- Hobbyist and Beginner Woodworkers Can Make Fine Furniture!
In this video I will teach you how to make a Japanese inspired book shelf or shelving unit! It has protruding legs, dowel joinery, curved shelf ends and string inlay shelves cut with a jigsaw! This floor standing book shelf fits perfectly in a contemporary, modern home.
This beginner project is made from ash and walnut and you don't need a lot of tools to make it, it's a minimum tools project and I give you alternative tool options throughout the video if you don't have a particular one. This video is a very in-depth guide going through every step of the build so that you can make it yourself. You don't need years of experience this is a great starter project for any woodworker.

Thank you Dave! Appreciate that 🙏🏻
Really enjoyed this video, you explained everything very well and the finished item came out a treat!
What's your darts average, I'm normally mid sixties but in a good week low seventies.
Hey mate! Thank you so much, glad it was helpful and you didn't get tired of my voice ahah. Good question, I haven't actually worked out my average but it is probably 50 to 60. My highest throw ever was 140, which I was very proud of... I'm still praying for a 180 ahah
@@SeanEvelegh Once you get your first 180 the pressure's off and it's ever so slightly easier to get more!
Really lovely build, look forward to using some of those techniques. Like how accessible the build is too. Just wondering what planer thicknesser you use?
Hi Jon! Thanks a lot, yeah some really useful tips in the video! My favourite is the jigsaw inlay, hope that comes in handy for you! My planer thicknesses is the Axminster 300mm wide helical head one. Highly recommend it!
Thanks Sean, the machine did look very sturdy indeed, I'll look into that one for sure. The jigsaw inlay was fab, and its the first time I've seen that on youtube! I'll try and steal that one....I mean, borrow that one if you don't mind! Thanks again Sean, great video and tips
@@jonclark9815 Yeah the planer was a fantastic purchase! Glad you were inspired by the inlay, definitely give it a go! Let me know how you get on!
When you chamfered the shelves, I noticed you didn't chamfer where it meets the legs. Was that missing chamfer exactly to the leg width?
Hey Brent, I stopped the chamfers a bit sort of the leg, so not to overshoot and go to far… but you can measure and bring the changer right up to the leg mark. The reason I stopped the chamfers where the legs were, was to create as much glue surface as possible for jointing onto the leg. It created a much sturdier joint
