes them and they allow the uniform to 'prop them up,' so to speak. The good thing about being part time military is that I had an almost 20 year law enforcement career simultaneously with my military career and I have worn many uniforms and been empowered with lots of responsibilities as well as been in many dangerous situations. This was well before I commissioned, so that helped me to better understand how and when to exert my position of authority. No matter how I do this, if I have to administer disciplinary action (very rare for me) or laud one's accomplishments, I do them all equally with RESPECT. I was taught to be respectful of people long before I chose any of my careers.
I'm currently on my 10th of 11th deployment (I lost count, really) and as you correctly stated, they all are different in their own ways and some are more dangerous than others. My job is more administrative things, but we are all still subjected to the dangers of being in the military and deployed as you know. I will state this: never in a million years would I have thought my life would be where it is now. I finished my second Master's Degree program through finishing my PME (Air Command and Staff College for me), enjoying this great deployment and learning a new culture. I'm from the ghetto in uptown New Orleans, so I had humble beginnings and in no way am bragging or boasting, just hoping and praying that I could inspire just one person that listens to your video and reads these comments and understand that if I can do it, so can they. Great work Mr. Raymond and keep pushing forward! Be safe, check your six and remember to look up... :-)
Also to add about officers' morale boosters with enlisted (playing ball, etc.); Maaaaan, that General KNEW he couldn't whip yall! He did that to give yall the good vibes of whipping him! lol Those ARE good morale boosters and that's why we (officers) do stuff like that. I don't play sports, but I involve myself other ways (bowling, jogging, etc.) with them that they know we all are human. Guard is also a little different where we are citizens when not at drill so we technically can't tell anyone what to do unless they're on orders or being put on orders (example: federal and state emergencies such as man-made and natural disasters, etc.). That is always good though when the officers come down from their levels and actually interact with enlisted. It's not that we don't want to do that more often, it's just that we have LOTS of responsibilities that require LOTS of our attention throughout the day....

My son graduated last week from BT! He is now at tech school for security forces! I pray to God he makes it thru! I know it’s harder than BT
He will be fine! Bmt is much more difficult in my Opinion. Atleast now he can take naps, use his cell phone, talk to family and friends ect. None of which were possible in bmt. He will be fine trust me🖤

life is different at every base when you PCS you will see so many different types of leadership, overseas especially. Life is so different when you PCS. I just retired after 24 yrs and I miss it so much

I remember my first deployment. I had gotten lucky and when I arrived at my first unit we were deploying in a few months. So me, a brand new soldier didn't really have an idea of the real army or shall we say garrison life was like. I loved my deployment. The relationships I built with my leaders. I saw them more than just someone that out ranks me. I remember as we were transitioning out from Iraq to Kuwait getting all the debriefs. This SFC doing a brief essentially said any friendships forged with superiors should be cut now. Because when you get back to garrison that shit won't fly anymore. That really struck a nerve lol.
Shortly after returning my whole world kind of went upside down. Everything I did on deployment now in garrison was the wrong way of doing things. Its like you train to do shit the right way and then boom you're deployed and re-learn shit differently. I fucking hated garrison life. On deployment there was no room for piss-poor planning so people actually did their job. But in garrison that was not the case. I got tired of the BS, back stabbing, toxic leadership that came and gone. 5 years later and I was out. If I could rotate on deployments I would have stayed in. But garrison life was not for me.
Old retired Army NCO here - you are correct. Also, the service has a different feel depending upon where in the world you are stationed. The Army of training command differed from the Army CONUS, which differed from the Army in Europe, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan. I believe it should be the same with the AF in CONUS, USAFE, the Middle East etc.. Good perception.
Exactly why I'm so grateful Misawa AB, Japan, was my first duty station. Not a deployment, but it's a similar kind of community-focused environment overseas.

Very insightful - Navy recruiter said CT would be a good fit for me. Met with Air Force recruiter this morning; recruiter gave me the paperwork to fill out. Big toss up. I was measured today at recruiters' office; 6ft5.5 and 225 lbs. Nervous about the Navy rack, but it does not seem as bad as a tent. Big decision. I'm 26. 79 on the prelim asvab i took at Recruiter office.

I need to get my grades up and recover my credits leaving my old ways behind and change myself my habits my diets in order to join the Air Force along side my buddy John and Eduardo who’s already serving .... shout out to my all time best buddy Eduardo hes now in the Air Force working as a mechanic he’s been a mentor to me .. I first met him as a freshman and he was a senior taught me a lot in a couple months I am now a junior and haven’t seen him in 2 years but i love him dearly for what he did for me 💪🏻♥️

so how did it go?
I’m currently 17 and a senior in high school. my recruiter talked to me about going to take the asvab and go through meps before I graduate which is in May. I would like to possibly get deployed during the summer or as soon as possible after graduating. I would like to know when during the whole process you actually choose your job and how long it takes after bmt to get shipped. Also if you have any advice for me because it’s all I’ve been thinking about and it’s a couple months away. I just don’t wanna get anxious and fail Meps or do bad on my asvab.
I did 6 years and couldn't wait to get out...
I spent ten years in USAF security forces, did two deployments to Al Dhafra,UAE and one to Camp Bucca,Iraq. Camp Bucca was hard, rough and scary at times,but at least I feel like I accomplished something. The two deployments to Al Dhafra and experiencing the level of toxic leadership along with some of the other things that was going on there. Made me want to get out the military.
Despite experiencing toxic leadership, would you do it all over again?

Been to AL Dhafra also and I completely agree with you 100%. SF deployed leadership was terrible, at best. Always expected to get chewed out between 0800 and 1000 when my shift crossed over with back office. Miserable!

@@gabrielguzman6018 I sucked it up and tries to fo the best job I could as a Flt. Leader. Also carried a copy of the local regulation (SOP) with me that dictated how each incident should be dealt with and used it religiously. They can't chew your butt for doing thing by the book! The OPS NCIOC was a created position for a deployed, active duty MSgt who absolutely hated the Guard. He was the one who made life miserable for me, I assume, simply because was Guard. The deployes SF at the location was about 85% Guard. It wasn't just SF that operated that way. Other AFSC's from my base described a toxic environment in their shops too!
I enjoyed that very much. It was very informative and an eye opener. I'm preparing my health and mind to join the Air Force before the end of this year. Looking forward to the change very much needed.
I loved my Air Force career. My first deployment was in Bright Star 1987......Egypt for 30 days......spent the last week at the Hilton in downtown Cario......what an experience!! The guys I served with at MacDill just had our 35th Reunion. It was just like we served yesterday. BTW what's a Bucket?

Totally agree BUT this relates to pretty much ANY job even in the civilian life.
Ive played soccer with previous managers/business owners etc and its the same thing as well as other coworkers. Just because we work together doesn't make us buddy buddy.
I do however agree with learning everything you can from the people arround you. That is how you improve.

My husband is in the Navy and we have a 2 and 3 year old but I really want to join the Air Force as a photojournalist most likely. I’m not sure how realistic this would be for me though since my husband does plan to do his 20 years in the navy and I don’t know how likely it is that they can keep us stationed together in the same areas. Any one with experiences?

Lots of great advice here, particularly about interacting with others. There will be times when you work with, or observe, someone who you consider a good leader...the type of person who gets things done because they have to be but at the same time seems to earn (the key word is earn, it has to be earned and never demanded) the respect of those under their command. This person may be a grade higher than you, or several grades, that isn't necessarily important. What is important is to ask yourself why it is they achieve great results and how they earn respect, then bank those ideas for later, perhaps when you are in a similar position or more important trying to develop your own leadership style. It is equally important to remember those who have a dreadful leadership style, or are loathed by those under their command, and make sure not to repeat their errors...the sort of person who contributes to, or causes, the toxic relationship referred to here. This approach can be applied to pretty much every workplace, certainly not just a military one. Great leaders aren't necessarily born that way, they develop and improve with time and are willing to learn from others, but bad ones probably are.
Does anyone know if once you come back from over seas after a year or so an your back stateside is it harder to get deployed back over seas once your state side for a long period of time
It does not appear so unless you volunteer for it or perhaps are of a career field that has a high ops tempo

@RadBrad not necessarily. 1. He could have been deployed prior to that time frame you listed. 2. The first unit could have left right after he got in country.

Nah not at all. It's more of a reference to the enlisted vs officer population. There tend to be more enlisted than officers at most bases. There is no segregation of that nature

I’m focused on the Air Force right now. Taking the ASVAB July 22nd, plan to pass and go to MEPS soon after. I’m 22 years old ... any advice ?

I don't smoke I'm in good shape (162 lbs), I told my recruiter I had asthma (wish I didnt say anything) but I got released and cleared from asthma physicians so Im good on paperwork. just hope its not anymore hoops to jump through. thank you
Infinite Rumination congratulations I got a 96. Yeah the verification is rather easy most of the problem you will see, I think I only had a hand full of new problems. I was done in like 10 minuets, you might have to take the other test it gauges your adaptability.

David Smokes Do exactly what you’re told when you’re told to do it. You will need to work with your wingmen in order to succeed. Memorize your reporting statement and both enlisted and officer ranks before you leave. Learn facing movements as well. It’s super easy. After the first week you will think it’s a breeze, and it is. Keep your eye on the prize and good luck!
Have you ever seen a fruit get turned into a smoothie in a blinder? Well, BMT is kinda like that. You're the fruit and BMT is the blinder. Point is, go with the flow, don't fight it, do what your told, and do your damnedest to put up with the high school freaking bullshit that you are going to encounter until you finish. To easy.
